Sean Kennedy is Working Toward a Strong 2020 Season

Its never too early to start working toward a possible short track championship season. After his 3rd straight top 3 finish and 5th consecutive top 5 in Peterborough Speedway's Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock division point standings, Sean Kennedy is ready to take the next step.

 

"I've always been confident in the things this team can achieve," admitted the driver. "We never stop working. At the track and behind the scenes, we're always thinking about changes we can make to the car. All it'll take is a little racing luck and being in the right place at the right time to be able to put it all together."

 

Like so many of today's young racers, Sean Kennedy's rise through the ranks began in go karts – winning numerous season and class championships – before making the transition to stock cars. Combined with the unwavering support of his family and friends, Kennedy's calm, calculated driving style helped introduce the 24-year-old from Courtice, Ontario to a new legion of fans and paid-off with multiple trips to the winner's circle for qualifying event victories and feature race checkered flags.

 

"Even from my early days in the sport, being at the track has always been a lot of fun," said Sean Kennedy. "I've met some incredible people along the way. I'm very thankful to have had so many wonderful opportunities and made some life-long friends throughout the different stages of my career. I've received offers and the chance to do other things, but I can't think of many places I'd rather be or anything I'd prefer to do. Every new race season is like a special Saturday night spent with my extended family."

 

Heading into the first green flag of the 2020 season – Saturday, May 16th – Kennedy and the #9 team have been fine-tuning the ride that took the driver to last year's 3rd place finish in the overall standings. They're also looking to land some additional sponsorship support to join the perennial championship calibre program that during the 2019 campaign included Apex Auto – Oshawa, Sign Works Graphics, Sparta Drilling Group, Central Golf Carts and Clarke Motorsports Communications.

Two different winners in two nights highlight the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds at Volusia

BARBERVILLE, FL — Feb. 5, 2020 — The "High Side Tickler" Kyle Strickler powered his UMP Modified into the lead on the second night of the DIRTcar Nationals presented by Bozard Ford on Wednesday at Volusia Speedway Park, survived several restarts and cut off defending event champion Nick Hoffman in the final corner for a hard-earned victory.

"The car was really balanced on the top or the bottom so I could move around a little bit," said Strickler, 35, of Mooresville, NC. "But clean air is so important here, so we went up to the top like we do sometimes, and we were able to stay out front. The worst thing you want to see here at Volusia is that blue nose (Nick Hoffman) creeping up on you. But we were able to stay out front, stayed up top and here we are."

It was the seventh DIRTcar Nationals victory of Strickler's career, moving him into a tie for fourth all-time in career wins with 2007 champion Steve Arpin.

Opening night winner Michael Long and Strickler brought the stacked 28-car field to the green flag in the 20-lap Feature. Long maintained the momentum on the inside lane to edge out ahead of Strickler. However, Strickler never let Long stray too far out front and on Lap 5 Strickler powered to the lead. He brought David Stremme, who started third, with him and the battle was on between the two rivals.

Strickler stuck his machine on the cushion left behind by the Sprint Car Feature earlier in the evening, and as he has done so often throughout his career, utilized that top lane to his advantage and began pulling away from Stremme and the rest of the field. Four-time and defending champion Hoffman, who started eighth, was able to slip past Stremme and set his sights on Strickler, but Strickler had built up a big enough lead to keep Hoffman and the rest of the pack safely behind him.

Hoffman settled for second as Stremme was third, Long fourth and Jason Hughes in fifth. Zeke McKenzie, for the second night in a row, had to come through a Last Chance Showdown and after starting 25th, worked his way up to an eighth place showing.

Night #3 of the 49th DIRTcar Nationals on Thursday, Feb. 6, also includes the second night of racing for the Ollie's Bargain Outlet All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars presented by Mobil 1.

Track Management Looking Forward to Exciting 2020 Season

PLATTSBURGH, NY (February 7, 2020) – The new Airborne Speedway management team of Lyle DeVore and Mike Perrotte are pleased to announce the Super DIRTcar Big Block Series will be making their 2020 appearance at the track.

Teams and fans need to mark their calendars for Tuesday, August 18 and be ready for the roar of the big block engines as they come alive at the four-tenths mile dirt oval.

Just two weeks ago it was announced Airborne Speedway would be operating in 2020.  That was followed by an informational meeting, attended by approximately 150 drivers, owners and officials, where they were told there would be several announcements in the near future regarding the schedule and other items.

Today the first such announcement was made by DeVore who made it known the DIRTcar Series event will be a 100-lap feature that will pay $7,500 to win, $1,000 for 10th and $500 to start.

"We anticipate that not only will those drivers who follow the DIRTcar Series, such as 2019 Series champion Mat Williamson, be on hand, but many others as well.  That would include drivers who run eastern New York tracks such as Albany-Saratoga, Lebanon Valley, Utica-Rome and Fonda," stated DeVore, "…and we've also heard from several drivers from Canada who are interested."

Fans can expect to see the best of the best dirt Modified drivers in the Northeast as DIRTcar Series regulars such as Matt Sheppard, Billy Decker, Erick Rudolph, Paul St-Sauveur, Jimmy Phelps and 2019 event winner Larry Wight converge on the four-tenths mile dirt oval.

Add to that group eastern New York favorites such as Demetrios Drellos, Jessey Mueller, Mike Maresca, Tim Fuller, Jack Lehner and several local track favorites and you have the  makings of an exciting side-by-side highly competitive event.

The August 18th date means the DIRTcar Series drivers will be down to the wire in their point battle for the Super DIRTcar Series title, making the Airborne Speedway race date a vital one for all concerned.

Also in action that night will be the highly competitive DIRTcar Pro Stock class.  Grandstand prices will be $26 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 12.  The grandstand gates will tentatively open at 3 p.m. with racing to begin at 6 p.m.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 6, 2020) – NASCAR announced today several leadership promotions across the breadth of its business. Ben Kennedy has been promoted Vice President, Racing Development; John Martin has been promoted to Vice President, Media and Event Technology; Patrick Rogers has been promoted to Vice President, Marketing Services; and Chris Schwartz has been promoted to Vice President, Media Properties. 

 

Kennedy oversees strategic racing development initiatives for each of NASCAR's series, including development of future national series' schedules and international expansion. Having competed in both the NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series, as well as previously serving as General Manager of the Truck Series, Kennedy plays a key role in working with NASCAR senior leadership to develop long term racing development strategies.  Kennedy will remain based in Concord and will continue to report into Steve O'Donnell, Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer.

Rogers has led the sanctioning body's collaborative marketing work with race teams and drivers and will take that work to another level with his new, broader duties. Schwartz will be based in Charlotte and will report into Brian Herbst, Senior Vice President, Media and Productions.

Annual class will now consist of three inductees; Honors Committee to evaluate pioneers

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 5, 2020) — NASCAR today announced changes to the NASCAR Hall of Fame nomination and induction processes, including reducing the annual number of inductees from five to three and splitting potential nominees into two ballots – one for contemporary stars and one for the sport's pioneers.

 

Starting with the upcoming Class of 2021, the existing Nomination Committee will provide 10 nominees for the Modern Era Ballot.  A new Honors Committee – largely comprised of all living Hall of Famers, Landmark Award winners and Squier-Hall Award winners – will evaluate and provide five nominees for the Pioneer Ballot. The Voting Panel will meet in Charlotte on Wednesday, May 20 to debate, discuss and ultimately vote for the three-member Class of 2021 – two from the Modern Era Ballot and one from the Pioneer Ballot. All three are inducted equally, there will be no distinction between inductees from either ballot.

 

Competitors are eligible for the Modern Era Ballot if their career started within the past 60 years (1961 for Class of 2021). Nominees can stay on the Modern Era Ballot for up to 10 years. Those whose careers began more than 60 years ago or who have been on the Modern Era Ballot for 10 years will be eligible for the Pioneer Ballot.

 

"When we opened the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010, we had to catch up on more than 60 years of NASCAR history," said NASCAR President Steve Phelps. "Our plan has always been to evaluate the process as the Hall of Fame matured. With 55 of the sport's greatest competitors enshrined, we felt the time was right to move to three inductees which will help maintain the high standard of enshrinement that's been set."

 

"From the time I first learned of the selection process NASCAR developed in 2009 and through the evolutions implemented as we gained valuable experience, I have been a huge proponent of our process," said NASCAR Hall of Fame Executive Director Winston Kelley. "I feel our process is as strong as any Hall of Fame, sport and entertainment alike. I am equally enthusiastic about these changes to our process and concur wholeheartedly that now is the right time to transition to fewer inductees and establish a process dedicated to NASCAR's iconic pioneers."

 

Twelve representatives from the Honors Committee, including seven new voters – Richard Childress, Rick Hendrick, Ron Hornaday Jr., Dale Jarrett, Roger Penske, Darrell Waltrip and Rusty Wallace – will serve on the Voting Panel.

 

Changes have also been made to crew chief eligibility to align it with driver eligibility. In addition to the requirement to participate in NASCAR for 10 years, crew chiefs must now also be retired for two years. Competitors with 30 years NASCAR experience and those aged 55 or higher are also eligible.

TORONTO, ON // JANUARY 30, 2020 • Building on the success of last year's inaugural Motorama Mayhem… in the Backroom, for 2020, the 'show within a show' at the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo will move to Hall 4 of Toronto's International Centre in order to accommodate a significantly increased car count. The show takes place March 13, 14 & 15 at the venue across from Pearson Airport.

"In our first year, Mayhem… in the Backroom had 38 vehicles on display. This year we should have at least 60," explained Brandon Roberts, coordinator of the Mayhem exhibit.

Roberts continued, "All the vehicles on display are traditionally-inspired hot rods and custom cars; vehicles you would have seen cruising the streets in the 1960s. Some of these cars would have cost $100,000 to build, others, only $3,000. That cross-section of cars is what makes Mayhem so exceptional, every Motorama visitor will find a vehicle they can identify with."

These ladies will be coordinating and hosting the ZEHR Stage production of the 2nd Annual Motorama Mayhem Pinup Pageant.

Over the course of the weekend, continual music will be supplied by DJ Swankenstein, with local bands The Dreamboats and the Hell Bent Rockers, plus American combo Mag and the Netos, taking over the ZEHR Insurance Mayhem stage for a Saturday evening concert. Mark Malibu and the Wasagas will provide the entertainment for the Friday evening VIP / Car Owners' Cocktail Party, with the Green Reflectors – travelling from Nova Scotia to play Motorama – closing out the show with a pair of Sunday afternoon sets.

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – The spotlight will shine on local stock car racing's "little guy" teams in 2020.  The all-new "Six Pack Series" has been created for intermediate-level, V8-powered stock cars, with six races at four distinctly different tracks in Vermont and New York's Capital District.

Significant efforts have been made by each of the four speedways to work toward a more uniform set of rules to oversee similar divisions.  The tracks and classes involved are the Super Stocks at Devil's Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt., the Street Stocks at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y., the Street Stocks at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park in Fultonville, N.Y., and the Pure Stocks at Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon, N.Y.  Drivers must declare which track's rulebook they will race under for the Six Pack Series.

The Six Pack cracks open on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10, at the high-banked, quarter-mile Glen Ridge bullring.  The semi-banked, half-mile Devil's Bowl facility will host the second round on Memorial Day weekend on Sunday, May 24, followed by events at the banked 4/10-mile Albany-Saratoga on Friday, June 12, and the fast, 5/8-mile Lebanon Valley high-banks on Saturday, June 27.

Devil's Bowl will host its second event during the Interstate All Battery Center Vermont 200 Weekend over the Labor Day holiday on Saturday, September 5, and the inaugural Six Pack Series champion will be crowned at Albany-Saratoga during the Malta Massive Weekend on Friday, September 25.

The intermediate, hobby-level class is well-known for its side-by-side action and even for its wild crashes.  Primarily based on the 1980s-era Chevrolet Monte Carlo, the division harkens back to a bygone period of racing that longtime fans fondly remember and that newer fans quickly fall in love with.

"The Six Pack Series is a really exciting concept and the new rules should make for some great racing at all the tracks," said Devil's Bowl champion Scott FitzGerald. "It's great that the tracks are all working together, and the thought of being able to race on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights with the same car reminds me of the way things were 30 years ago. My team is really looking forward to the challenge."

The Full-Fendered Frenzy of DIRTcar Pro Stock Series Racing Returns with an Eleven-Race Schedule

CONCORD, NC – January 28, 2020 – DIRTcar Northeast's only full-fendered racing division returns in 2020, with an exciting array of DIRTcar Pro Stock Series action. A total of 11 Feature races and 10 premier dirt race tracks make up the Series schedule in 2020 across the Northeast and Canada. 

2019 champion C.D. Beauchamp indicated that he would return to the Series in 2020 to defend his title. At the annual DIRTcar Awards banquet, C.D. took home over $2,000 for his Pro Stock title.

That title defense begins at the multi-grooved Autodrome Granby on Friday, June 19. The last time the DIRTcar Pro Stock Series stopped into the Quebec autodrome, in 2018, Bruno Cyr took the checkered flag. 

Next up is the high-banked bullring of Cornwall Motor Speedway. 2019 DIRTcar Pro Stock Series champion C.D. Beauchamp started his 2019 season with a win at Cornwall. Will he make it a repeat or will the stars from both sides of the border take home the checkered flag?

It's a special back to back weekend for the Series, with Lebanon Valley Speedway and Glen Ridge Motorsports Park Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26.  This will be a unique test indeed, as Lebanon is arguably the biggest track on the tour while Glen Ridge is the smallest.  

With a talented group of weekly teams, Lebanon Valley boasts some of the biggest Pro Stock car counts in the DIRTcar circuit.  It will be a battle when Series travelers from all over the Northeast and Canada come to town.

The DIRTcar Pro Stock Series will make its second-ever attempt to race at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park in Fultonville, NY. The Series was scheduled there once before but was forced to cancel due to rain. Drivers are excited to finally take on this track this season on Sunday, July 26. 

Along with sanctioning DIRTcar Pro Stocks in the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship, Can-Am Speedway plays host to a Series race on Friday, September 11. The Series hopes to complete its first race at The Nasty Track since Louie Jackson took the checkered flag in 2008. 

The following day, Saturday, September 12, the Series hauls over to Weedsport Speedway to take part in the first Cavalcade Cup Weekend along with the Super DIRTcar Series and more. Last season Josh Coonradt won a thriller on this Central New York oval. 

The Pro Stocks get back to it on Saturday, September 19 at Mohawk Int'l Raceway in Akwesasne, NY. Sid Harmer Jr. shocked the field in 2019, by picking up the Series win there. A week later, Albany-Saratoga Speedway and their talented group of weekly racers will clash on the Malta, NY oval. The Super DIRTcar Series will also be on hand with a $10,000-to-win showdown NAPA Super DIRT Week Qualifier. 

Speaking of the greatest week in racing, the DIRTcar Pro Stocks will contest the Oswego Speedway for 50 laps on Sunday, October 11. The Pro Stocks have always put on great shows during NAPA Super DIRT Week, but since moving to Oswego Speedway, the racing has reached another an even higher level. It's a can't-miss race on the schedule. 

The season wraps up at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, Thursday through Saturday, October 29-31, as a part of the DRIVEN World Short Track Championship. Competitors will face off on the biggest stage in dirt racing in two Features plus Heat Races and Time Trials.
