Lussier takes fourth win, Poirier wins SCoNE thriller

Capacity crowd treated to packed show at Airborne Park

PLATTSBURGH, NY. -- What seemed like weeks of rain finally subsided long enough for Airborne Park Speedway to race on Saturday, August 10, despite an initially dismal forecast. The weather turned for the better throughout the week, and by 6PM on race day, the weather was nearly perfect, inviting a near-standing-room-only crowd to enjoy a great night of racing, headlined by the J&S Steel Sportsman and the McGee Automotive Family Sprint Cars of New England.

The race was presented by SeaComm Federal Credit Union and Liquor and Wine Warehouse, who, with the aid of several drivers, collected money for the make-a-wish foundation at intermission and gave away six bicycles to youngsters in attendance.

After an intermission period to re-groom the racing surface and provide the best possible racing entertainment, the J&S Steel Sportsman rolled out for a 35-lap, $1,500-to-win feature. Vince Quenneville, Jr. and Raphael Gougeon led the 30-car field to the green flag, with Gougeon taking the early lead in his first Airborne Park appearance. Joey Scarborough started 3rd and quickly made his way forward, bringing Travis Bruno with him towards the front. The first 27 laps were run under green flag conditions, with Gougeon lapping a number of cars on the outside lane of the ultra-fast racing surface. A misplaced infield tire drew the yellow on the 27th circuit, just as Scarborough began to close in on Gougeon in lapped traffic.

Two laps after the restart, Donovan Lussier slid up past Scarborough to take the 2nd position and track down Gougeon, which he did on lap 33. Lussier was better than Gougeon by a considerable margin in turns three and four, but Gougeon was slightly better in one and two. Lussier fired a slide-job at Gougeon in three and four, and Gougeon crossed him over on the front. Lussier went low to defend a return slider in one and two and drove away with the win. Gougeon was 2nd and Travis Bruno was 3rd.

Following the sportsman, the sprint cars made their only appearance at Airborne Park in 2024 a memorable one. Jason Goff and Tyler Chartrand had the front row by virtue of SCoNE's unique, handicapping format for feature lineups. Chartrand's 305 power plant was surprisingly up to the challenge against the 360s on the half-mile, and he led the first 12 circuits. It was lapped traffic that became a problem for Chartand, and on lap 13 Matt Tanner went around him for the lead from his 9th starting position. Seven laps later, Tanner appeared to try the middle lane in turns three and four with more traffic ahead of him on the bottom, but the timing was off and Jordan Poirier snuck through for the lead on the inside lane, not lapping the impending traffic until the next time around.

Tanner closed the gap and tried to get Poirier back but ran out of time. He followed Poirier across the line with Floyd Billington in 3rd. SCoNE points leader Matt Hoyt was 4th after starting way back in 13th. Chartrand held on for 5th.

Plantaginet, Ontario's Marc Lalonde won the 20-lap pro-stock feature, wiring the whole race over Denis Gauvreau. Behind them, the racing was quite the chess match, with Justin Chaput, Zack Daniels, Francois Adam and Bruno Cyr battling fiercely for top-five positions in the last five laps. They'd go on to finish in that order with Billy Thwaits, Marc Peladeau and Jonathan Lemay behind them.

Essex, Ny. driver Josh Terry made a thrilling, last lap pass to win the 9th State Cannabis Renegade feature. Richie Turner led several laps early before Nate Guay outlasted him on the bottom. Guay was followed closely by point leader Shawn Duquette, who appeared quicker than Guay, but did not have the car to attempt an outside pass, waiting for Guay to slip off the bottom and applying pressure in the corners. While they ran the bottom, Josh Terry was able to build momentum in the middle, setting himself up to go around them both. He pulled up alongside Duquette with two laps remaining, then drove around Nate Guay on the final circuit to win in thrilling fashion, but was disqualified following post-race technical inspection, handing the win back to Guay. Duquette was 2nd, Turner was 3rd, Tylor Terry was 4th and Billy Thwaits was 5th.

The Moore Recycling Mini Stock turned in another spectacular race, with Kris Clark winning his 3rd straight. He showed the nose to leader Ryan Senecal with a few laps remaining, prompting Senecal to move up high and force Clark to run the bottom. Though he has been fast on the extreme outside in recent weeks, Clark proved to be equally good down low, skating by Senecal on the final lap to score the hat-trick. Senecal was good for 2nd with Josh LAPorte, Sr. completing the podium. Matt Parker and Kenny Tourville were 4th and 5th, respectively. Caleb Tourville won the B-feature over Greg Zindler, after they both had trouble in their qualifiers. Joe Warren was 3rd.

Bridport, V.T.'s Gage Provencher won the first 500cc Mini-Sprint exhibition feature at Airborne Park just before intermission, after a great side-by-side battle with Orford, N.H.'s Chris Pierce, who finished 2nd. Ashleigh Kulzer was 3rd.

The Chris Frennier Motorsports Enduro was as wild and crazy as promised, with 29 entries going 50 laps. Eric Messier, from Hinesburg, V.T., who is a sort of front-wheel-drive racing ace, picked up the win, leading the majority of the race after Richie Turner was forced pit-side for a brief time. Michael Wright was 2nd with Devil's Bowl Enduro star Andrew Lopes in 3rd. JP Corrow was 4th and Turner returned to run 5th.

Airborne Park Speedway returns with twice the action on Thursday, August 15. All divisions will have double features (no heats). Mini stock format for the night will depend on car count. Intermission will feature the second round of kids' racecar rides for 2024. General Admission is just $15 with kids 12 and under free. Pit passes are $28 for members and $38 for non-members. Wristbands from the rain out on August 1st will be honored for the pits and the grandstands. Pit gates open at 4PM, grandstand gates open at 5:30. Racing is set to begin at 7PM.

Driver Raphaël Lessard “joins” the Lions de Trois-Rivières!

Driver Raphaël Lessard "joins" the Lions de Trois-Rivières!

Trois-Rivières, August 7 2024 – Twenty-three-year-old driver Raphaël Lessard will be donning the Lions de Trois-Rivières' colours… but not on the ice! Rather, he'll be driving at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières (GP3R) taking place this weekend (August 9 to 11). He'll be piloting car No. 7 during the NASCAR Pinty's Series main event; Lessard's car will sport the Lions' colours and logo during Sunday's race.

The Spire connection!

When he assumed ownership of the Lions de Trois-Rivières, Jeff Dickerson said he wanted to become involved in the local Trois-Rivières community and strengthen his ties with GP3R: This announcement is proof positive of that ambition.

"We are extremely proud having Raphaël Lessard drive the No. 7 car sporting the Lions de Trois-Rivières' colours in the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières. This collaboration between Spire Motorsports and the Lions de Trois-Rivières symbolizes our combined commitment to support local talent and to strengthen our presence in the community. We have total confidence in Raphaël and are certain he will be a wonderful ambassador for our two organizations on the track." – Jeff Dickerson Lions' owner and Spire Motorsports' co-owner.

"We knew that with Spire Sports assuming ownership of the Lions, it would result in the team becoming a greater part of the fabric of the Trois-Rivières community. The partnership between our event, the Lions and Raphaël Lessard – who is the only Quebecer to have won a national NASCAR series race – is a case in point. The Lions are not only enabling us to watch Raphaël perform on the track, but he'll be doing so in a car that is capable of taking the chequered flag!" - Dominic Fugère, GP3R's general manager.

"We are very proud to support Raphaël Lessard – an exceptional Quebec talent – at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières. Getting to see our logo and colours in an event of this magnitude reinforces our commitment to the community and our desire to promote local talent. We wish Raphaël all the success in the world and look forward to seeing him perform on the track." - Alex Cousineau Lions' Vice-President, Business Development and Assistant General Manager.

A promising young driver

Still only in his early 20s, Lessard already has an impressive curriculum vitae: He was the first Quebecer to win a Nascar National Series event, winning the Love's RV 250 Stop at the legendary Talladega Superspeedway in 2020.

Lessard will be making his fourth appearance on the GP3R track in the NASCAR Pinty's series. He's raced in a total of eight NASCAR Canada Pinty's series events, and 35 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

Lessard participated in the NASCAR Canada race – as well as the Chevrolet Urban Challenge race – during last year's GP3R. Although mechanical failure prevented him from completing the NASCAR race, the Urban Challenge was an entirely different matter as he brought home the chequered flag. Lessard will be out to defend his title this year.

Peterborough Speedway Brings the Short Track Fun to Central Ontario

Peterborough Speedway Brings the Short Track Fun to Central Ontario
By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

Central Ontario motorsports fans were treated to a full night of short track fun – Saturday, August 10th – at Peterborough Speedway.
The night's opening order of business was the completion of a 25-lap Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series feature that was red-flagged July 6th with only a single scored lap because of the track curfew. Paul Pierik and Matt Haufe brought the field from the staging area to resume the main event. Haufe took the early lead from his outside front row starting spot, bringing Cole McFadden and Pierik along with him as Adam Cuthbertson slipped into 4th. The potent No. 7 of Haufe had an advantage of close to 5 car lengths with just over a handful of laps on the scoreboard. There was excellent racing throughout the field before the race's only yellow flag waved with only 5 laps remaining. Haufe hung-on for the win, with McFadden, Cuthbertson, Dawson Drimmie and Mitch Wright completing the top 5.
A 12-lap demonstration event for the Ontario Bandoleros saw Luke Cuthbertson and Lyla Sikma on the front row. Sikma took the early race lead, with Eva Boundy moving into 2nd. As the field started to move through slower traffic, Lucas took the race lead and held on for the victory. Sikma, Boundy, Landon Sellers and Peyton Milburn rounded-out the top 5.
Kingsway Auto Centre Junior Late Model teams rolled from the staging area for 10 lap main event that saw Austin Finnegan take the lead from the initial green flag. Near the midway mark, the driver of the No. 26 ride had an advantage of about half the track and had started working through the backmarkers. Without a yellow flag to slow the pace, he scored the win over Carter Cappuccitti, Wyatt Beatty, Knox Richardson and Robbie Miltimore.
Front row starters Andrew Massey and Rick Warnes brought the OMRS Modified teams to the stripe, with Massey taking the early race lead. The driver of the No. 83 held a strong advantage before being parked for a mechanical issue that was deemed to be a fuel leak. Rick Warnes held-off a late-race charge from crowd favourite John Baker Jr. and scored his 2nd main event win the group's last 3 races. Tyler Bouillon, Bob Franks and Robert Warnes chased the lead duo across the line.
Kingsway Auto Centre Pro Junior Late Model teams came to the Great Canadian RV green flag with Chase Cousineau and Landon Sellers on the front row. Cousineau's No. 08 machine was fast but had Hudson Sellers turning in a strong run behind him. A multi-car incident on the front stretch produced a red flag with 7 laps on the scoreboard eliminated several cars, but there were no injuries to the drivers. A late race yellow flag slowed the pace but didn't delay the outcome, as Chase Cousineau claimed the win. Landon and Hudson Sellers were 2nd and 3rd, with Brayden Cappuccitti and Carson Cousineau completing the top 5.
With 20 laps to settle the score, the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck feature came to the line with the field on the grid in the missing racer formation to honour the memory of former racer Bill O'Hara, who had passed away a week earlier. Chad Strawn and Mark Gordon ran most of the race's early laps nose-to-tail, before Strawn's No. 35 machine broke away. There was 10 truck length margin as the race leader came to the checkered flag. Gordon, Howie Crowe, Jack Dallin and Shawn Murray followed Strawn across the line.
The regularly scheduled Ontario Legend Car Series feature had Jordan Latimer and Mitch Wright on the front row for the group's National Qualifier. Latimer took the early lead and held through a stretch where 6 different racers were battling for the top spot. A yellow flag just short of the halfway mark slowed things down, with Wright taking the lead on the restart and previous Peterborough Speedway race winner fighting for 2nd with Latimer. The No. 21, 66 and 90 trio held onto the top 3 positions at the checkered flag, as Wright, Drimmie and Latimer crossed the stripe under a virtual blanket. Matt Haufe and Adam Cuthbertson.
Following a tribute to fallen local racer Joe Craven, Mark Downer and Chris Tubman brought the SwitchTire Mini Stock pack from the staging area for the night's 50-lap finale. Tubman – who came into the show leading the point standings – was the early race leader. The No. 88 machine logged some fast laps at the front of the field, while Charlie Smith – who picked-up the checkered flag in this year's season opener – was marching toward the front. His No. 95 car was the race leader with 7 laps complete and started to work through slower traffic a lap later. By the time the race was halted for Neil Bennett's hard wreck with the 3rd turn wall, Smith's performance had left only 4 cars on the lead lap. The green-white-checkered flag restart with only 2 laps remaining saw Smith take the win and claim a $500 payday from Lakeside Mobile Tire. Karl Sault, Tubman, Mark Downer and Dave Watchorn completed the top 5.

All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post race inspection.
