Stout Easter Bunny 150 Field Could Prove Tough For PASS Points Leaders

CHARLOTTE, NC (March 27) – As the weather warms and families get ready for a relaxing Easter holiday together, Pro All Stars Series (PASS) fans from around the country are preparing to make their annual trek to the base of North Carolina’s famed Blue Ridge Mountains this weekend.  Since 2006, they look forward to Easter weekend every year in the hopes of seeing the best Super Late Model racers in the country compete at Hickory Motor Speedway. 

 

This year’s Easter Bunny 150 looks to have all the ingredients of another instant classic.  Besides being a PASS South Super Late Model points race, the Easter Bunny 150 will also be a PASS National Championship event and the final PASS National race prior to the TD Bank 250 at Oxford Plains (ME) Speedway in July.  A good finish in the Easter Bunny will go a long way towards at least locking in a provisional at Oxford Plains for National Championship contenders like Jay and Tate Fogleman, two-time PASS National Champion Ben Rowe, Spencer Davis, Kyle Desousza and DJ Shaw.  PASS National Points Leader Joey Doiron is coming off an impressive early season win in the Winter Meltdown 200 at Auburndale (FL) Speedway and will be attempting to qualify for his first Easter Bunny 150 this weekend.

“Hickory has a ton of history and it’s a huge deal to head to Hickory as the [National] points leader,” said Doiron.  “I’ve personally never seen the track, but the last time we went to a track we had never seen before [Auburndale] we dominated the second half of the race and picked up the win.”

            PASS South Points Leader Austin Theriault and defending PASS South Champion Kyle Grissom come to Hickory Motor Speedway with different approaches, but a common goal.  Both hope to get maximum points and stake their claim to one of the biggest Super Late Model races in the country.

            Theriault will be racing Hickory for the first time in his career.  But that was also the case at PASS South’s first two races of the season at Dillon Motor Speedway and Myrtle Beach Speedway.  Theirault won at Dillon and finished second at Myrtle Beach. He and teammate Zak Hausler will be led by veteran crew chief Gary Crooks, who has had solid runs at Hickory in the past guiding the likes of Trey Mitchell and Landon Cling.  Needless to say, Theriault is optimistic about his chances.

            “We’ve been taking some really good cars to the track every week and I think we have a shot to come out with a win in the Easter Bunny,” said Theriault.  “I think Hickory suits my driving style coming from the North where you’re trying to conserve and be around at the end and I’m anxious to get to the track to see what I can learn and get better at.”

            Grissom, on the other hand, has probably driven more laps at Hickory Motor Speedway than any other track on the circuit.  In addition to racing Late Model Stocks there, Grissom made his first career PASS South start at Hickory in 2011 and scored his first series win in last year’s Easter Bunny.  But, unlike last year when he came to Hickory as an upstart, this year he comes as the driver to beat according to many observers.  And that’s a role he relishes.

            “We set the bar pretty high winning the first Easter Bunny race we ever ran, but Hickory’s such a crapshoot because the track changes so much and you never know what engine combination might take off and run well,” said Grissom.  “I’m looking forward to going back, it always a good field of cars, some of the toughest competition you’ll see all year.  It’s a neat race and a lot of fun to be in.”

As Grissom alluded, an all-star field of racers from all over North America have already sent in entries hoping to be a part of Saturday’s 8th Annual Easter Bunny 150.  Johanna Long returns to PASS for the first time since 2009 joining a host of drivers attempting to make their first Easter Bunny 150 including Bobby Measmer, Jr., Cole Timm, Karl Weber, Canadian driver Steve Laking, Chris Bohlman, Michigan’s Mark Beard and Joseph Mursuli.  Former Easter Bunny 150 winner Preston Peltier will also be back looking to win along with veteran drivers Clay Rogers, Trevor Sanborn, Brandon Ward, Jimmy Doyle, John Batten, Bill Catania and Clete Caywood.  Family racing traditions will continue for Justin Allison, Jared Irvan, and Harrison Burton, who will attempt to do the double by racing in the PASS Pro Late Model race and the Easter Bunny 150.  Local fans will have something to cheer about as Tyler Church returns driving a team car to Peltier, PASS South rookie Brandon Lynn, and Trey Gibson, piloting the Oscar Blues Brewery entry out of Colorado.

Action gets under way on Friday, March 29th with rotating practice from 3 – 6:30 PM for the PASS South Super Late Models, PASS Pro Late Models, and the brand new CCS Modified division.  On Saturday, March 30th, pit gates open at 10 AM, with rotating practice for all divisions from Noon – 2:50 PM, qualifying at 3:30 PM and feature racing at 6 PM.

THE STORY

FORT KENT, Maine – PASS South Series point leader Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, looks to put Brad Keselowski Racing back in Victory Lane when he heads to the PASS Easter Bunny 150 at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, N.C., on Saturday, March 30. Theriault, who hasn't finished worse than second in either of the first two PASS South races this season and is the only driver in the series to post Top-5 finishes in each of them, has never been to the famed .363-mile oval. He is coming off a win in the season opener at Dillon (S.C.) Motor Speedway earlier this month, followed by a runner-up finish the following week at Myrtle Beach Speedway in the BKR No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Ford Fusion. BKR finished second in each of the two PASS South races contested at Hickory last season with driver Landon Cling, including this PASS National Series points race.

DID YOU KNOW?

·         Austin Theriault won the PASS South Series South Carolina Clash 150 at Dillon Motor Speedway on March 9 to become the first Brad Keselowski Racing development program driver to win a race since Landon Cling won at South Boston Speedway on June 9, 2012.

·         Austin Theriault hasn't finished worse than second in each of the last three PASS-sanctioned Super Late Model races he's entered. Prior to the South Carolina Clash 150 win, he was victorious in a family-owned car in the PASS North Series season finale at Oxford Plains Speedway in October of 2012.

·         Austin Theriault finished third in the prestigious Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway in each of the last two seasons, becoming the youngest podium finisher in the 40-year history of the race in 2011.

·         Austin Theriault will compete in six PASS North Series races this season – three at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway and three at Oxford Plains Speedway – in the same family-owned car where he won races at each of those tracks in 2012.

 

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

AUSTIN THERIAULT, Driver of the Brad Keselowski Racing No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Ford Fusion, On his strong start to the PASS South Series season in 2013: “We've been pretty good this year everywhere we've been and unloaded. I'm looking forward to it this weekend. I think we'll have another shot at contending for a win. It's all about keeping momentum up and building on that each week, and I feel like we're doing that pretty well. If we keep this up, we will be a threat for winning anywhere we go.”

On the strong field of teams and drivers expected this weekend at Hickory Motor Speedway: “You definitely try to keep it in the back of your mind. If you think about it too much, though, there's also the chance of taking your eye off what's important – getting comfortable in the car, staying on top of the track, the basics. If you start focusing on who's around you and what's around you for competition, it's really easy to lose sight of the big picture.”

On Hickory being a notoriously flat track that's tough on equipment: “It seems like a lot of these PASS races are huge as far as tire management is concerned, and Hickory probably isn't going to be any different. A lot of times, if you don't race the race like you need to, you can have a good car for the first 100 laps and not win the race. It's important to run the whole race and run all 150 laps – you have be around at the end. You don't always have to have the best car to win these races. But if you do have the best car and save your stuff, you'll be in contention at the end.”

On improved qualifying efforts for the team in 2013: “That was one of the goals I set for the year, was to qualify better. We've been happy with it, but there's always room to get better. I'm going to keep working. The cars have been fast, everybody's doing the homework that has to be done at the shop, and we're improving on all fronts. It's not just in qualifying, either.”

While the PASS South Series takes next weekend off, Austin Theriault and Brad Keselowski Racing are headed to the Southern Super Series season-opener with a 125-lap event at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway on Saturday, April 6... The Southern Super Series begins its inaugural season of competition with the event at the Fairgrounds Speedway.

3rd-Generation Beech Ridge Champion Sets Sights On Title Defense, PASS North Series

 

WINDHAM, Maine – Bradley Babb isn't one for hyperbole. Ask him about what it means to be a third-generation champion at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, joining his father and grandfather as a champion in the track's premier division, and he's already looking ahead.

 

 

“I don't really know what to say to it,” said Babb, 20, of Windham, Maine. “I mean, I still just want to go out and win races like they've always done.”

 

Babb's father, Bobby Babb Jr., is a five-time track champion at Beech Ridge and still competes in a car fielded by the family out of the same race shop, while grandfather Robert Babb Sr. is a two-time BRMS champion. Last season, though, the youngest Babb took his first step toward cementing his own legacy under the family name – winning the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track and state championships in a three-way battle that came down to the final night (and final laps) of the 2012 season.

 

After previously spending time away from the weekly wars by touring with the ACT Late Model Tour, Babb said it was the lessons he learned on the road that helped him when he finally returned to his roots at Beech Ridge.

 

“It's kind of odd going from long-distance (ACT) races back to short (weekly) races, but I learned patience last year,” Babb said. “When we were running the Tour, the only reason I had patience was because I knew I had to save my tires. Last year, I learned you need to keep the car in one piece and save something for the end there, too.”

 

Babb posted a win in the season opener and then locked up his title run with three consecutive Top-10 finishes to close out the year in the ultra-competitive Pro Series division for Super Late Model cars. Babb had just two finishes outside the Top-10 all season, the model of consistency he knows he needs to duplicate in 2013 if he wants to join his father and grandfather as a multi-time track champion.

 

“It's the only championship I've ever won, so I don't have anything to compare it to,” Babb said. “But one thing I know is that you have to have a consistent car every week and worry about yourself and not what everyone else is doing. It's a lot easier to run for a championship when you're only worrying about how your car is going instead of trying to pay attention to how fast everyone else is all the time.”

 

This offseason, he and his father had a new car built – though they are undecided as to whether Bradley or Bobby will race it. Whoever chooses not to will end up piloting Bradley's championship-winning car.

 

To start the season, Babb plans to enter the No. 4 Babb Wood Contractors Chevrolet in PASS North Series events at Oxford Plains Speedway (April 21) and Beech Ridge Motor Speedway (May 5). He said he will evaluate where to focus his racing efforts after those two seasons, along with his crew chief and father, Bobby Babb Jr.

“I wish we never had to stop at the end of last year – but the snow kind of makes that happen, I guess,” Babb said. “Neither one of our cars is quite ready – so I'm glad we have a few more weeks, anyway. Take the new car to Oxford to see how it goes. I'm ready to get started.”

ACT Makes Key Staff Changes

Lynch Joins Série ACT Castrol as Chief Steward

Waterbury, VT – American Canadian Tour officials have announced the hiring of several new officials across the Série ACT Castrol, Thunder Road, and the American Canadian Tour for the 2013 season.

 

The overhaul is headlined by the hiring of former Kawartha Speedway (ON) manager Derek Lynch as the Chief Steward of the Série ACT Castrol.  Lynch started racing with ACT at just 17 years old in the late 1980s, and had won the Oxford 250 before heading to the NASCAR Busch North Series.  His career eventually led him to Charlotte, NC, where he worked in fabrication for Darrell Waltrip racing.  In 2000, he married Cait Curley, daughter of long-time Thunder Road promoter Tom Curley, and took over management at Kawartha Speedway.  He left Kawartha at the end of last season.

 

“I think the Castrol series is much like Kawartha.  These teams are professional operations, and it’s going to be fun to work with guys doing this at such a high level,” said Lynch.  “There are a lot of guys leading the charge that I’ve had the pleasure of racing with over the last few years, but what really stands out for me is the young talent on this tour.  There is a great veteran presence, but there is also a talented group of young guys starting to make a name for themselves.  I think that’s critical.  I can’t wait to get started,” he finished.

 

Lynch will also be joined by fellow Ontarians Tom Kenyon and Dave Brown.  Kenyon, a long-time chassis builder, will serve as an official on the Série ACT Castrol, while Brown will become the Chief Tech Inspector after six years as the Head Tech Inspector at Kawartha Speedway.

 

On the ACT US side, John Hulburd has joined the staff for the 2013 season.  Hulburd got his start at Catamount Stadium flagging and eventually race directed for the NASCAR Busch North Series.  He has continued to flag for ACT part-time over the years, and will also be doing some race directing in 2013.  Former Oxford Plains Speedway official Randy Varney will also be joining the full-time staff, after assisting ACT part-time for a number of years.

 

At Thunder Road, Director of Competition Dean Gallison has bolstered the tech staff with the appointment of former Late Model and Tiger Champion Chuck Beede, who will take over as Steward and Chief Technical Inspector of the famous “Flying Tiger” division.  Beede is a well-known Tiger car builder, and the Beede family has been competing at Thunder Road for over three decades.  Chuck’s brother Danny served as the Chief Tech Inspector for the ACT ProStock series.

 

Gallison also appointed former Street Stock Champion Crew Chief Jamie MacAskill to join long-time official Sonny Barney and assist with the tech inspection for the Allen Lumber Street Stocks.  In addition, rejoining the Thunder Road staff will be Barre’s own Jamie Parker, who will take on control and inspection of tires for various divisions, along with former flagger Mike Renaud who will return in 2013.

 

Thunder Road Promoter and ACT President Tom Curley felt the changes were necessary, and has high hopes for the upcoming season.

 

“The time has come to bring in the best quality people to succeed over our foreseeable future,” said Curley.  “The addition of the Castrol officials and Dean’s (Gallison) appointees will certainly send the message to competitors that we are bringing in knowledgeable people to assist them in their racing and competitive needs,” he finished.

 

The 2013 season will kick off with the ACT season opening event at Lee Speedway on April 13/14.

ST-EUSTACHE, 25 mars 2013 - Rencontré au lancement de la saison de Joanne Ledoux le 24 mars, le pilote de la division Sportsman Lucas Oil ASE/anca, MARIO CARRIER a confirmé son retour en piste à l’Autodrome St-Eustache lors de l’ouverture officielle de la saison 2013, le 18 mai prochain, après une année sabbatique au cours de laquelle il n’a effectué que quelques tests sur circuit routier.

 

 

Le pilote de Ville de Lorraine, qui s’était porté acquéreur d’une nouvelle voiture avec châssis tubulaire l’an dernier n’a pas été en mesure de participer régulièrement à la compétition en raison d’un manque de temps et de commandites.

 

«....Cette année regarde bien au niveau des commandites et je me propose de débuter la saison en participant aux courses de façon régulière, ainsi que d’y être pour le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières....» d’affirmer le sympathique pilote qui a bien l’intention d’être présent à la première session d’essais gratuite offerte par l’Autodrome St-Eustache en mai prochain.

 

Les directions de l'Autodrome St-Eustache et de l'ANCA souhaitent un bon retour à MARIO CARRIER en Sportsman Lucas Oil à l'Autodrome St-Eustache et une saison des plus excitantes au pilote de la voiture #61.

UN RÉSUMÉ DE LA DERNIÈRE RÉUNION DU 17 MARS 2013

La Série Sporstman Lucas Oil, a tenu sa dernière réunion officielle avant le début de la saison 2013 au Méchoui International ce dimanche, 17 mars.

M. André Poulin, président de la Série, a présenté les officiels de la Série, en précisant qu’il s’était entouré d’une équipe plus mature afin d’élever la qualité de la série.

 

Présent sur place, M. Marco Bédard, photographe officiel, a pu annoncer les différents produits qu’il offrira tout en démontrant sa grande disponibilité envers les équipes et la Série.

Les rôles et responsabilités de chacun des officiels ont été précisés. Ceux-ci ayant été décrits dans un précédent communiqué.

M. Sylvain Doyon a tenu à prendre la parole afin d’expliquer son orientation pour la saison. Il a précisé qu’il tenait à une attitude positive et un sain esprit sportif tout au long des programmes. Il s’est montré disponible et ouvert pour une bonne communication avec tous. Par conséquent, il a demandé d’éviter tout commentaire négatif en particulier sur les médias sociaux spécifiant qu’il en était de la réputation de la Série mais aussi par respect pour les commanditaires tant ceux qui s’impliquent auprès des équipes et que ceux de la Série.  

Lucas Oil, commanditaire principale de la Série, remettra à chaque pilote lors de la journée de pratique et d’inspection qui se tiendra à l’Autodrome Montmagny le 4 mai prochain un ensemble d’huile d’une valeur de 200$.

Lors de cette journée, 25 points seront alloués au classement; cette journée est obligatoire et tout empêchement doit être communiqué à M. André Poulin dans les plus brefs délais. Il a été précisé par le directeur technique que les seuls les points de sécurités et quelques éléments spécifiques seront inspectés lors de cette journée. Il ne s’agit donc pas d’une inspection mécanique en lien avec la règlementation de la Série. La fiche médicale, complétée par le médecin de chaque pilote doit être remise au plus tard lors de cette journée.

Cette année, le magazine Pole Position consacrera deux pages à la Série Sportsman Lucas Oil. Il va s’en dire que l’appui de notre commanditaire principal a permis cette ajout qui en découle d’une plus grande visibilité pour tous.

Trois expositions à venir seront aussi rehausser la visibilité des équipes et la Série; Place Fleur de Lys de Québec les 22, 23 et 24 mars prochain,  l’Hôtel le Montagnais de Chicoutimi les 5, 6 et 7 avril ainsi que le Salon de l’auto Sport de Québec les 11, 12, 13 avril.

M. Poulin a présenté les ententes de partenariat signées avec les Entreprises M. P Roy ainsi qu’avec Frameco Ltée. Le premier sera le fournisseur officiel des systèmes de radios et offrira un service directement sur les pistes. Quant à Frameco Ltée,  une entente a été signée pour les 3 prochaines années faisant de l’entreprise le fournisseur officiel de pneus. Pour la saison 2013, les pneus vendus seront de marque Good Year et disponible directement par le biais de la Série. En collaboration avec l’association des pilotes, des tests seront faits pour la prochaine saison afin de choisir la marque utilisée pour les années subséquentes.

Quant au système pour élaboré les départs en qualification, M. André Poulin précise que les 24 premiers partiront selon leurs positions au classement à la condition d’avoir participé à la course précédente. Pour la 1ere course de l’année, les recrues partiront derrière lors des qualifications. Un tirage au sort aura lieu le 4 mai pour tous les pilotes en prévision de la course du 18 mai à l’Autodrome St-Eustache.

Les prix de la semaine ont été présentés, spécifiant que ceux-ci seront remis en certificat cadeau sauf le titre de recrue de la semaine. En plus des fonds de points et des bourses du dernier programme, c’est plus de 7300$ qui seront remis lors du banquet de fin de saison qui se tiendra le 19 octobre prochain au Méchoui International.

Le championnat de fin d’année apportera son lots de surprises avec une garantie de 300$ aux qualifiés et 2000$ au gagnant. De plus, avec les tours payant le gagnant pourrait aller jusqu’à 5000$ de bourse présentement. Une première dans la Série, comportant 150 tours en 2 étapes avec un arrêt aux puits obligatoire.  Les pilotes ayant participé à 100% des courses au cours de l’année auront un départ garanti en finale A. Cette course est en collaboration avec l’Autodrome Chaudière 2012 inc.

L’implication fait pour l’association des pilotes par M. Réjean Blanchet et M. Steve McKibbin a été souligné par M. Poulin.

La réunion s’est terminée avec un mot du président de l’association des pilotes, M. Pier-Luc Labbé quand à l’enregistrement possible de l’association.

THE STORY

MANCHESTER, Maine – Reid Lanpher of Manchester, Maine, returns to JR Motorsports this Saturday, March 16, in the Southern National Motorsports Park Twin 100s – the second event in the 12-race Dirty Dozen Cup – in Lucama, N.C. The 14-year-old Lanpher will drive the No. 8 JRM Chevrolet for the team owned by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. on the .4-mile banked oval. Lanpher posted a pair of Top-12 finishes two weeks ago at Southern National Motorsports Park in his first career Late Model start, finishing 11th in the first 100-lap race and 12th in the second 100-lap feature. The Dirty Dozen Cup consists of 12 races – six each at Southern National and Motor Mile Speedway in Virginia.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

REID LANPHER, Driver of the No. 8 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, On how he feels heading to Southern National Motorsports Park for a second time with JR Motorsports this weekend: “I'm so much less nervous than the first time I went in there two weeks ago. I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can do this week knowing what we have for a car, what we're going to see for competition, and what the track is like.

 

“I've got a lot of laps in there, so it should be a lot better off going into the event. Hopefully, we'll keep gaining on what we did last time. Every time I get in the car, I learn something different. It's about finding little things and learning and learning off of those. Hopefully, we'll find a couple more tenths (of a second per lap) and get in the Top-10 this week.”

 

On how his goals have changed for the return trip to Southern National: “Like I said, we really want to get a Top-10. We were bumming last time because we were right in the Top-10 there for one of those races toward the end. A lot of teams were in the same boat we were, not having raced much or at all this year before that, so we know everybody else is going to be better this race – just like we hope to be. We can't expect to gain and other people not to.

 

“It's still going to be very, very difficult competition, but I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do.”

 

On whether the style of racing surprised him at all: “No, not really. There were just a lot of good guys there. They've all been racing a long time. Most all of them raced with respect, and there wasn't anybody I was intimidated to be be around on the track. Everybody was clean out there, but the only difference down there is they don't seem to mind wrecking as much as we do up here (in the northeast).

 

“But as far as the racing goes, everything's really close. It's good racing down there.”

BKR Development Driver To Run Own Car In Six PASS Races In Maine

 

SOUTH PARIS, Maine – Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, will compete in at least a half-dozen PASS North Series races in his home state in 2013, including the prestigious 40th running of the TD Bank Oxford 250 on July 21.

 

 

The Brad Keselowski Racing development driver and most recent winner in the PASS South Series will run the same Crazy Horse Racing chassis that he won races with in New England on both the ACT Late Model Tour and PASS North Series.

 

“I feel like we can definitely compete up there with this car,” Theriault said. “Crazy Horse puts out a good product, and everybody knows I worked with them for quite a while now. It's going to be awesome to go back up and be a part of what they're trying to build.”

 

Theriault moved to Mooresville, N.C., to work for Brad Keselowski Racing this winter. He won the PASS South Carolina Clash 150 last weekend at Dillon Motor Speedway in the closest finish in PASS South Series history and will race three more times this spring in the BKR No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Ford before making his first appearance in New England.

 

He plans to compete in the PASS North Series opener at Oxford Plains on April 21 and then join the series again on May 5 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. He'll return to Beech Ridge on July 6, two weeks before the Oxford 250, and then close out his New England schedule with the PASS 300 at Beech Ridge in mid-September and the PASS North Series finale at Oxford on September 28.

 

Both Beech Ridge and Oxford have significance to Theriault's career. He made his first career ACT Late Model Tour start at Oxford in 2009, and he earned his first career victories at both Beech Ridge (ACT) and Oxford (PASS).

 

“It comes down to the fact that I think we can compete for wins up here, and it's also nice to not forget where you came from and support the people who supported you for a bunch of years,” Theriault said. “That's why I'm racing up north – to support (Crazy Horse Racing owners Mitch and Judy Green) and all the people who have played a part in my career and made it possible for me to get where I am now.”

 

For Theriault, returning to the Oxford 250 was something he was certain he wanted to do. In 2011, he finished third in the Oxford 250 to become the youngest podium finisher in the history of of the marquee midsummer event, and he repeated that performance in 2012 with another third-place finish.

 

In both cases, he turned in his eye-opening efforts in a Crazy Horse Racing chassis. He backed those up by winning the PASS North Series Championship 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway last October.

 

“I'm excited. We've got a really competitive package for Beech Ridge and Oxford,” Theriault said. “We were able to show that last year. With a little bit of work we were able to go out and compete with the Super Late Models at Oxford.

 

“It's a flexible package that they have (at Crazy Horse). We demonstrated it at Oxford, as far as being able to switch back and forth from an ACT Late Model to a PASS Super late Model in a small amount of time with a relatively small amount of money. It's its own learning curve being able to do that, but it makes it easier with the right people and the right knowledge behind you.”

Theriault Nips Peltier For History Making Win In PASS South Opener at Dillon

DILLON, SC (March 9) – Austin Theriault led less than a hundred feet to edge out former Pro All Stars Series (PASS) National Champion Preston Peltier in a photo finish to win the 8th Annual South Carolina Clash 150 at Dillon Motor Speedway.  Theriault's .120 second margin of victory in the PASS South season opener was the closest margin in series history.  Theriault and Peltier made contact coming out of turn four racing to the checkered flag as they both maneuvered to pass the lapped machine of John Hunter Nemechek with Theriault just having enough to eke out the victory.
            "I didn't think I had anything for him [Peltier], but that lapped car gave me an opportunity there and I took it," said Theriault, making only his second career PASS South Super Late Model start.  "I hate that it came down to that, but I felt like I had the inside there down on the apron.  I went there and hoped that it stuck and luckily we had the lapped car there.  It hasn't quite hit me yet, but we're on a roll and I think we're gonna have a great season."
            After starting 10th, Peltier methodically worked his way to the front taking the lead for the first time on lap 101. Despite momentarily losing the lead on a restart, Peltier regained the top spot on lap 116 and looked to be on his way to a second straight win in the South Carolina Clash.  However, as the leaders entered lapped traffic late in the race, Theriault was able to close on Peltier and was just a car length behind as the white flag waved.  With Nemechek racing hard with Bobby Gower for a top 10 finish, the lead duo had a decision to make entering turn three on the final lap.  Peltier erred on the side of caution while Theriault took a chance that ultimately led to him getting the win.
            "A lot of those lapped cars were courteous and got out of the way and I was a little bit disappointed that the 8 car [Nemechek] didn't just pull down to the inside of the track," said a noticeably upset Peltier after the race.   "So I tiptoed down there into turn three…the next time I'm behind that 29 car [Theriault] for the win, I'm gonna win that race."
In qualifying, defending PASS South Super Late Model Champion Kyle Grissom was fastest with a lap of 91.232 miles per hour around the egg-shaped 4/10 mile speedway.  Grissom's good fortune continued as he drew pill one during the redraw allowing him to start from the pole for the main event. 
            At the drop of the green flag, Grissom jumped out to the lead over outside pole starter Brandon Ward.  Grissom continued to lead through the early going as the race was slowed briefly for a few minor incidents.  The cars on the move early on were 4-time PASS North Champion Ben Rowe and Kevin Powell who started 21st and 22nd respectively.  Rowe and Powell came up through the field together and were both in the top 10 by lap 45.
            Steve Wallace ran in the top five much of the first half of the South Carolina Clash but began to struggle after contact with Theriault while battling for 5th on lap 84.  Eventually, Wallace would retire from the race and finish 23rd.  With 56 laps to go, defending PASS National Champion Jay Fogleman and Peltier moved around Ward and set their sights on the lead car of Grissom.  Peltier got by Fogleman for second and was able to pass Grissom for the lead with 49 laps to go.
            The race's biggest incident occurred with 42 laps to go when the cars of Bobby Measmer, Jr. and Bill Catania collided on the front straightaway while battling for 8th.  Measmer made hard contact with the outside wall just passed the start/finish line and came back across the track in front of oncoming traffic.  With cars going everywhere, RA Brown, Alex Fleming, John Batten, and Karl Weber were collected causing considerable damage to all of their machines.  After a lengthy red flag to clean up the speedway, the field was once again under caution just a lap later when Joe Boyd had a right front tire go flat sending him hard into the turn one wall.
            Despite losing the lead to Grissom on a lap 112 restart, Peltier moved back by with 34 laps to go.  Grissom and Fogleman struggled with their cars after the red flag and fell out of the top five.  Theriault assumed second and began to close the gap on Peltier.  With his last lap heroics to secure the win, Theriault has the distinction of having won last year's PASS North season finale at Oxford Plains Speedway in Maine and this year's PASS South opener in South Carolina.  Following Theriault and Peltier at the finish were Kevin Powell, with his best career PASS South finish, rookie Brandon Lynn, and Clay Rogers, who fought his way back to the front after pitting with a flat right rear tire early in the race.  Rounding out the top ten Gus Dean, Grissom, Fogleman, Catania, and Gower.
            12-year old Harrison Burton took the lead at the drop of the green flag and led all 75 laps to take a dominating win in the PASS Pro Late Model division.  Burton's win marked his first ever in a full-bodied stock car after moving up from the Quarter Midget ranks. 
            "It's just a huge deal to me with everybody in the shop working so hard and to come out with a result like this and win for me is huge," said Burton afterwards.  "It's a fun track, but it's also very challenging which makes it a great place to race at."
            Burton jumped to the lead at the start over fast qualifier Trevor Noles.  The only major incident of the race occurred on lap 12 after Joey Padgett got sideways coming out of turn four causing Tate Fogleman and Tyler Audie to take evasive action.  Fogleman and Audie made hard contact on the front straightaway and came to a grinding stop along the inside wall.  Both cars would be finished for the night.  Burton led flag-to-flag to take the win over Noles, Jeff Batten, Padgett, and Nick Robinson.

Hunter Moody took his first career win in the Allison Legacy feature over Casey Hillenburg and Justin Laduke.

NASCAR Fines Denny Hamlin For Comments Made Following Race At Phoenix International Raceway

 
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 7, 2013) – NASCAR has fined driver Denny Hamlin $25,000 for comments he made following the March 3 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway.
 
NASCAR determined that Hamlin violated Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) of the 2013 NASCAR Rule Book.
 
NASCAR issued the following statement regarding the penalty:
 
"Following the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event last Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway, Denny Hamlin made some disparaging remarks about the on-track racing that had taken place that afternoon. While NASCAR gives its competitors ample leeway in voicing their opinions when it comes to a wide range of aspects about the sport, the sanctioning body will not tolerate publicly made comments by its drivers that denigrate the racing product."
