Cahoon Continues Late-Season Tear with Victory on U.S. Army Recruiting Night

Barre, Vt. – Danville's Tyler Cahoon dove inside Barre's Boomer Morris with nine laps remaining and went on to his first Thunder Road Late Model feature win of the season at U.S. Army Recruiting Night on Thursday, August 17. It was the third straight podium finish for the veteran driver as he continued his resurgence after a tough first half of the year.

 

Cahoon started fifth and first got to the inside of Morris on lap 27, but the pass was nullified by a backstretch crash involving Eric Chase and Ricky Roberts. Cahoon fell into a battle with Barre's Cody Blake on the ensuing restart as early leader Morris inched away.

 

The field was brought back together by a lap-38 caution when Kyle Pembroke and Christopher Pelkey went off turn one as the pack tried to navigate lapped traffic. Sitting third on the restart, Cahoon drove up the inside and muscled underneath Morris coming off turn two on lap 41. Morris ended up going hard into the frontstretch wall with four laps to go, but Cahoon held off Blake on the final restart for the victory.

 

Blake earned his third straight podium finish as well by edging out South Burlington's Trampas Demers for second. Point leader Bobby Therrien of Hinesburg took fourth and will unofficially extend his lead after copping his fifth Maplewood Semi-Feature win of the season earlier in the evening. Scott Dragon, Darrell Morin, Brooks Clark, Governor Phil Scott, Jason Corliss, and Mike Bailey rounded out the top-10.

 

Rookie Jamon Perry of Hardwick scored his second win of the year in the 40-lap Lenny's Shoe & Apparel Flying Tiger feature. Perry came quickly through the field from his ninth starting position to grab the lead from fellow rookie Jason Pelkey of Barre on lap 13. He then held off Pelkey through a serious of four cautions, including the final one on lap 28 when Dwayne Lanphear and Mike Billado got together fighting for the third spot, to cruise to the victory.

 

Craftsbury Common's Mike Martin moved up to second on the final restart. Wolcott's Brendan Moodie outdueled Pelkey in the final laps for third while Grand Isle's Joe Steffen completed the top-five. Point leader Jason Woodard recovered from a mid-race spin with a flat tire to finish sixth and unofficially maintain an 11-point edge over Moodie with three events remaining. Trevor Lyman, Matthew Potter, Brian Delphia, and Lanphear completed the top-10.

 

Wolcott's Jamie Davis captured his first win of the season in the Allen Lumber Street Stocks. Coming off a blown engine in the previous event, Davis got to the inside of polesitter Tom Campbell on lap 18 of the 25-lap event. Campbell then lost control in turn four, sweeping up point leader Cooper Bouchard and Michael Gay in the process. Davis held off rookie Stephen Martin of Craftsbury Common on the fourth and final restart for the victory.

 

Number-two point driver Brandon Lanphear of Morrisville completed the podium and stands to make a big gain in the standings after Bouchard ended up 12th. Kelsea Woodard, Alan Maynard, Dean Switser Jr., Gary Mullen, Kasey Collins, Matthew Smith, and Logan Powers also earned top-10 finishes.

 

The final Thursday night event of the season at Thunder Road is coming up next Thursday, August 24 with Jet Service Envelope/Accura Printing Night. A full card of action is scheduled for the Thunder Road Late Models, Lenny's Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, Allen Lumber Street Stocks and Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors with a 7:00pmpost time. The event will all feature the annual "Run-What-U-Brung" spectator races for street-legal vehicles that are registered, inspected, and insured. Admission is just $12 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12, and $25 for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids).

Some Big Names Still Searching For That First Oxford 250 Win

NAPLES, ME (August 17) – In just over a week now, an action-packed weekend of short track racing will commence with the 44th Annual Scott's Recreation Oxford 250 presented by Fastway Trailer Products at Oxford Plains Speedway.  The Oxford 250 is considered one of the crown jewels of asphalt Super Late Model racing.  With over $25,000 going to the winner of the race, more than 70 cars are expected to attempt to qualify for the 250-lap main event.  With heat races used to determine the starting field for the Oxford 250, it is viewed by many observers as one of the toughest races to qualify for in all of short track racing.  And, for the first time in the event's long history, the two-hour broadcast will air at a later date, tape-delayed to a national audience on MAV TV.

Last year, Pelham, NH's, Wayne Helliwell, Jr. captured his first Oxford 250 win by holding off two-time winner, Travis Benjamin.  It took Helliwell, who is considered by many to be one of the best Late Model racers in New England, nine tries to finally capture the elusive checkered flag in the 250.

Johnny and Cassius Clark, who are of no relation, could perhaps be two of the most successful drivers to have never won the Oxford 250.  Johnny Clark is a six-time champion of the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North Super Late Model division, with 36 wins to his credit.  In 10 Oxford 250 starts, J. Clark has only managed two top-5 finishes, with a runner-up finish coming in 2005.

For Cassius Clark, the numbers are very similar…nine starts, two top-5's, and a best finish of fourth in 2014. But, with a strong run in the most recent PASS North Super Late Model race at Oxford Plains Speedway, C. Clark comes to the 250 as favorite to put the Rollie MacDonald-owned #13 in victory lane this year.

Two-time and defending PASS North Super Late Model champion, DJ Shaw, has been one of the series hardest drivers to beat over the last decade, but has as of yet, not been able to get an Oxford 250 win.  But, if track knowledge and momentum is an indicator, he should be a challenger again after scoring his best finish, a third, in last year's race.

Tracy Gordon is another veteran hoping that time will be on his side in 2017.  Gordon has made 15 starts in the 250, dating all the way back to 1987.  Gordon has finished in the top five in over 25 percent of his Oxford 250 starts and scored back-to-back runner-up finishes in 1997 and 1998.  It has been a strong year for Gordon as he sits ninth in PASS North points coming into next weekend's 250.

Scarborough, ME's Kelly Moore has nearly as many starts in the 250 as Gordon with 13, but actually made his first start even earlier, in 1985.  It has been a tough go for Moore in the 250 in recent years, but he too has been a bridesmaid, finishing second to Dick McCabe in 1988.

These are just a handful of contenders among the 56 drivers currently entered for next weekend's 44th Annual Scott's Recreation Oxford 250 presented by Fastway Trailer Products.  And, that's not counting the young talent which will be making their first of many starts in this prestigious race.  All the action gets underway on Friday, August 25th and culminates in front of the MAV TV cameras on Sunday afternoon, August 27.  For entry forms, the complete weekend schedule, and the most up-to-date list of entries please go to ProAllStarsSeries.com

Antigonish, (Nouvelle-Écosse, Canada), le 21 août 2017 – C'est avec engouement et impatience que l'équipe #47 WeatherTech Canada/ Groupe Bellemare était plus que prête pour le départ de la course qui devait se dérouler hier sur le circuit du Riverside International Speedway. Sur la grille de départ en huitième position (suivant son meilleur chrono obtenu lors de la séance d'essais d'hier), Louis-Philippe Dumoulin se dirigeait vers une remontée intéressante lorsqu'il a été poussé par un compétiteur vers le mur extérieur au 76e tour. Cet incident a causé des dommages irréparables à la voiture #47 WeatherTech Canada/ Groupe Bellemare forçant l'équipe à se retirer de la course.

 

Les officiels de la série NASCAR Pinty's ont dû s'adapter aux soubresauts de la météo hier (samedi 19 août). Les qualifications ont été annulées à cause de la pluie et les positions de départ de l'épreuve de 300 tours ont été déterminées selon les temps enregistrés lors de la séance d'essais.

 

La course a bien commencé pour le pilote de la voiture #47 WeatherTech Canada/ Groupe Bellemare toutefois, le choc contre le mur (76e tour) a endommagé la suspension arrière et les engrenages du pont arrière. L'équipe a travaillé d'arrache-pied afin de remettre la voiture en état de marche, cependant, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin a dû entrer aux puits à plusieurs reprises lorsque d'autres problèmes mécaniques se sont manifestés.

 

« La voiture se comportait très bien jusqu'à l'incident en début de course. Malgré l'énorme travail accompli par l'équipe, les dommages majeurs n'ont pu être réparés sur place. Cette situation nous coûte cher en points perdus au championnat, toutefois nous serons de retour encore plus forts pour la prochaine épreuve », explique Louis-Philippe Dumoulin.

Milverton, ON, August 15, 2017: Exciting news out of the 22 Racing shop as Adam Andretti announced earlier today on 570 News with Mike Farwell that he will drive again for the team in 2017.
 
Adam Andretti made his debut for 22 Racing in the NASCAR Pinty's Series at the Pinty's Grand Prix of Toronto in conjunction with the Toronto Honda Indy in mid-July on a track he had not previously raced on.  He put on a spectacular show coming from the back of the field twice to finish on the podium in 3rd.
 
Now Andretti will return to the NASCAR Pinty's Series to a track he knows and has raced on previously in Trans Am.  He will return to action on Labour Day weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in the #44 Engineered Components/Anchor Screw & Bolt Dodge for 22 Racing.
 
"I am so pumped to be back at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park," said an enthusiastic Andretti.  "I have not been back since the 2015 Trans Am season.  Ever since the checkered flag fell at the Pinty's Toronto Grand Prix I have been chomping at the bit to get back behind the wheel of the 22 Racing Engineered Components/Anchor Bolt & Screw #44.  I can't think of a better place than CTMP to get my second NASCAR Pinty's Series start.  This place is very special to our family, it even has a straightaway named for my Uncle Mario and is also the site of my father Aldo's last race in 1984.  One thing I do know for sure is there is going to be very tough competition out there.  The toughest arguably coming from my teammates Alex & Marc-Antoine who are coming off very strong performances at Trois-Rivieres last weekend.  As always I am looking forward to interacting with the great race fans at CTMP and battling fierce competition found in the NASCAR Pinty's Series."

Barre, Vt. – Barre's Thunder Road nears the zenith of its weekly racing season this Thursday, August 17 with U.S. Army Recruiting Night. The second-to-last Thursday night date on the calendar features a full card of action for the Thunder Road Late Models, Lenny's Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, and Allen Lumber Street Stocks as they draw closer to crowning the 2017 track champions.

 

Hinesburg's Bobby Therrien continues to lead the Late Model ranks, currently holding a 21-point edge over South Burlington's Trampas Demers with just three point-counting events remaining. Should he remain on top at season's end, Therrien would become the first driver in modern Thunder Road history to hold titles in three different divisions. He previously won the 2007 Street Stock and 2012 Flying Tiger championships.

 

The Memorial Day Classic winner has ridden solid feature results and outstanding qualifying performances, including four Maplewood Semi-Feature victories, to the head of the standings. Demers has remained within striking distance by leading the division with five podium finishes, including his win in the Vermont Governor's Cup on July 13.

 

Two-time 2017 feature winner Jason Corliss of Barre and defending "King of the Road" Scott Dragon of Milton sit a distant third and fourth in points as the season winds down. Barre's Cody Blake rocketed up to fifth in the rankings after taking the Maplewood Triple Crown last Thursday night.

 

For the first time all season, the Lenny's Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers have a new name atop the standings. Waterbury Center's Jason Woodard used his fourth feature win of the year last Thursday to wrestle the top spot from Wolcott's Brendan Moodie, who had led the division since Opening Day. The 2014 Champion now has a 16-point lead over the 2015 Champion with four point-counting events left on the schedule.

 

Three-time 2017 winner Trevor Lyman of Hinesburg and 1991 "King of the Road" Dwayne Lanphear of Morrisville are now tied for third in the standings 49 points back of Woodard. Top rookie Jaden Perry of Hardwick completes the top five.

 

Hinesburg's Cooper Bouchard has broken through the pack in the Allen Lumber Street Stocks in the past few weeks and now holds a 38-point advantage over Morrisville's Brandon Lanphear. The battle from second through seventh remains razor-close with Lanphear, Fairfax's Alan Maynard, Wolcott's Jamie Davis, Waterbury Center's Kelsea Woodard, Waitsfield's Kevin Streeter, and Lyndonville's Dean Switser Jr. separated by just 14 points. All are in position to get back in the title hunt should Bouchard run into any difficulties.

 

The next round of the 2017 Thunder Roadseason goes to post at 7:00pm this Thursday, August 17. In addition to the weekly racing action, U.S. Army Recruiting Night will also feature a Junior Champ Kart exhibition event for drivers in the Tuesday night racing series that have completed the Race to Read program. The pit gates will open at 3:30pmand the front gates will open at 5:15pm. Admission is $12 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12, and $25 for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids).

Considering the level of success he has attained since becoming a regular on the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series schedule, it might be quicker to list the things Brandt Graham hasn't done, than the things he has. Saturday, August 12th, the 19 year-old from Orono, Ontario – who is the reigning series champion – set a new track record during qualifying at Peterborough Speedway, with a lap of 14.50 seconds; eclipsing a mark that had stood since August of 2015. And that was just for starters.

 

In the fast-time re-draw, the second-generation speedster was matched-up with a young fan whose ballcap selection allowed him to keep the inside front row starting spot that he'd earned earlier in the night. From the drop of the green flag, the #14 machine was on rails, allowing Graham to build-up an advantage of nearly 8 or 9 car lengths on the second-place runner and begin working through cars at the back of the field when the first caution flag waved with 16 laps complete.

 

"Even though there had been bit of rain before we got on the track for our first practice session, the car felt great," said the recent graduate of Durham College. "We went through some of our notes from last year and jotted-down a few ideas of things we could change, but stayed on course with the car almost exactly as it had rolled off the trailer."

 

On the restart, Brandt Graham was once again in control of the field. He ran consistent speeds and hit his marks lap-after-lap. Just as he was about to lap the 3rd place car in the running order on the 70th circuit, another yellow flag slowed the field. With caution laps being counted as green during the later stages, the team set-up their driver for the final shootout.

 

"Its nice to have a calming voice in my ear, but there wasn't too much to say," Graham said. "They told me that the #4 car looked to be getting stronger, but to just keep doing what I'd been doing and everything should work out."

 

Everything did work out for Brandt Graham, who claimed his second main event win of the year, leading all 100 laps in a wire-to-wire finish. After waiting more than a month since his last start, the team will return to action Saturday, August 19th when the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series heads back to Flamboro Speedway for The Basement Store 100.

Eddie Mac has the knack at Beech Ridge

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – Eddie MacDonald passed American Canadian Tour (ACT) point leader Scott Payea for the lead on lap 41 and went on to win the Coastal 100 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway Saturday.

 

MacDonald was shadowed by Payea the rest of the way as race stayed under green from start to finish. His winning margin of three car-lengths was the farthest MacDonald ever got from Payea, who was attempting to break his own record of four consecutive ACT Late Model wins.

 

"I was glad to be able to steal a little thunder from him, he's having a great year," MacDonald said. "It was starting to look like the race was going to stay green and I wanted the lead if I could get it."

 

Jimmy Hebert finished third well behind the leaders a short distance head of a torrid battle for fourth that went to Jean-Francois Dery.

 

Rowland Robinson Jr. (from 13th) was a close fifth, three feet ahead of Oren Remick, who edged out Rich Dubeau to finish 6th.

 

Miles Chipman, Dillon Moltz and Shawn Swallow completed the top ten.

 

"Eddie wanted to get racy early," Payea said. "I decided to let him go and wait for a yellow to cool the tires, but it never came. I can't be disappointed. Any time you have a solid finish up front, you don't want to ask for more."

 

Payea started on the outside pole and quickly grabbed the lead. Remick took up hot pursuit from the fourth starting spot before yielding second place to MacDonald on lap 23.

 

At the halfway mark, MacDonald was in front with Payea glued to his bumper while Hebert worked underneath Remick for third, several car-lengths off the pace.

 

"I got pushed up the track some racing the 30-car (Dubeau) and I found the outside had come in and I got going better," Hebert said, "but I needed a caution. I used the tires up some trying to stay with the leaders."

 

MacDonald's win was his first ACT victory this season. He has five top-5's in his last five starts at Beech Ridge, including a win in 2013.

 

"We changed the car a lot," MacDonald said. "I love coming out and racing with ACT. Thanks to my team and my sponsors Hancock Electric, Exit Realty, Annie Mac Home Mortgages and Grimm Construction."

 

Miles Chipman, Josh Masterson and Payea won the qualifying heats.

Devil's Bowl Speedway Returning to Dirt Racing Full-Time in 2018

Asphalt era closing with Late Model 100 on September 2; ACT event cancelled

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Devil's Bowl Speedway is going back to its roots: Full-time dirt track racing will return in 2018.  After eight years with an asphalt half-mile, with the last four years running with both asphalt and dirt layouts, the Rutland County facility will have an all-new half-mile dirt surface for its 52nd season.

The changeover marks the third period in the speedway's history that dirt racing will be held on a half-mile surface; the track was similar in its first four seasons from 1967 to 1970 and again from 1975 through 2009.  Asphalt racing has been held on the half-mile oval twice, from 1971 through 1974, and most recently from 2010 to the present.  A 3/10-mile dirt track was built in the infield of the half-mile in 2014 and has operated simultaneously with the asphalt track since then.

The asphalt surface will remain intact as a solid base.  A fresh new layer of natural Champlain Valley clay, which will be excavated from the speedway property in West Haven, will be laid down over the asphalt beginning in early September.  About half of the width of the current infield dirt track will be also used, creating a racing surface approximately 75-80 feet wide with progressive banking in the corners.  Should time and weather permit, an open test session will be held on the new surface in the fall.

In addition to the surface change, initial plans also call for an infield pit road to be constructed for use in long-distance races, and early preparation is underway to raise the height of the grandstand bleacher seating in order to provide a better viewing experience for race fans.  Racing at Devil's Bowl Speedway will continue under sanctioning from the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series for the eighth consecutive year in 2018.

Recent increases in car counts and participation in the asphalt track's Super Stock and Mini Stock support classes have been encouraging, but the headline Sportsman Modified and Late Model divisions have ultimately proven to not be sustainable as weekly attractions.

In addition, Devil's Bowl Speedway owners Mike and Alayne Bruno are hoping to lessen the workload for a dedicated group of staff, volunteers, and family.  With asphalt racing on Saturday nights and dirt racing on Sunday nights, the current operational aspect of the facility has created a grinding seven-day work week.

 "This decision is something that we have worked hard on for the last three years," Mike Bruno said.  "This is very bittersweet for me and my family.  We have always loved asphalt racing and we are very proud of what we have accomplished during our six years at Devil's Bowl.  We will always be grateful for the support of our drivers and teams across all of our divisions through the good times and the bad times.  Unfortunately, we feel that asphalt racing is heading in the wrong direction in this region and we have to make a change.  We are excited to turn the page and start fresh with a brand new dirt track at Devil's Bowl and build toward the future."

Bruno made the announcement on Saturday afternoon prior to the asphalt racing event that evening and thanked the teams for their dedication since Bruno took ownership of Devil's Bowl Speedway in November 2011.  Bruno recognized several drivers by name for their support including Ron Proctor, Vince Quenneville Jr., and Robert Bryant Jr., who have competed in every event for their respective divisions since that time.

Bruno also announced changes to the end of the 2017 stock car racing schedule.  Due to below-average car counts in the weekly Sportsman Modified division, the two-day "Vermont Championship Weekend" event on September 9-10 has been cancelled and officials from the American-Canadian Tour have agreed to remove that series' doubleheader from their schedule.

Devil's Bowl Speedway's asphalt racing era will draw to a close on Labor Day weekend with a huge event on the afternoon of Saturday, September 2.  A 100-lap Late Model race will be the main event, along with an Enduro.  Sportsman Modifieds will run the annual "Leon Gonyo Memorial" event, and the Super Stocks and Mini Stocks will have extra-distance feature races.  The Bandit Youth and Ladies Mini Stock classes will also be on hand.

Racing will start at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 2.  The final Asphalt Track Champions will be crowned in the Sportsman Modified, Super Stock, and Mini Stock divisions, and the annual pig roast barbecue party and bonfire will be held in the evening along with music and a fireworks display.  General admission will be $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, $5 for teenagers (age 13-17), and free for kids age 12 and under.

Raphaël Lessard, le jeune pilote du programme de développement Toyota (TRD), se sent d'attaque pour sa troisième course en sept jours et il ne vise rien de moins qu'un podium, suite à ses deux TOP 10 de dimanche et mercredi soirs derniers. 

 

Samedi, le Beauceron participera au Level Pebble 200 de la série CRA au Flat Rock Speedway, de Flat Rock au Michigan, une course de 125 tours, et il anticipe avec plaisir la pause de deux semaines qui suivra cette semaine folle.

 

Le Flat Rock Speedway est un petit ovale d'à peine 1/4 de mille (0,25 mile/0,4 km) avec un record de piste pour Late Models de 12,034  secondes établi en 2012 par Travis Braden.
