WEST HAVEN, Vt. – The battle for the Devil's Bowl Speedway Asphalt Track championship took on a major plot twist on Saturday, August 27.  Double feature races in all four weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions at the annual Sugar & Spice Restaurant "Double Stack Night" saw seven different winners in eight events, with Jason Durgan and Vince Quenneville Jr. highlighting the show.

Morrisonville, N.Y., racer Durgan struck first in the opening 25-lap race for the Bond Auto Parts Sportsman Modified division, driving to his fourth victory of the year in a runaway.  Quenneville fought through traffic and then held off Jackie Brown Jr. for the runner-up spot.  Billy Lussier and Travis Bruno completed the top five.  Ron Proctor finished sixth after rebounding from a scrape with Jimmy Ryan in the early laps.  Bob Kilburn, Alex Bell, Joey Roberts, and rookie Chuck Bradford rounded out the top 10.

In the second race, a 30-lapper, Brandon, Vt., veteran Quenneville escaped from a bounce into the frontstretch wall as cars scrambled in the early laps, and was able to cruise to his third win of the year.  Durgan made a strong charge but hit the inside wall with 11 laps remaining and was forced to pit during the caution period to change a flat tire.  Proctor tied his season-best result in second place with Ryan third, followed by Lussier and Brown.  Roberts, Durgan, Bruno, Bell, and Chad White finished in positions 6-10.

The misfortune for Durgan created an interesting shift in the championship points with just two weeks remaining.  After Durgan led the standings for 11-straight races, defending track champion Quenneville is now back on top, with an unofficial advantage of just seven points on Durgan (685-678).

Robert Bryant Jr. and Steve Miller were the stars of the Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Model division's twin 25-lap features, each registering a win and a second-place finish.  Bryant, of Brooklyn, Conn., won the opening for after a good battle with Miller, taking his third win of the season.  Miller, Seth Bridge, Josh Masterson, and Dallas Trombley completed the top five.

Vergennes, Vt., racer Miller was a popular winner in the nightcap, scoring his first victory at Devil's Bowl Speedway and his first win in a full-size stock car in 23 years; his last checkered flag was on July 15, 1993 at Thunder Road in Barre, Vt.  Bryant and Masterson ran side-by-side for most of the race, with Bryant getting the runner-up spot ahead of Masterson, Bridge, and Trombley.

Unofficially, Masterson holds a nine-point edge on Bryant for the championship lead (596-587) with two races left on the schedule.

Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegade division title contenders Scott FitzGerald and Jim McKiernan split victories in a pair of 15-lap races, keeping their point battle close as well.  West Rutland, Vt., racer FitzGerald dominated the opener, and was followed across the finish line by R.J. Germain, Matt Monaghan, Jim McKiernan, and Austin McKiernan.

In the second race, Jim McKiernan, from Moriah Center, N.Y., knocked the monkey off his back with his first win in two months.  FitzGerald was second ahead of Monaghan, Austin McKiernan, and Germain.  FitzGerald holds just five points on Jim McKiernan for the title battle (654-649).

Eric Messier of Hinesburg, Vt., proved to be the only repeat winner of the night, sweeping both 15-lap features for the Portland Glass Mini Stock division.  Messier led the way for the four-car, all-rookie Manpower Services team which dominated the podium in both races.  Team leader Brett Wood finished second in both races, while Zach Wood finished third in the first race and Kaleb Shepard was a career-best third in the finale.

Brad Bertrand finished fourth in both races, while brothers Andrew FitzGerald and Roo Forrest each registered a fifth-place result.  Messier has now opened up a 30-point lead on Bertrand in the standings (664-634).

All results are currently unofficial pending technical inspection and review.  Any forthcoming penalties will be announced soon.

The fifth annual "Great North American Pancake Eating Championship" presented by Sugar & Spice was held at intermission, as 25 hungry participants devoured fresh flapjacks and pure Vermont maple syrup in a five-minute contest.  Malcolm Woodward and Allen Jones – who have combined to win every contest since 2012 – deadlocked in the first-ever tie at nine pancakes each, but Woodward, from Mooers Forks, N.Y., won a maple syrup "chug-off" to take his fourth consecutive victory.  Timothy Whitney Jr. ate five pancakes to win in the kids division.

Devil's Bowl Speedway returns to action on Sunday, August 28 on the 3/10-mile Dirt Track with the "Ol' Reliable" Charlie LaDuc Memorial 54-lap race for the Sportsman Modifieds, along with Renegades and Mini Stocks.  Special general admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors (62+), $5 for teens (13-17), and free for kids 12 and under.  Gates open at 4:00 p.m., with racing at 6:00 p.m.

CONCORD, Caroline du Nord, 27 août 2016- Raphaël Lessard, 15 ans, vient de signer sa deuxième victoire de la saison au Concord Speedway en Caroline du Nord dans la série CARS Tour Super Late Model et maintient son emprise sur la première place du championnat. Avec la qualification annulée en raison de la pluie, les pilotes ont pris le départ de la course selon leur position au championnat. Le jeune de Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce s'élançait donc de la pole position, laquelle il a gardée durant presque toute la course.

 

Dès le départ, Raphaël s'est imposé sur Quin Houff, en deuxième position, avec qui il s'est battu pendant quelques tours. Toujours au volant de sa Toyota Camry #99 FRL Express/Team Coach Imaging/Toyota/JBLAudio préparée par l'équipe David Gilliland Racing, Raphaël Lessard a, encore une fois, mené une course parfaite, se sauvant rapidement du peloton de 14 voitures et creusant une avance de presque 4 secondes sur Houff.

 

« C'était ma première course sur le Concord Speedway et la piste est faite d'une manière très particulière. C'était également ma première fois que je partais en pole position côté à côte avec un autre pilote. Au départ j'ai tenté une manœuvre que je pensais allait fonctionner, mais finalement j'ai touché le mur assez fort et j'ai eu peur d'avoir une crevaison, mais la voiture est restée bonne et compétitive malgré l'impact. Le drapeau jaune au 25e tour m'a un peu dérangé puisqu'on avait une bonne avance, mais j'avais une excellente voiture préparée par l'équipe David Gilliland Racing et mon ingénieur en chef Seth Smith. Malgré tout, la relance s'est bien déroulée. Cette victoire est pour mon père, car c'est sa fête demain et il a tellement fait pour moi, pour ma carrière, depuis que je suis petit alors je lui dois bien cela! » de dire Lessard.

 

Présentement Raphaël s'assoit en haut du classement avec une avance confortable : « J'essaye de ne pas penser aux points au championnat, je me dis que je fais de mon mieux lors des courses, et plus je termine bien, plus j'amasse de points. J'aimerais remercier ma famille, mon équipe, FRL Express, Team Coach Imaging, Toyota, JBL Audio et tous ceux qui me suivent! »

 

Alors qu'il ne reste plus que trois épreuves à la saison, Raphaël creuse son avance au championnat des pilotes. Il est également difficile d'ignorer les commentateurs de la course qui, depuis le début de la saison, ne font que s'étonner du talent du jeune Canadien. Ceux-ci lui prédisent d'ailleurs un avenir assuré dans le sport automobile.

 

La prochaine course de Raphaël Lessard dans la série CARS Tour Super Late Model Series sera samedi prochain le 3 septembre au Southern National Motorsports Park à Lucama en Caroline du Nord.

PLATTSBURGH- Bucko Branham needed a strong night to stay in contention for the Nascar Whelen All American Series point championship and he did just that on Saturday night.
            In the first of two twin 25 lap features for the Ernie's Discount Tools Sportsman Modifieds, Bucko Branham drove underneath Codie Aubin and checked out in route to his third win of 2016. Aubin was able to hang on for the second spot. Apparent third place finisher, Jake Branham, failed post race technical inspection for a rear end infraction. Danny Sullivan was placed third. Nick Heywood and Roger Labreche completed the unofficial top five.
            Heywood collected his eighth win of the season in the second twin 25 lap feature. Heywood used a couple restarts to pick his spots and set himself up for the win. Apparent second place finisher, Mike Wells, failed post race technical inspection for unapproved fuel. Branham was placed in second. Chris Cayea, Rico Hernandez and Aubin completed the unofficial top five.
            The Jeffords Steel Renegade division competed in a regular distance event. Jason McClatchie turned last weekend's back luck into some good luck to pick up his first win of the year. McClatchie and Dylan Rabtoy squared off in a lap 22 restart but Rabtoy couldn't hang with McClatchie. Rabtoy, Shawn Duquette, Tylor Terry and Robert Gordon completed the unofficial top five.
            The Busch Beer Mini Mods ran two 10 lap segments. The first segment had a top three finishing order of Josh LaPorte, Dale O'Neil and Tyler Irwin. The field was then inverted for the second segment. O'Neil, LaPorte and Irwin crossed as the top three in segment two. The overall finish gave O'Neil his eleventh win of the year, LaPorte, Irwin, LaFountain and Tyler Bresette completed the unofficial top five.

Oxford, ME – Colchester, VT's Scott Payea emerged as the victor in a heavyweight thriller at Maine's Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday, August 27, beating out Eddie MacDonald, Dillon Moltz, and Brad Babb for his third American-Canadian Tour (ACT) win of the season in the Dave's Small Engines/Ferris Mowers 100.

 

Payea, Babb, and MacDonald had engaged in a three-way battle for more than half the race, with Payea and Babb swapping the lead numerous times while MacDonald lurked in the wings. Payea finally gained the edge for good shortly after a lap-79 caution for Emily Packard's spin, sweeping around the outside of Babb for the event's 13th lead change. The title contender then held on through two more restarts for his eighth career ACT Late Model Tour victory and first at Oxford.

 

Hinesburg, VT's Bobby Therrien, the winner at Oxford in the ACT season opener, led the first five laps from the pole before Rich Dubeau got around him following a hard duel to lead his first laps ever in ACT competition. Babb followed Dubeau up the outside line, then swung to the outside himself to nab the point on lap 18.

 

Payea and MacDonald worked their way to second and third shortly thereafter, and following a lap-29 caution for an incident between Walter J. Hammond and Mark Jension, the three began their battle royale. Babb and Payea, constantly swapped lanes and the lead, with MacDonald sticking his nose into second multiple times in his own attempt to get the top spot. At one point, Babb and Payea rode through turns three and four sideways as they went three-wide around lapped traffic, with neither willing to give an inch. Meanwhile, Moltz steadily moved up from his 19th starting position, and looked to be one caution away from joining the fray.

 

The two traded the lead three more times on successive laps following the lap-79 restart before Payea finally gained control. MacDonald followed him into second and made bids for the lead following cautions on laps 88 and 90, but it was Payea who would ultimately wear the championship belt.

 

MacDonald settled for second, while Moltz  swiped third in the closing laps. Babb faded to fourth, followed by ACT point leader Nick Sweet in fifth. Unofficially, Sweet's lead over Payea will shrink to just two points, with MacDonald 16 points back in third.

 

Rookie Ryan Olsen earned a career-best sixth-place finish, while Rowland Robinson, Jr. roared back from an early pit stop to take seventh. Packard recovered from her misfortune to finish eighth. Scptt Dragon and Dubeau completed the top-10.

 

The ACT Late Model Tour concludes its Maine swing with a return trip to Scarborough's Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18 for New England 500 Weekend. Qualifying will be held on Saturday, with the Fall Foliage 200 on Sunday marking the next-to-last event of the 2016 season. The Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models and Valenti Modified Racing Series will also be in action. Post time is 12:00pm both days.

C'est ce vendredi 26 août qu'avait lieu le 8e programme de la saison à l'Autodrome Chaudière Vallée-Jonction; un programme commandité F. Charest.

Si la classe Amateur Oricom Internet a débuté la saison avec un nombre moindre de voitures qu'elle nous avait habitué la saison dernière, c'est un nombre record de voitures que nous avons vu en piste soit 17. Un travail acharné des pilotes qui désirait attirer d'autres pilotes dans leur classe en particulier les deux représentants des pilotes soit Philippe Verret et Ken Grondin.

C'est le #27 Mickaël Giroux de Saint-Alfred qui a remporté la séance de qualification suivi du #700 William Grondin et du #59 Marc-André Lesage. Si en début de saison, le #08 Dave St-Hilaire semblait dominer la classe, depuis quelques semaines, on remarque la venue de nouveaux meneurs. Le #59 Marc-André Lesage défend toujours bien sa position au classement sans compter le #700 William Grondin, le #09 Philippe Verret ainsi que le #27 Mickael Giroux. Il  ne faudrait pas oublier le #21 Jean-Philippe Poulin qui a remporté pour un 3e programme consécutif la finale de 25 tours. Commandité par Gestion Roy Electrique et Moto Sport a sans aucun doute pris rapidement son aisance en piste au point de devenir dominant dans la classe.

En classe Sport Compact Élite Oricom Internet, 19 pilotes étaient présents. Après l'incident qui l'avait sortie de piste au dernier programme dès le premier tour, le #17 Maxime Gagné commandité par Les Grues R Gagné et Bernier Imprimeur. La deuxième séance de qualification a été remporté par le #4 Jimmy Gagné commandité par Pièces d'Autos Fernand Bégin et HSL Bégin. En finale, le #75 Steve Godbout de Québec à bord de sa voiture aux couleurs de Létourno Service de Pneus. Pour une 2e semaine consécutive, le #110 Olivier Labbé Pelletier de Pintendre termine sur le podium avec sa 2e position. C'est le #72 Louis-Philippe Lauzier de Saint-Pâcome qui complète le podium. Commandité par Garage Richard et Guy Chamberland et Motel Resto-Bar L'Escale, Lauzier fait tout en son pouvoir pour conserver sa 2e place au classement général.

Les pilotes de la classe Semi Pro Garage Gilles Roy ont participé à deux séances de qualification avec inversion des positions la 1ere séance a été remportée par le #01 Jonathan Bergeron commandité Garage HSL Bégin et Garage Gilles Roy. Quant à la 2e séance de qualification, le #71 James Vachon commandité par Garage 10-10. En finale, on a pu assister à une superbe performance du #83 Vincent Vachon commandité par Frameco et Auto Moto Canada. C'est le #11 Johny Vachon de Saint-Joseph de Beauce qui termine au 2e rang suivi du #48 Yves Perreault commandité par Piscine Ste-Marie. Assurément des résultats qui viendront changer le classement au championnat.

Duel for the cash Praxair

Commandité par Praxair par le biais de son représentant Martin Caron, les spectateurs présents ont pu assister à un duel entre les 10 pilotes de la Série Sportsman Qc. Le #89 Marc Bertrand et le #18 Marc Bégin se sont disputés la première position et c'est finalement le #18 Marc Bégin qui est sortie vainqueur.

Des pilotes plus disciplinés

Pour 2e programme consécutif à l'Autodrome Chaudière, 20 pilotes de la Série Sportsman Qc se sont présentés. Le #8 Yves Pelchat a remporté la 1ere séance de pratique tandis que les deux autres ont été remporté le #33 Philippe Poulin et le #89 Marc Bertrand. Devant ses fans toujours très nombreux à Vallée-Jonction, le #33 Philippe Poulin de St-Prosper a remporté la victoire s'assurant ainsi de sa première position au classement régional et provincial. En 2e position, le #89 Marc Bertrand a remporté son premier podium de la saison; une journée parfaite pour le vétéran en plus de sa victoire en qualification. C'est le #40 Sylvain Labbé de Saint-Joseph de Beauce complète ce podium.

En Mini Sportsman, le #77 Cédrick Grenier a remporté la victoire, suivi du # 37 William Gariepy et du #81 Jérémy Bergeron.

Prochain programme le vendredi 9 septembre alors que la Série Sportsman Qc sera de retour en piste mais cette fois pour un 100 tours accompagné de nos 3 classes régionales.

-Autodrome Granby. Ce vendredi 26 août, 25 pilotes Sprint étaient au rendez-vous. Chez les Modifiés, François Bernier #1* remporte sa première course Modifié régionale DIRT. Chez les Sportsman, Alex Lajoie #33 remporte sa première finale à vie à l'Autodrome Granby tandis que pour le prostock Bruno Cyr, c'est sa première victoire de la saison.

  

Modifié Metalia 50 tours   

Les frères Bernier, François #1* et Steve #25* s'assurent une belle place dans le championnat qui se termine la semaine prochaine en terminant premier et troisième. François part 6ème, mais dès le premier tour, se fait 5ème. Steve part 7ème et rejoint son frère au deuxième en faisant l'intérieur de Yan Bussière #21. Les frères s'échangent la position, puis luttent avec Claude Brouillard #3 et Bussière. À la relance du 12ème tour, François les sème pour être 3ème alors que Steve continue de se battre pour le top 5. Kayle Robidoux #46 parti 3ème est deuxième jusqu'à ce jaune qui voit débarquer le leader des 12 premiers tours David Hébert #ONE éprouvant des problèmes de moteur apparemment. Simon Perreault #47 parti premier est 3ème depuis le début et gagne aussi une place au départ d'Hébert. À la relance du 15ème tour François se jette devant Perreault. Le 1* de François reste deuxième jusqu'au 44ème tour où il fait l'intérieur de Robidoux pour la pôle. Steve #25* parvient 3ème au 19ème tour en traçant l'intérieur de Claude Brouillard #3. Enfin, Mathieu Boisvert #73 part 14ème. Il ne perd pas de temps et se rend au top 10 dans les 3 premiers tours. Mathieu entre au top 5 au 28ème tour après avoir dépassé Bussière et Brouillard. Après un combat de 22 tours avec Perreault, Boisvert fils le dépasse dans le dernier tournant par l'intérieur.

Sportsman Metalia 30 tours    

Alex Lajoie #33 part 3ème, mais se propulse tout de suite premier et mènera la course entière. Martin Pelletier #92 part 9ème. Au 4ème tour, Pelletier fait l'intérieur d'Étienne Cournoyer #18 pour la 5ème place. À la relance du tour 10, Martin #92 se lance 3ème. Dany Gagné #90 (parti 7ème) est 2ème depuis le 8ème tour quand Pelletier le contourne au 16ème tour. Ils s'échangeront de nouveau la position 2 au 21ème tour, mais au 23ème tour, Pelletier se fera définitivement 2ème. Martin Hébert #43 et son équipe montrent une détermination qu'aucune malchance ne freine. Pendant la séance de pratique, un bris de direction survient et le 43 est lourdement accidenté. Hébert embarque dans le 16 que son propriétaire conduit, Junior Labelle pour la finale où il part 5ème après avoir gagné sa qualification avec cette voiture. Puis comble de malheur, une motte de terre frappe l'interrupteur principal (main switch) et éteint son moteur dans le premier tour. Il doit donc repartir de la queue. On le voit rejoindre le top 5 au 21ème tour derrière Félix Murray #95. Murray parti 12ème joint les 5 premiers dès le 3ème tour. Le tour suivant, Félix est 4ème. Pelletier le dépasse au 9ème tour par l'extérieur. Au 11ème tour, Murray fait l'intérieur du 01 d'Adam pour récupérer sa 4ème que le 16 piloté par Hébert lui prendra par le bas à trois tours de la fin.

Prostock 25 tours    

André Cossette #18 mène les tours initiaux jusqu'au tour 11 où Bruno Cyr #33 le dépasse par l'intérieur. Guy Viens #15 parvient 3ème derrière eux en faisant l'extérieur d'Alain Brochu #12 au tour 13. Jocelyn Roy #48 fait l'extérieur du 88 de Jeffrey Lapalme au 12ème tour pour la 5ème place. Deux tours plus tard, Roy dépasse Brochu pour la 4ème place. Au 19ème tour, Viens #15 fait le bat de Cossette avec à sa suite le 48 qui fait le même tour à Cossette. Viens et Roy se retrouvent 2ème et 3ème derrière Cyr qui mène toujours et ce jusqu'à la fin. Le 115 de Stéphane Lemire parti 10ème fait l'extérieur de Brochu #12 au 16ème tour pour accéder au top 5. Au tour 22, Lemire fait l'intérieur d' André #18 pour la 4ème place.

Empire Super Sprints 25 tours   

Parker Evans #61 parti premier mène 3 tours que Dale Gosselin parti 2ème le dépasse. Gosselin reste premier jusqu'à la fin malgré la relance du 24ème tour où Parker le charge sans succès. Jason Barney #87 parti 3ème y reste jusqu'au tour 11 où le 123 de Yan Bilodeau parti 4ème le dépasse. Barney revient à sa place au 17ème tour par l'intérieur. Au tour suivant Bilodeau remet les roues devant toujours pour la 3ème place. À 4 tours de la fin Barney revient 3ème. Le tour d'après Bilodeau le repasse. À la relance du dernier tour, le 87 se jette sur la 3ème place du podium par l'intérieur et Bilodeau repart avec cette même position qu'en juin, une fort honorable 4ème position. Alex Vigneault #55 part 5ème, mais est devancé par deux pilotes au premier tour. Vigneault fait d'abord l'extérieur de Michael Parent #25P pour reprendre une position perdue. Le 55 suit Bilodeau qui s'est fait aussi dépassé sur le départ par l'expérimenté Chuck Hebing #45. Bilodeau #123 fait Hebing au tour 6 alors que Vigneault #55 le dépasse par l'extérieur au tour 12. Nos jeunes québécois sont alors 3ème et 4ème. Barney les dépassera pour poursuivre son règne dans le classemen de la série où il est premier.

SPEEDWAY 51 ANNOUNCES MAJOR CHANGES

FOR THE SIGN DEPOT TIGER DIVISION

 

            A significant change is coming to the Speedway 51; Sign Depot Tiger division on Saturday, September 3rd, a change that Track owner, Joey Laquerre feels will make this division much more appealing to drivers throughout the Northeast. It is no secret that the Tiger class has been struggling at Speedway 51, Thunder Road and WMMP. White Mountain made a bold change by combining the Tigers and the Strictly Stocks, and now have a solid twenty cars or more on a regular basis. The Speedway 51 mentor has come up with a plan to make his Tigers hopefully grow in numbers as well, and the idea seems to be well liked by all those whom have been informed about the big change.

 

            "The cost of racing a Tiger has become extremely expensive in these last few years, stated Laquerre. This problem has sidelined so many teams. Our plan will cut the cost of racing one of these cars dramatically. Starting on Saturday, September 3rd, the Tigers will be racing on used American Racer Late Model tires. The best thing about this idea is that drivers will be able to get these used tires absolutely free!  We will have used take-offs in stock, and teams can also get them from any source they want, including any ACT Tour, Thunder Road team, or from racers at other tracks that use the same brand and compounds. Several teams tested these tires last weekend and were ecstatic about the speed and stability of these tires. Several teams were running laps close to fourteen seconds, and with chassis adjustments, we are expecting times from the low 14's to mid to high 13's, and this is getting the drivers excited. More the speed and better the handling makes racing a lot more fun!"

 

            Some of the other positives include the fact that teams can use the same rims that they now are using, and the division will be policed by other Tiger drivers, as each week, five drivers will be appointed Tiger tire inspectors. They will be checking for tread depth, and softness, and if there is any question on the tires, the whole group of five must make a unanimous decision. A maximum tread depth of 4.5 will be strictly enforced. A durometer reading allowance will be announced in the very near future. There will be a branding fee for each tire, and all monies from the branding will go directly to the Tiger point fund. There is no limit to the amount of tires you brand, and the tires will not be impounded weekly.

 

            "We are committed to make this division stronger and hopefully this is a step in the right direction. I am really excited about this plan, and hopefully we can turn this division around. It is an extremely competitive class as it sits now, but I think we are headed into a new era for this type of car. It will be similar to a Late Model but much less expensive, but it also will be a new challenge for the drivers to be on racing slicks, stated Jeff Laquerre, and most drivers like to be challenged. I think this is really going to bring a ton of interest to the division."

 

            Speedway 51 is closed this weekend due to the Oxford 250 and September 3rd is the date for the return of the North Country Ford Late Model division which had been idle for a couple of weeks. It will be Kids Night and will feature racecar rides for the youngsters. The Late Models will be joined by the all new Sign Depot Tigers, Schweppes Street Stocks, the AB Excavating Daredevils, and the White Mountain Community College Pure Stocks. Post time is 6:30pm.
