Kenseth Outlasts Rain and Competition For Wild PASS South Win At South Boston

SOUTH BOSTON, VA (May 11) – Ross Kenseth took the lead from Trey Mitchell on what proved to be the final restart of the night and was up front when it counted to win the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South Super Late Model event at Virginia’s South Boston Speedway.  In a race plagued by a constant threat of rain, Kenseth’s third career PASS South Super Late Model victory came when the event was finally halted eight laps short of the finish due to a brief shower.  Kenseth becomes the ninth different winner in nine PASS South events held at South Boston dating back to 2006.

 

            “The track was damp and we both spun our tires real bad coming to the green flag,” said Kenseth of the final restart to take the lead from Mitchell.  “Kyle [Grissom] got a heck of a jump and drove hard into turn one, we hit a little bit, but with 15 or 20 to go, that’s racing.  This is a real fun series to run and they called it at the right time.”

            Another strong field of 31 PASS South Super Late Models took time in qualifying with defending series champion Kyle Grissom reeling off a lap of 94.631 miles per hour to set fast time for the fifth time in his career.  But, in the top 10 qualifiers redraw, Grissom pulled #10 and would have to start outside row five to begin the race.

            On the initial start, Wauters’ Racing teammates Tim George, Jr. and Spencer Wauters made contact in turn two sending cars everywhere as they tried to avoid an accident.  On the next restart, PASS Pro Late Model driver Trevor Noles got a good start and took the lead from Trey Mitchell exiting turn two.  Racing was at a fever pitch as team spotters and their drivers were in constant communication monitoring a storm cell that was approaching the speedway.  With about half the field strategizing that they needed to race hard to lap 75 when the race would be official, Mitchell felt it was time to go, making an aggressive three wide move around Noles for the lead on lap 31 as they passed the lapped machine of Bill Catania.

            The caution flew for the fourth time of the race on lap 51 when Wauters and rookie Cole Timm crashed hard at the end of the back straightaway.  As cars began to jockey harder for position with the halfway point approaching, a rash of accidents ensued damaging several cars, including perennial contenders Preston Peltier, Brandon Ward, and others.  

            By lap 75, the race was official with Noles back in the lead over Mitchell.  At this point, the two drivers had clearly established themselves as the drivers to beat leading every lap to that point.  The seventh caution of the night waved on lap 77 when Tim George, Jr. made hard contact with the turn one wall after a spirited battle with Kenseth inside the top five.  By lap 82, Mitchell was continuing to stalk Noles for the lead and would take it from him with a bold move to the outside in turns 3 and 4.  The car on the move was Peltier, who had made his way back into the top 10 on lap 89 despite severe damage to the right front after an earlier incident.

            Back up front, PASS South points leader Jay Fogleman was making up ground in the bottom groove, passing Noles for second with 40 laps to go.  Fogleman reeled the leader in, going three wide with Mitchell and the lapped car of Clete Caywood to take the top spot with 32 laps to go.  Following a hard crash by Brandon Ward and Brandon Lynn in turn one on lap 119, Fogleman and Mitchell were set to duke it out for the lead as rain drops continued to fall on their windshields.  On lap 126, Mitchell caught Fogleman for the lead.  He faked high and then cut down low to bypass Fogleman for the lead entering turn three.

            After the ninth caution flag of the night waved on lap 134 for another hard crash on the frontstretch between Jody Measamer and Caywood, eyes once again turned to the precipitation falling from the sky.  PASS officials decided to allow each team to send a crew member out to wipe off their respective car’s windshields prior to the next restart.

            Coming to the green, Mitchell and Kenseth spun their tires allowing Grissom to get to the inside entering turn one.  As Mitchell slid back to fifth, Kenseth edged out Grissom to take the lead.  The final caution flag of the night would wave on lap 142 when Mitchell and Alex Fleming made contact while battling for fifth causing a chain reaction that saw John Batten spin in turn three and Noles spin into the inside wall on the frontstretch.

            As the rains returned, PASS officials determined that the track was too wet to continue.  The checkered flag waved over Kenseth and the race was called official eight laps shy of its 150 lap distance.  Following Kenseth at the finish were Grissom, Fogleman, Peltier, and Kyle Moon, making his first start for Brad Keselowski Racing.  With Grissom’s second place finish, he closes to within six points of Fogleman for the PASS South points lead.

            “This race was just about circumstances really, just what line you were in on restarts,” said Grissom.  “I was running the bottom then it got wet and lost a lot of grip.  It would have been nice to get that last restart in, I’m just glad the car’s in one piece with all the wrecks we had out there tonight.”

            Rounding out the top ten finishers were Fleming, Kenzie Ruston, Spencer Davis, Mitchell and Powell.

Peterborough Speedway is Set to Kick Off an Action-Packed 2013 Season

Things may be quiet now, but Saturday, May 18th everything will change when Canada’s Toughest 1/3rd Mile Paved Oval roars to life as Peterborough Speedway drops the green flag on a new campaign of short track racing excitement.  Country 105 presents the 2013 season opener with free spectator grandstand admission.  Gates open at 4:00, with racing – featuring Battlefield Four Fun, Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, Moi Parry Spring Service Renegade Trucks, Paul Davis Systems Thunder Cars, Legends and Vanguard Self Storage Late Models – rolling to the line at 6:00.

 

 

Fans can expect an exciting calendar of events at the tight bull ring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City.  The thrills will start in the pit area with the return of the Thunder Cars – featuring 2012 Kawartha champion Matt Spence and fan favourite Dan Price – for the first time since 2006 and extend all the way around the track.  New drivers are expected in each division, including the father and son team of Craig and Brandt Graham of Orono, Ontario in the Late Model and Mini Stock divisions respectively.  Peterborough Speedway owner/promoter JP Josiasse says the holiday weekend lid-lifter is a great way to show the crowd what they’ll be able to expect throughout the year.

 

“To say that I’m excited about this season would be an understatement,” said Josiasse with a broad smile.  “I’m taking calls, receiving e-mail and fax messages in the office morning, noon and night.  Registration forms are coming in the mail, being dropped-off in person and arriving by courier daily.  We’re expecting strong numbers in each class, but won’t have the actual car counts confirmed until we start lining-up the qualifying events on opening night.”

 

Track officials have scheduled special Fan Appreciation Nights, presented by Pepsi – with toonie spectator grandstand admission – for June 1st, July 20th and August 17th.  The Country 105 sponsored Mid-Summer Shootout – with extended distance feature races for the 5 regular divisions – is on the calendar for Saturday, July 13th.  As always, racing wraps-up for the year with the Lucas Oil Products Autumn Colours Classic.  This year’s edition – the 21st annual – is booked for Friday, Saturday and Sunday – October 11th through 13th and promises fans and competitors from one end of the province to the other an action-packed thrill ride.

Veteran Driver Hopes For Reversal Of Fortune In NASCAR Canadian Tire Series

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 10, 2013) – If you only took J.R. Fitzpatrick's side of the story, you'd think he hadn't had a good result in five years in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. You'd walk away believing that he had either wrecked, broken or blown an engine in each and every one of his 66 career starts in the series.

 

 

“People are going to start calling me 'Black Cloud.' That's how I feel things keep going for me, like there's this black cloud hanging over me,” Fitzpatrick said. “Ever since NASCAR's taken over (the old CASCAR Super Series), it seems like we've never been able to get the monkey off our back.

 

“It seems like a little bit of bad luck keeps hitting us. Near the end of races, the car falls off or something happens. We've been working hard on keeping that from happening.”

 

The statistics, however, paint a slightly different – and more positive – picture.

 

The 25-year-old from Cambridge, Ontario, has eight career victories, 11 poles, and he's finished in the Top-3 in the final point standings in each of the last three seasons. Fitzpatrick has an amazing 30 Top-10 finishes in 37 races from 2010-2012.

 

“Fitzy's probably one of the most talented drivers in the series,” said two-time Canadian Tire Series champion D.J. Kennington. “Every race he goes to, he's a factor.”

 

Kennington won his Canadian Tire Series championships in 2010 and 2012. Ironically, it was Fitzpatrick who finished second to him each time, and there's likely nobody better than Kennington to diagnose precisely what it will take for Fitzpatrick to unseat him as champion.

 

But Kennington hasn't won multiple titles by being dumb.

 

“I know exactly what it is he's missing,” Kennington said with a laugh. “But I'm not telling you.”

 

No matter. Fitzpatrick will point to a number of near misses on the race track – like a dominating performance at Kawartha Speedway, where he led 236 of 250 laps and failed to win, or being spun out of the lead while en route to certain victory at Barrie Speedway, or breaking in the second-to-last race of the 2010 season to cost him the title that Kennington eventually won – as examples of championship aspirations gone awry.

 

But nothing stings worse, or likely sums up, Fitzpatrick's hard-luck status, better than the race at Delaware Speedway in June of last season. With 20 laps to go, he's stretching out his already comfortable lead on the rest of the field, when a freak occurrence intervenes. The lights at the track shut off mid-race, and the red flag comes out.

 

While sitting there stopped in the darkness under the red, a leak in the brake line of the No. 84 Equipment Express Chevrolet bleeds out. And Fitzpatrick's chances at victory are gone.

 

“When people talk about (NASCAR Canadian Tire Series), they say the 84 team is good – good driver, good team – and we put on a good show with exciting finishes,” Fitzpatrick said. “But they've also said the one thing missing is little things.

 

“It's frustrating to even talk about. Shoulda, coulda, woulda. There's no question we're a championship-winning team, but there's just always that little bug that bites us.”

 

Fitzpatrick has the presence of Don Thomson Jr. as his crew chief. Thomson is one of Canada's most decorated short-trackers, having won multiple CASCAR championships – including five in a row from 2001-2005. His last full season behind the wheel came in 2011, when he finished fifth in the final NASCAR Canadian Tire Series standings.

 

He moved atop the pit box for Fitzpatrick last season, but not for the first time. Thomson built and crew chiefed a late model program for Fitzpatrick earlier in Fitzpatrick's career.

 

“Really the place is built around him. He really created this whole empire at Fitzpatrick Motorsports,” Fitzpatrick said of Thomson, whom he likens to an older brother. “He's by far the most experienced guy in the pits, and he's a great crew chief. I think being a crew chief for first time last year while not driving was a learning curve for him, but he's been doing his work and the whole program is getting better.”

 

Fitzpatrick sees the leadership role that Thomson has embraced, and he realizes that he may need to do more of that himself, too.

 

“The car's always been fast everywhere we've gone, but so many things that keep happening are out of your control,” Fitzpatrick said. “Sometimes I come home and I want to kick anything that's in my way. Every time we're winning and we're fast, it seems something stupid happens. It comes to a point where you go, 'Why me?'

 

“I think me not getting so worked up and emotional in the car, that would be perfect start for us. I'll admit, I'm pretty bad for that. Look at that race at Delaware – we stop (for the red flag) and the brakes start leaking. Who do I get upset at? I can't get out and start kicking the calipers, can I?”

 

“I've got to let my emotions turn into a positive influence on the team. I've gotten (mad) in the past, and I think that's what hurt us.”

 

It took Kennington 18 years to learn how to manage races well enough to win his first championship in 2010.

 

“It's patience. I honestly think that's the only thing holding him back,” Kennington said. “You don't have to push Fitzy to go fast. You've got to pull him back. He's got one speed, and that's wide open.

 

“It's hard to learn that. You're a racer. It's like I always say, you want to go as fast as you can for as long as you can. It's hard to mentally tell yourself you need to save some stuff, and it's even harder when you see guys driving away from you that you know you can catch.”

 

Fitzpatrick appears ready to take that next step toward a championship. Perhaps he's even beginning to see the sun start peeking through those “black clouds.”

 

“I think the biggest thing that keeps me going is I want a NASCAR championship,” Fitzpatrick said. “I think part of the big blowups I've had in the past is frustration over the whole season. We're winning, we get dumped or something else happens. I'm probably not as mad as the guy I'm yelling at as it seems.

 

“Hey, we're a racing family. I've been around it my whole life. My dad raced, and he had a real passion for it. I'm the same way.”

No. 1 pick Benjamin can't wait for ARCA Menards 200 at Toledo

(TOLEDO, Ohio) - Kyle Benjamin was at Toledo Speedway Thursday, testing for the upcoming Menards 200 presented Federated Car Care.

 

 

For him, the one-day test session as almost like a break in the action. That's because he was able to fly to Toledo.

 

"Luckily, we flew here," he said. "I've been on the road so much lately. I think we went back and forth to Indiana about 15 times. It's a lot, being on the road."

 

Benjamin isn't complaining, however. The 15-year-old high school sophomore is happy when he gets to a race track.

 

"When we get to the race track, it makes it all worth it," he said. "I just think we need like a private jet."

 

Benjamin will be making his third start of the 2013 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season at the Menards 200 May 19. He will be driving the No. 15 Venturini Motorsports car that he already has captured one SCOTT Rookie Challenge award and a second-place finish. And, he holds the distinction of being the youngest driver to ever start an ARCA Racing Series event.

 

"Coming to Toledo is a really big deal," he said. "I have a really good car and the crew has worked so hard on it. I can't wait to get here for the race. I really want to win this one - I want to win all of my races, but this one would be great."

 

Benjamin isn't concentrating on any one series or running for any championship in points this year. Instead, he's criss-crossing the country in his family-owned late model and the ARCA Racing Series.

 

"This year is about winning races," he said. "I want to get to as many different tracks as I can and gain all the experience," he said. "I want to win races - championships don't really matter right now."

 

He's certainly gaining national attention with his races. He's the youngest ARCA/CRA Super Series winner in series history when he won at Lucas Oil Raceway at the age of 14 a year ago. He also won four straight late model races at New Smyrna Speedway (Fla.) during Speedweeks, 2013.

 

Benjamin typically travels to test sessions with his father, Steven Benjamin. He is enrolled through an online home-schooled program to keep up with his studies.

 

"I don't know what I would do without that," he said. "I'd probably be expelled or something."

 

This week, Benjamin found out he was chosen as the overall No. 1 "draft" choice in a Speed51.com poll. Now in its 10th year, the Speed51.com short track draft annually asks motorsports experts, media members and others who they would sign to a development contract if they were in charge of race teams. 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Brad Keselowski was among those who submitted names.

 

"That's a pretty big deal," he said. "I used to read about the Short Track draft when I was a kid. Well, I guess I still am a kid. But, it's nice and an honor. It's neat to think someone like Brad Keselowski even knows my name."

 

Another reason Benjamin is anxious for the Menards 200 presented by Federated Car Care is its going to be broadcast live on SPEED.

 

"I think this is my first-ever TV race," Benjamin said. "That is really going to be awesome. I can't wait for the race. I'm ready to race today."

Modified racers to tackle northeastern asphalt and dirt tracks in five-race championship

RUTLAND, VT – Northeastern Modified stock car racing teams will be hitting the road in 2013.  Management at Vermont’s Devil’s Bowl Speedway has announced the creation of the all-new Northern Modified Challenge Series for center-seat Modified cars.  The five-race schedule will be the ultimate test for drivers and race teams, as events will be staged on both asphalt and dirt surfaces.

 

The Northern Modified Challenge Series will follow Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s 2013 Bond Auto Parts Modified division rulebook, allowing a wide variety of racecars from tracks across the Northeast to compete.  While the sealed General Motors “602” crate engine will be the primary power plant that most teams use to compete, the events are also open to cars using 358 cubic-inch engines with a carburetor restrictor plate issued by series officials at each race.

The inaugural Northern Modified Challenge Series features a five championship events staged on four vastly different race tracks.  The Challenge begins on Sunday, May 26 at 1:30pm at the high-banked quarter-mile at Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, VT.  The track’s 51st annual Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic will raise the curtain on the Challenge schedule with a 50-lap event, run as a companion race to the Vermont State Late Model Championship Series.  Featuring 18-degree banked corners and the infamous “Widowmaker” wall, Thunder Road is sure to take even the best race teams to task in its first-ever event for dirt-style Modifieds.

Several teams have already turned laps in test sessions at Thunder Road in preparation of the May 26 event.  Todd Stone of Middlebury, VT, who won the opening event at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on May 5, was one of the drivers who tested in April, turning fast laps of 12.6 seconds – nearly a half-second faster than the Late Model cars that compete there regularly.  Not only will the Thunder Road event award championship points toward the Northern Modified Challenge Series, it will also give each competitor 50 bonus points toward the Devil’s Bowl Speedway track championship.

The Northern Modified Challenge Series will have an exciting two-track weekend doubleheader on August 2-3.  The Challenge runs on its home track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, VT for the second annual C.J. Richards Memorial 67 presented by Carrara Masonry & Concrete on Friday, August 2 at 7:00pm.  The Modified division has produced exciting side-by-side action and straightaway speeds topping 125 miles per hour at the Devil’s Bowl half-mile in its four seasons as an asphalt track.

The second half of the doubleheader brings the Northern Modified Challenge Series to Canaan Fair Speedway in Canaan, NH for a 50-lap showdown presented by S.K. Bean’s Enfield Garage on Saturday, August 3 at 6:00pm.  Dirt-style Modified racing is not unprecedented on the fast, smooth 1/3-mile asphalt track at Canaan, although the most recent event for the cars there was staged nearly a decade ago.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway will host the Northern Modified Challenge Series again during its annual Vermont 200 Weekend on September 14-15.  The event’s format, which will be designed to create exciting competition, will be announced at a later date.

The Northern Modified Challenge Series will crown its inaugural champion on Saturday, October 12 on the tough, racy 1/4-mile clay oval at Canaan Dirt Speedway in Canaan, NH at the second annual Jaycox Property Maintenance-sponsored “OctoberFAST” event.  The Charlie Elliott Memorial Canaan Cup 100-lap main event will pay a cool $2,500 to the winner.

 “We are so proud and excited to have created the Northern Modified Challenge Series for 2013,” NMCS Director Mike Bruno said.  “I have to thank Tom Curley at Thunder Road and Dick Therrien at Canaan for their great support.  Our tracks will showcase the talent level of the Modified drivers and teams in this region, and we are all really looking forward to these races.”

3e saison en SPORTSMAN LUCAS OIL ASE pour MARC-ANTOINE DEMERS et son 422.

AVEC UNE RUTILLANTE CHALLENGER DERNIER MODÈLE

 

 

Saint-Eustache, 10 mai 2013. Dès ses débuts en Stock car dans la division Sport-Compactes, il y a quelques années,  Marc-Antoine Demers, de Le Gardeur, Qc a démontré son talent en piste avec de multiples championnats, et une nombre impressionnant de victoires avec sa voiture Honda 422 Prtout à travers le Québec.

 

 

 

Au cours des deux dernières saisons, la Honda a fait place à une voiture Sportsman, le plus haut niveau de compétition de l’Autodrome St-Eustache. Seuls la couleur jaune et le chiffre 422 sont demeurés la marque de commerce de la voiture Pavé Brique Design de Marc Antoine Demers, maintenant âgé de 22 ans..

 

En 2013, Marc-Antoine, supporté par ses parents, quelques amis et ses précieux commanditaires, entreprendra sa troisième saison en Sportsman ASE Lucas Oil aux commandes d’une rutillante Dodge Challenger fraichement préparée par son équipe. « Cette année on y va pour être parmi les meneurs. On est d’attaque !!....» de préciser le jeune pilote, qui depuis sa graduation en Sportsman, où la compétition est de plus haut niveau, a obtenu en 2011, 7 top 10 et 2 top 5, et qui a amélioré sa marque en 2012 avec 8 top 10 et 3 top 5, une fiche qu’il est résolu d’améliorer encore en 2013..

 

En plus des 8 courses régulières à l’Autodrome St-Eustache, les pilotes Sportsman Lucas Oil ASE prendront part à une épreuve aux États-Unis, à Plattsburgh et seront du Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières.

 

La direction de l'ASE et de l’ANCA sont donc heureux de compter            l’étoile                                                          montante MARC-ANTOINE DEMERS parmi leurs pilotes Sportsman ASE Lucas Oil et  souhaitent la meilleure des saisons  à cette équipe de Le Gardeur.
