Course à oublier pour Raphaël Lessard lors 

du Deep South Cranes 125 en Floride

 

PENSACOLA, Floride, samedi le 23 septembre – La journée du jeune Beauceron n'aura pas été aussi longue que prévue alors que tout semblait aller mal pour le pilote de la Toyota Camry #99 samedi soir alors qu'il participait à la finale du championnat de la Southern Super Series (SSS) en Floride. Lessard n'aura réalisé que 27 tours sur les 125 prévus à Pensacola, sur l'ovale du Five Flags Speedway dans le cadre du Deep South Cranes 125. 

 

La journée a commencé sur le même ton alors que le pilote du programme de développement de Toyota (TRD) a reçu une pénalité pour un problème de garde au sol trop basse, avant même la qualification, bien qu'il fut passé trois fois devant les officiels, avant de se faire pénaliser d'un tour. Raphaël n'a eu droit donc qu'à un seul tour de qualification au lieu de deux. 

 

Le pilote de la voiture Toyota Camry #99 FRL Express/Toyota-TRD/JBL Audio de l'équipe de course David Gilliland Racing a été en mesure d'établir le 19e meilleur temps en seulement un tour. S'élançant donc de l'arrière du peloton, Lessard n'a pas eu le temps d'effectuer une remontée comme il sait les faire avant que sa course ne se termine abruptement au 27e tour. 

 

Raphaël Lessard a eu un contact avec le mur après qu'un roulement de sa roue avant droite ne casse. Un bris qui n'est pas de sa faute, mais qui est tout de même frustrant puisqu'il ne parvint à faire que le quart de la course. 

 

« Je suis très déçue de ma soirée, ce n'est pas du tout ce que j'avais envisagé comme résultat. Par contre, ça ne sert à rien de trop y penser, nos deux courses importantes sont à venir et la voiture sera prête pour les deux épreuves de 400 tours, » déclare Lessard. 

 

Les deux prochaines courses de Raphaël s'annoncent cruciales pour la carrière du jeune pilote québécois alors qu'il participera à deux épreuves mythiques de 400 tours. Premièrement, le All American 400 sur le Fairground Speedway à Nashville au Tennessee, puis le Winchester 400 sur l'ovale du Winchester Speedway en Indiana. Le All American 400 se déroulera le 30 septembreet 1er octobre, tandis que le Winchester 400 sera la semaine d'après du 6 au 8 octobre.

Spreading the 'News' About the Autumn Colours Classic at Peterborough Speedway

This year, the Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – at Peterborough Speedway celebrates its 25th anniversary. Even though Ontario's premier auto racing event has been around for a quarter of a century, each year there are still teams who'll be making their first career start in the prestigious race.

 

With a wealth of experience at the venue known as Canada's Toughest 3rdof a Mile Paved Oval, Paul Pierik had never turned a lap in the season-ending Autumn Colours event. In just a couple of weeks, that statistic will change in a big way as the 51 year-old from Hastings, Ontario will unload his Eastern Ontario Legends machine as well as the #33 Organics & Glass Late Model for the show billed as the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing.

 

Since concluding the 2017 regular season just outside the top 15 in the final Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun point standings, Chris Tubman has been counting the days leading-up to his debut at the year's biggest post-season event at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval. The 38 year-old, who currently resides in Norwood, Ontario – but grew-up in Peterborough – did well during the schedule that just wrapped-up and is looking forward to his maiden voyage at Autumn Colours.

 

His #72 Organics & Glass Late Model carried a yellow stripe on its rear bumper since the opening night of Peterborough Speedway's regular season. Even though he finished 5th in the final point standings, Steve Powell wasn't just a rookie in the track's top class. 2017 was his first year of racing in any format. The 41 year-old – who is originally from Millbrook, but now makes his home in Norwood, Ontario – had some of the best in the business, including Derek and Dave Lynch to help guide his way. Powell – who owns and operates Custom Mobile Wash – will look to add a new experience to his resume, with his first career Autumn Colours Classic start.

 

There will be a smattering of first-time ACC runners throughout the weekend, including 2017 feature event winner Rob Crick, Corey Strawn, Jassen Whyte, Mike Feeney and others in a 4Fun field that saw nearly 40 different drivers start at least 1 main event. Like Pierik, Cory Richardson will also make his Autumn Colours Classic debut in the Eastern Ontario Legends Series events.

 

Fans have booked vacation time for the 25th edition of the Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – at Peterborough Speedway. Things get underway Friday, October 6thwith the first round of qualifying for the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Thunder Car, Organics & Glass Late Model, Pro Late Model and OSCAAR Modified divisions. The opening night of action will also see the Mini Stock and Thunder Car Young Guns races, presented by APC.

With Peterborough Speedway starts in both the Organics & Glass Late Model and Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends, Paul Pierik (#33) will run both cars in his first ever Autumn Colours Classic.

Brandt Graham Clinches the 2017 Sportsman Cup Title at the Flamboro Finale

Earning the overall title in a national or provincial short track travelling race series is an impressive accomplishment. Achieving that level of success in back-to-back seasons – before your 20thbirthday – is a goal that most drivers will never reach.

 

Orono, Ontario's Brandt Graham made his debut with the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series at just 17 years of age. Before the end of his first season on the tour, the youngster had earned a place in the record books as the youngest main event winner in series history and was also named rookie of the year. After his sophomore term, the second-generation speedster was crowned the group's overall champion at the age of 18. After his 4th place finish in the Basement Stores 100 – Saturday, September 16th, at Flamboro Speedway – Graham clinched his second consecutive championship.

 

After setting fast-time during qualifying, the #14 machine started in second place on the grid as result of the fan-participation 'Fast 5' draw. With the 100-lap advertised race distance split into a pair of segments, Graham and his team knew where they'd need to finish in order to claim the title. They signed-in at the pit gate with less than a 10-point lead in the standings and after the checkered flag, came away with just an 11-point cushion on the driver in second place.

 

"We worked hard all year to get where we are right now and capturing a second straight championship is an excellent award for the team," said Brandt Graham, in victory lane. "It would have been great to punctuate the title-clinching event with another race win, but that doesn't make the accomplishment any less rewarding. At the start of the year, we were looking to earn another crown and it feels great to have achieved that goal."

DIRTcar Sportsman Series Invades Airborne

 



PLATTSBURGH – The final regular racing weekend is upon us and it will take the green flag at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Airborne Park Speedway.

​The DIRTcar Sportsman North Series will invade the trackto compete in a 50-lap main event. A strong field of Sportsman drivers from Quebec, Ontario and northeast New York are expected and will battle for a starting spot in the 30-car field.

​In addition, the 358-Modifieds will race in the 30-lap Leon Gonyo Memorial race. Gonyo was a long-time competitor at Airborne along with a number of other tracks in the northeast. Gonyo's heart was with dirt racing and we are glad to have a dirt race in his memory.

​Point battles will wrap up on Sunday for the Poirier's True Value Renegades, Busch Beer Mini-Mods and Strictly Stocks. All three of the support divisions will run heat races and feature events.

​The DIRTcar Sportsman North Series will have a busy weekend as they roll into Plattsburgh. On Friday they will travel to Le RPM Speedway in Saint-Marcel, Quebec and then battle at Autodrome Drummond in Drummondville, Quebec on Saturday. Through three North Series races, three different winners have stepped into victory lane. Tristan Draper, Justin Lalancette and Jonathan Ferguson have found the win column with three events left to go.

RAPHAËL LESSARD CONTRAINT À L'ABANDON AU TOLEDO SPEEDWAY

 

TOLEDO, Ohio, 16 septembre 2017 – Raphaël Lessard, pilote originaire de St-Joseph-de-Beauce, prenait le départ du Glass City 200 au Toledo Speedway en Ohio dans la Super Série ARCA/CRA samedi soir. Victime d'un accident en piste dès le dixième tour, le jeune pilote de 16 ans a été contraint à l'abandon au 73e tour. 

 

Le pilote de la Toyota Camry #99 FRL Express/Toyota-TRD/JBL Audio préparée par David Gilliland Racing avait signé le 4e chrono lors de la séance de qualification plus tôt dans la journée. Avec les 9 premières positions inversées, il a donc pris le départ de la course de la 6e place.

 

Après 10 tours seulement, un accident en piste est venu mettre un terme aux chances de Raphaël d'accéder au Top 3. En effet, Dalton Armstrong et Tristan Van Wieringen se sont accrochés, surprenant Raphaël et un adversaire qui suivaient derrière. Les deux n'ont pu éviter l'incident, créant un deuxième accrochage. Arrachant son pare-choc avant et l'aile de sa voiture, Raphaël est entré aux puits pour que l'équipe répare le tout.

 

Après un retour en piste, la voiture ne fonctionnait pas très bien, et au 73e tour le pilote du programme de développement de Toyota (TRD) a été contraint à l'abandon, ne voulant pas risquer d'abîmer la voiture encore plus. Bien qu'il n'ait effectué que 73 tours, Lessard a terminé tout de même au 13e rang, sur 22 pilotes.

 

« Nous avions une bonne voiture aujourd'hui », affirme Raphaël, visiblement déçue. « Je suis certain qu'on aurait pu terminer dans le Top 3 car ça allait très bien au début. Je préservais bien mes pneus et j'effectuais une bonne remontée. C'était ma première fois à cette piste qui est très spéciale, donc signer le 4e temps en qualification m'a étonné, mais je sentais que je m'améliorais à chaque tour. Il n'y a rien qu'on aurait pu faire d'autre, on va continuer à travailler fort. Merci beaucoup à l'équipe qui a fait un très bon travail cette fin de semaine sur la voiture. »

 

La prochaine course de Raphaël Lessard se déroulera le 23 septembre prochain dans la série SSS au 5 Flags Speedway, à Pensacola en Floride.

Montréal, 16 septembre 2017 - Les pilotes Alex Tagliani et Greg Taylor de l'équipe Craft-Bamboo Racing sont montés sur la troisième marche du podium à l'issue de la septième étape de la série asiatique FRD LMP3 (Le Mans Prototype 3) disputée samedi sur le circuit routier de Zhuhai en Chine. Qualifié au huitième rang lors de la séance de vendredi, l'Australien Taylor s'est rapidement faufilé au deuxième rang à la suite d'un incident devant lui dès le premier virage de la course. Malheureusement pour lui une erreur de pilotage au sixième passage le fait glisser au cinquième rang. Prenant la relève au 15e tour, Tagliani s'est retrouvé au troisième rang à la suite d'un ravitaillement rapide de l'équipe Craft-Bamboo lors du changement obligatoire des pilotes à la mi-course.


Le pilote originaire de Lachenaie s'est battu pour maintenir sa voiture Ligier JS P3 numéro 20 aux couleurs de Jackson Storm du film Les Bagnoles 3 de Disney au troisième rang malgré des problèmes de freins en fin de course. Il a croisé l'arrivée avec un recul de 11 secondes sur le duo vainqueur Hiroki Yoshida et Jamie Winslow de la seconde voiture de l'équipe Craft-Bamboo Racing. Garnet Patterson et Martin Cao de l'équipe Eurasia ont terminé au deuxième rang, quatre secondes devant Tagliani.


« C'est toujours plaisant de se retrouver sur le podium après être parti du huitième rang sur la grille, a déclaré Tagliani. Greg (Taylor) avait qualifié la voiture pour cette course. Il a donc pris le départ et c'est tout un départ, car il a su éviter les accrochages dans le premier virage de la course pour se retrouver deuxième. Mais, il a commis une faute dans un virage et il a chuté en cinquième place. Greg occupait toujours cette position lorsqu'il est entré aux stands pour le changement de pilote à la mi-course. À mon entrée en piste, je me suis retrouvé au troisième rang, position que j'ai maintenue jusqu'à l'arrivée en alignant des chronos similaires à la voiture qui me précédait au deuxième rang, malgré mes problèmes de freins. J'espère qu'on pourra répéter l'exploit dimanche et même se battre pour la victoire. La chaleur est intense ici en Chine et le circuit est très exigeant pour les pneus et les freins. Je devrai donc les préserver avant de remettre la voiture à Greg lors du changement de pilote. »


Tagliani et Taylor seront de retour en piste dimanche à 15 h 30, heure de Chine (3 h 30, heure de Montréal) pour la huitième et ultime étape de la saison inaugurale de la série asiatique FRD LMP3. Tagliani prendra le départ de cette course, ayant qualifié sa Ligier JS P3 au septième rang.

Matt Craig Continues PASS South Dominance At South Boston

SOUTH BOSTON, VA (September 16) – Matt Craig took the lead just shy of halfway and led the rest of the way to win the South Boston 150 Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.  Craig's fifth Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South Super Late Model win of the season and the sixth of his career further extends his lead in the championship as he seeks to become the first two-time champion in series history.

"Unbelievable season, I can't thank everybody enough, all my guys have worked so hard on the car all year long," said Craig, driver of the C&C Boilers Sales and Service Chevrolet #54.  "The track is so fast and so fun and we just had a great race.  It's just been an awesome year."

The 2015 PASS South Super Late Model champion, Tate Fogleman, started on the pole and jumped out to a sizeable advantage over the rest of the field at the start.  Trevor Noles flexed his muscle in the early stages, tapping Brandon Setzer to move into second on lap 15.  Ryan Moore looked to have a good run going, but slowed with a suspension problem on lap 27.

The first caution of the night would not wave until lap 54 when Sarah Cornett-Ching slammed the turn three wall while running eighth.  Back under green, both Noles and Craig were able to move past Fogleman and into the lead.  Fogleman's night would end a few laps later when he spun in turn four due to a rear end problem.

On the restart, Craig would get the advantage over Noles to take the lead in turn one.  Local favorite Austin Thaxton's strong third place run came to an end on lap 76 with an apparent engine problem.

After several exciting moments negotiating lapped traffic, Craig was able to hold off Noles for the win over Dave Farrington, Jr., Jared Fryar, and Jay Fogleman.  Rounding out the top ten were Kodie Conner, Roy Hayes, JP Josiasse, Tim Pinion, and Thaxton.

The PASS South Super Late Models will be again in action on Saturday, October 21 for 150 laps at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, NC, along with the SMRS Tour Modifieds and Limited Sportsman.

Sunset Speedway is Next for the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Tour

To only call it 'action' isn't enough. The 2017 Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series season has delivered the ultimate of motorsports excitement lap-after-lap, with every turn of the wheel. After a strong year, the countdown is on and only a pair of events remain before the tour crowns its first champion. Next on the agenda is a return to Sunset Speedway on Saturday, September 23rd.

 

The popular oval – located north of the Greater Toronto Area – has already played host to a trio of EOLS events, with feature race wins by Matt Haufe, Kevin Foisy and a Saturday, August 5th victory by Robin Jongen in the year's second qualifier for the U.S. Legends Asphalt Nationals – October 13th and 14th – at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring. Speaking on behalf of the Eastern Ontario Legends team of officials – that also includes Andrew McFadden, Kevin Foisy and Geordie Ledson – Jeff Drimmie says its quite likely the outcome of the inaugural season will come down to the final checkered flag at the Autumn Colours Classic.

 

"Most of our events have been staged at Peterborough Speedway, but in addition to Sunset, the series has also turned laps at Kawartha and September 9th and 10th, our teams headed west to Grand Bend Speedway's oval and also ran a test session for a possible future road course date," Drimmie explained. "Ever since the first green flag of the year, its been our goal to expose the Eastern Ontario Legends Series brand to as many fans as possible and I think we can call our mission a success."

 

Drimmie says the east-versus-west events shows at Grand Bend brought some new players into the fold, with U.S. invader Gregory Rudzik taking the Saturday win on the oval after 30 laps of caution-free racing. The combined 2 division event had a total of 9 Saturday races without a single yellow flag. Adam Cuthbertson claimed the victory in the road course test session.

Adam Cuthbertson (#79) won the Eastern Ontario Legends road course test – Sunday, September 10th – at Grand Bend Speedway. The series returns to action Saturday, September 23rd at Sunset Speedway.

Strength in Numbers at Peterborough Speedway's Autumn Colours Classic

Ask even a casual stock car racing fan about the driver who made the number 43 famous and almost everyone will answer 'Richard Petty'. Even though he lost his life in a crash at the Daytona 500 in 2001, Dale Earnhardt will be forever linked to the black #3 car and for many, Jeff Gordon will always be known as the driver of the #24. At every level of the sport, racing is all about numbers. They help fans identify their favourite drivers and let raceway officials track position during an event.

 

With Peterborough Speedway's 25th edition of the Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – less than a month away, the motorsports number game is ready to take on an entirely different meaning. Taking the checkered flag in Ontario's premier auto racing event is such a coveted achievement, several drivers are expected to run a number of different classes, while some teams will file multiple entries in search of the big prize.

 

Gary Elliott – the self-proclaimed 'Canadian Ironman' – is looking forward to the Autumn Colours Classic. The event will not only be his 25th of the year, if everything goes according to plan, it will also be his 800th consecutive race for the Dundas, Ontario veteran in a career that began in 1987. Elliott says his current plan is to run with the OSCAAR Modified division, but he hasn't ruled-out bringing his Late Model along as well and running a pair of different classes, as he has done in the past.

 

Former track champion and ACC winner Ryan Kimball also has plans to climb behind the wheel of multiple entries. The Norwood, Ontario racer – who started on the pole with at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with an American-Canadian Tour machine – has confirmed plans to contend for his next Autumn Colours Classic in the Organics & Glass Late Model field, as well as an OSCAAR Super Late Model.

 

"If past seasons are any indication, there will several duplicate car numbers through the different divisions," said Peterborough Speedway owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse. "These teams are familiar with the process and will readily add an 'X' or some other letter to their car to help the scorers and eliminate any confusion."

 

The 25th edition of the Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – is scheduled for Friday,Saturday and Sunday – October 6th through the 8th – at Peterborough Speedway. The first day's activities include technical inspection and practice rounds, along with the first round of qualifying for the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Thunder Cars, Organics & Glass Late Model, Pro Late Model and OSCAAR Modified divisions. Young Guns Races – sponsored by APC Auto Parts – for the Mini Stock and Thunder Car classes are also part of the opening night race card.

 

Pit gates open at 10:00, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and racing starting at 6:00.
