Stone and Roy take modified doubles, Bresette comes up big for $500 Roberts earns first win at Airborne Park

PLATTSBURGH, Ny. – Justin Stone and Felix Roy won twin 25-lap features for the Be Cool Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration 358 Modifieds Thursday, August 15 at Airborne Park, while Fire Swamp and Even Roberts split the J&S Steel Sportsman double features. Tylor Terry won both 9th State Cannabis Renegade contests while Steven Bresette captured the $500-to-win Moore Recycling Mini Stock Special.

The night began with heats for the mini stocks, setting their lineup for their biggest race of the year. A series of accidents and mechanical issues sent a number of cars to the B-feature, from which only the winner would transfer to the A. Once qualifying was complete for the mini stocks, the first 358 modified feature rolled out with Greg Atkins and Tanner Siemons on the front row.

Atkins led the opening lap but was quickly passed by Jordan Fornwalt, who began to build a healthy advantage over the field. Mike Mahaney and Justin Stone were both on the move early, rim-riding the extreme outside lanes of the racetrack, eventually settling in line for the green-to-checkers run. Around halfway, Stone caught Fornwalt and they began to battle through lapped traffic with Fornwalt holding strong on the top, until five laps to go with Stone passed him on the inside of turns one and two with Felix Roy and Steve Bernier closing in. Stone led the final five laps to score his second win of 2024. Fornwalt was 2nd, a career best run for him. Bernier ended up 3rd with Roy 4th and Chris Raabe completing the top-five.

In the second feature for the 358 modifieds, Roy and Bernier led the field to green. Bernier led the opening lap, using the outside to power around Roy while Raabe was on the move further back with  Mahaney. On lap 13, the yellow came out for a pair of misplaced infield tires. Bernier chose the bottom on the restart and Roy floated around his outside, not looking back. He claimed his second win of the year. Mahaney was 2nd with Stone 3rd. Bernier was 4th and Tim Fuller finished 5th.

The J&S Steel Sportsman also had double features on the night, along with the 9th State Cannabis Renegades. Mike Wells and Rick Frenyea had the front row for the first feature with Wells jumping out front and looking very fast. As the race went on, 5th starter Jonathan Toohill got rolling on the outside lane, scooting around Wells on lap 13. Fire Swamp followed him by Wells and the duo pulled away, with Swamp firing a slide-job at Toohill on lap 18 in turn three. Toohill crossed him over and re-took the top spot. In the next corner, Toohill drove off the top of the second turn, handing the lead back to Swamp. AS Swamp ran the top, Chris Cayea rolled the bottom and reeled Swamp in, coming up just short of a victory on the final lap, finishing 2nd. Frenyea was 3rd with Codie Aubin 4th and Wells 5th.

Later in the night, Charlotte Morin and Jamy Begor led the sportsman back to green in their second feature with Begor leading early from the top. Evan Roberts was quickly up to 2nd, tracking Begor down and passing him, surviving a number of restarts to score the win. Tanner Forbes charged to 2nd late with Vince Quenneville, Jr., in 3rd. Begor and Joey Scarborough finished 4th and 5th, respectively.

Tylor Terry won both 9th State Cannabis Renegade Features, charging from the sixth row both times to score his fifth and sixth wins of 2024. Terry went to challenge Richie Turner for the lead with only a few laps remaining when Turner appeared to suffer an engine failure down the backstretch. Terry led from there, but was followed closely in the first feature by points leader Shawn Duquette with Tyler Irwin enjoying a great 3rd-place run. Billy Thwaits was 4th and Nate Guay was 5th. Terry's win in the second feature was more convincing, dominating the race on the outside lane after taking the lead on lap 12. Guay was 2nd with Thwaits 3rd, Duquette 4th and Josh Terry 5th.

The Moore Recycling Mini Stocks brought 38 cars to do battle for $500 on Saturday, a race initially scheduled for August 1, which was rained out. Twenty-four cars transferred to the main event through heat races, and the winner of the B-feature would start 25th. Matt Parker won the B-main solidly, but came up light on the scales, handing the win to Speedy Bresette, who had trouble in his heat race. While Jason Bradley and Tyler Bell led the A-Main to its start, Bresette started 24th (one car did not start, moving the B-main winner up one position). Bradley led early, looking like a contender for the money, but Steven Bresette and three-time winner Kris Clark were moving through the pack after a series of cautions in the first few laps. Bresette passed Bradley on lap 11 for the lead and Clark followed him, driving hard into the corners to reel him in. Ultimately, Bresette's smooth driving in the middle groove proved better than Clark's inside lane, and Bresette collected the win. Clark and Bradley completed the podium with Jake Fountain and Ryan Seencal 4th and 5th.

Airborne Park Speedway returns this Thursday, August 22 at 7PM with more "Thursday Night Thunder" powered by New England Ford Dealers. The J&S Steel Sportsman will run a 50-lap, $1500-to-win Vermont 200 qualifier. They'll be joined on the card by another pro stock race, plus the renegades, mini stocks and limited sportsman. General admission is $15, kids 12 and under are FREE! Pit passes are $28 for members and $38 for non-members. Pit gates will open at 4PM with the stands opening at 5:30. Racing starts at 7PM!
