DJ Shaw Excited To Start Season At Anderson's Peach Blossom Special

CHARLOTTE, NC (March 13) – After a long off season for many teams, especially those in the Northeast and Canada, the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) National Championship Series is set to kick off Saturday, March 21 with the Peach Blossom Special 125 at Anderson Motor Speedway.  This year's event will mark the first time PASS has raced at the Upstate South Carolina facility since veteran Brandon Ward took the checkered flag there in 2012.

            This will also be the first time the defending PASS AIM Recycling Super Late Model champion, DJ Shaw, has ever raced at Anderson Motor Speedway.  The Center Conway, NH native is a coming off a career year that saw him finally capture that first elusive PASS title, including a series leading three wins along the way.  Although Shaw is new to Anderson Motor Speedway, he is excited about the opportunity to once again race in the South in the Peach Blossom Special.

            "I enjoy coming down South to race like this early in the year," says Shaw, driver of the Precision JLM/Dale Shaw Race Cars/Mulkern Excavating #60.  "For one thing, it gets the season started sooner and that's always a good thing.  We're using this more as a test for a car we built during the offseason that has a lot of new ideas and is kind of experimental."

            Shaw is no stranger to early season success in the South, however.  A late race pass in the Easter Bunny 150 at Hickory Motor Speedway last year propelled him to one of the biggest wins of his career.  A win that ultimately kick started his season and got his team focused on competing for the championship in the PASS AIM Super Late Models presented by Kenny U-Pull.

            "To start off with a good run would be huge to give us confidence in the car and a little bit of a notebook heading into the North season," said Shaw.  "It's one of those things where we need to have a good run or we need to do some work on the car to get it back to more of what we're used to working with before the North season starts."

            Shaw will be joined by several of his Northern counterparts at Anderson Motor Speedway including three-time PASS National Champion, Ben Rowe, who competed in the inaugural event there in 2007 and Quebec's Eric St. Gelais.  Local favorite Randy Gentry will be making his first start of 2015, along with PASS South Super Late Model rookie Lucas Jones.  PASS South championship hopefuls Zane Smith, Jody Measamer, Tate Fogleman, and Jimmy Doyle will also be looking to take home the title of Peach Blossom Special winner.

            Action begins on Friday, March 20 with optional practice starting at 3 PM for the PASS Super Late Model, PASS Pro Late Models, USAC Eastern Midgets, and Legends cars.  OnSaturday, March 21 pit gates open at Anderson Motor Speedway at 10 AM with rotating practice starting at Noon, followed by qualifying at 3:30 PM, and feature racing at 5 PM for the PASS Super Late Models, PASS Pro Late Models, USAC Eastern Midgets, and Legends.  Please go to ProAllStarsSeries.com for entry forms and the complete weekend schedule.

NASCAR Inspection

I believe, NASCAR's effort is going to have a direct and harder impact on the smaller (any left?) teams in the garage area.  Race teams have always stretched the limits and gray zones.  That's what NASCAR is all about.

Now, with NASCAR's new announced inspection process (see below), only the large teams - the ones with the big multi-car, Fortune-100 backed teams, will be able (thanks to ressources) to "try", several times, before making it thru inspections and still get to practice.

But, again I could be wrong....

Officials distributed a memo to teams today informing them of the move, which will be in effect starting with this weekend's Campingworld.com 500 atPhoenix International Raceway (3:30 p.m. ET, Sunday, FOX).


Should a team require more than two trips through inspection, the 15-minute penalty would come during the next scheduled practice. It would not be imposed as part of a qualifying session.

The pre-qualifying inspection process has been a source of concern this year as teams adapted to the 2015 rules package.

Waterbury, VT- American Canadian Tour (ACT) fans attending the annual New Hampshire Governor's Cup 150 opening events at the Lee USA Speedway are generally the real winners at the seacoast oval on opening day. Sunday, April 12 will be no exception. History shows that there are many surprises in opening events at the fast 3/8 mile oval.

 

In the ten years running the NH Governor's Cup, there has only been one repeat winner. Eight-time ACT Champion Brian Hoar of Williston, VT won the title back-to-back in 2011 and 2012. In 2009, Hoar and teammate for the event Mike Olsen (N. Haverhill, NH) looked like runaway favorites until Goodyear tire issues took both teams out of winning contention while running in the first two spots during the first half of the event.

 

In 2011 local racer and first time ACT competitor Fulton Mountain finished the race in third and was never to be seen again at an ACT event!

 

Perhaps the biggest surprise for the ACT teams was in 2010 when the rain-postponed event occurred in June, and local weekly racers Miles Chipman and Jeff Labrecque finished in the first and second place spots respectively.

 

"The 2010 event with Miles Chipman and Jeffrey Labrecque was really an important indicator that the ACT Late Model business model of cost contained rules regarding engines, shocks, and tires was still viable. Throughout the late 90's, and into the first half of the new century, there was not much question that we had great parity in the division. During the first half of the 2000's ACT touring for this division became popular, just as it had been in the 80's and mid-90's with the Pro Stocks (Super Late Models). Unfortunately for ACT Pro Stocks, the costs to teams, promoters, and ultimately fans got out of control, and in 1995 that all ended. We have tried to be diligent in keeping our business model of Late Model racing for both weekly and touring interests cost controlled. But as history has taught us, that always brings the challenge for organizers to make sure builders and some teams don't begin to violate the overall intent of a division, in the interest of their personal competitive edge," said ACT President Tom Curley.

 

One of the most emotional wins at Lee USA came when former Thunder Road International Speedbowl Tiger Sportsman division champion Jimmy Hebert (Williamstown, VT), in only his sophomore year, won his first ACT Tour event at the opening season NH Governor's Cup in 2013. Equally impressive that year was the second-place effort by N. Haverhill, NH's Travis Fadden.

 

In last year's event, it became a pack of champions running to the wire. Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, MA won his first opening day event after many tries, and soon-to-become 2014 ACT Champion Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. (Hudson, NH), along with two-time ACT Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr. from nearby Dover, showed why they are championship caliber. They all finished on the podium. The Canadian fans in attendance were not disappointed when Alex Labbe (Ste. Albert, QC) finished fourth and went on to win the 2014 Série ACT Championship. There was also still the "Lee opening surprise run" when Quebecer Stephane Descoste (Oka, QC) pulled off his best U.S. finish in fifth.

 

Following the recent triple 100's as part of the American Racer Challenge Cup at the New Smyrna Speedway in Florida, most fans who attended the February races saw an outstanding performance from Bradley Babb (Windham, ME) in the Joey Laquerre–owned team ride, while Rowland Robinson, Jr. (Steuben, ME) showed he was in race trim entering the new season. 2014 ACT Rookie of the Year Brandon Atkins (Ausable, NY) figured out the fast half-mile by the end of the week. Both he and Emily Packard (E. Montpelier, VT) look to be ready for breakout sophomore seasons beginning at Lee USA.

 

Quebec teams Alex Labbé, Donald Theetge, Stéphane Descoste, and Jonathan Bouvrette are all expected to enter the Lee opening event, in preparation for the opening event of their 2015 Série ACT campaign – the Spring Green 115 at Airborne Park Speedway on Saturday, May 16.

 

Teams will have a full day of practice at Lee on Saturday, April 11. Post time for Sunday, April 12 is 1:00pm.

Long-time friends and professional partners Eric Kerub (owner of the MIA-Motorsports In Action race team) and Jean-François Dumoulin have been wishing to develop this association for a long time. "We've been working together for several years. I coached Eric in the beginning, and the projects kept developing constantly at the mechanical, adjustment, strategic, Micra Cup car preparation levels, and more. It's really fun!" mentions Jean-François Dumoulin.

 

"I've known JF for several years, his reputation as a driver and instructor is established. A collaborator in multiple professional cases, MIA had wished to become a partner of Dumoulin Competition so that JF could participate in a full season. The cars bought by MIA are those that were driven by Alex Guénette in 2014. Throughout the 2015 season, Dumoulin Competition will also count on the frequent collaboration of King Autosport, notably for the adjustment of the #04 Dodge Bernier Crepeau / Bellemare Group / ACASS cars (Circuits confirmed on page 2).

 

Upcoming partnerships

 

Discussions are underway with potential partners so that Jean-François Dumoulin can participate in the whole championship.  "There are talks going on for both races in Western Canada, among others. The fact that Louis-Philippe is the 2014 champion opens up doors and our objective is to participate in the whole season, we must, however, find the required financing."

Jean-François Dumoulin will take part in Saturday's NCATS Driver Autograph Session, which takes place from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., while Sunday's runs are from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Following Sunday afternoon's autograph session – from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. – the NCATS drivers will take to The Johnsonville Stage for a 30-minute Q&A with the fans. During this session, hosted by Dave Bradley – a member of the broadcast team for the NCATS race broadcasts on TSN – the drivers will discuss their news and plans for 2015 and will take questions from the fans in attendance. Series director Alex Nagy will also participate in the on-stage session.

Des discussions sont actuellement en cours avec des partenaires potentiels pour que Jean-François Dumoulin puisse participer à l'ensemble du championnat. « Il y a des pourparlers, entre autres, pour les deux courses dans l'Ouest Canadien. From humble beginnings, with a handful of annual events at the former Mosport/Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Speedway oval, the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – has become one of the sport's talked about tours.

 

After a highly competitive campaign that saw only 1 repeat winner in 6 of 8 scheduled 2014 main events, OMRS officials have released an agenda for this season that will see the popular series return to Peterborough and Flamboro Speedways for a combined 11 shows in 2015. The first appearance on the schedule is the Modified Spring Shakedown Invitational – Saturday, May 2nd – at Flamboro. Bill Pickford – who along with Rick Warnes and Randy Hollingsworth make-up the series officials – says releasing the calendar now will give drivers and teams the opportunity to get things ready with sponsorship and marketing plans for the new year.

 

"Since our first ever green flag 5 years ago at Mosport, we've always looked to keep things affordable for the racers," said Pickford. "Rick, Randy and I are out there for every race and we know that a little extra financial assistance for things like tires and fuel can make it easier for everyone. We're expecting about a handful of new teams and several first year runners join the fold this year, so we want to help everyone get their ducks in a row."

 

Pickford continued by saying that after some revisions, the proposed schedule is now confirmed. Management teams at both venues were very accommodating with programs that will run from May to October and make dates available for as many different series and divisions as possible.

 

"One date we're thrilled to confirm is the return of the 'Test a Mod Day' Saturday, June 13th – between 10:00 and 2:00 – prior to the year's second event at Peterborough Speedway," said Pickford. "J.P. Josiasse, Dave Sikma and the team were wonderful hosts last year and gave us the opportunity to put some drivers at the controls of an open-wheeled machine for the very first time. The development program we have with Peterborough Speedway opens the door for some new drivers to see what our series is all about and is a win-win situation for everyone." 

 

Fans can learn about this year's OMRS calendar during the Motorama show – Friday, Saturday and Sunday – March 13th to 15th at the International Centre.

Canadian Tire have made changes to their plans in 2015 and into 2016 and those are having a direct impact on Scott Steckly and his future in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. While it was reported in the Globe & Mail a few weeks ago that Canadian Tire would leave the series at the end of 2015, their decision has impacted Steckly immediately as they discontinue their partnership effective this year.

 

"I am really proud to have represented Canadian Tire for the past six years," said Steckly from his Milverton, Ontario race facility.  "We feel we have done a great job for them over the years, while meeting a lot of terrific people and forming lasting relationships along the way. We can do nothing but respect their decision and move on." 

 

Steckly is the only three time NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Champion, with 16 wins, 13 poles, 59 top five and 72 top ten finishes.  He is among the leaders in every category that NASCAR tracks.

 

"We will continue to field the #18 EpiPen entry of Alex Tagliani and possibly another full time ride out of the 22 Racing stable.  However at this moment I may have a limited role behind the wheel of my ride," stated Steckly.  "My cars are all ready to go and we continue to work to find partners but at this point we do not have enough funding to complete the full season," he added. "With Canadian Tires help we are continuing to work with their vendor community to form partnerships for 2015 and beyond."

Waterbury, VT – A joint announcement between the American Canadian Tour (ACT) and the Pro ALL Stars Series (PASS) last November came as great news throughout the short track industry, particularly in the Northeast. Principals Tom Curley (ACT) and Tom Mayberry (PASS) decided that, after a decade of competing against each other in the region, it was time to re-energize the region's full-fendered stock car racing competitors and their fans. They formed a working alliance for the 2015 season.

 

In a stunning program, they announced an aggressive three-track format, which will host double features for both popular touring divisions at the same race events on three separate occasions throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall of 2015. The opening event will be twin 150 lap events for the ACT teams and PASS teams at the Oxford Plains Speedway (OPS) in Oxford, ME on Saturday, April 18. It is expected that a number of teams will pull double duty and compete in both events.

 

The summer event will take place at the ACT International 500 weekend onJuly 18/19 at the Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY. Twin 200 lap events for both the PASS teams and ACT teams will make up a two-day event. All qualifying will be done on Saturday night for Sunday's feature events. There will be purse and prize money of more than $100,000.00 up for grabs. The event will include both the US and Quebec ACT teams and will be both a PASS North and PASS National point-counting event. The weekend will also feature the ACT Pro Cam Truck Series in a point-counting event. The Rev Star asphalt Sprint cars will also be featured on Saturday qualifying night.

 

The final doubleheader of the triple bill program of races will be held at the Autodrome Chaudiere in Vallee-Jct., QC on Saturday, September 12. The racy quarter mile hosts both PASS and ACT events to sellout crowds throughout the season, and the combination event is expected to be the largest event ever held at the facility. Each division will again race 200 laps.

 

 

In addition to the three twin bills, a first-ever PASS event will be held Memorial Day weekend at Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, VT, a track co-owned by Curley. A stand-alone event on Saturday, June 27 at Oxford Plains Speedway for the ACT teams has also been put on the 2015 calendar. The agreement between the parties also calls for a no conflict date on the weekend of August 28-30 for the running of the historic Oxford 250. This will free up the weekend for teams and fans of ACT to attend one of the premier short track races of the year to close out the summer season.

 

"There is just all upside to this deal as far as I can see. Having the two largest and most popular Late Model touring groups working together is great for the race teams, and also for the fans who have supported each group all these years. It should provide better fields of cars, and without a doubt some of the best racing the region has ever seen in these events. I know some teams are planning to compete in both of the twins, and that will add another dimension to the event," said Bruce Bernhardt, owner of 2012 and 2013 ACT Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr.

 

OPS has been part of ACT racing since the early 80's. In fact, the ACT organization became the management team at OPS for several years in the early 90s. Curley said, "I think we had some of our very best races at Oxford Plains for a lot of years with these Late Model cars. In fact, during Bill Ryan's tenure, Oxford became the strongest weekly car count track in the ACT overall regional market. Obviously, we are excited about going back in a few weeks. Actually, I am interested in seeing the rivalry between the ACT teams and PASS teams who run against each other in the Super Late Model events. I am sure there will be some PASS teams getting into our momentum ACT Late Models at the doubleheaders. I think Tom and I should have a sizeable bet on some kind of point deal that has the cross over guys from each league pitted against each other during the double features. It should be a fun time for fans and teams in 2015."

 

The opening of Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday, April 18 will offer full-fendered race fans twin 150-lap events of action and a new beginning. Post time is 2:00pm. There has been tremendous support from fans and teams for this cooperative effort, and a full field of cars and stars from both leagues should not disappoint.

Tyler Church Bets The House To Take PASS South Opener At Dillon

DILLON, SC (March 7) – Defending Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South Super Late Model Champion Tyler Church took the lead from Jody Measamer with 23 laps to go and withstood a late-race restart to win the 10th Annual South Carolina Clash 125 Saturday night at Dillon Motor Speedway.  Earlier in the day, Church revealed that anything less than a win could prove to be a premature ending to the 2015 season for the family financed team.

"That was a wild race, that was tough," said an emotional Church in victory lane.  "We borrowed money against the house just so we could be here to race…and I'm going racing again.  On that last restart I didn't want to let up until I got back up front and, dadgum, we've come this far and I was going to win this race."

            In qualifying, last year's championship runner-up, Cole Timm, captured his first career PASS South quick qualifying time with a lap of 90.766 miles per hour around the egg-shaped, 4/10 mile speedway.  After the top 10 qualifiers redraw, Tate Fogleman and Roger Lee Newton moved up to the front row, while Timm would slot back in the fourth starting position.

            On a relatively mild late Winter afternoon, Fogleman quickly jumped in the lead position, a spot he would not soon relinquish.  While Fogleman paced the field, drivers were implementing varying strategies.  Jody Measmaer and Jimmy Doyle made their way up to second and third respectively, while drivers like Zane Smith and Matt Craig dropped out of the top ten in an effort to conserve their tires.

            Fogleman dominated the first half of the event in one of his strongest PASS South Super Late Model performances thus far, but was overtaken by Measamer for the lead with 41 laps to go.  Doyle's strong run ended 10 laps later when he pushed up into the wall exiting turn four while battling Joey Doiron for the fifth position.

            All the while, Church was closing in on the leaders, first moving by Fogleman to take second, and then bypassing Measamer for the lead on lap 102.  The first caution of the race would not wave until there were 18 laps to go when the machine of Kevin Floars spun exiting turn two.

            Church would continue to lead when the race resumed, but the most heated battle on the speedway was for third between Fogleman and Timm.  The two young drivers went back and forth for the position over several laps, making contact in turn two and then again on the back straight away.  As Fogleman retook third, the two cars made contact sending Fogleman hard into the inside wall on the front stretch with nine laps to go.

            Church and Measamer led the field back to green on the restart, with Trevor Noles making an aggressive three wide move for the lead entering turn one.  Church powered into the lead from the middle groove, while Noles moved to second and Measamer slipped back through traffic.

            Church led the rest of the way to take his first win since last May at Ace Speedway over Noles, Zane Smith, Doiron, and Measamer. Rounding out the top ten were Craig, Ryan Hall, Timm, Hal Goodson, and Newton.

            Kodie Conner proved to be the picture of perseverance, bouncing back from two blown motors over the weekend, taking the lead from Chandler Smith with nine laps to go for his sixth career PASS Pro Late Model win.

            "We lost a motor yesterday in practice after only 8 laps and went back home and stayed up until 4 AM putting another motor in," said Conner after his first Dillon victory.  "We just got an hour and a half of sleep and I've got to thank my dad and all our guys for staying up all night and working on this Tiger 45."

            The only incident of the race occurred on lap 41 when the second and third place machines of Zachary Dabbs and Austin Thompson made contact exiting turn two and both spun.

            Following Conner and Smith to the checkered flag were Wesley Noles, Ryan Krachun, and Logan Jones.

            Chase Purdy prevailed in a hearty race long battle for the lead to take the Legends car win over Ryan Millington, Devin O'Connell, Dillon Spain, and Will Bristle.

            Sean Gartner came home with the win in the Challenger division.
