Brandon Feeney Gets the Most Performance From a Limited Racing Budget

Over the years, the fan base at Peterborough Speedway has become quite familiar with Brandon Feeney. The 29-year-old racer from Orono, Ontario has spent time at the controls of a Bone Stock, Super Stock and is now in his second full season of action in the headline Late Model division. A hardworking auto mechanic when he isn't spending time at the track, Feeney has become well-known for doing more with less in his quest for the front of the pack. He might not have the same funding as some of the other teams, but the driver of the #38 machine is still enjoying a solid 2019 season.


"Racing at this level is all about having fun and I can't remember when I've had a better time at the track," Brandon Feeney said. "I've been able to run with the leaders all year and add some strong finishes to my resume. Maybe there's a feature event win in the team's future; I don't know. Right now, it feels great to be one of the cars in contention to make it to victory lane."

Feeney says that compared to some of the equipment the team had employed in the past – which actually had more experience than the driver – this year's Late Model chassis is a relatively new MRE piece that Connor James used in 2018. It was acquired during the off-season from Ontario Legends Series racer Kevin Foisy, who had the winning ticket when the car was auctioned-off.


"We bought the original Bone Stock car in 2014, ran it for a couple of years and then handed-it down to my father to race," the driver said. "The Super Stock and Late Model that I used in 2018 had been around quite a while and had a ton of laps on them. They were great rides to help me gain some additional track time and experience. It also males it easier to appreciate the car we've been running this year."


Heading into the final dates of the regular season at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, Brandon Feeney sits 3rd in the Late Model point standings. No stranger to hard work, Feeney doesn't have a garage or a shop and does most of the work on his equipment in a dirt driveway at his house, or inside the trailer with the help of his girlfriend Bree Froude and friend Mike Nelson. 

"I've been lucky to be around a group of other racers who pitch-in and help on my stuff when they're not running their own," Feeney said. "John Baker Jr. and his son Brock, Dan Price and Chris Mitchell are always happy to get their hands dirty at my house or at the racetrack".

July Wraps-Up With a 6 Division Saturday Night at Peterborough Speedway

Fans and race teams alike always look forward to the arrival of a new season and then – just like the action on the track – it all goes by so quickly. Another month of Peterborough Speedway's 2019 schedule comes to a close Saturday, July 27th with a star-studded night of short track excitement. On the docket will be hometown Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, KOD Disposal Super Stock and Late Model divisions; along with the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series and double features for the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series. Late last week, track officials announced that the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks will also be part of the show.


"We have some great sponsorship partners and I have to thank Kevin Besta from Stoneridge Speciality Insurance and Jeff Drimmie of KOD Disposal for stepping-up to the plate to help give this exciting division another chance to race," said track owner/promoter J.P. Josiasse. "Drivers and teams have done their part to make this class grow and we're happy to reward their effort."


For the Saturday, July 27th show pit gates will open at 2:30, with the general admission grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and the night's first qualifying heat at 6:00. This year's edition of the Hot August Nights Racing Series takes the green flag Saturday, August 3rd with the OSCAAR Modifieds and Pro Sprints joining the hometown Bone Stock, Mini Stock and Super Stock divisions, with pre-show corn roast to kick-off the event. The 2019 regular season may be winding down, but there is still plenty of headline action ahead of the Saturday, August 31st running of the Championship Clash. Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series teams come to town for their 100 lap extravaganza Saturday, August 10th with the year's 3rd and final Summer Toonie Night – presented by Pepsi – on the calendar for Saturday, August 17th.

AUTODROME DRUMMOND


C'est sous une chaleur écrasante que le championnat mi-saison prit son envol.  Quelques milliers d'amateurs bravèrent dame nature et prirent place dans l'estrade principale.  C'était presque inhumain de regarder les pilotes enfiler leurs combinaisons ignifuges et que dire des préposés à chacun des casse-croûtes servant poutines et hot dogs en quantité, respect à vous toutes et tous.

Les qualifications furent faites rapidement car la condition du circuit était (encore une fois) exceptionnelle.  Tout semblait au beau fixe et rien ne laissait présager ce qui nous attendait pour les finales!

La finale MODIFIÉ débuta à un train d'enfer dès le premier tour.  C'est le sorelois Claude Brouillard qui occupait la pole position mais plusieurs gros noms constituaient les premières rangées.  Dès le deuxième passage, l'autodrome prit des allures de tornade avec 27 voitures résolues à prendre la victoire.  Au quatrième passage, Mathieu Boisvert perdit le contrôle de sa monture à l'entrée du virage 3, Gino Clair n'y peut rien et emboutit la voiture 73jr.  A la relance rien ne laissait croire que les 46 tours suivants seraient considérés par plusieurs comme des tours d'anthologie.  Le spectacle offert par Brouillard, Hébert, Clair, Bernard et Buissière fut incroyable.  Ces 46 tours furent tout simplement sensationnels.  A la mi-course, David Hébert parvint à devancer Brouillard par un nez et tout le monde croyait que l'affaire était dans le sac, que la course était finie.  Qui aurait pu croire qu'elle venait à peine de commencer?  C'était mal connaître le vétéran sorelois.  Le tour suivant, il reprit son dû et plus jamais il quittera la position de tête.  Mais derrière, les positions ont changées maintes et maintes fois avec des chasser-croisés tout en talent et en respect… plus personne ne parlait de la chaleur et tous étaient sur le bout de leur siège.  Une course d'anthologie je vous dis, rien de moins ! Quel spectacle !

Chez les SPORTSMAN, ce fut tout aussi enlevant.  Antoine Parent prit la position de tête rapidement après quelques dépassements tout en talent.  Il semblait rapide et pratiquement intouchable.  Ses tours étaient précis et ses chronos excellents. Mais derrière, Alex Lajoie et Eric Lefebvre s'offrirent un duel électrisant pendant plusieurs tours.  Lajoie prit la mesure de Lefebvre et, de là, la voiture 33x n'avait qu'une seule idée en tête, combler l'écart avec Parent et l'attaquer.  Ce fut fait avec brio.  Alex Lajoie était juste trop fort.  Antoine Parent devra patienter encore un peu avant de sabrer le champagne.  Notons également la troisième position de Michael Richard obtenue après plusieurs dépassement à l'emporte pièce.

Du côté des STR, une vieille rivalité a refaite surface pour la finale.  Sabrina Blanchet faisait une course sans bavure mais Carl Labonté ne l'entendait pas ainsi.  Un copier-coller de la dernière épreuve me direz vous ?  Eh bien oui, Labonté prit la mesure de la talentueuse Blanchet pour la victoire.  Manuel Messier prit la troisième marche du podium après quelques dépassements spectaculaires de la ligne extérieure.

Les MOD-LITE furent également à la hauteur des attentes.  Cette catégorie offre toujours des épreuves de qualité et ils n'ont pas fait mentir leur réputation.  Michael Forcier prit la victoire de brillante façon en repoussant les attaques constantes de Eric Désilets.  C'est Steve Comeau qui fermera la troisième marche du podium.

Chez les SLINGSHOT SR, c'est Keven Letendre qui fut le grand gagnant.  Du côté des JR, Loic Messier était tout sourire sur la plus haute marche du podium !

Grâce à la collaboration de la Ville de Trois-Rivières et d'autre organisateurs d'événements tels que la Corporation des événements de Trois-Rivières, Adrénaline Urbaine et Festi-Drag.TV, les Trifluviens et ceux qui les visiteront lors de deux premiers week-ends d'août pourront profiter de partys gratuits offrant spectacles musicaux, démonstrations et initiation de sports urbains ainsi que retrouvailles tant sur le site du GP3R qu'au centre-ville de Trois-Rivières. 


Le populaire groupe Bleu Jeans Bleu, en tournée avec son album Perfecto et ses succès viraux Coton Ouaté et J'ai mangé trop de patates frites, sera de passage en prélude à La Magie des Feux GP3R présentée par la Ville de Trois-Rivières le 10 août prochain. Le leader du groupe Mathieu Lafontaine, alias Claude Cobra, aura ainsi la chance de faire sa marque au Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières autrement que comme son père Marcel, promoteur de la série F1600 Canada, et de son frère Hugo, qui a participé au GP3R en F1600. 


La veille, lors de la traditionnelle journée portes ouvertes du vendredi NASCAR, un immense party rockabilly au bord de la piscine de l'expo nous fera faire un voyage dans le temps avec Manny Jr. et ses Cyclones accompagnés de l'endiablé Israël Proulx au piano. L'occasion servira de prétexte pour des retrouvailles de la FIlière Player's avec les ex-membres Alex Tagliani, Jean-François Dumoulin, Marc-Antoine Camirand, Bertrand Godin et même Claude Bourbonnais - qui sera au départ des épreuve de Formule Atlantique Historique - qui ont tous confirmé leur présence. 


Planche nautique dans la piscine de l'expo

Avec la collaboration d'Adrénaline Urbaine, l'organisateur du Défi-Hors-Piste, le GP3R se servira aussi de la piscine de l'expo pour faire un retour vers le futur. Théâtre de spectacles de ski nautique dans les années 1970 avec Pierre Plouffe et les Aqua Stars, la piscine du parc de l'exposition sera reprise d'assaut par des athlètes qui, ère du temps oblige, rivaliseront d'habileté sur des planches nautiques tirées par un système de treuil Konex à la fine pointe de la technologie. Adrénaline Urbaine gardera même le système en place tout au long du week-end pour initier les planchistes en manque de sensations fortes. 


D'ailleurs, toute l'enceinte de la piscine de l'expo prendra des airs d'il y a 50 ans avez la Zone Exposition internationale d'autos de Lévis où une vingtaine de  camionnettes vintage seront exposées dans un décor qui rappelleront la belle époque où NASCAR organisait ses courses directement sur la plage de Daytona Beach. Les camionnettes seront aussi utilisées pour la présentation des pilotes de la série NASCAR Pinty's, en prélude aux 50 Tours Hotel le Concorde du dimanche 11 août. 


La Ville de Trois-Rivières participe aux célébrations

Ces célébrations du 50e ainsi que le retour de la grande roue sur la rue des Forges, la venue des camionnettes McGregor OffRoad, la création d'une mascotte pour le GP3R et la première phase de l'initiative écologique GP3Vert ont toutes été rendues possibles grâce, en partie, à une contribution spéciale 50e anniversaire/GP3R de la Ville de Trois-Rivières. 


Bien entendu, le premier week-end d'activités du GP3R ne sera pas en reste. Ainsi, les voitures des championnats du monde et des Amériques de rallycross ainsi que les motos et les quads paraderont encore jusqu'au centre-ville le vendredi 3 août avant une séance d'autographe des pilotes, une démonstration des pilotes de drift du DMCC et un spectacle du groupe The Schooners. Le lendemain, c'est le Johnny Gélinas Band qui animera le parc portuaire. Pour les amateurs de belles mécaniques, le Meet-Up revient sur la rue Papineau avec des bolides modifiés, neufs et exotiques à faire rêver, les 3 et 4 août. Également, Harley-Davidson sera sur place avec ses nouvelles motos de la gamme Softail afin de permettre aux amateurs d'effectuer des essais sur route, à partir du coin Papineau et Des Forges. L'accès au MeetUp et à l'Expérience Softail est gratuit.


L'autre parade, le 8 août, mettra en vedette les bolides de la Coupe Nissan Micra, où MIchel Barrette et son fils Nicolas piloteront. Les camions des équipes de la série NASCAR Pinty's seront aussi du rendez-vous avec les pilotes Pinty's comme Marc-Antoine Camirand, les frères Dumoulin et Alex Labbé qui rencontreront les amateurs au parc portuaire le 8 août au soir. La portion musicale de la soirée sera assurée par RoadRock. Le lendemain 9 août, c'est Time Krash qui sera sur scène tandis que le samedi 10 août, soir de la Magie des Feux, Bobbey T. and the Jukebox et Domino accompagneront Bleu Jeans Bleu.

John Baker Jr. Lands His First Ontario Modifieds Series Win of 2019

With a borrowed power plant under the hood, it was former series champion John Baker Jr.'s time to shine as the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. and Gen-3 Electrical – returned to Peterborough Speedway Saturday, July 13th for the Mid-Season Bash.


Craig Scott and Randy Hollingsworth paced the field of a dozen starters to the Great Canadian RV green flag to kick-off the 25 lap feature event. Right off the bat, Hollingsworth drifted high on the track, opening the door for the rest of the field to take off in pursuit of Scott. The race's first 2 yellow flags – both for incidents on the front stretch – came early and opened the door for the local fan favourite they call J.B.J. to take the lead.


Dwight Brown, who has returned to the series for the first time in several years and Chad Strawn – who swept the tour's most recent events at Flamboro Speedway – were fighting it out for the runner-up spot, as Baker Jr. began navigating his way through some of the slower traffic with less that 10 laps to go.


John Baker Jr. captured the checkered flag by an advantage of nearly half a straightaway over Brown and Strawn. Alex Lees, Josh Gruntz, Rick Warnes, Rob Warnes, Bob Franks, Hollingsworth, Willow Barberstock, Scott and Alex Cuzzilla.


Ontario Modifieds Racing Series notebook: John Baker Jr. also scored a pair of qualifying heat wins, with the others going to Alex Cuzzilla and Josh Gruntz…Cuzzilla retired from the main event early after the power steering failed in his #50 machine…The tour takes a couple of weeks off before heading back to Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, July 27th.

Mid-Season Bash Turns Into a Saturday Night Party at Peterborough Speedway

Everyone loves a party and Saturday, July 13th – with the help of Pure Country 105 – Peterborough Speedway marked the unofficial halfway point of the 2019 schedule with its annual Mid-Season Bash, featuring the hometown Bone Stock, Renegade Truck, Super Stock and Late Model divisions; with the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series as special guests and timed King of the Hill spectator laps as the intermission feature.


Brad Lavalle and Jeff Dolley were on the front row as the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks ran a holdover feature from June 1stto open the night. Lavalle took the early lead, with Paul Boundy slipping into 2nd. A caution flag for an incident in the 3rd turn with 8 laps complete, brought the field back together, but no one had anything for Lavalle. Taking his turn in the truck that won the 2018 championship, the hometown favourite scored the win over Boundy, Dolley, Terri-Anne Whittern and Stacy Switzer.


Marlie Owen and Howie Crowe brought the KOD Disposal Super Stocks to the line to kick-off the feature action for Saturday, July 13th. Owen took the lead early and had the rest of the pack fighting for spots behind her. A yellow flag for a backstretch issue with a handful of laps on the scoreboard brought everyone back together and produced some exciting action. Mark Gordon was able to wrestle the lead away at lap 13 and held-on for his second-straight Super Stock win. Owen, Tim Burke, Tyler Bouillon and Crowe completed the top 5.

Hollingsworth drifted high at the drop of the green and after a pair of early race caution flags for front stretch issues, John Baker Jr. took control of things. With Dwight Brown and Chad Strawn fighting for the runner-up spot, the fan favourite claimed the win. Alex Lees and Josh Gruntz followed the top 3 finishers across the line.


Front row starters Alex McGibbon and Jeff Dolley led the way as the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks hit the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road for a 20 lap feature. Stacy Switzer was looking a spot right off the bat and moved into the runner-up position with just a handful of laps complete. The race's only yellow flag waved a couple of laps later, with Brad Lavalle taking the lead at the halfway mark. He may be sharing the ride with Ontario Legends' racer Nicholas Ledson, but on this night it was all Brad Lavalle. McGibbon was second, with Dolley, Switzer and Bill O'Hara rounding-out the top 5.


Kyle Batty and Brandon Feeney brought the Late Model pack to the Great Canadian RV green flag for a 25 lap 'A' main. The yellow flag waved with just a pair of laps on the board and the field came back to the stripe with Tim and Kyle Batty on the front row. Defending track champion Dan McHattie moved into second shortly after the restart and took the lead with 8 laps complete. McHattie – who lives less than half an hour from the track – survived a late race a caution and even a 15 minute red flag when the track lighting went out to take the win over Mark Gordon, Kyle Batty, Doug Wills and Sean Walker.


The night closed-out with a 20 lap Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock feature with Shawn Solomon and Brad Lavalle on the front row. Solomon took an early lead, but a yellow flag for an issue in the 4th turn with only a handful of laps on the scoreboard brought everyone back together. Chris Tubman – who was looking for his first win of the season – brought his #88 machine into a fight for the lead near the halfway mark, with Corey Strawn using the outside line to take 3rd just over 5 laps from the checkered flag. Lapped traffic came into play during the closing stages of the event, but Tubman was able to hold off reigning champ Ryan Oosterholt for a trip to victory lane. Strawn, Kris Khan and Kyle Novis were 3rd, 4th and 5th.


Dan Archibald picked-up a pair of Super Stock heats, with the others going to Marlie Owen and Howie Crowe. Brad Lavalle, Stacy Switzer, Paul Boundy and Jeff Dolley split the Super Stock preliminary rounds. Former series champion John Baker Jr. had a pair of Ontario Modifieds Racing Series qualifiers, with the others going to Alex Cuzzilla and Josh Gruntz. Dan McHattie scored a couple of Late Model heat race checkered flags, with the others going to Mark Gordon and Tim Batty. Bone Stock qualifying rounds went to Sean Kennedy, Ryan Oosterholt, Steve Finnegan, Corey Strawn, Kyle Novis and Kris Khan.


All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review, post race technical and safety inspection.


Bullring bullet points: For the second straight week, a weather front moved-in before the gates opened. As result, only about a handful of teams were about to practice before racing got underway…Castleton, Ontario's Bobby Cousineau used the Late Model division to make his first career stock car racing start. A former demolition derby participant, he ran the #42 machine to an 8th place finish…Nick Clarke was scheduled to run with the OSCAAR Hot Rods at Brighton Speedway, but when that show was rained-out, he towed his #8 car to Peterborough was added to the Super Stock feature…Larry Crowe Jr. set fast time in King of the Hill, with lap of 16.42 seconds…Feature winners celebrated in a new-look Dart Heating & Air Conditioning Victory Lane, with an updated banner and a freshly painted floor.


Action at Peterborough Speedway continues Saturday, July 20 with the year's only appearance by the Hoosier Racing Tire Ontario Outlaw Super Late Models. Also on the agenda will be the home track Bone Stock and Mini Stock divisions and a 50 lap feature event for the Super Stocks. Pit gates open at 1:30, with the general admission grandstands unlocked at 4:00 and racing at 5:00.

Heartbreaking Finale for Marc-Antoine Camirand
NASCAR Pinty's Series—Pinty's Grand Prix of Toronto
 

Toronto, ON, July 14, 2019—Marc-Antoine Camirand was hoping to come back strong to the streets of Toronto, on Saturday, during the Pinty's Grand Prix of Toronto. Camirand turned out to be a serious contender for the victory until late in the race, but with two laps to go, he crashed his n°22 GM Paillé Chevrolet Camaro in the tire wall.
 
After he scored the second-quickest time in practice, Camirand qualified second and knew he could achieve a first podium finish in 2019, after a difficult start in the 2019 NASCAR Pinty's season.
 
"We have been so fast all weekend. I know I can be quick here and I like racing here. It felt like I could achieve great results this weekend," stated the driver of the n°22 GM Paillé Chevrolet Camaro.
 
Early in the race, he has been able to follow a fast pace and kept is second place, despite fierce competitors and intense restarts. "The first restart has been challenging. I dropped a few positions, but I focused to climb back to second place. My n°22 GM Paillé Chevrolet Camaro was so quick that I gained three spots back before the second yellow flag. We were very fast, but it didn't turn out like I was expecting it," explained the driver from St-Leonard-d'Aston, QC.
 
At the second-to-last restart in the 35-lap race, he has been able to have a good start and exit turn one in front of his 22 Racing teammate Alex Tagliani. He was heading to a first victory this season, his second in his NASCAR Pinty's career. Unfortunately, after he built a small gap ahead of his teammate, he came too fast in turn 8 and hit the tire barrier, forcing a last full course yellow and a NASCAR Overtime.
 
"We were so close to victory, but I made a mistake. I braked too late and it cost us a probable checkered flag. I feel so sorry for my team, my sponsors and my supporters, but now it's time to look forward and bounce back during our trip West," he concluded.
 
Marc-Antoine Camirand and the n°22 GM Paillé Chevrolet Camaro will be back on track as the NASCAR Pinty's series heads to its annual Western Swing and resumes on July 24thfor the Velocity Prairie Thunder Twin 125s at Wyant Group Raceway, in Saskatoon, SK.

Toronto (Ontario, Canada), le 14 juillet 2019 – Au volant de la voiture #47 WeatherTechCanada | Groupe Bellemare, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin a fait la démonstration du fin stratège qu'il est sur le circuit de Toronto hier. Après avoir enregistré le tour le plus rapide lors des essais libres du vendredi matin, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin et son chef d'équipe Robin McCluskey étaient convaincus que les réglages de la voiture lui assureraient un temps parmi les meneurs. Quatrième sur la grille de départ, le vétéran des circuits routiers s'impose au-delà de légères défaillances mécaniques et se bat avec ténacité jusqu'à croiser le fil d'arrivée en troisième place. Il signe ainsi son cinquantième top-5.
 
La météo a complexifié quelque peu la journée du samedi lorsque la pluie abondante et les orages ont nécessité le report de la course à 18h55 au lieu de 17h30. C'est donc sur une piste mixte que les pilotes ont pris le départ. La course de 35 tours, ponctuée de trois neutralisations, s'est terminée en prolongation et a ravi les spectateurs d'action jusqu'au drapeau à damiers.
 
« La préparation et le comportement de la voiture étaient vraiment intéressants, sauf quelques ratés du moteur qui m'ont coûté un peu de puissance et empêché de doubler sur les droits malgré des sorties de virage plus rapide. L'équipe WeatherTech Canada | Groupe Bellemare a diagnostiqué rapidement la problématique et nous avons convenu que la meilleure façon était de faire avec pour cette course. Je me suis donc concentré à aller chercher le maximum de la voiture à chaque tour. Nous avons terminé troisième et cela prouve que nous avons pris la bonne décision et cela augure bien pour le reste de la saison, » explique le pilote de la voiture #47 WeatherTech Canada | Groupe Bellemare.

Le 8 mai 2018, c'est avec fierté que les frères Jean-François et Louis-Philippe Dumoulin ont dévoilé « L'Espace Dumoulin » au Musée Gilles-Villeneuve. À l'occasion des « 50 ans sur le volant » de la famille Dumoulin, les amateurs de course qui n'ont pas pu découvrir « L'Espace Dumoulin » l'an dernier, auront la possibilité de le faire cette année, puisque l'exposition se poursuit. Vous aurez l'occasion de voir la création de Luc Pilon qui a inspiré le logo des 50 ans.
