Time Running Out for Championship Contenders

 

From the start of the season, the championship points battle has seemed to be a two-horse race.  While Andrew Ranger and Kevin Lacroix have been the class of the field, defending champion L.P. Dumoulin and Alex Tagliani have done enough to keep themselves in the running. But with only four races remaining, time is running out for one of them to make a move.

 

Ranger and Lacroix have spent the entire season one-two in the standings, having swapped the points lead after each of the first six races. If history is any indication, this could be the weekend they separate from the pack – the two have seven combined wins at CTMP, including five of the last seven races.

 

Coincidentally, the other two winners in that span are Dumoulin and Tagliani, who just about need to reach victory lane to stay in the title hunt past Sunday.

 

Typically, the Western Swing to Saskatoon and Edmonton can define a driver's championship push. With three races in four days, opportunities are aplenty to gain points.  If Ranger emerges as the 2019 champion, he can point to his two wins there as the defining moment. He went out west with a 2 point lead and returned up 18.

 

But Dumoulin also kickstarted his season with a win in the first Saskatoon race. Since then he has exploded with a win and four top fives. He has gone from 30 points back after Edmonton to an easily fixable 17 points back.

 

It has helped that Ranger has hit a bit of a slide in the last two races, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. That has allowed Lacroix, Dumoulin and even Tagliani to tighten the gap heading into the homestretch of the season.

 

Tagliani was seemingly out of the championship running, 44 points back after Edmonton. But two straight podium finishes have helped the defending race winner gain back 11 points. Anything short of a win at CTMP could end Tagliani's shot at this year's title. 

 

Trouble at CTMP could be impactful in the standings. With 25 cars entered, any poor run can result in a massive points loss.

 

Four drivers enter CTMP in the title hunt, who will emerge entering the final three races?

 

 

Canadian Flavour in the Gander Trucks

 

Canadian fans will see five of their homegrown heroes take on the tricky CTMP road course in the Gander Outdoors Truck Series. Alex Tagliani will make his debut with Kyle Busch Motorsports in the No. 51 Toyota. Tagliani has run the event four prior times, with two starts for each Brad Keselowski Racing and Young's Motorsports. Tagliani scored two pole positions for BKR, and a best finish of fifth. This year may be as good an opportunity for a win in one of NASCAR's main three series as Tagliani has ever had.

 

Gary Klutt with make his third attempt at the race, this time for championship contending team Niece Motorsports. Klutt has a best finish of 11th for KBM in 2016.

 

Canadian phenom Raphael Lessard ran GP3R to prepare himself for his first road course start in a truck, piloting the No.54 FRL Express Toyota for DGR Crosley.  Lessard has 4 starts this season with a best finish of 9th at Iowa. 

 

Sun Peaks, B.C native Jason White, who stepped away from Pinty's Series competition in July after his 100th career start, will attempt his third Gander Trucks race.

 

Full-time Gander Trucks driver and Playoff contender Stewart Friesen hails from Niagara-on-the-Lake.

 

 

Chandler Smith to Make Pinty's Series Debut

 

The NASCAR Pinty's Series has seen a plethora of drivers from the States make their debuts in preparation for the August Gander Trucks race. Noah Gragson, Riley Herbst, Kaz Grala and James Buescher are just a handful of drivers who trekked North. 

 

This week 17-year-old ARCA Menard's Series standout Chandler Smith will be the next American standout to try his hand at Canada's top series, in preparation for a potential run in the Gander Trucks in 2020. He will pilot the No.26 Quick Wick/ 828 Logistics Chevrolet for 22 Racing.

 

The Talking Rock, Georgia native has 6 wins in 18 starts in the ARCA Menard's Series and a pole in his Gander Trucks debut at Iowa.

Fans in Canada can live stream Gander Trucks Playoff race this weekend

 

Fans in Canada can watch Sunday's NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Playoffs race via a live stream on NASCAR.com.

 

The race, which is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET, will be available for Canadian fans athttps://www.nascar.com/trucksincanada/. Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio have the radio calls. Fans in the United States can watch on FS1.

 

Prior to the Gander Trucks race, fans in both Canada and the United States can watch the NASCAR Pinty's Series race live beginning at 11 a.m. TSN subscribers can watch on TSN.ca or the TSN app, while American fans can watch live on FansChoice.tv.

 

After opening the Playoffs last year, the 2019 race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park serves as the second race in the opening Round of 8.

 

In years past fans have often seen last-lap contact when battling for the win. Last year it was Noah Gragson getting into teammate Todd Gilliland — spinning them both out — near the final corner.

 

Defending series champion Brett Moffitt leads the eight-driver playoff field into Canada, and he's automatically advanced into the next round by virtue of his win in the postseason opener at Bristol.  Veteran Johnny Sauter currently holds the last transfer spot, sitting three points above Austin Hill and 13 points above Tyler Ankrum on the cutline.

 

The Playoff field will be trimmed to six following the third race of the Round 8, Sept. 13 at Las Vegas.

Milverton, ON – Wednesday August 21, 2019:  A busy weekend is in store for the 22 Racing team as they will be fielding four entries in the Total Quartz 200 NASCAR Pinty's Series race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
 
Event number ten on the 13-race schedule takes place starting on Saturday August 24th with practice and qualifying and on Sunday August 25th when they will share race day with the NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series. 
 
"It will definitely be busy here with four teams but we are excited to add Chandler to our great team of drivers this weekend," said team owner Scott Steckly.  "It is always a great event when we pair up with the truck series and we look forward to seeing all the fans in attendance."
 
Alex Tagliani driver of the #18 Rona/EpiPen entry will look to add another win here at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park after his first checkered flag came here last year on this weekend.  Tagliani will be busy as he is pulling double duty with his #18 car in the Pinty's Series and the #51 truck in the Gander Outdoor Truck Series.
 
Marc-Antoine Camirand driver of the #22 GM Paille Chevrolet looks to get back on the podium here this weekend.  He has ten career starts at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park with two top 5 finishes, including a best 2nd place finish in 2018. 
 
Donald Theetge driver of the #24 Mercedes-Benz St Nicholas/Circuit Acura car looks to improve on his 13th place finish earlier in the year here.  Theetge has three previous starts here with one top ten finish and currently sits 8th in the National Championship standings.
 
Chandler Smith will drive the #26 Qwick Wick/828 Logistics entry for 22 Racing this weekend.  This will be Smith's first foray into the NASCAR Pinty's Series and his first road course event.  He has three starts this year in the NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series with his most recent race at Bristol Motor Speedway last weekend where he posted an impressive 2nd place finish.  Smith is also competing part time in the ARCA Racing Series.
 
The NASCAR Pinty's Series will start the weekend off on Saturday with practice at 1:05 p.m. followed by Driver Autograph Session at 3:15 p.m. and Qualifying at 5 p.m.  Sunday's Total Quartz 200 green flag will wave at 11:05 a.m.

What You Need to Know

  •  O Canada, this weekend the No. 51 team will head north to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for a 64-lap event on Sunday, with Canadian road-course ace Alex Tagliani behind the wheel and three Canadian companies on the side of the Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) Tundra. The Canadian has two poles, 15 laps led, one top-five and two top-10 finishes across four career NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series starts, all coming at the 2.459-mile road course north of the border. In addition to four Gander Truck Series starts, Tagliani has compiled four poles, 92 laps led, four top-five and five top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 13.0 across eight NASCAR Xfinity Series starts, all on road courses.
  • Tagliani currently competes full-time in the NASCAR Pinty's Series where he has recorded one win, one pole, 42 laps led, five top-five and seven top-10 finishes across nine starts and sits fourth in the championship standings this season. Overall across 80 career Pinty's Series starts Tagliani has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 35 top-five and 55 top-10 finishes. He led a race-high 23 laps en route to victory in last year's Pinty's Series race, which was held prior to the Gander Truck Series event, and will also be pulling double duty again Sunday.
  • Last weekend at Bristol, Toyota Racing Development protégé Chandler Smith earned a second-place finish in the iBUYPOWER Tundra in just his third Gander Trucks start and helped the No. 51 team get off to a strong start in the owner's portion of the Round of 8. The young driver started seventh and then made his way through the field to contend for the win in the closing laps. After one race in the Round of 8, the No. 51 team is ranked third in the owner's points standings with 2064 markers, 22 above the cutoff line for advancing to the Round of 6. The No. 51 team, which has earned five wins with owner-driver Kyle Busch behind the wheel and one win with veteran driver Greg Biffle at Texas Motor Speedway, will looking to bring home the organization's seventh owner's title. Overall across 17 starts the No. 51 team has two poles, 10 top-five and 12 top-10 finishes.
  • Veteran crew chief Rudy Fugle leads the No. 51 team this season. Fugle has guided his team to four Owner's Championships (2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017) as a crew chief at KBM, including combined Owner's/Driver's Championships with Erik Jones in 2015 and Christopher Bell in 2017. The New York native's drivers have combined for 28 wins, 22 poles, 66 top-five and 102 top-10 finishes across his 130 races calling the shots for the organization. Are you excited to return to CTMP in a KBM Tundra?

"First of all, it's a fantastic opportunity. Thanks to Kyle and Rudy and the entire KBM team for the trust — driving this No. 51 very iconic truck up in Canada is really big for me. Hopefully we can bring the truck in Victory Lane and give the fans some excitement."

How does your experience at this track help you this weekend?
"Everything helps. I think the series is very competitive, they've come to that track a couple times and every team has improved their road course package. The drivers are using the simulator these days to get better at it, so knowing it and knowing all the little tricks and bits of the track, hopefully we can use it to our advantage and get a good result."

How bad do you want to get a Truck Series victory at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park?
"I've come so close so many times, I feel that track owes me a couple of wins. If we can have one in the truck it will make up for all of the bad luck that we've had. Everybody seems to be tired of second place and I am one of those guys and hopefully this weekend will be the right one."

What does it mean to race a truck in Canada sponsored by three Canadian companies?
"Timing is everything and showing up in Canada and showing up in Canada in a truck that is red, black and white and having three Canadian companies on the truck, one that has been with me for so many years, CanTorque, and they're manufacturing tools right now so great timing for that. Alex Tagliani Career Highlights

Rudolph Full Throttle at Airborne

Erick Rudolph too much for Lance Willix, passes late to win at Plattsburgh Airborne Speedway

PLATTSBURGH, NY – August 20, 2019 – Home-track hero Lance Willix II passed two of the best DIRTcar 358 Modified Series drivers Erick Rudolph and Mike Mahaney on a mid-race restart. Willix battled tooth and nail until a lap 90 red flag incident stopped the race. On the restart, Erick Rudolph got the better of No. 31 and powered on to visit Victory Lane. Tim Fuller battled hard inside the top five all race and finished on the final step of the podium. 

Erick Rudolph and Mike Mahaney brought the thirty-car field to the green flag. Mahaney got the initial jump on the outside and powered away from Rudolph. The No. 25R battled back and traded blows with Mahaney. Then on a restart, Plattsburgh regular Lance Willix II passed both of the dueling leaders in one shot. 

The No. 31 used a unique racing line where he entered the corners low and hooked the left side tires on the edge of the track. This seemed to rotate the car and allow Willix to get on the throttle earlier than Rudolph or Mahaney. 

Willix kept up his pace and maintained the lead until a dramatic incident on the front stretch brought out the red flag. 

As witnessed, Kyle Dingwalll made contact with the front stretch wall and veered in front of oncoming race traffic. Several cars, including Steve Bernier and Jessey Mueller, slid through the infield, which caused Mueller's car to flip and land on top of Bernier.

The high level of safety standards mandated by DIRTcar were put to the test and once again all drivers walked away. 

The battle at the front was far from over.

"We had a lot of time to sit there and think. I didn't know if I'd have an opportunity to pass him," said Rudolph.

Throughout the race the implement tires at the inside of the track get clipped and can change the preferred racing line depending on where they move, 

When the field went back to green on lap 90, Rudolph had to make a calculated move.

 "That tire down there was in the infield for a long time and it had everyone glued to the bottom. It moved up a bit and made the track racy again. We were able to make the move around him [Willix]," Rudolph said of his racing-winning move. 

That move made Rudolph and his team $4,000 richer. This was the second time the No. 25R has visited Victory Lane in Series competition in 2019. 

Plattsburgh still a very new track for Rudolph. 

He noted "I've only been here three times. I did a race here one time when it was asphalt. Track time helps anywhere you go."

Rudolph is heading to Cornwall Motor Speedway for their Race for the Cure 150 DIRTcar 358 Modified $12,000-to-win race on Thursday, August 22. The DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series is in action as well. 

It's not how Lance Willix II wanted this one to end but a second-place finish with the best DIRTcar 358 Modified drivers around is a great accomplishment 

"This is the way we want to end the year. On a high note. We have momentum going into these big races at the end of the year. To be able to compete with Erick and Timmy and all these guys, it means something to us," said Willix. 

Tim Fuller powered his way up to finish in third.

"I had the second-best car on the track. Erick and Lance did a really good job. It was a long race and fortunately, we ended up in the top three which is good any time you get into what of these deals," Fuller said in Victory Lane. 

The Billy Whittaker Cars Fast-Time Award winner for Plattsburgh Airborne Speedway was Steve Bernier. Unfortunately, Bernier's car was heavily damaged in the red flag melee on the front stretch resulting in a DNF. 

A driver in a randomly determined finishing position is awarded one free Hoosier Racing Tire. Michael Parent, on the virtue of finishing in seventh position, is awarded the free tire certificate from Hoosier. 

The next DIRTcar 358 Modified Series race is at Can-Am Speedway on September 7.

Deuxième podium consécutif pour Alex Tagliani en série NASCAR Pinty's



Montréal, 18 août 2019 - Alex Tagliani a réalisé sa meilleure performance sur piste ovale de la saison 2019 en terminant troisième lors de la neuvième étape de la série NASCAR Pinty's disputée samedi soir sur l'ovale d'un tiers de mille du Riverside International Speedway (RIS) situé à Antigonish, en Nouvelle-Écosse. Le pilote originaire de Lachenaie s'était élancé du septième rang du Bumper to Bumper 300, mais il s'est maintenu dans le peloton de tête tout au long de la course. Cependant, la fin dramatique de l'épreuve prévue de 300 tours lors du surtemps NASCAR lui a permis de passer au troisième rang pour terminer derrière les Ontariens D.J. Kennington et le vainqueur Jason Hathaway.


Pour Tagliani, il s'agissait d'un deuxième podium consécutif cette saison. Jason Hathaway n'a mené qu'un seul tour, le 305e et dernier, après une poussette qui a relégué Kevin Lacroix au sixième rang. Ce dernier avait été dominant en menant 195 tours. Tagliani a été suivi au fil d'arrivée par LP Dumoulin et Alex Labbé qui complètent le top cinq.


« Nous avons réalisé une superbe performance ce soir avec un deuxième podium consécutif à seulement six centièmes de seconde du deuxième rang, a déclaré Alex Tagliani après la course. Nous nous sommes battus jusqu'à la fin et nous avons presque réussi à dépasser D.J. (Kennington) au dernier tour. L'équipe 22 Racing a fait beaucoup de progrès sur la Chevrolet EpiPen-RONA-St Hubert-Spectra Premium du programme ovale. J'étais satisfait de la performance de la voiture en qualification, car un dixième de seconde séparait ma septième place sur la grille de la position de tête. C'était très positif.


« Le résultat de cette course est très prometteur pour les trois dernières épreuves sur pistes ovales de la saison. Si l'équipe peut continuer à faire des progrès sur les réglages de la voiture à chaque sortie, mes résultats seront très intéressants. Nous espérons terminer la saison en force. Ça nous prenait ce genre de résultat pour nous motiver après un début de saison difficile sur ce type de circuit.


« J'aurai un programme très chargé le weekend prochain sur le circuit routier de Mosport avec l'équipe de Kyle Busch Motorsports en série de camionnettes NASCAR Gander Outdoors et bien sûr une course très importante en NASCAR Pinty's avec la voiture numéro 18. Je crois qu'on peut espérer du succès la semaine prochaine, »  a conclu Tagliani.


Seulement 14 voitures ont pris le départ de la course, mais 12 ont croisé l'arrivée, dont neuf sur le tour du vainqueur. L'épreuve de 305 tours a été neutralisée à neuf reprises pour un total de 53 tours. Le Bumper to Bumper 300 sera diffusé sur RDS2 le vendredi 13 septembre à 22 h 30.


Au cours de ses quatre courses NASCAR Pinty's au RIS, Tagliani a terminé deux fois dans le top cinq et quatre fois dans le top 10. En 80 départs NASCAR Pinty's, Tagliani a récolté 10 poles, 9 victoires, il a terminé 35 fois dans le Top-5 et 55 dans le Top-10.


Au championnat des pilotes :
Aucun bouleversement dans le classement des pilotes, mais l'étau se resserre pour le meneur Andrew Ranger qui a terminé septième à Riverside. Ranger domine toujours avec 385 points, son écart a été réduit à 11 points sur Kevin Lacroix (374) et à 17 sur LP Dumoulin (368). En terminant devant tous ses rivaux qui le devançaient au championnat, Alex Tagliani a retranché quatre points à l'avance de Ranger sur lui. Il occupe toujours le quatrième rang avec 352 points à 33 points du meneur. D.J. Kennington est cinquième avec 328 points.

Second consecutive podium finish for Alex Tagliani in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series


Montreal, August 18, 2019 – Alex Tagliani scored his best oval track result of the 2019 season with a third place finish on Saturday night in round nine of the NASCAR Pinty's Series held on the one-third mile Riverside International Speedway (RIS) oval track in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The Quebec driver started the Bumper to Bumper 300 in seventh place and kept in touch with the leaders all race long, but the dramatic end of the scheduled 300-lap race pushed the event into NASCAR overtime where he moved into third place to cross the finish line right behind D.J. Kennington and race winner Jason Hathaway.
 
For Tagliani, this was his second consecutive podium finish of the season. Jason Hathaway from Appin, Ontario led only one lap, the 305th and last lap after returning a chrome horn bump on Kevin Lacroix that sent him down to sixth place. Lacroix had been the dominant driver leading 195 laps. Tagliani was followed at the finish line by LP Dumoulin, with Alex Labbé rounding out the top five.
 
"That was quite a performance for the 22 Racing Team tonight with a second consecutive podium finish, only six-hundredths of a second behind second place," said Tagliani after the race. "We fought hard until the end and I came so close of going by D.J. (Kennington) on the last lap. The team has made tremendous progress on the Chevrolet EpiPen-RONA-St Hubert-Spectra Premium oval car program. I was very happy with its performance in qualifying, as there was only one-tenth of a second gap between my seventh place on the grid and the polesitter. That was very positive.
 
"The result of this race is very promising for the upcoming final three oval races of the season. If the team continues to improve the car bit by bit for each of these races, the results could be very interesting. We hope to finish the season on a strong note. We needed that kind of success after a difficult start of the season on this type of track.
 
"Next week will be a very busy weekend for me at Mosport road course with a race with the Kyle Busch Motorsports Team in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series and of course a very important race in the NASCAR Pinty's Series with my number 18 car. I look forward to do very well in both races," concluded Tagliani.
 
Only 14 drivers started the RIS race with 12 crossing the finish line at the end of the Bumper to Bumper 300.  Nine cars finished on the lead lap. The 305-lap race was under full course caution nine times for a total of 53 laps. The Riverside International Speedway race will be televised on TSN on Saturday, August 24 at 1:30 p.m.
 
In his four NASCAR Pinty's races at Riverside, Tagliani has finished twice in the top five and four times in the top 10. In 80 NASCAR Pinty's starts, Tag has claimed ten poles, won 9 races, finished 35 times in the Top-5 and 55 times in the Top-10.
 
In the driver standings:
No major changes in the driver top five standings, but the noose is tightening up on leader Andrew Ranger who finished seventh at Riverside. Ranger is still leading, but gap has been reduced to 11 points over Kevin Lacroix (374) and to 17 on LP Dumoulin (368). By finishing ahead of all the rivals ahead of him in the standings, Tagliani shaved four points from Ranger's lead. He is still fourth with 352 points, 33 points back. D.J. Kennington rounds out the top five with 328 points.
 
Next stop: Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Ontario
The NASCAR Pinty's Series returns to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park famed road course in Bowmanville, Ontario for round 10 of the season the weekend of August 24. Tagliani will be a busy driver on Sunday, August 25 competing in the 51-lap NASCAR Pinty's race scheduled to start at 11:05 a.m. and then at 2:30 p.m., driving for 64 laps in the Chevrolet Silverado 250 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race at the wheel of the number 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports entry. For the truck race, CanTorque, RONA and Spectra Premium will sponsor Tagliani's Tundra.
 
The NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race will televised live on FOX Sports Racing, available on cable with Videotron (792), Bell TV (1421), Cogeco (742), Eastlink (713) and Rogers (409). Pre-race show starts at 2 p.m. Race time: 2:30 p.m.

Hometown Late Models Shine on Peterborough Speedway’s Hot August Night

Summer Toonie/Fan Appreciation Nights – presented by Pepsi – are well-known for packing-in the crowds at Peterborough Speedway. Throw a 50 lap Late Model feature into the mix; along with the local Bone Stock, Renegade Truck and Super Stock divisions and the travelling Ontario Pro Challenge teams and you get a great evening of family motorsports entertainment for just a $2.00 admission ticket. Saturday, August 17th the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road pulled out all the stops for a thrilling night of racing excitement.


Each year, the weekly divisions get the chance to run extra distance feature events and the Late Models took their turn in the spotlight as Tim Batty and Mark Gordon brought the pack to the line. Gordon jumped out to an early lead, with Batty fighting back on the bottom before Jeff Walt moved into the 2nd spot. Slower traffic became an issue with just over a handful of laps complete, with last week's winner and defending track champion Dan McHattie slipping into 3rd with 16 laps on the board. The race's only yellow flag waved for a lap 19 issue on the backstretch. McHattie took 2nd on the restart and was leading just a few laps later. With as much as a half track advantage, the hometown favourite took control of the field while Dave Morgan and Jeff Walt fought over 2nd and 3rd in his rear view mirror. At the checkered flag, the #71 machine had logged another win. Gordon was 4th, with Tim Batty 5th.


Alex McGibbon and Paul Boundy brought the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck field from the staging area for their 20 lap feature tilt. McGibbon used the inside line to perfection, taking the lead but Brad Lavalle was pushing hard for a turn at the front. The pair bumped a couple of times, but Lavalle couldn't muscle his way into the lead. McGibbon protected the bottom groove all the way and didn't even give-up the lead while working through lapped traffic. The caution-free feature came to an end with the entire field slipping and sliding around the track after a truck hit the first turn wall with just a lap remaining. Officials called the race complete at 19 of the 20 laps. McGibbon celebrated in victory lane while hooked to the tow truck. Lavalle, Boundy, Stacy Switzer and Jeff Dolley were credited with the next 4 positions.


With teams looking for every possible advantage in the point standings, front row starters Paul Boundy and Marlie Owen paced the KOD Disposal Super Stock starting grid to the Great Canadian RV green flag. Owen showed her strength early, taking the lead from the outside line but her position at the front was short-lived as Tim Burke took over the top spot with just 3 laps on the board. Tyler Betts – taking another turn in Howie Crowe's #28 – was pressing for the runner-up spot, but Owen held-off the charge. With Burke running away with things out in front, Owen, Betts and Mark Gordon were involved in a 3 car fight for 2nd. That's the way the caution-free Super Stock feature finished, with Boundy taking the 5th spot.


Kyle Novis and Isaiah Switzer showed the way as the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock field came to the line. The initial green flag was brief, as a multi-car wreck on the backstretch brought things to a halt and eliminated 4 of the original starters. Steve Finnegan took the lead on the restart, with a 3 car breakaway back to Sean Kennedy who was running 4th. Defending track champion Ryan Oosterholt was looking for the second spot as the pack caught the tail-end of the field at about the three-quarter mark. After a rocky start, things went from green to checkered without another slowdown. Finnegan earned the win, over Oosterholt, Novis, Kennedy and Kris Khan.


The Ontario Pro Challenge Series ran a pair of 'A' main events. Tim Norris picked-up the win in the opening round, over Bryan Stevanus, Michael Norris, Peter Hattin and Adam Tyo. In the second feature, it was Tim Norris, Stevanus, Michael Norris, Tyo and Hattin.


Qualifying events for the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks went to Bill O'Hara, Terri-Anne Whittern, Brad Lavalle and Alex McGibbon. Tyler Betts scored a pair of KOD Disposal Super Stock heat wins, with the others going to Marlie Owen and Mark Gordon. The 6 Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock preliminary rounds were shared by Corey Strawn, Kyle Hope, Isaiah Switzer, Kris Khan, Ryan Oosterholt and Sean Kennedy. Late Model heats were won by Dan McHattie, Tim Batty, Mark Gordon and Jeff Walt.


All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post race safety and technical inspection.


Bullring bullet points: A strong Summer Toonie Night crowd meant a solid 50/50 payoff of nearly $795.00 to Peterborough's Lori Bond-Smith…Former Late Model feature winner Bryan Mercer and his family were in the stands, as was Brian Goudge, a past track announcer – who went by the name "Motor Mouth" – at Brockville and Capital City Speedways…Phil Jessup joined the Late Model field in his #44 car. Dave Morgan made his second straight start in the family-owned #10 Late Model, filling-in for his son Jack who was in a fishing tournament…Dan McHattie slowed to a stop on the infield pit lane, after losing a crank pulley during the 2nd Late Model inversion qualifier. He borrowed one from another competitor to make the main event starting grid. McHattie gave the winner's trophy to Bobby Cousineau and his family to say thanks for their generosity.


The Hot August Nights Racing Series at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval continues Saturday, August 24th with the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, KOD Disposal Super Stock and Late Model divisions; plus double feature events for the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series, with Kid's Barrel Races as the intermission attraction. Pits open at 2:30, with general admission grandstand gates unlocked at 5:00 and racing at 6:00.

College Athletes Selected to Join NASCAR Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development Program

Top-Performing Athletes to Train with Rev Racing Beginning in September; Will Look to Join More than 50 Program Graduates Now Working in NASCAR

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 20, 2019) – Following the thorough evaluation of athletes from universities across the country, NASCAR and Rev Racing have chosen seven participants to join the 2019-20 NASCAR Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development Program.

 

The former collegiate athletes were selected based on a fitness assessment held in May at the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C. The assessment tested their agility, strength and flexibility, followed by the participants learning the different crew member positions during a pit stop simulation.

 

Those selected will relocate to Charlotte, N.C. for a six-month pit crew training program led by Phil Horton, Rev Racing's director of athletic performance. They will train to become tire changers, carriers and jackmen, with hopes of one day earning a spot on a national series race team.

 

NASCAR Drive for Diversity provides opportunities for women and minorities to pursue career opportunities in NASCAR on pit crews, in the driver's seat through the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Driver Development Program and off the track through the NASCAR Diversity Internship Program.

 

"We are inspired by the level of athletes we're seeing enter the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development Program," said Jusan Hamilton, Director, Racing Operations and Event Management, NASCAR. "With a wider range of colleges and universities partnering with NASCAR and Rev Racing on this program, the talent pool continues to expand and so does the pathway for each of the new members to achieve success with top race teams."

 

Dalanda Ouendeno is among this year's NASCAR Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development Program participants. Ouendeno was a standout defender on the University of Miami women's soccer team before trying out for a pit crew development role with Rev Racing.

Virginia natives Hadji Gaylord and Raynard Revels will also join the 2019-20 class after competing together as teammates on Norfolk State University's football team.

 

"We look forward to welcoming this year's class to NASCAR's most comprehensive pit crew training and development program," said Max Siegel, CEO of Rev Racing. "We couldn't be prouder of the journey both our pit crew development program and graduates have taken from its inception. With the expansion of our recruiting efforts across the country, the talent level rises, and our program continues to evolve and create more opportunities for advancement at a higher level."

 

In July 2019, NASCAR Drive for Diversity Pit Crew Development Program graduates Rojelio Ramirez, Omar Grimaldo and current program member Michael Hayden celebrated their first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win when driver Justin Haley took the checkered flag at the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

 

Through the years, the program has developed pit crew athletes who work on teams every race weekend. Since its inception, more than 100 athletes have participated in the program and more than 65 graduates have worked in the sport on the national level. More than 50 graduates are currently pitting on a national level and more than 30 are competing in the sport's top series, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

As the 2019 Regular Season at Peterborough Speedway Winds Down…

It seems like this year's schedule at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval got underway just a couple of weeks ago, but with only 2 shows remaining in the regular season, teams in Peterborough Speedway's Saturday night classes will be pulling-out all the stops to gain any possible advantage in the championship fight.


Central Ontario's favourite short track racing destination comes back to life Saturday, August 24th with the hometown Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, KOD Disposal Super Stock and Late Model divisions; plus double features for the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series and Kid's Barrel Races as the intermission attraction. Pit gates open at 2:30, with the general admission grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and racing at 6:00.


Everywhere you look, there are tight point battles as action heads gets closer to the Saturday, August 31st Championship Clash. Unofficially, there is less than a 50 point margin between Corey Strawn, Chris Tubman and Sean Kennedy in the Bone Stock title fight. Ironically, Strawn – who leads the standings – has yet to win a main event. On the subject of wins, Tim Burke's checkered flag last weekend has turned the Super Stock battle into a real dog-fight between himself, Mark Gordon, Howie Crowe and Marlie Owen. Former Bone Stock champion Jeremy Kelly looks to be the heir apparent to the 2019 Mini Stock crown, but rivals Nolan Gould and Ember Junkin – an early season feature winner – could have something to say about the outcome.


With a win in the recent 50 lap feature Cavan, Ontario's Dan McHattie looks to have all but clinched another Late Model championship, while the #26 Renegade Truck – shared by drivers Brad Lavalle and Nicholas Ledson – is the front runner in the pick-up parade. Track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse says it's a good time to be a fan at Peterborough Speedway.


"Our teams are always committed to giving our supporters the best show possible, but the championship battles will kick the level of excitement up a notch," Josiasse said. "Every lap and just a single position in the running order could make a big difference."
