Reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Earns Additional Hardware at Awards Show

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 14, 2016) – The 24th annual ESPY Awards got a little "rowdy" as reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Kyle Busch was named Best Driver at last night's ceremony. He received the most votes among fellow nominees 2015 IndyCar Series Champion Scott Dixon, 2015 Formula One World Driver's Champion Lewis Hamilton, 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi, and 2015 NHRA Pro Stock Champion Erica Enders-Stevens.

 

NASCAR drivers have been victorious in the Best Driver category eight of the last ten years, with Busch joining fellow competitors Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson on the elite list of winners. 

 

The world of sports witnessed an incredible comeback last season by Busch, who suffered a compound fracture in his right leg and a broken left foot at the season-opening NASCAR XFINITY Series race in Daytona. After missing 11 races due to his injuries, Busch returned to win four out of five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events over the course of the summer, effectively clinching his spot in the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

 

His superior performance continued throughout the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, including three top-five finishes in the Round of 8 that ultimately led him to the championship. Busch went on to capture the checkered flag in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, taking home his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series title and solidifying his position as one of the greatest comeback stories in sports.

 

Busch is a formidable contender in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series again this season with the most top five finishes of any driver and three wins thus far.

Sixth Annual Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award Presented by Nationwide

Award to be Presented at Inaugural Honors Gala Sept. 27 in New York City

 

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. (July 14, 2016) – Finalists for The NASCAR Foundation's Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award Presented by Nationwide were announced on Wednesday night on NASCAR America on NBCSN. The award will be showcased on Sept. 27 at the Foundation's inaugural Honors Gala at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.

 

The award honors volunteers – who are also NASCAR fans – who dedicate themselves to children's causes in their communities throughout the United States. The award winner will be determined via an online vote now underway and running through Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. (ET) at NASCAR.com/Award.

 

This year's Award presentation will be part of the "10 Years of Giving" celebration for The NASCAR Foundation, which has donated $25 million to more than one million children since its inception in 2006. Betty Jane France, founder and chairwoman emeritus of The NASCAR Foundation, will present the award. The NASCAR Foundation will donate a total of $175,000 to the charities represented by the finalists – with the winner's charity receiving a $100,000 donation.

 

This year's finalists include Jim Giaccone of Bayville, New York, representing Tuesday's Children; Andy Hoffman of Atkinson, Nebraska, founder of the Team Jack Foundation; Logan Houptley of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a founding member of Mikayla's Voice; and Parker White of Greensboro, North Carolina, founder of BackPack Beginnings.

 

"The body of work by this year's four finalists reflects an impressive level of commitment to improving the lives of children," said France. "Their accomplishments likewise reflect The NASCAR Foundation's fundamental ideals and what the Foundation strives to achieve on a daily basis. All four finalists are wonderful representatives of our award process and of the NASCAR community."

 

Following is additional information about the 2016 finalists:

 

Jim Giaccone, Tuesday's Children: Giaccone lost his older brother, Joseph, in the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.  Giaccone determined quickly that the best way to honor his brother was by assisting others – especially children – who also were affected by the tragedy. That led to Giaccone's involvement with Tuesday's Children, an organization founded in 2001 and dedicated to providing long-term support to those directly impacted by the events of 9/11 and other communities impacted by terrorism and traumatic loss. Jim is involved with many aspects of Tuesday's Children including raising funds, serving on the Mentoring Advisory Board, serving on the Family Advisory Board and his most significant contribution: serving as a mentor.

 

Andy Hoffman, Team Jack Foundation: In 2011, Hoffman's world was turned upside down when his son, Jack, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Hoffman soon learned that procedures to treat pediatric brain cancer – surgery and chemotherapy – were more than 30 years old. He also learned that less than four percent of federal funding is dedicated to childhood cancer research each year. One year after the diagnosis, Hoffman made t-shirts as a fundraiser for children's brain cancer research; through his efforts he was able to sell 20,000 shirts and raise more than $300,000. Inspired by that success, Hoffman and his wife formed Team Jack Foundation in January 2013. The foundation raises money to fund pediatric brain cancer research and works to create national awareness for the disease.

 

Logan Houptley, Mikayla's Voice: Houptley met a young lady named Mikayla Resh in his third-grade classroom after moving to a new school district in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Mikayla had profound multiple disabilities that included brain damage, cerebral palsy, seizure disorder, along with facing the challenges of being blind and deaf.  At only 10 years old, Logan was incredibly understanding and accepting, treating Mikayla with love, kindness, and inclusion. Ten years after they met, Logan has continued his friendship with Mikayla, in the process helping create Mikayla's Voice. Founded in 2010, the organization is dedicated to inspiring children and young adults to embrace individuals of all abilities. The organization promotes cultural change by teaching communities about the importance of inclusion and acceptance. 

 

Parker White, BackPack Beginnings: White founded BackPack Beginnings in 2010, driven by a compassion for families struggling to provide for their children on a daily basis. With two young children of her own, Parker understood a mother's desire to see her child be happy and successful.  But she also knew that not every family has the means to put enough food on the table or provide basic necessities for their children. That led White to establish BackPack Beginnings, which strives to provide children in the Greensboro and High Point, North Carolina areas with nutritious food, clothing, and other basic necessities. BackPack Beginnings works with local schools to open food and clothing pantries, donate backpacks filled with blankets and school supplies, and provide comfort and hygiene items to children in need.

Picks Up First NASCAR K&N Pro East Win Since 2012

 

LOUDON, N.H. (July 16, 2016) -- Corey LaJoie returned to Victory Lane in dominating style Saturday night.

 

LaJoie led the final 34 laps and drove away from the field on a green-white-checkered finish to win the United Site Services 70 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It was LaJoie's first win since 2012 when he had five victories en route to a runner-up finish in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.

 

The victory came twenty years to the week that his father, two-time NASCAR XFINITY Series champion Randy LaJoie, won at New Hampshire. A then four-year-old Corey was in Victory Lane with his dad that day.

 

This time, Corey LaJoie was the elder statesman, as the 24-year-old NASCAR Next alum held off runner-up Todd Gilliland, 16, and 17-year-old third-place finisher Justin Haley.

 

Kyle Benjamin and Austin Theriault finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

 

LaJoie was making his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series East start of the season, driving the No. 41 CarQuest Auto Part Chevrolet for Ranier Racing with MDM. He started second alongside teammate Benjamin and took the lead from him on Lap 39.

 

It was sweep redemption for LaJoie, who suffered a mechanical failure while running in the top 10 earlier in the day in the NASCAR XFINITY Series race. LaJoie also twice came close to winning the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at New Hampshire. He was runner-up to Kyle Larson in 2012, and wrecked late in the running of the 2010 race while battling for the lead.

 

Hunter Baize was sixth Saturday night, followed by Harrison Burton, Trey Hutchens, Ryan Preece and Tyler Dippel.

 

With his finish, Haley was able to keep his lead to 40 points over Benjamin with five races remaining.

 

The United Site Services 70 will air on NBCSN on Thursday, July 21 at 11 p.m.

 

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series will next run at Iowa Speedway in the annual combination showdown with the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West in the Casey's General Store 150 presented by Vatterott College on Friday, July 28.

Victoire de Tagliani lors de la cinquième étape NASCAR disputée à Toronto

Alex Tagliani résiste à Andrew Ranger dans les derniers tours à Toronto pour remporter la victoire en NASCAR Pinty's


Montréal, 16 juillet 2016 - À son premier départ dans la division canadienne de NASCAR sur le circuit urbain de Toronto, Alex Tagliani a inscrit son quatrième triomphe en série, son deuxième en 2016. Qualifié au deuxième rang, le pilote québécois a finalement pris les commandes de la course au 25e tour en doublant la recrue Daniel Morad de Toronto. Au cours des 12 tours suivants de cette cinquième étape de la série NASCAR Pinty's, Tagliani a résisté aux attaques d'Andrew Ranger, vainqueur des épreuves NASCAR à Toronto en 2010 et 2011. Une neutralisation au 31e passage a regroupé le peloton de 26 voitures, et Ranger a dû attendre le déploiement du drapeau vert au 35e tour avant d'attaquer. Malgré l'immense pression venant du pilote de Roxton Pond, Tagliani a maintenu le cap jusqu'au fil d'arrivée.


La recrue Kevin Lacroix de Saint-Eustache a complété un podium tout québécois à Toronto. Le Trifluvien Louis-Philippe Dumoulin a terminé quatrième et l'Ontarien Kerry Micks complète le top-5. En quatre départs cette saison, Tagliani a récolté deux victoires et terminé une autre fois sur le podium.


« Nous avons connu une semaine mouvementée et fort occupée à Toronto avec la promotion EpiPen, et pour couronner le tout, la victoire en NASCAR Pinty's, a déclaré Tagliani qui avait tout de même une certaine expérience sur le circuit urbain de la ville-reine du temps de la série Champ Car. Au début de la course, la voiture avait une certaine carence au niveau de l'adhérence arrière en entrant dans les virages, mais les freins fonctionnaient à merveille. À la mi-course, j'ai commencé à pousser pour reprendre quelques positions. À la poursuite d'Andrew (Ranger) et Daniel (Morad), je me suis aperçu que ma Chevrolet EpiPen/ Riobel/ CanTorque/ Complexe JCP/ Juste du Pin performait mieux que les voitures que je pourchassais. Lorsque les opportunités se sont présentées, j'ai doublé Ranger puis Morad. En fin de course, j'ai pu contenir Ranger pour remporter l'épreuve.


« Ç'a été une bonne course. Je suis très fier de l'équipe Tagliani Autosport qui a fait un excellent travail pour régler les problèmes que j'ai connus au circuit ICAR il y a 15 jours. Une voiture compétitive, c'est le nerf de la guerre actuellement dans notre série, car il y a tellement de bons pilotes qu'on ne peut se permettre d'arriver à la piste sans les bons réglages. Super satisfait. Une victoire importante pour le commanditaire EpiPen. Nous allons tout faire pour poursuivre dans cette voie. »


Ranger mène toujours au classement des pilotes avec 211 points. Avec une course en moins cette année, Tagliani occupe tout de même le cinquième rang avec 175 points.


Les amateurs pourront suivre le déroulement du Grand Prix Pinty's de Toronto le vendredi 5 août sur les ondes de RDS 2 à 22 heures. La division canadienne de NASCAR se déplace dans l'Ouest canadien pour les deux prochaines étapes. La première le samedi 23 juillet au Edmonton International Raceway, et la suivante au Wyant Group Raceway à Saskatoon le mercredi 27 juillet.

RPM Speedway. Samedi 16 juillet, la famille Therrien a été couronnée de succès autant en Modifié qu'en Lightning Sprint. De plus, nous avons connu une première victoire à vie pour le pilote recrue Prostock Yves Hamel #194. Enfin, cette soirée s'est terminée tôt; les finales s'étant déroulées plutôt rondement.

29 voitures ont pris part à cette finale enlevante dont Mathieu Bourgouin #14 et Guy Blain #18 qui ont fait un retour remarqué en terminant 6ème et 10ème.

 

Père-fils Poirier partent premiers et y demeurent jusqu'à ce que le 4 d'Éric Boisvert les sépare à quatre tours de la fin par l'extérieur du circuit. Alex Therrien #39 se glissera plutôt à l'intérieur de Yannick Poirier #28 à deux tours de la fin. Puis au dernier tour, le 39 fera aussi l'intérieur de Boisvert pour la deuxième. Stéphane St-Laurent #29 parti 12ème gagnera 3 places suite au carambolage du premier tour. À la relance, St-Laurent se lancera 7ème. Au 8ème tour, le 29 fera l'intérieur du 75 de Benjamin Mathieu pour la 6ème place. Il rejoindra sa 5ème place finale lors de la relance du 15ème tour.

En effet, dès le premier tour par l'extérieur, il se fait premier et le restera toute la course avec Jordan Poirier #28 à ses trousses. Éric Sundborg #16 fait l'intérieur de Tomy Moreau #22 au tour initiale pour la 3ème, place qu'il conservera jusqu'aux damiens. Guillaume Neiderer #51 fait pareil à Moreau au tour 6 pour la 4ème que le 28P Yannick Poirier tentera de lui prendre en vain.

Guy Viens #15 parti 7ème arrive au top 5 au tour 10 en pratiquant l'intérieur du 38 de Steve Chaput. Viens fait l'extérieur de Jocelyn Roy #48 au tour 16 pour la place 4. Le 51 de Michel Gariépy à l'intérieur se bat avec son compatriote Éric Barabé #15 à l'extérieur pour la 5ème place au 5ème tour. À la relance du tour 6, le 3M de Maxime Desrosiers se jette au milieu d'eux. Le 3M remettra ça à la reprise du tour 8. Le combat à trois se termine au tour 15 avec le départ vers les puits de Barabé.

Maxime Plante #79 qui a remporté avec brio le Dash et nous fait aimer ce genre de compétition, part premier. Il le demeure jusqu'au tour 8 où le 54 de Steve Bernard le contourne de l'extérieur. Bernard s'accrochera à la pôle jusqu'à la complétion de la finale. Mario Clair #22C fort à l'extérieur dépasse au premier tour son frère pour la 4ème place, puis Alan Therrien pour la 3ème. À la reprise du tour 10, Mario met les roues devant Plante pour la deuxième. Dominic Dufault #63 parti 11ème se rend 5ème au tour 12 en faisant l'intérieur de Jean-François Corriveau #96. À partir du 30ème tour, Dufault et Plante croiseront le fer pour la 3ème marche du podium jusqu'à ce que Dufault fasse l'intérieur de Plante au tour 36 et se place ensuite à l'extérieur pour bloquer son passage. Mathieu Desjardins #1M parti 9ème est 6ème dès le 3ème tour. Il perdra une position qu'il reprendra à la relance du tour 19. Au tour 22, Desjardins fait l'extérieur du 39A d'Alan Therrien pour sa cinquième place définitive.

Clément Therrien #39 saisit la pôle au 3ème tour à l'intérieur de Gino Clair #22J. Therrien père ne laissera pas la première place lui échapper de toute la course. Steve Bernard #54 part de sa position inversée 12ème. Il entre au top 5 au 24ème tour en faisant l'extérieur de Dominic Dufault #63 qui le suit au championnat. À la reprise du tour 25, Bernard fait l'intérieur du 96 de Jean-François Corriveau pour la 4ème position. Au 37ème tour, Steve #54 fait l'extérieur du 39A d'Alan Therrien et du 44 de Sébastien Gougeon coup sur coup. Dans le dernier tour, Alan fait l'intérieur de Gougeon pour la 3ème place après une lutte de 18 tours entre eux. Dominic Dufault #63 atteint le top 5 au 19ème tour, mais se battra tout le reste de la course avec le 22J de Gino Clair et le 96 de Jean-François Corriveau pour la reprendre.

Patrick Délisle #53 même les 8 tours initiaux quand le 20 de Pierre-Olivier Breault le surprend par le bas de la piste. Bruno Lafontaine #19 fait la même opération pour la deuxième derrière Breault au tour 13. Délisle connaît des ennuis au tour 15 ce qui fait le 88 d'Evan Morel 3ème. Or à deux tours de la fin, le 9S de Danick Sylvestre se lance à l'intérieur de Morel pour compléter le podium. Enfin, Marc Véronneau #8 parti 16ème joint les 5 premiers à la reprise du tour 15. Benoit Bérubé #7 essayera son intérieur jusqu'au dernier tour en vain.

William Racine #35 dirige presque toute l'épreuve jusqu'à la dernière relance où Bryan Préville #51 le devance par l'extérieur pour aller chercher sa première victoire à vie. Rosalie Nadeau #94 est deuxième devant le 00 de Donovan Lussier pendant 10 tours, puis les deux sont impliqués dans un accrochage. Le champ est libre alors pour Bryan Préville #51 et Vincent Berthiaume #51V derrière William. Après avoir dépassé Racine #35, Préville #51 s'enfuira loin devant.

Even Racine #54 mènera toute la course à la manière de son oncle Steve Bernard dans la première finale Modifié. Danick Messier #63X le suit un tiers de la course, mais Charlyne Galarneau #16 prend sa deuxième place par l'intérieur. Le 49 de Sylvain Carrier les suit. À deux tours de la fin, un accrochage fait reculer Charlyne et Sylvain, ce qui fait Danick #63X deuxième. À la seconde reprise du même tour, le 39a d'Alex Lizotte au bas ravit la deuxième position au 63X.

TOYOTA DEMANDE À LESSARD D'ÊTRE À INDY

Louis Butcher du Journal de Montréal rapporte, dans un texte paru le 17 juillet 2016 http://www.journaldemontreal.com/2016/07/17/lessard-en-piste-a-indianapolis, que Raphaël Lessard, le jeune beauceron et actuel meneur au classement CARS Super Late Model Tour, sera en piste au Anderson Speedway pour une épreuve sanctionnée par la JEGS / CRA All Star Tour.
