Autism Awareness Night Returns June 22nd at Peterborough Speedway

Autism Awareness Night Returns June 22nd at Peterborough Speedway
By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media
By its nature, the sport of short track stock car racing can be described as a rough and tumble – and sometimes, even aggressive – spectator attraction. Saturday, June 22nd fans at Peterborough Speedway will get to see the softer side of Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile Oval as the track plays host to an Autism Awareness Night. President of CNAF – the Canadian National Autism Foundation – Tina Fougere says its all about having family fun for a great cause.
"Kid's Race is about accepting our loved ones with Autism," Fougere said. "We couldn't ask for a better place in Central Ontario to host our special event. The wonderful people at Peterborough Speedway have opened their doors and more importantly, their hearts to our cause."
Kid's Race was started in 2010 as an idea to create a new platform for Autism research and awareness. It wasn't too long after speaking with – and working alongside track owners, officials, drivers, crews and fans – that a common bond was formed. Everyone associated with the event quickly realized that passion, dedication, family and a love for what they do is something that everyone shared. Peterborough Speedway owner/promoter J.P. Josiasse says that Autism Awareness Night – Saturday, June 22nd – is an informative and educational event for everyone who comes through the gates.
"Our drivers, teams, crew members, sponsors and fans are quick to throw their support behind a worthwhile cause," Josiasse said. "Even if a member of your family hasn't been affected by autism, you probably know someone who has. Whatever you can do to help the Canadian National Autism Foundation is a win-win for everyone involved,"

On track action for Saturday, June 22nd at Peterborough Speedway will feature the home track SwitchTire Mini Stock, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck, Jiffy Lube Super Stock KOD Disposal Late Model and Kingsway Auto Centre Junior Late Model divisions, plus the Can Am TQ Midgets. Pit gates will open at 2:30, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and racing at 6:00.

Jacob Mercer Continues his Racing Education with an APC Late Model Start

Jacob Mercer Continues his Racing Education with an APC Late Model Start
By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media
Logging laps at the hometown speedway could hardly be confused with a traditional classroom environment, but that doesn't mean Jacob Mercer isn't learning something every time he gets behind the wheel of his No. 81 Late Model racecar at Peterborough Speedway.
Saturday, June 15th, the 18-year-old 3rd generation racer from Port Hope, Ontario went to school with the best of the best as the travelling teams from the APC Series rolled into the popular oval on Mount Pleasant Road. After showing some strength during the pre-race practice sessions, Jacob Mercer, his team and the crew were optimistic and how their day would progress.
"We were very good in practice and recorded the 9th fastest speed, with some competitive lap times," said team owner and the driver's father Bryan Mercer. "Our tires staggered perfectly and we were looking forward to a good run. The American Racers are a softer compound and wear faster than the Hoosiers."
In a field of full-time series runners and drivers with much more experience at other tracks and on the tour, the No. 81 machine qualified 16th and finished the 100-lap main event 15th, 1-lap down to the leader. While they were hoping for a better outing, Bryan Mercer says that around the 30-lap mark, the car became 'evil loose' and a handful behind the wheel.
Jacob Mercer and the No. 81 Mercer Motorsports team thanks Sine's Flooring, Durmach Precision Tooling, Facility Services, Courtice Septic, Beyond Signs & Design, Lindsay Dodge Chrysler, CARSTAR Lindsay, Lindsay Buick GMC, Highland Designs by Tracy Pattison, Cressman Tree Maintenance, Richter Law, BJ Tackle, Kawartha Metals, K9INE Protection, YoungCo Septic Design & Install, Cliffshore Excavating, Sarah Turck Sherwood Mortgage Group, Andrea Spohn Desjardins Insurance, Ganaraska Financial, Holdaway Motorsports and Clarke Motorsports Communications for their support during the 2024 schedule.
Next on the line-up for the team will be the annual Autism Awareness Night – in support of the CNAF – Saturday, June 22nd at Peterborough Speedway.
Family, fans and friends can find and follow Jacob Mercer throughout the season on the 81 Mercer Motorsports' Facebook page.

Ideal Weather Greets Late Model & Super Stock Tours at Peterborough Speedway

Ideal Weather Greets Late Model & Super Stock Tours at Peterborough Speedway
By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media
Forecasters called for a day with wall-to-wall sunshine as Peterborough Speedway welcomed its biggest event of the 2024 regular season – Saturday, June 15th – with the return of the APC Late Model and Dayco Super Stock tours.
The venue that is Making Memories for Life kicked-off the Father's Day weekend event with a 50-lap headliner for the Dayco Super Stock Series that saw former track champion Anthony DiBello and defending race winner Carson Nagy lead the field to the Great Canadian RV green flag. DiBello took the advantage, but the pace was slowed for an early race debris caution with a pair of laps complete. There was a tight, 3-way battle for the lead on the restart, as Nagy claimed the top spot, with Lane Zardo and Shawn Chenoweth completing the top-3. Despite some intense battles deep in the pack, Nagy wasn't challenged the rest of the way and scored the win over Chenoweth, Zardo, DiBello and defending Peterborough Speedway Super Stock track champion Miles Tyson. Marlie Owen was the top finishing home track regular, bringing her No. 21 machine across the line 8th at the checkered flag. Brad Lavalle – who made a last-minute decision to enter the event – finished 15th.
The night's 20-lap Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock 'A' main - with Kyle Novis, wheeling the popular No. 21 Mini Cooper and Samuel Arnott showing the way – was next to the line. John Bates looked to use some muscle to take the top spot from the front row starters, but wound-up in a 3-way fight for the lead with Novis and Mark Griffin. Novis took the advantage just before the halfway point, while the rest of the field was fighting for positions in his rear-view mirror. Shortly after a late race yellow flag, Sean Kennedy moved into 3rd behind Novis and Bates, but his charge to the front had run out of time. Novis, Bates, Kennedy, Tegan Stanley and Griffin would make-up the top-5 at the checkered flag. Mark Griffin's No. 58 was disqualified in post-race inspection, moving Victoria McLenon into 5th spot in the final rundown.
With the starting grid depleted by a heat race crash, triggered by a blown engine, a 15-lap Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck feature event that had Scott Jacobs and Shawn Murray on the front row rolled from the staging area. Murray held the lead early, with Mark Gordon working the outside line and taking the top spot just past the halfway mark. He held-off a challenge from his son Kyle to earn a trip to Dart Heating & Air Conditioning Victory Lane. Murray, Kurt Batty and Scott Jacobs completed the top-5.
Jake Sheridan and Connor Pritiko led the way as the KOD Disposal 100 came to the stripe. Sheridan took an early lead, with defending Peterborough Speedway track champion Ryan Kimball moving into the runner-up spot. The race pace was slowed for an incident in the 2nd turn, with 13 laps on the scoreboard. Shortly after the restart, Dan McHattie – who had started 8th – took over 2nd position and took control of the main event with 3rd turn pass for the lead with 30 laps complete. The pack started to put backmarkers a lap down with 34 circuits on the board, before another caution flag brought the field back together about 3 laps later. At the halfway point, McHattie held an advantage of 6 car lengths over Sheridan, with Shae Gemmell, Jo Lawrence and Blair Wickett rounding-out the top 5. Dan McHattie's next obstacle was some heavy race traffic at lap 71, but he survived a late-race yellow flag to log a dominating race win. Wickett, Sheridan, Lawrence and Pritiko would follow the hometown favourite across the stripe.
Kyle Gordon – wheeling the No. 62 in place of Howie Crowe – and his father Mark Gordon shared the Renegade Truck qualifying events. Tegan Stanley steered 'Rhonda the Honda' to a couple of Bone Stock heat race wins, with the others going to Sean Kennedy and John Bates.
All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post race inspection.
Bullring bullet points: With his main event win, Dan McHattie also collected a $2500 Hometown Hero bonus, put in place by Jeff Drimmie and event sponsor KOD Disposal.
Next on the 2024 schedule at Peterborough Speedway is the annual Autism Awareness Night – in support of the Canadian National Autism Foundation – Saturday, June 22nd. Action includes the home track Mini Stock, Renegade Truck, Super Stock, Late Model and Junior Late Model divisions, plus the TQ Midgets. Grandstands open at 5:00, with the first Great Canadian RV green flag at 6:00.

Scarborough wins sportsman, Terry rebounds in renegades

PLATTSBURGH, NY. -- Joey Scarborough won Saturday's 30-lap J&S Steel Sportsman Feature over Nick Heywood and Travis Bruno. The first busy Saturday night of the 2024 schedule produced 11 winners on the night, with Pro Stocks, Mod Lites, and Vintage cars all being added to the card.

The Sportsman drew for their heat race starting positions and lined up the feature via random invert. Bucko Branham and Evan Roberts led the field to green, and Branham took the early lead. Roberts ran the top and built up enough momentum to pass Branham for the top spot on lap five. Nick Heywood was moving forward early, getting to 3rd position while Travis Bruno, Jamy Begor, Fire Swamp, Dave Camara and more all battled for spots behind them.

Heywood got by Roberts on lap eight and led convincingly, until around the halfway point when lapped traffic began to factor in and Scarborough reeled him in.

A lap 19 caution bunched up the field and Scarborough went around Heywood's outside, taking the lead. He survived one more restart and went on to win by just under one second.

Heywood was 2nd with Bruno 3rd. Swamp was 4th, Roberts held on for 5th. Dave Camara was 6th, followed by Begor, Vince Quenneville, Jr., Donovan Lussier and Tanner Forbes.

Travis Stokes and Mark Caron led the 9th State Cannabis Renegades to green for their 20-lap Feature with Caron taking the early lead. Josh Terry made his way forward from his 7th starting position, taking the lead from Caron on lap six.

Meanwhile, at the back, heavy hitters Tylor Terry, Nate Guay and Shawn Duquette were trying to make their way to the front, as well as a handful of drivers from the Canadian Semi Pro Street Stock series, who were racing with the Renegades.

Tylor Terry found his way to 3rd spot around lap 16, and then the caution flag flew, bunching the field back up. They completed one lap before another yellow flag period, followed by another restart, where Josh Terry held off Zack Daniels, Tylor Terry and Shawn Duquette to win his 2nd Feature of 2024. Martin Thiebert came up through the pack, crossing the line 3rd, finishing as the highest semi pro street stock, earning top honors there.

Burton Ward won a wild Pro Stock Feature, besting Marc Lolonde and Bastien Caron. Zack Daniels led much of the event's second half after passing Caron, but a lap 24 caution led to a pair of green-white-checkered restarts, and on the second go, Ward passed Daniels on the bottom, and held off a fray of drivers on the final circuit to win. Lalonde was 2nd with Caron 3rd. Daniels ended up 4th and Kyle Hoard finished 5th.

Justin Williams won the ModLite feature over Pierre Olivier-Trudel and Alex Forcier. Williams came from the back of his heat race to win convincingly, and had the field covered for the feature, navigating lapped traffic and a late restart to secure the win.

Brett Manor won the Moore Recycling Mini Stock A Main. The race began in chaos as front-running drivers Tyler Bell and Cale Manor made contact, immediately bringing out a caution. Neither driver returned. That gave Brett Manor and JP Corrow the front row with Manor scooting away from the field. Caleb and Kenny Tourville found their way to the front by the end, but Brett Manor bested the younger Tourville off turn four's outside for the last three laps to secure the win. Kenny Tourville was 3rd with Nate Smart in 4th and Speedy Bresette coming on at the ed to finish 5th.

The B-feature was won by Steven Bresette who did not finish his heat race as a result of a tumble off turn two. Jon Brown was 2nd. Nick Harnden was 3rd. Kyle Botala debuted a new Mazda with a 4th place run.

The Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds were in town, bringing with them 12 cars for Heats and a Feature. Jack Miller won the Modified class over Dan Karl. Merv Blackwell triumphed in the Sportsman vintage ranks, with Joe Rando and Don Birggs (Mystique and Antique) also visiting victory lane.

Airborne Park Speedway returns to racing Thursday, June 20 at 7PM with all regular divisions, including the Be Cool Heating and Air Conditioning 350 Modifieds. There will be kids' racecar rides at intermission. General admission tickets are $15. Pit entry is $28 for members and $38 for non-members.
