NASCAR Next Drivers Put On A Show In K&N Pro East Opener At New Smyrna
New Smyrna, Fla. -- If Sunday night's NASCAR K&N Pro Series East finish is any indication, the sport's future is going to be exciting.
Todd Gilliland and Harrison Burton, a pair of 17-year-old NASCAR Next drivers, put on a two-lap brawl that had fans on their feet at the finish and social media buzzing long after the checkered flag flew.
Gilliland emerged with the victory in the New Smyrna 175, diving under Burton for the lead on the white flag lap and winning the drag race down the back stretch. Cole Rouse, 20 and another rising young star, nearly made it three-wide across the line and stole the runner-up spot from Burton at the finish.
"Hard racing for the win," Gilliland said of the battle. "That stuff is going to happen. We were both very hungry to get the win."
Burton, who led 79 laps, lost the top spot on Lap 131. But with two to go, he used a bump-and-run into Turn 3 to take the lead back. Gilliland, though, muscled his way by less than a half-lap later.
The victory was the sixth career on the East, and was his 19th victory combined in the K&N Pro Series.
"Luckily we put this Toyota Camry in Victory Lane." said Gilliland, who will be running a split schedule between the K&N Pro Series and Camping World Truck Series after winning the last two K&N Pro West titles. "I can't thank everyone on my team enough. It's a dream come true to be back here."
The Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, driver started from the outside of the front row after Burton won the pole, and the two swapped the lead back and forth throughout the race. The major twist in the battle came when Gilliland and the rest of the leaders pitted during the first of two race breaks on lap 63 and Burton stayed on the track.
Burton found himself in fuel conservation mode for the rest of the race – up until the final few laps of battling.
"We were saving gas from the beginning of the race," Burton said. "At the end of the race, you aren't think about it when you are racing like that, but I'm sure we were pretty close. It was just two guys going hard for the win, that's what we come to do, we are both racing for the W."
Rouse's Bill McAnally Racing teammate, Derek Kraus, finished fourth.
Tyler Ankrum, who blew a motor in practice and was forced to start at the tail end of the field, nearly drove to the front and rounded out the top five.
Spencer Davis finished sixth, followed by Anthony Sergi, Ronnie Bassett Jr., Tyler Dippel and Brandon McReynolds.
The New Smyrna 175 will air on NBCSN on Tuesday Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. ET.
The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East returns to the track on April 14 at Bristol Motor Speedway for the Zombie Auto 150.

Barre, Vt. – After four years largely spent on the sidelines, Jeffersonville veteran Joey Becker is returning to competition at Thunder Road. The former Memorial Day Classic Champion has filed the first official entry for the Myers Container Service Triple Crown and will strap into the driver's seat once again for the three-race series that will open as a part of a special Friday night event on Friday, June 8.
Becker is a multi-time winner in both the Flying Tigers and the Maplewood/Irving Late Models. However, he has not raced in a Thunder Road weekly event since 2014, when he retired from the seat of the #16VT Richard Green Racing Late Model. He spent more than a decade with the Richard Green team as a driver; since then, he has remained with the organization as a crew member and mechanic, helping replacement Scott Dragon win the 2016 "King of the Road" title.
But for three nights this summer, Becker will return to the division where he was one of the top drivers for many years. He will pilot the #05 Waste Oil Heating Systems of VT Chevrolet owned and prepared by 2008 Flying Tiger Champion Craig Bushey.
"I really wasn't planning on this at all," Becker said of his comeback. "Craig had put a bug in my ear for a while, and I didn't really take it too seriously. But then he got after me pretty hard, and I said, 'I've got Scott's Late Model to deal with, and I really don't have time.' Craig said, 'you just need to be the driver. I'll take care of everything else.' I was like, 'that'll work for me!'"
"I've kind of been itching a little bit to come back," he added. "I've run a couple Enduros, but this three-race schedule is just about right for me. I'm definitely looking forward to getting back in a Tiger car, and especially mixing it up with Dwayne Lanphear. Why let him have all the fun?"
The Myers Container Service Triple Crown Series will feature three 75-lap events with the first event scheduled for Capital City Auto Mart Night on Friday, June 8. Events two and three will be held on Thursday, July 12 and Thursday, August 9. A separate point fund has been posted for the top Triple Crown finishers. The events will also award points towards the 2018 Lenny's Shoe & Apparel Flying Tiger championship.

PASS Super Late Model Racers Preparing To Kick Off 2018 Season At Dillon

CHARLOTTE, NC (February 8) – Racers from across the country are busy counting down the days as the 2018 Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Model season opener at Dillon Motor Speedway draws closer. The 13th Annual South Carolina Clash 200 at Dillon on Saturday, February 24 will not only mark the beginning of the PASS National Championship Series, but it will also be the first race of the PASS South Super Late Model schedule.
Ever since the first South Carolina Clash was held at nearby Florence Motor Speedway in 2006, the event has been one of the featured races annually on the PASS schedule. Since that first Clash won by the late Charlie Bradberry, a stellar list of drivers have gone to victory lane including two-time Clash winner, Ryan Blaney, as well as Justin Wakefield, Ben Rowe, Preston Peltier, Austin Theriault, Daniel Hemric, and Tyler Church. In last year's race, Jared Irvan took advantage of a late-race restart to beat Christian Eckes to the checkered flag at the conclusion of 200 laps at Dillon.
Newly turned 17-year-old driver Kodie Conner from Kannapolis, NC is excited to return to Dillon for the 200 lapper which will begin the South's oldest Super Late Model championship. After a second place finish at Dillon in 2016, Conner was involved in an accident last year that he believes played a part in costing him the series championship.
"After last year and falling out of the race at Dillon to begin the year, it actually changed the end of the season for Team KCR," says Conner, who owns his team now following the passing of his grandfather, Jerry, in 2017. "I felt I was not able to catch up to Matt [Craig] after that. We've ran good at Dillon in the past, and as an owner-driver now, I feel we will run good there in a couple of weeks."
A former PASS Pro Late Model champion, Conner has competed the last two seasons in the Super Late Model ranks, finishing second to Matt Craig in the final standings both years. With plenty of seat time behind him and additional sponsorship support in 2018, Conner hopes not to only make a run at the PASS South title, but to compete for the PASS National Championship as well.
"This season is my year," says Conner. "I and my father, Shannon, have worked extremely hard and we believe we can continue to compete with teams that have a bigger budget than we do. I'm definitely excited about this upcoming season with the PASS series."
All the action gets under way on Friday, February 23 at Dillon Motor Speedway with open practice for all competing divisions from 2 – 5 PM. On Saturday, February 24, practice will begin at 10 AM with qualifying starting at 12:30 PM for the PASS Super Late Models, SuperTrucks, and U-Cars/FWD, followed by main events starting at approximately 2 PM.

The 2018 racing season at Speedway 51 Powered by the Autosaver Group has a jam packed schedule full of entertainment for the entire family. The return to weekly competition for the North Country Ford Late Model class has fans buzzing in anticipation as they are truly looking forward to seeing the ACT type Late Models on a regular basis.
Not only will the Late Models run weekly, Speedway 51 will be hosting a pair of American Canadian Tour Late Model events. This will mark the return of the ACT Tour for the first time in two years. Those two events will be held on Saturday night, June 2 as Caron Fabrication of Groveton sponsors the 151 lap event. The second ACT Tour event will be on Saturday night, July 14th as JP Sicard Inc, and Kingdom Gravel and Aggregates of Barton, Vermont will sponsor the 151 lap event.
Another major 2018 event will be the return of the Pro Allstars Series Super Late Models, and PASS Mods. The sleek PASS Super Late Models will burn up the ¼ mile bullring at blazing speeds. The PASS Mods will join them. Creative Counters from Lyndonville, Vermont will be the headlining sponsors for this high energy event.
Moms of Lancaster will host the downtown Groveton Car Show on Saturday, May 12th, with the Moms of Lancaster opening up the season at 6pm. Saturday, May 26th will feature the NAPA Spectacular Military night.
Saturday June 30th will see the 4th of July weekend celebration which will include a Late Model 100 lap main event, and a giant fireworks display that will wrap up the night, all powered by the Autosaver Group.
There is a new Series between Thunder Road and Speedway 51, and that is the all new, four race, Street Stock Series. There will be two races at each track. The Series is sponsored by Moms of Lancaster.

The 51st season of continuous action at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval is taking shape as the promotional team at Peterborough Speedway gets ready for the 2018 schedule. A rain-free silver anniversary campaign may have set the mark of perfection for the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City, track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse says everyone will be doing their part to create a memorable schedule.
"Obviously there is nothing we can do about the weather, but there are things we can control," Josiasse said. "The gates are scheduled to open Victoria Day weekend and our staff and officials will be ready to maintain the high level of customer satisfaction that we established during the 2017 schedule."
Peterborough Speedway will once again offer fans 5 regular classes of weekly action; plus, special guest divisions throughout the year. The entry level 4Fun group has been rebranded as Bone Stock, with the Thunder Cars working under the Super Stock banner. Mini Stock, Renegade Truck and Late Model classes will remain unchanged.
After capturing the Renegade Truck championship a year ago, Tim Burke announced plans to move to the Super Stock division. The veteran racer from Bancroft, Ontario – who has also logged laps with the OSCAAR Modified and Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series – will hope to contend for the track title with the new car and says he'll likely run both machines for at least part of the new season.
Home track Super Stock teams will have the chance to set their eyes on a bigger prize in 2018. Saturday, June 9thPeterborough Speedway will host a qualifying event for the Canadian Short Track Nationals, to be staged Labour Day Weekend at Jukasa Motor Speedway. Full event details will be available at the track.
"These crews work as hard anyone else in the pit area and they deserve the chance to play on the biggest stages available," Josiasse said. "As a promoter, we're supposed to be impartial; but it would thrill me to see one of our regulars holding the trophy in victory lane."

JP Motorsports Announces its 2018 Pro All Stars Series Schedule

Temperatures here at home are still a bit chilly, but JP Motorsports is getting ready heat things up as they hit the road for the 2018 Pro All Stars Racing Series tour. From their Ennismore, Ontario home base, driver J.P. Josiasse and the team are looking forward to getting the new season underway.
"We're always excited to get to the first race of the year; especially when it takes us away from the cold weather," Josiasse said. "We've been working hard to get things ready for the season opener. It takes a lot of effort, but the crew and I know it'll all be worthwhile when load the car into the hauler and hit the highway."
The car that will take JP Motorsports into the 2018 campaign is affectionately known as 'Clare'. It's the same Port City Chassis that the #24J team introduced at the second race of last year, with a 6thplace finish in the final point standings and a pair of 8th place finishes in 8 starts. With another year of action in the highly competitive series under his belt, Josiasse is confident that they'll get the year off to a strong start.
"Our group is having fun. We've made some new friends and we're learning how to get the most from our equipment," the driver admitted, during a break at the team's shop. "That's what this sport has always been about and its what keeps us coming back."
For the 2018 season, JP Motorsports will carry sponsorship support from The Old Smoke House, Stoneridge Specialty Insurance, AR Bodies, APT Transport, Kawartha Outdoor Décor, Kirkey Racing and Impact Safety Equipment. The team is also looking for additional marketing partners for the upcoming season.

Barre, VT – Thunder Road officials announced today that they have signed a multi-year agreement with Maplewood Convenience Stores and Irving Oil to become the entitlement sponsors of the Thunder Road Late Model division. The agreement runs through the 2020 season and includes full naming rights to the track's top auto racing class.
The Maplewood/Irving Late Models have been the lead division at Thunder Road since 1992 when the division was created. They were known at the time as the Late Model Sportsmen. The division competes under American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model rules.
The addition of Maplewood and Irving marks the first time since 1998 that the Late Models have had a title sponsor. Maplewood previously sponsored the Late Model Semi-Feature and Triple Crown program from 2015 to 2017.
"We at Maplewood, along with our friends from Irving Oil, are so pleased with this new partnership," Maplewood owner Wayne Lamberton said. "We anxiously await spring and the kick-off to this great new relationship at the 'Nation's Site of Excitement'."
Maplewood Convenience Store is a locally-owned business with locations in Berlin, South Barre, and Waterbury. The Maplewood Vermont Travelers Service Center in Berlin, a public/private partnership to provide information and services, is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Irving Oil is a multinational energy company that specializes in fuel oil and natural gas. They operate Irving Oil Refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick and own or franchise more than 900 gas stations throughout New England and Eastern Canada. All Maplewood Convenience Store locations offer Irving gasoline, diesel fuel, and other products.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 30, 2018) – NASCAR today announced key leadership appointments across its growing international business landscape and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Jim Cassidy has been named to the new leadership position of Chief International Officer, reporting into Steve O'Donnell, Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer. Charged with growing the NASCAR brand of racing internationally, Cassidy will oversee all international competition and commercial operations, building on the success of NASCAR's three international series with the NASCAR Pinty's Series in Canada, NASCAR PEAK Mexico Series and NASCAR Whelen Euro Series.
"Jim brings nearly two decades of racing operations and industry leadership experience. He has worked tirelessly to grow our existing motorsports properties outside of the U.S and will lead our efforts to identify important growth opportunities internationally for our sport and its growing fanbase," said O'Donnell.
