Plattsburgh, NY-It was the annual “Kids Backpack Giveaway Night”

Plattsburgh, NY-It was the annual “Kids Backpack Giveaway Night,” with all weekly divisions in the house at Airborne Park Speedway on Saturday. As the youngsters collected the donated backpacks with the end of their summer vacation in sight, modified driver Thomas Cook celebrated the end of his winless streak, halting a long drought with a visit to victory lane in the Hartson Total Opening 358 Modified main event.

Cook fired from outside the front row as he and Matt Woodruff led the field to the green flag. The race started with a bang as there was contact coming off turn four on the opening lap between Chris Raabe and Dave Camara, ending Raabe’s evening. When racing resumed, Woodruff powered off of turn two to take the top spot with Cook facing a challenge from RJ Tresidder for second. A few laps later, Cook started to get his Moody Mile Motorsports Machine rolling on the outside. Cook overtook Woodruff off turn four on lap 10, but Felix Roy was the car on the move. With 10 laps remaining, “Hollywood” pulled within a car length, but a lapped car hindered his progress as Cook opened up a larger advantage. Cook’s car got tight with two circuits remaining, allowing Roy to move in, but Cook was just too stout as he hung on for his first 358 Modified win at “The Big A.” Roy finished second, followed by Tim Fuller, Mike Mahaney, and Dany Gagne.

Evan Roberts started dead last in the J&S Steel 25-lap feature, but it didn’t deter his effort for the night whatsoever. Roberts navigated his way through the pack and passed the entire field to collect his second victory of the season. Charlotte Morin jumped from the pole to lead the first 11 laps, with Keith Pelkey in pursuit before the caution flew when Dylan Rabtoy experienced a problem. Meanwhile, Roberts had already driven his way to the eighth spot. On the restart, Morin went back to the point with Michael Wright slipping past Pelkey for second, as Roberts continued to charge. With five laps to go, Morin seemed to have things under control, but the yellow was unveiled again on lap 19. Three laps later, with Morin scooting away from Wright, caution came out once again to set up a two-lap showdown. Coming to the white flag, Morin and Wright made contact, with Wright attempting the slide job for the lead, sending both to the back of the field. “The Iceman” was the beneficiary as he was gifted the lead and fought off Pelkey for the win. Pelkey, Nick Heywood, Caleb Durgan, and Tanner Forbes rounded out the top five.

In the RainPro of Vermont Limited Sportsman Modified feature, Gary English started in the seventh spot but rapidly sliced his way toward the front. David Johnson controlled the early stages with Brogan Roberts trying to follow in his older brother’s footsteps. Roberts whittled away at the Johnson advantage every lap and was within two car lengths with five laps to go. Roberts grabbed the point off turn two on lap 16, then he and Johnson made contact, spinning them both out down the backstretch. Gary English inherited the lead on the restart and was about to put another win in his back pocket, but caution came out with two laps left on the scoreboard, giving Johnson and Roberts new life. When the green came back out, English assumed control again and cruised to his second win of the season. Kobe Hernandez placed second. Johnson and Roberts rallied for third and fourth. Cody Gregoropoulos was fifth.

Shawn Duquette and Billy Thwaits came into the Renegade feature only separated by four points in the championship race, and the duo dominated the field again on this night. Brad Bushey controlled the early laps, but Duquette and Thwaits were coming. Duquette swept around Bushey on lap eight, but the battle was not over. Duquette, Bushey and Thwaits drove three-wide into turn three on lap 10, with Thwaits nabbing the lead. “Billy Bullett” seized control from that moment on, rolling away for his fifth win of the season. Duquette was second. Bushey third, Tyler Irwin fourth, and Nathaniel Guay fifth.

The opening feature of the night was the Crown Vic 15-lap main event, and once again Richie Turner made short work of the field. Turner was shot out of a cannon when the green flag flew and was in the lead by lap two after original leader Trevor Jaques suffered a mechanical issue. And that was all she wrote. Turner slipped off into the night to earn the dominant victory. Turner lapped nearly the entire field to stand on top of the podium for the fourth time this season. Andrew Lopes crossed the line second, followed by Jaycee Turner, Josh Muir, and Scott Richner

The night wrapped up with the always entertaining Mini Stock 15-lap feature. Glenn Engstrom didn’t waste any time moving from the third spot on the grid to grab the lead. Engstrom built a comfortable advantage and seemed to have the win sewn up, but the yellow lights came on with four laps to go. Engstrom got a great restart and quickly built a cushion again. With fierce battles going on behind him, Engstrom pulled away for win number two of 2026. Junior Laporte, Jake Fountain, Brandon Osher, and Ken Tourville completed the top five.

“Thursday Night Thunder” continues at Airborne Park on Thursday, August 20th with a $1,000-to-win Mini Stock Special. 358 Modifieds, Sportsman Modifieds, Limited Sportsman Modifieds, Renegades, and Mini Stocks will also make up the card. Grandstand gates open at 5:30 p.m. Racing is at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission is $15. Kids 12 and under are free. Pit admission is $30 for members and $40 for non-members.
