WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Two former track champions prevailed on a wild night of "topless" racing at Devil's Bowl Speedway on Saturday, June 17.  With the roofs taken off the O'Reilly Auto Parts Sportsman Modified cars for a different look and feel, Jason Durgan and Ron Proctor split a pair of 20-lap feature races in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition.  Other winners during the night included Brett Wood, Brad Bertrand, Connor Watrous, Rick MacDowell, and Brian Preman.

Defending champion Durgan, of Morrisonville, N.Y., posted his first win of the season in the opening round.  After a rough start to the season, Durgan benefitted with an up-front starting position in the handicap.  Rookie Chad White led the first two circuits from the pole position before Durgan took over and never looked back.  Jackie Brown Jr. was the biggest mover, quickly getting from sixth to take second spot away from White on lap 6.  White held on to third place for his best finish in an open-wheel Sportsman Modified.  Billy Lussier and Vince Quenneville Jr. were next in the finish order.

The nightcap was a wild race and left several cars with damage.  Charlton, N.Y., racer and two-time track champion Proctor ran away from the field from the opening lap, but behind him the action was intense.  Several incidents of high-speed contact kept things tense until a three-car wreck in Turn 4 destroyed the cars of White and Lussier.  When the smoke cleared, Proctor had collected his third win of the season, and Brown marched forward to take second again.  Quenneville was third ahead of Joey Roberts and Durgan.

Brett Wood of Georgia, Vt., scored a career-first win in the 20-lap feature for the Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Super Stock division.  Wood came from fourth at the start to take the lead from Garrett Given at the halfway point of the race, then outlasted pressure from defending champion Jim McKiernan and opening night winner Dylan Rabtoy on two late restarts.

Wood's victory made him the fourth different Super Stock winner in as many races in 2017 and the second-straight rookie to win.  McKiernan and Rabtoy battled to the very end for second place, with McKiernan getting the spot.  Rabtoy settled for third place, followed by R.J. Germain and Shawn Duquette.

Portland Glass Mini Stock driver Brad Bertrand of Ferrisburgh, Vt., became the first racer in any division to win four consecutive races to open the season since the present-day 1/2-mile Asphalt Track was built in 2010.  Bertrand had to work harder this time in the 15-lap feature, but took the lead from double-duty racer Given after halfway and cruised to the win.  Given finished a strong second, and rookie Shawn Moquin nipped Andrew FitzGerald and the finish line for third place.  Another rookie, Cam Gadue, finished fifth.

Thirteen year-old Connor Watrous of Bomoseen, Vt., made it two-for-two in the new Bandit Youth Mini Stock division for drivers age 10-15.  Watrous took the lead on a restart halfway through the 8-lap race and ran away for the win.  Tanner Lunt finished second, with newcomer Nick Austin-Neil third in his first race.  Early leader Evan Roberts was fourth and Harley Rogers rounded out the field in her first start.

The New England Antique Racers club brought two divisions of classic racecars to Devil's Bowl for its annual visit.  Rick MacDowell of Sheffield, Mass., won the 12-lap Modified race over Gregg Massini and Angie Bullock, while Brian Preman of East Montpelier, Vt., topped the Sportsman division's 12-lapper over John Adams and Bob Seward.

Devil's Bowl Speedway is in action on its 3/10-mile Dirt Track on Sunday, June 18 at 6:00 p.m., with another "topless" event for Sportsman Modifieds, along with Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, and the new Catamount Mini Sprint club.  General admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for teenagers, and free for kids age 12 and under.  Grandstand gates open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 6:00 p.m.  Kids Bicycle Races will be held at intermission.

NORTH WOODSTOCK, NH – Scott Payea of Colchester, Vt. took the lead from Dillon Moltz on a lap 72 restart and notched his third consecutive American Canadian Tour (ACT) victory in the White Mountain 150 Saturday at White Mountain Motorsports Park.

 

Moltz started on the pole, led the first 71 laps and then drew even to Payea's outside on lap 78, but never managed to regain the top spot. With six laps remaining, Payea finally managed to give Moltz the slip. His winning margin was four car-lengths.

 

Josh Masterson, who had kept contact with the leaders while dicing with local favorite Quinny Welch for over 50 laps, finished third. Welch was fourth, followed by Corey Mason and Jimmy Hebert.

 

Payea stayed strongest the longest in the Harrison Redi-Mix No. 37. After gaining the lead from the outside of the front row on the lap 72 restart, he was able to protect it from the bottom on the fourth and final restart on lap 97 and smoothly work lapped traffic from anywhere on the track.

 

It was the 11th victory of Payea's ACT career.

 

"The car never fell off," Payea said. "I can't thank the RPM team enough. The outside was the place to be, but fortunately, I could make the inside work. He (Moltz) stalked me. I had a mirror full most of the time."

 

Moltz expressed disappointed with the outcome. "We came back with the same setup we won with here last year and we got a little too tight," he said. "It was a heck of a ride though."

 

Mike Ziter had a strong showing go for naught when electrical problems forced him to the pits while running in fourth on lap 126.

 

Ziter, Masterson and Welch had an entertaining back and forth for much of the way.

 

"I apologize for using Quinny up some there," Masterson said. "I used the car up a little early, but this was a good change for us. It's been a struggle."

 

Mason earned his top-5 finish after starting 13th. "The lapped cars ran us hard," he said. "They didn't want to give up."

 

Positions 7-10 went to Rowland Robinson Jr., Jesse Switzer, Scott Dragon and Stacy Cahoon.

 

The next American Canadian Tour event is at Seekonk Speedway (Mass.) Saturday, July 15.

OMRS Gets Ready for its 3rdPeterborough Speedway Start of 2017

There has always been something special about a first-time main event winner and on this year's Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – tour, the first 3 main events have been taken by drivers making their inaugural visit to victory lane. Duane Cinnamon won the season opener at Sunset Speedway, with Brad Stevenson grabbing the opening round at Peterborough and Mark Gordon scoring the victory Saturday, June 10that Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.

 

"It seems like our talent pool gets deeper at every event," said Bill Pickford, who along with Rick Warnes and Randy Hollingsworth makes up the team of OMRS officials. "We have new drivers joining the fold and our existing roster has stepped-up their game to create a very strong field whenever we take the green flag."

 

Pickford pointed to the recent 'Test-a-Mod' day at Peterborough Speedway as a source for some of the tour's new teams. Drivers from a variety of different divisions – including the karting ranks and the track's 4Fun field – took a turn behind the wheel of one of the powerful open-wheeled rides and caught the fever of what it would like to run regularly with the series.

 

The Ontario Modifieds Racing Series will be part of the annual Autism Awareness Night – Saturday, June 24th – at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City. Pit gates will open at 3:00, with the general admission grandstands unlocked at 5:00. Racing gets underway at 6:00.

Canadian Drivers Dominate at Airborne

PLATTSBURGH – The Canadian drivers have had a strong startto start the 2017 season division at Airborne Park Speedway.

​That continued Saturday night. 

​Cornwall, ON driver Gage Morin picked up his first win and made it the fourth win for a Canadian driver in the Egglefield Ford 358 Modified division. Morin joins fellow Canadian competitor Chris Raabe, who has three wins and Plattsburgh driver Mike Perrotte with one. 

​Morin took the lead on lap-19 in turns one and two as he dove underneath Kayle Robidoux to complete the pass. Morin pulled away in the final 10 laps, never looking back.

​"I didn't want to show Kayle the the nose of the car and have him move down, so I decided to just power through on the inside," Morin said.

​Perrotte hustled through the field, making up ground on the inside to finish second. Raabe settled for third, with Robidouxand Todd Stone rounding out the top five.

​"The car was hooked up tonight, a lot of credit goes to the team," Morin added.

​The Fidelis Care Sportsman division ran a 25 lap feature with a repeat winner collecting the checkered flag.

​St. Louis de Gonzague, PQ driver Moïse Pagé won for the third time this season. Pagé worked to the front of the field early in the event before passing Gabriel Cyr on the outside in turns three and four.

​Unofficial point leader in the division, Connor Cleveland, drove from position 14 on the starting grid to finish second. Cyr, Joey Scarborough and Nick Heywood completed the top five.

​Sabrina Blanchet of Quebec City, PQ drove her way to the REV STAR STR main event. Blanchet used a lap-18 restart to drive away from Pierre Hébert and secure the win. Hébert finished second with Jonathan Archambault, Patrick Lague and Codie Aubin completing the top five.

​Brent Jarvis kept his winning streak alive in the Poirier's True Value Renegade division. Jarvis made it a perfect five for five with the win on Saturday. Jimmy Bushey and Metal Man completed the top three.

​Racing action resumes next Saturday with a 7 p.m. post time. It will be kids night at the speedway and you will want to be sure to get the kids there early for some giveaways. Eastern Ontario Legends Series Heads Back to Peterborough Speedway

Since kicking-off its inaugural schedule at Peterborough Speedway's season opener, the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series has turned heads, creating a stir in the provincial motorsports community. With strong car counts and incredible action from green flag to checkered, the upstart tour is cranking-out the hits. Matt Haufe has been the only main event winner to this point in the season, but series spokesperson Jeff Drimmie says that's only part of the story.

 

"We give our teams 25 laps to settle the score in every feature race and there has been some great racing at every show," said Drimmie, who along with Andrew McFadden, Geordie Ledson and Kevin Foisy make-up the team of EOLS officials. "With the right breaks and a little bit of luck, there isn't a driver in the field who can't make it to the winner's circle no matter where we run."

 

A quick glance at the current Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series point standings reveals exactly how talent-laden the group's driver roster actually is. Haufe's early success has given him a cushion of exactly 50 points over his nearest rival, but there is a gap of about 80 markers standing between 2nd and 8th positions. One race could make all the difference in the point chase.

 

The Eastern Ontario Legends Series will be back at Peterborough Speedway Saturday, June 24th as part of the track's annual Autism Awareness Night. Pit gates will open at 3:00, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00and the first green flag at 6:00.

FANS EAGERLY AWAIT ARRIVAL OF

VALENTI MODIFIED RACING SERIES

 

​Interest is at all time high for the huge event at Speedway 51 powered by the Autosaver Group this Saturday night, June 17th at 6pm as the Valenti Modified Racing Series invades the Northern New Hampshire speedplant.  Jericho Outdoors Arctic Cat Center from Berlin, New Hampshire is sponsoring all the night's activities which include a giant Fans Meet and Greet Party on the track at intermission.

 

​Chris Grey from the VMRS has stated that her phone has been ringing off the hook with inquiries from fans throughout the Northeast. "We have a very strong fan base throughout New England and our fans love it when we race on the high banked, short track bullrings. They have been calling for motel information, and directions to the speedway. This will be our second visit and we have a solid field of entries thus far. This will be our third race of the season and both previous winners have filed entry including current point leader and Stafford Speedway winner, Anthony Nocella as well as Lee Speedway winner Mike Douglas Jr. We have over twenty pre-entries and we think a few more teams will be there come Saturday,"stated Grey.

In an announcement today, Marc-Antoine Camirand will compete in the four events in the #22 Chevrolet Impala with partnership from GM Paillé #1 Au Canada of Berthierville, QC.

NAPLES, ME (June 15) – As the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North Super Late Models prepare for race number eight of the 2017 season, Farmington, ME's Cassius Clark will be seeking his first series win since 2014.  While the former series champion has performed well in a limited number of PASS appearances over the last few years, the numbers have still not been up to par for Clark.  This Sunday afternoon, Clark and his fellow PASS competitors will head to Bangor, ME's Speedway 95 for the Hight Chevrolet/Buick/GMC 150. 

Clark comes to "Maine's Family Fun Track" with three PASS North wins under his belt at the event named for his longtime sponsor, but still seeking redemption at the same time.  His most recent PASS win came at Speedway 95 in 2014 after contact past the start/finish line with DJ Shaw sent Clark into a dirt berm in turn one and out for the remainder of that season. 

Ultimately, team owner Corey Hight decided to cut back his racing schedule to spend more time with his family and Clark joined Canada's King Racing team.  While Clark is still competing for King Racing on a partial schedule, he and Hight have reunited for 2017 looking to get back to victory lane.  Not only this weekend at Speedway 95, but also in August's Oxford 250, short track racing's biggest prize, a crown jewel that either Clark or Hight have yet been able to obtain. 

            "We are looking forward to the Hight Chevy-Buick-GMC 150 this Sunday at Speedway 95," says Clark.  "Speedway 95 provides plenty of excitement and we hope to provide plenty of thatSunday afternoon and take home the checkered flag in the Hight Chevrolet #77."

            Speedway 95 has long seen some of the best short track racing in Maine.  At a track once dominated by the likes of veteran names such as Sessions, Clark, and Rowe, last year's race was won by Garrett Hall, who will return to defend his title this weekend.  While Hall and Clark will both be looking to return to victory lane at Speedway 95, a great battle for the championship is raging between former champions, Ben Rowe, DJ Shaw, and Johnny Clark.  Throw in former Oxford 250 winners Glen Luce and Travis Benjamin, along with championship contenders Derek Griffith and Dave Farrington, Jr. and this weekend's race has all the ingredients to be another classic at Speedway 95.

Action begins this Sunday at Speedway 95 with rotating practice from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, heat races beginning at 2 PM, followed by main events for the PASS North Super Late Models, PASS Modifieds, and Legends cars.  Adult tickets are just $15, Jr. tickets are $5, and kids five and under are free.

For some drivers, chasing the perfect race day set-up can almost be as difficult as chasing the checkered flag. With a pair of top 5 finishes to show for his first 2 starts of the 2017 season, Bryan Mercer would appear to have half of the equation figured out.

 

"I'd happily put my crew up against any of the others in the field," Bryan Mercer proudly stated. "My team has been with me for a number of years and they're one of the best in pits. They can take the information I give them and change the car to make it better. There isn't always a lot of time to switch things over, but I know they'll do the job to help get me to the front of the field."

 

Saturday, June 10th Bryan Mercer took some time during the afternoon to watch his son's ball hockey tournament and that meant the team arrived at Peterborough Speedway just as the pre-race practice sessions were wrapping-up. The driver and his team went through their set-up notes and went to work on getting ready for the night's first qualifying event. Within a couple of laps of the green flag, contact with another car sent the #81 machine to the pits and the crew went to work.

 

"There's a first time for everything and the throttle hung in the first qualifier," the driver said. "As long as I've been driving, that had never happened before. We got things corrected and even though the car was a little tight, we managed to win the second heat race and made more changes for the feature."

 

Mercer says from that point forward; the car was terrific. A yellow flag on the initial start moved him to the outside of the front row. Even though he would've preferred a spot on the preferred inside line, he made the best of the hand he'd been dealt and stayed close to the leaders. The pack worked through lapped traffic near the halfway mark and when the caution flew again with just a few laps remaining, he was once again in second spot. As the inside line slipped past, the second-generation racer from Port Hope, Ontario settled-in for a 3rd place finish.

 

"There wasn't a lot of grip up top, so I took what I could get. Consistency has its rewards and we haven't finished worse than 4th in our 3 starts. That's something our team can take back to the shop with pride."
