Mike Mahaney Wins “Battle of Plattsburgh,” Michael Wright Collects Second Win of the Season

Plattsburgh, NY-It was one of the most anticipated nights of the season as the DirtCar 358 Series invaded the Adirondacks Thursday for the “Battle of Plattsburgh” at the Airborne Park Speedway. The DirtCar Sportsman Series East Region was also in town, providing the crowd on hand with a star-studded card of dirt track action.

Mike Mahaney entered the evening on a three-race winning streak at “The Big A” and, despite a loaded field of challengers whom he wouldn’t have to deal with on a weekly night of racing at the track, still walked away with trophy and purse money in the 75-lap $ 5,000-to-win main event. Andrew Buff and Lance Willix led the field to the green flag, with Buff jumping to the lead. Mahaney fired from the third spot on the grid and quickly took the second spot from Willix. Caution flew for the first time on lap eight, and on the ensuing restart, Mahaney powered around Buff to claim the point. “Smooth Shoe” never gave it back. Felix Roy and Mat Williamson both slipped around Willix to move to the second and third positions, but neither “Hollywood” nor “Money Mat” could run Mahaney down. Following Mahaney, Roy, and Williamson across the stripe were Steve Bernier and Preston Forbes. It was the fourth consecutive win for Mahaney at Airborne Park, as he increased both his series track points leads.

In the DirtCar Sportsman Series East Region 30-lap feature, Michael Wright collected the hardware for his second win of the season at Airborne Park. It was the first series win for Wright. Wright and Travis Bruno began on the front row, and it was a two-car battle between the weekly Airborne regulars throughout. Wright sprang to the early lead, but Bruno overtook him on a lap 5 restart. Bruno and Wright exchanged the lead back and forth for the next few laps before Wright took charge for good. Wright led 26 laps of the event to cash the $1,500 winner’s check. Bruno held on for second, Joey Scarborough was third, Cory Castell fourth, and youngster Brodie Marks fifth.

The first feature of the evening was the 25-lap Renegade main event. Billy Thwaits established the early lead and fashioned a healthy advantage until the yellow lights illuminated on lap five, but the 18 car of multi-time winner Shawn Duquette was on the attack. Shawn Fountain and Tyler Irwin put on a show as they competed for the third and fourth spots, but it was well behind the top runners. Caution came back out on lap12, setting up a showdown between Thwaits and Duquette. Thwaits opened up a slight edge, but the race was again halted due to debris on the track with 10 circuits remaining. The top two runners in the division continued to duke it out over the final laps, but “Billy Bullet” had too much for the points leader, Duquette. Shawn Fountain outlasted Irwin for third, Irwin crossed the line fourth, and Josh Terry fifth.

In the RainPro of Vermont Limited Sportsman Modified feature, Gary English, the current points leader, navigated through the field from the 10th starting spot to capture his first win of the season. Adam LaFountain showed the way in the early stages, pulling away from Parker Dermody, who had advanced to the second position. By lap eight, English had charged to the second spot and set his sights on LaFountain. It appeared as though LaFountain may be on his way to his first win of the 2026 campaign, opening a sizable lead as English and Cody Gregoropoulos ran side by side behind. Bad luck struck LaFountain as his lead was erased when caution came out with six to go. English snatched the lead away from LaFountain on the restart and drove away for the trip to victory lane. Stephen Bushey, Gregoropoulos, Brogan Roberts, and LaFountain rounded out the top five.

The nightcap was the 20-lap feature for the Mini Stocks, with Joe Warren earning his first win of the season. Warren became the sixth winner in six races in the division. Haiden Bordeau controlled the first several laps, driving away by several car lengths as the field behind him swapped positions hot and heavy. The pack converged on Bordeau on lap six with Tyler Warren taking away the lead. Tyler Warren still led at the halfway point, but Joe Warren was knocking on the door, with Jeremiah King lurking. Caution flew eight laps from the end, setting up a shootout. Joe Warren took off on the restart with Jake Fountain close behind. Fountain pulled up beside Warren, heading to turn three on the final lap, but Warren powered his way off turn four to earn the victory, continuing the parity in the division. Fountain placed second, Tyler Warren third, King fourth, and Josh LaPorte fifth.

The action continues at Airborne Park Speedway on Thursday night, June 18th, with "Mid-Season Championships," "Topless for Dad," Hebert's Lawn Care & Snow Plowing - Drapeau Sanitation Night. There will be no heat races with extra laps for all divisions. Grandstand gates open at 5:30 p.m. Racing is at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission is $15. Kids 12 and under are free. Pit admission is $30 for members and $40 for non-members.
