WEST HAVEN, VT – Stock car racer Chris Bergeron isn’t backing off any time soon.  In his first season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway last summer, the veteran driver posted four victories and the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model division championship.  He wants even more success this year, and he’s willing to get it the hard way.

“I’m going for it,” Bergeron said.  “If there’s an opening on the outside lane – even if I only have a ten-percent chance of passing the car in front of me – I’m going to try.”

A sizzling summer-long battle with rookie Josh Masterson came down to final lap of the season, and Bergeron won by just four points.  The Claremont, NH runner says he won the championship – the fifth of his career – with a mix of hard-charging runs, respect for his competitors, and a touch of perspective.

“Most people don’t see racing the way that my team and I do,” Bergeron said.  “We go to the track to have fun and to focus on the race that night,” Bergeron said.  “If you run up front the championships will come, but that means you have to go after every spot rather than just settle for a decent finish.”

Bergeron found himself having fun running with some young racers last year.  “Robert Bryant, Brandon Atkins, Josh Masterson, and a few others, I’ve tried to help them learn a few things,” Bergeron said.  “Some of them took a few weeks to settle in to the Late Model cars and figure out how to race at this level, but by the end of the year they were great to race with.  I have a ton of respect for them.”

Bergeron also gives credit to his team.  “My son, Cory, and guys like Gary LaClair, Tony Frasier, Tim Bergeron, Phil Chastenay, and Tom Munuka are what makes this car fast, and especially Larry Stevens, who’s in the garage with me almost every night,” Bergeron said.  The team returns with sponsors Gary’s Claremont Tire, Phil’s Signs & Stripes, Revered Painting, Ray Morin, and Vermont Life Safety, and together they’ll try to become the first repeat Late Model champions in Devil’s Bowl’s asphalt era.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway opens on Sunday, May 4 at 1:30pm with the Spring Green event for the American-Canadian Tour Late Models and the Bond Auto Parts Modified, Renegade, and Central Vermont Motorcycles Mini Stock divisions of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.  The Late Model division’s regular season championship opens on Friday, May 16.

ACT YOUNG GUNS LOOK TO CHALLENGE IN 2014

        Waterbury, VT –The best group of young talent in nearly 30 years has emerged to challenge some of the biggest stock car racing stars in the Northeast during the 2014 American Canadian Tour (ACT) upcoming season.

 

“Having this many talented young teams is exactly what ACT racing was designed for. All these teams have come out of weekly tracks and are now testing the longer distance events. ACT tries to create schedules that will still allow teams to race at their “home tracks” during the height of the race season. We have lots of events scheduled in early Spring and later in the Fall. Watching these new young teams develop has become one of the most fun parts of the business for me. There is nothing more exciting than to see a young racer win his/her first major event!!”, said Tom Curley, long-time promoter of ACT racing.

 

The new campaign is led by two former Rookie of the Year contenders, Jimmy Hebert from Williamstown, VT and Bobby Therrien of Hinesburg, VT. There is a great deal of excitement about the depth of talent in the field as the 2014 campaign begins at Lee USA’s Governor’s Cup 150 on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Hebert is the defending champion of the Governor’s Cup. He also won a second event on the mile at the Sanair Super Speedway in St Pie, Quebec a year ago. Therrien is led by veteran crew chief Pete Duto and his Fast One/Subway race team. Defending ACT Rookie of the Year Therrien handily won a 150-lap feature at the White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, NH during his inaugural touring year in 2013.

 

One of the most consistent racers during last year’s 16-race season was Mooresville, North Carolina’s Ben Lynch. Lynch finished an impressive 5th in points with eight (8) top ten finishes during the campaign in 2013. Joining the generation of young talent for the coming season on the ACT traveling circuit will be Travis Stearns from Auburn, ME driving the Mickey Green-prepared, Richard Green entry. Stearns also garnered his first win in his rookie season during 2013, winning the prestigious Labor Day Classic 200 at Thunder Road, beating a stellar field of regular Thunder Road teams and ACT teams.

 

Part-time tour contenders making first-time, full efforts in 2014 are Emily Packard, a Thunder Road weekly regular in 2013, and Brandon Atkins from Ausable, New York. As first-time touring and part-time participants in 2013, both received high marks from the veterans at ACT and were able to get many laps of experience last season. Both were impressive enough to be invited to the Bond ACT Invitational at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2013.

 

“I think it is great that we are getting so many good young teams into the ACT system”, said (8) eight-time ACT Champion Brian Hoar. “These kids have very good equipment and it is fun to race with them. It is gratifying to know that there is a pool of talented depth keeping ACT Late Model racing healthy in the region,” concluded Hoar.

 

The ACT opening event at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH will take place with a full practice on Saturday, April 12 and a 150-lap feature event on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Qualifying will begin at 1:00 on Sunday.

TRACK FACTS:  Half mile paved oval.  MIS has a long history of racing including notables such as the infamous Alabama Gang.  Opening in 1964, this track also known as “Alabama’s Fastest Half Mile” and continues to draw fans and racers from around the area.   

 

TEAM STANGE ON “Alabama’s Fastest Half Mile”:  This is the third appearance the ARCA Racing Series makes at this historical short track.  The addition of crew chief Rick Crawford to the team this year adds more experience to the foundation this new team is building; this will be the first time Crawford will be calling the shots for Maryeve and Team Stange. 

 

MARYEVE ON RACING AT MIS:  “I’m really happy to start working with Rick (Crawford) at Mobile, it is his home town and local track and I am sure he will have good information for me since it’s my first time racing there. I know the guys have spent a lot of time at the shop working hard to get me the best car for this race.  I just cannot wait to roll the car on track for the first practice at Mobile with our new partner Shooters Restaurant Group. I am so grateful to have amazing partners and proud to be with Team Stange.”

 

MARYEVE FAST FACTS:  Coming off a very commendable run for the series opener at Daytona International Speedway this will be the second race of the season for the team. Heading to MIS with 18 career starts in the ARCA Racing Series Maryeve’s best finish of 10th came at Chicagoland Speedway.  Maryeve also has two career starts in both the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.  

 

MARYEVE’S FUN FACTS:  Maryeve and the No. 46 Shooters Ford Fusion will be part of the pre-race fan fest located at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama on Thursday, March 20 from 4:00-6:00PM.

        Waterbury, VT –American Canadian Tour (ACT) teams look at Lee USA Speedway’s annual New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 to kickstart their race season on Sunday, April 13, 2014. The optimism is well-founded. ACT Late Models can boast 10 different winners in 11 events held at Lee since 2003.

 

The list of winners is impressive, with a huge diversity of experience. Starting the list of winners are two Canadian teams, featuring four-time ACT US and Canadian Champion Patrick Laperle from St. Denis, QC and NASCAR Canadian Champion DJ Kennington, St. Thomas, ON in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

 

Seven-time ACT Champion Jean-Paul Cyr, and three time Thunder Road Champion Cris Michaud, along with the 1995 ACT Pro Stock Champion from Fast One racing, Brad Leighton all went to victory lane at Lee USA Speedway. Pro All Star Series Champion Ben Rowe from Turner, Maine won the NH Governor’s Cup in 2008. Lee regular weekly racer Miles Chipman shocked the ACT regulars in 2010 with a win for long-time car owner David Storey.

 

Perennial front-runner Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. from Hudson, NH was a first-time winner in 2008.  “I remember what a great feeling it was to win that race. I started my ACT career at Lee and to get that win really gave my career a boost. I think Brian (eight (8) time ACT Champion Brian Hoar from Williston, VT) is the only guy who has won the Lee opener twice, and that is definitely my goal this year. If we can start the season like we ended 2013, this could help us get that first ACT Championship this season. I can’t wait for the season to begin,” said Pole.

 

The defending New Hampshire Governor’s Cup winner, Jimmy Hebert, from Williamstown, VT stunned the veterans and the full house a year ago, with his first ever ACT win in just his second year of competition. “It was with a lot of help from my team and Dale Shaw that got me that win, but really with the number of cars and quality of race teams we raced with, it was pretty much a shock to me. I only remember coming around with the checkered flag victory lap and seeing my father jumping up and down on the track. That was pretty special. I hope to repeat this year,” said Hebert.

 

The ACT opening event at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH will take place with a full practice on Saturday, April 12 and a 150-lap feature event on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Qualifying will begin at 1:00 on Sunday.

Better Late For MacDonald At Bristol

Green-White-Checkered Pass Nets NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Win For Mass. Driver

 

BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 15, 2014) –Veteran Eddie MacDonald showed a little late-race mastery Saturday afternoon and brought home the winning trophy from Bristol Motor Speedway.

 

The 33-year-old driver from Rowley, Mass., took the lead on a green-white-checkered finish at the PittLite 125 and held off Gray Gaulding and Ben Rhodes to win the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at "The Last Great Colosseum."

 

It's MacDonald's first win since September of 2009 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway snapping a 53-race winless streak and the seventh of his career.

 

The rookie Rhodes, 17, was looking for his first career win in his 10th start. He won the 21 Means 21 Pole Award in qualifying Thursday and led every lap Saturday up until the final restart. A late wreck set up the extended finish that pushed the race to 132 laps.

 

MacDonald qualified 13th and steadily worked his way to the front on the high-banked half-mile. He took second on Lap 120 and got past Rhodes for the lead heading into Turn 3 on the penultimate lap. Gaulding also got by Rhodes at the finish to take second.

 

Brennan Newberry and Austin Hill rounded out the top five.

 

Patrick Staropoli finished sixth, followed by Dave Garbo Jr., Brandon Jones, Matt Tifft and Michael McGuire.

 

Daniel Suarez, who won the first two races of the season, pitted out of the top 10 late in the race for a flat tire and wound up 26th. His misfortune allowed Gaulding to take the points lead by fourover Suarez and six over Rhodes.

 

The PittLite 125 will air on FOX Sports 1 on Saturday, March 22 at 11:30 a.m. ET. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will return to the track on Saturday, March 22 for the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 at Greenville (S.C.) Pickens Speedway.

WEST HAVEN, VT – Stock car racing fans will have a new group of stars to cheer for at Vermont's Devil's Bowl Speedway, as the "SK Light Modified" division makes its way to the racy half-mile.  The division will make several appearances during the summer to complement the weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series in 2014.

The division features the same style of low-slung, open-wheel cars that compete on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, but with cost-containing differences in engines and tires. Preliminary talks with competitors have been positive, and a schedule of nine events has been planned.  An exhibition event was staged at Devil's Bowl in August 2013, and racers and fans alike were impressed.

Many of the division's expected competitors have raced at the recently closed Canaan Fair Speedway and the recently reopened Twin State Speedway in New Hampshire.  The rulebook – which has options for both sealed "crate" engines and homebuilt engines – will allow racers from other tracks in New Hampshire and Connecticut to try Devil's Bowl.  The full rulebook for the division has been posted on the Devil's Bowl Speedway website atwww.devilsbowlspeedwayvt.com.

"I was approached by several race teams last year about bringing these cars to Devil's Bowl, since they have nowhere else to race in this area," Devil's Bowl promoter Mike Bruno said. "There's a great group of drivers that are willing to push these cars deep into the corners.  It should be pretty exciting."

The Devil's Bowl Speedway season will open on Sunday, May 4 with the annual "Spring Green" event, which also includes the SK Light Modified opener.  Other events for the division will be held on May 16, June 6, June 20, June 27, July 4, July 18, August 15, and during the Vermont 200 Weekend finale on September 13-14.

Three NASCAR Nationwide Series Teams Penalized Following Event

At Las Vegas Motor Speedway

 

Daytona Beach, Fla. (Mar. 12, 2014) — Three NASCAR Nationwide Series teams have been penalized as a result of rules violations committed at the recently completed event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

 

During opening day inspection on March 6, the No. 11 car violated Sections 12-4.3 (P3 penalty) and 20A-2.3A (weight attached in unapproved location) of the 2014 NASCAR rule book. As a result, crew chief Chris Gayle has been fined $10,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. In addition, car chief Todd Brewer has also been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

 

The No. 9 car violated Sections 12-4.2 (P2 penalty) and 20A-12.8.1B (car exceeded minimum front height). This violation was discovered during post-race inspection on March 8 and crew chief Greg Ives has been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

 

The No. 22 car violated Sections 12-4.2 (P2 penalty) and 20A-12.3S (shock absorber exceeded maximum gas pressure). The violation was discovered during post-race inspection on March 8 and crew chief Jeremy Bullins has been fined $5,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

C'est avec une saison complète d'expérience en série NASCAR Canadian Tire qu'Alex Guénette est revenu au New Smyrna Speedway, la semaine dernière. Il a maintenu le rythme des meneurs lors des quatre courses de la minisérie Winter Pro Late Model, obtenant la pole, se battant pour la victoire et terminant finalement deuxième dans la quatrième et dernière course de 100 tours.

Montréal, le 27 février 2014 – Les jeunes pilotes apprennent les techniques de pilotage, la gestion des pneus, les réglages de la voiture et le contrôle de soi chaque fois qu'ils sont en piste. Le pilote de Terrebonne Alex Guénette s'était bien battu en course et avait impressionné lors de sa participation dans cette même série, il y a un an, alors qu'il n'était âgé que de 16 ans. Il était de retour cette année avec la même voiture et la même équipe, mais avec en plus une saison d'expérience en série NASCAR Canadian Tire, où il a terminé en 10e place au championnat et obtenu le titre de Recrue de l'année. Alex avait également fait une très bonne impression en septembre passé à sa première participation en série de camionnettes NASCAR Camping World, où un bris de moteur avait ruiné ses chances de top cinq.

Cette année au New Smyrna Speedway, le pilote a connu un départ plus lent pour la première course, mais une excellente séquence en qualifications et dans les épreuves finale s'en est suivie, avec notamment la pole position au départ de la dernière course de 100 tours. La première course, mercredi dernier, a été plus décevante pour Alex et le reste de son équipe. « Mon chef d'équipe, Mario Gosselin, avait participé à l'épreuve ARCA à Daytona le week-end précédent et nous n'avions pas pu participer aux séances d'essais à New Smyrna les lundi et mardi comme l'ont fait les autres pilotes de tête. Je vais courir à bord de cette même voiture ARCA plus tard cette saison, alors c'était important que Mario participe à la course afin que nous soyons mieux préparés en termes de réglages et de pilotage plus tard cette saison. Cependant, nous étions en mode rattrapage lorsque nous sommes arrivés au New Smyrna Speedway, mercredi », a expliqué le jeune pilote.  

À chaque course, Alex s'est vu améliorer ses temps et dépasser plus de voitures que quiconque lors de la semaine. La météo s'est mise de la partie, annulant les qualifications des deuxième et troisième courses, forçant Alex à prendre le départ en fin de peloton sur une grille basée sur ses points et à dépasser plusieurs voitures. Il a même dû à quelques reprises dépasser plus d'une fois le même pilote, lorsqu'une neutralisation reclassait tout le monde selon le tour précédent avant la relance.

C'est un père fier, Jacques Guénette, qui a vu son fils évoluer en tant que pilote tout au long de la semaine. « Sa communication avec le chef d'équipe s'est améliorée et ils ont pu rendre la voiture plus rapide à chaque sortie lors des pratiques. Alex a aussi développé sa capacité à détecter les situations menaçantes sur la piste et a pu éviter certains accidents devant lui, profitant d'accrochages entre d'autres voitures pour améliorer sa position. Il peut maintenant effectuer unbump-and-run très efficace, qui consiste à entrer très légèrement en contact avec une voiture devant, juste assez pour être en mesure de se glisser à l'intérieur et effectuer le dépassement, sans causer d'accident et ruiner la course d'autres pilotes», a mentionné Jacques Guénette.

 

Alex est aussi conscient qu'il gagne en expérience. «Nous sommes arrivés ici en étant sûrs que nous pouvions rouler à l'avant, même sans avoir pratiqué plus tôt dans la semaine. Piloter cette voiture a été presque facile : Mario (Gosselin, chef d'équipe) a très bien fait les réglages et ses conseils de pilotage ont finalement fait toute une différence en fin de compte. La saison 2013 en NASCAR Canadian Tire m'a permis de mieux lire la course, de toujours conserver une légère marge de sécurité et de rester loin des problèmes en remontant le peloton et en me battant pour la victoire.

 

Alex sera de retour en piste pour des essais sur l'ovale de Martinsville (VA) les 17 et 18 mars, et pour la course de camions NASCAR (NCWTS) les 28 et 29 mars à la même piste.

Champions Looking Forward To PASS Opener At Greenville-Pickens Speedway

CHARLOTTE, NC (February 27) – A star studded field of North America's top short track drivers are just days away from taking to the legendary Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina for race one of the 2014 Pro All Stars Series (PASS) National Championship Series.  The Fox Carolina 150 will double as the first PASS South Super Late Model race of the season and will also feature 50 laps for the PASS Pro Late Models and 75 laps for the Southeast Super Trucks.

The field of drivers pre-entered is stacked with champion drivers including former PASS National and PASS North Champion Ben Rowe, 2013 PASS Pro Late Model Champion Trevor Noles and Super Late Model touring champions Daniel Hemric and Travis Braden.  But, those are not the only drivers racing at Greenville-Pickens Speedway this Saturday night who have achieved championship status.

            Short track veteran Jay Fogleman enters the 2014 racing season at a crossroads.  The Durham, NC driver is coming off one of the best seasons of his 30 year career.  A season that included winning his second straight PASS National Championship, finally winning the elusive PASS South title, and a podium finish in the Oxford 250.  But, despite his success, Fogleman will trim back his schedule substantially, competing in only the PASS National Championship Series events in order to spend more time fostering the budding career of his son, Tate. 

That will wait at least one more week, though, as Fogleman focuses his attention on this weekend's action behind the wheel at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. He won a thrilling PASS South race there in the summer of 2009 with conditions much different than what is expected for the Fox Carolina 150.

            "The racetrack should have more grip this time of year and it should be a different type of race than what we've seen there in the summer," said Fogleman. "It's all about momentum and timing because the track is so flat and so line sensitive, it's a driver's race track.  I'm looking forward to getting through this one and then getting to Dillon and getting on the pit box to help Tate."

            Like Fogleman, Farmington, ME's Cassius Clark also captured an elusive championship in 2014, finally winning the PASS North title in a tight three way battle with Joey Doiron and DJ Shaw.  But, Clark is not new to winning PASS championships or to winning races at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.  Clark won the first ever PASS South race held at the historic speedway in 2007.  A year later, he was able to take home the first PASS National Championship, again at Greenville.  Clark returns this year hoping, that with similar conditions to those of the fall, it will play into his hands once again.

"I think the track is very weather sensitive," said Clark.  "It's a lot like Hickory in that there can be grip early in the year, but later in the year it's a lot slicker.  We went back there a few years ago and tried the top side, we moved up to the middle of the racetrack and found grip.  But the next time we went, there was no grip up top. We probably won't have a good idea of what the track will do until practice on Friday."

            Anthony Anders comes to Saturday night's Fox Carolina 150 as a sort of wildcard.  Over the last five years, Anders has been one of the Palmetto State's most successful drivers.  He won a track championship at Myrtle Beach Speedway in 2012 and followed that up by winning the championship at Greenville-Pickens last year, his first title at his hometrack.  But those championships came behind the wheel of a Late Model Stock car.  The Easley, SC driver has only raced his straight rail chassis sporadically, with a few starts at the now closed Lanier National Speedway and last year on the short track at Daytona International Speedway.  This weekend Anders plans to compete in both the PASS South Super Late Model and PASS Pro Late Model features.  Anders hopes his vast experience at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, along with some help from local PASS South veteran Randy Gentry, will pay off with a victory in the Fox Carolina 150.

"Tire management is definitely going to be key," said Anders.  "Greenville is always tough on tires and hard to get around with its flat turns.  I think we're gonna be at a slight disadvantage to the PASS regulars, but I've won a lot of races at Greenville in Late Model Stocks, including some 150 lappers.  These cars are racier than what I'm used to and I'm looking forward to it.  The PASS cars are just built to race."

Among those pre-entered for the Fox Carolina 150 are two-time PASS South winner in 2013, Tyler Church, third generation racers Jared Irvan and Tate Fogleman, veterans Randy Gentry, Joey Doiron, Jimmy Doyle, Jody Measamer, and John Batten, and rookie contenders Brandon Setzer and Matt Daley.

            Entries are continuing to come in daily for what looks to be one of the biggest Super Late Model races of the Winter.  Entry forms for the Fox Carolina 150 can be found at ProAllStarsSeries.com.

Action gets under way on Friday, February 28th at Greenville-Pickens Speedway with practice for all divisions from 2-6 PM.  On Saturday, March 1st, pit gates will open at 10 AM for the Fox Carolina 150, with practice from Noon- 3 PM. Qualifying will begin at 4 PM and racing will start at 6 PM, featuring 150 laps for the PASS Super Late Models, 50 laps for the PASS Pro Late Models and 75 laps for the Southeast Super Trucks.

The Fox Carolina 150 will also be available on PASS TV for online pay-per-view purchase through ProAllStarsSeries.com.

NAPLES, ME (February 24) – The highly anticipated debut of PASS TV is set for this Saturday afternoon with the first broadcast coming from the historic Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina.  The legendary half-mile speedway will host the first Pro All Stars Series (PASS) events of 2014, including the PASS South Super Late Models and PASS Pro Late Models.  The PASS Super Late Models will be the featured event of the Fox Carolina 150 in a race that will also double as the first PASS National Championship Series event of the year.  In addition to PASS, the Southeast Super Trucks will make their first ever visit Greenville-Pickens Speedway in a 75 lap race that will feature some of the Carolinas top short track veterans.

PASS TV will have live flag-to-flag coverage of all the action from Greenville-Pickens Speedway starting at approximately 3:45 PM Eastern.  Coverage will include qualifying for all three divisions, last chance races if needed, and each main event, including the Fox Carolina 150 for the PASS South Super Late Models.  The Fox Carolina 150 is attracting some of the best short track racers in North America, including former PASS National Series champions Jay Fogleman, Ben Rowe, and Cassius Clark, Super Late Model champions Daniel Hemric and Travis Braden, defending Greenville-Pickens Speedway track champion Anthony Anders, and up and coming stars like Jared Irvan, Tate Fogleman, Joey Doiron, Trevor Noles, and Brandon Setzer.
