Scarborough wins sportsman, Terry rebounds in renegades


PLATTSBURGH, NY. -- Joey Scarborough won Saturday's 30-lap J&S Steel Sportsman Feature over Nick Heywood and Travis Bruno. The first busy Saturday night of the 2024 schedule produced 11 winners on the night, with Pro Stocks, Mod Lites, and Vintage cars all being added to the card.

 

The Sportsman drew for their heat race starting positions and lined up the feature via random invert. Bucko Branham and Evan Roberts led the field to green, and Branham took the early lead. Roberts ran the top and built up enough momentum to pass Branham for the top spot on lap five. Nick Heywood was moving forward early, getting to 3rd position while Travis Bruno, Jamy Begor, Fire Swamp, Dave Camara and more all battled for spots behind them.

 

Heywood got by Roberts on lap eight and led convincingly, until around the halfway point when lapped traffic began to factor in and Scarborough reeled him in.

 

A lap 19 caution bunched up the field and Scarborough went around Heywood's outside, taking the lead. He survived one more restart and went on to win by just under one second.

 

Heywood was 2nd with Bruno 3rd. Swamp was 4th, Roberts held on for 5th. Dave Camara was 6th, followed by Begor, Vince Quenneville, Jr., Donovan Lussier and Tanner Forbes.

 

Travis Stokes and Mark Caron led the 9th State Cannabis Renegades to green for their 20-lap Feature with Caron taking the early lead. Josh Terry made his way forward from his 7th starting position, taking the lead from Caron on lap six.

 

Meanwhile, at the back, heavy hitters Tylor Terry, Nate Guay and Shawn Duquette were trying to make their way to the front, as well as a handful of drivers from the Canadian Semi Pro Street Stock series, who were racing with the Renegades.

 

Tylor Terry found his way to 3rd spot around lap 16, and then the caution flag flew, bunching the field back up. They completed one lap before another yellow flag period, followed by another restart, where Josh Terry held off Zack Daniels, Tylor Terry and Shawn Duquette to win his 2nd Feature of 2024. Martin Thiebert came up through the pack, crossing the line 3rd, finishing as the highest semi pro street stock, earning top honors there.

 

Burton Ward won a wild Pro Stock Feature, besting Marc Lolonde and Bastien Caron. Zack Daniels led much of the event's second half after passing Caron, but a lap 24 caution led to a pair of green-white-checkered restarts, and on the second go, Ward passed Daniels on the bottom, and held off a fray of drivers on the final circuit to win. Lalonde was 2nd with Caron 3rd. Daniels ended up 4th and Kyle Hoard finished 5th.

 

Justin Williams won the ModLite feature over Pierre Olivier-Trudel and Alex Forcier. Williams came from the back of his heat race to win convincingly, and had the field covered for the feature, navigating lapped traffic and a late restart to secure the win.

 

Brett Manor won the Moore Recycling Mini Stock A Main. The race began in chaos as front-running drivers Tyler Bell and Cale Manor made contact, immediately bringing out a caution. Neither driver returned. That gave Brett Manor and JP Corrow the front row with Manor scooting away from the field. Caleb and Kenny Tourville found their way to the front by the end, but Brett Manor bested the younger Tourville off turn four's outside for the last three laps to secure the win. Kenny Tourville was 3rd with Nate Smart in 4th and Speedy Bresette coming on at the ed to finish 5th.

 

The B-feature was won by Steven Bresette who did not finish his heat race as a result of a tumble off turn two. Jon Brown was 2nd. Nick Harnden was 3rd. Kyle Botala debuted a new Mazda with a 4th place run.

 

The Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds were in town, bringing with them 12 cars for Heats and a Feature. Jack Miller won the Modified class over Dan Karl. Merv Blackwell triumphed in the Sportsman vintage ranks, with Joe Rando and Don Birggs (Mystique and Antique) also visiting victory lane.

 

Airborne Park Speedway returns to racing Thursday, June 20 at 7PM with all regular divisions, including the Be Cool Heating and Air Conditioning 350 Modifieds. There will be kids' racecar rides at intermission. General admission tickets are $15. Pit entry is $28 for members and $38 for non-members.

Mother Nature Steals a Saturday Night Win at Peterborough Speedway

Into each life a little rain must fall. Sadly, the rain that fell on Central Ontario race fans – Saturday, June 8th – was just enough to spoil a great evening of action at Peterborough Speedway.
The Double Toonie/Fan Appreciation Night program got underway with qualifying heats that saw Shawn Murray and Chad Strawn share checkered flags in the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks, while Wyatt Beatty claimed a pair of opening round wins in the Kingsway Auto Centre Junior Late Models, with the others going to newcomers Savannah Strawn and Brody Coates, who each earned the first victories of their careers.
Multi-time track champions Dan McHattie and Ryan Kimball had the KOD Disposal Late Model preliminaries. Good friends and racing teammates Rob Crick and Chris Tubman each recorded a SwitchTire Mini Stock heat race triumph. Lyla Sikma, Landon Sellers, Lucas Finnegan and defending track champion Lucas Cousineau took the Kingsway Auto Centre Pro Junior Late Model wins.
Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock qualifying round victories went to last week's feature winner Angelo Novis, Samuel Arnott, Tegan Stanley and opening night main event winner Sean Kennedy. Fan favourite Marlie Owen and Clayton Reed shared Jiffy Lube Super Stock heat race wins. For Reed, it was the first Peterborough Speedway victory of his career.
Bullring bullet points: With the possibility of inclement weather in the area, track officials kept a close eye on the forecast. Just as the first heat race session was wrapping up, a light began to fall and made the track too wet for racing. After close to a 90-minute delay, crews were able to get things ready to roll for the next road of qualifying. Another storm cell blew in as the next heat races were concluding and forced the balance of the program to be cancelled.
Peterborough Speedway officials thank fans, racers, officials and staff for their patience and understanding during the track drying and weather delays.
Action returns to the popular Central Ontario layout Saturday, June 15th when KOD Disposal presents the APC Late Model 100 and the Dayco Super Stock 50, along with the home track Bone Stock and Renegade Truck divisions and a driver autograph session. Grandstand gates open at 3:00, with racing at 5:00.

Dawson Drimmie Sweeps Peterborough Speedway Ontario Legend Car Features

Stick and ball sports have spoken of a home field advantage for generations. Saturday, June 1st, Dawson Drimmie proved the adage also applies to racing with the Trailers Plus Ontario Legend Car Series as the hometown favourite swept a pair of feature events at Peterborough Speedway.
With starting line-ups decided by timed laps in the pre-race practice sessions, the opening round – presented by Sobey's Gravenhurst – came to the stripe with Cole McFadden and Mitch Wright on the front row. McFadden was the early race leader but surrendered the position to Wright as the duo started to work through slower traffic.

Wright continued to lead after a lap 6 restart and front runners held an advantage of almost a straightaway before the pace was slowed again for an incident on the backstretch with just over a handful of laps remaining. The No. 66 of Drimmie used the caution flag to plan his attack and took a lead he wouldn't surrender with 20 laps on the scoreboard.
Wright, McFadden, Adam Cuthbertson and Jordan Latimer completed the top 5.
Jordan Latimer and Adam Cuthbertson brought the pack to the green flag in the second 25-lapper, presented by Firehouse 343. Latimer was in control of the field, with McFadden, Wright and Drimmie in his rear-view mirror. A 3-car fight for the lead brought-out a lap 9 caution for an incident in the 3rd turn that also ended the night for the No. 90 of Latimer.

Dawson Drimmie took the lead on the restart and had Matt Haufe, Cuthbertson, Wright and Mark Griffin close behind. Drimmie's piece was strong and fast over the closing stages as he added another Peterborough Speedway win to his personal record books.

Adam Cuthbertson, Haufe, Wright and Wes Cuthbertson were next across the line.
Ontario Legend Car Series Peterborough Speedway notes: 17 starters took the green flag in the opening round, while all but 1 returned for the nightcap…Multi-time Peterborough Speedway race winner Matt Haufe made his first start under the Ontario Legend Car banner…Newcomers Nathan Killins and Gibson Baker turned their first Peterborough Speedway laps in the No. 37 and No. 47 cars respectively.

Perrego wins first ever STSS show at Airborne Park, Heywood returns to victory lane



PLATTSBURGH, Ny. – Anthony Perrego won Thursday's 70-lap Short Track Super Series race at Airborne Park over Mike Maresca and Alex Payne, becoming the first STSS winner at the North Country speed plant.

Maresca and Payne led the 27-car field to green with Maresca leading the first 14 laps. Payne went by Maresca coming to mark lap 15 while David Hebert closed in. Perrego, who started 9th, passed three cars on the opening lap and by this time had come to challenge Hebert for 3rd. Payne led comfortably following a spirited duel through traffic with Maresca, but come lap 30 Maresca and Perrego were hounding the youngster.

No cautions were thrown until lap 62, which resulted in the top-three fighting feverishly for supremacy amidst a sea of quality lapped cars the likes of Mario Clair, Francois Bellemare and even Mike Mahaney.

Perrego took the lead with 24 laps remaining and pulled away, until the lap 62 caution for an implement tire sitting on the racing surface in turn two.

He chose the bottom line and pulled away again, leaving Maresca and Payne to fend off Hebert, Mat Williamson, Stewart Friesen, Matt Sheppard and Tim Fuller.

At the end, Perrego went unchallenged to pick up the win, worth $7,070. Maresca and Payne joined him on the podium. Willaimson was 4th with Friesen 5th. Early contender Hebert was 6th, followed by Sheppard, Felix Roy, Carey Terrance and Michael Parent.

In the J&S Steel Sportsman ranks, Nick Heywood collected his first win of 2024, climbing from his 16th starting spot. Robert Gauthier and Matt LaValley led the field to green for the 30-lap, $1,500-to-win feature. Vince Quenneville started 4th and led early on, but Travis Bruno made his way up from 9th to take the lead on lap 10. A lap 12 restart saw Heywood join Bruno on the front row, and Heywood drove away from the field in the middle of turn two, going on to win by 2.6 seconds over Bruno, Fire Swamp, Donovan Lussier and Quenneville.

Tylor Terry won the 9th State Cannabis Renegade Feature after an exciting battle with Zack Daniels. Terry started 9th and was 2nd by lap eight, tracking down Daniels and finally getting by him on lap 18 when Daniels appeared to slip up in turn two. Terry navigated some light traffic and kept Daniels at bay, who finished solidly in 2nd. Shawn Duquette completed the podium with Billy Thwaits and Tyler Irwin rounding out the top-five.

The Moore Recycling Mini Stocks ran two features, splitting up the field with a pair of 20-lap races, each paying full A-main points and prize money. In the first feature, Speedy Bresette claimed his first win of 2024 over Steven Bresette. Jamie Whitney, Jr. turned in his best run of the season in 3rd.

In the second feature, it was Jake Fountain over Kris Clark and Ryan Senecal.

Airborne Park Speedway is back in action Thursday, June 6 at 7 p.m. with "Thursday Night Thunder". The pits open at 4 p.m., the stands at 5:30. Practice is slated for 6:20 and racing will begin at 7 p.m.

New Month Keeps the Ball Rolling at Peterborough Speedway

A fresh page on the calendar led to some exciting action on the track as Peterborough Speedway kicked-off the June portion of its 2024 schedule with home track Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, SwitchTire Mini Stock and KOD Disposal Late Model divisions, plus the Ontario Legend Car Series and Outlaw Midget tours.
Chris Tubman and Ember Junkin brought the Mini Stock field from the staging area for a 20-lap feature to open the night's main events. The driver of the No. 88 machine was quick out of the box and took the early lead with Junkin filling his rear-view mirror. A 4-car breakaway with Tubman, Junkin, John Lavalle and Rob Crick was leaving the rest of the pack behind as the laps clicked away. Junkin started to close on the leader near halfway, while Crick wrestled 3rd away from Lavalle with a pass as the scoreboard showed 11 laps complete. As the No. 19 of Junkin slowed, Crick began to close on his good friend Tubman, but the chase was too little too late and Tubman took the win. Lavalle, Erin Kearns and Mark Downer rounded-out the fast 5.
Kelly Balson and Jacob Mercer set the stage as the KOD Disposal Late Model teams rolled to the Great Canadian RV green flag for their 25-lap feature tilt. With a steeped Peterborough Speedway history, Balson took the lead, with Ryan Kimball moving into the runner-up position. James Horner was turning-in a strong performance, as the No. 79 ride moved into 3rd with just over a handful of laps complete. A frontstretch incident saw the pace slowed and a new leader, as defending track champion Ryan Kimball took over the top spot on the restart, with Balson and Dan McHattie next in line. Even with McHattie taking over the 2nd spot, Kimball held back his late race charge for the early season win. Balson, Mercer and Steve Powell followed the lead duo across the line.
With Angelo Novis and Johnnie McIntyre III on the front row it was time for the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stocks to hit the track for a 20-lap 'A' main. Novis and Tegan Stanley were running nose-to-tail after only a single lap. The race's first yellow waved with only a couple of circuits on the scoreboard, but that slight pause didn't keep the pilot of the No. 21 Mini Cooper from leading a 4-car breakaway that also included John Bates and Cory Horne. Novis picked-up the win over Bates, Stanley and Horne. Dwight Lavoie completed the top 5 at the line.
In post race inspection, the No. 12 of John Bates was disqualified. The top 5 finishers are now Novis, Stanley, Horne, Lavoie and Christen Lavalle.
Kevin and Nick Spiesz were on the front row as the Outlaw Midget Series rolled out for a 20-lap feature event. Nick Spiesz had an early lead over Jason Metcalfe and Mike Homewood. As the laps rolled on, Spiesz continued to lead with Metcalfe in the thick of the fight. The No. 29 machine took over the top spot with 14 laps complete and held on for the win. In the final running order, the top 5 finishers were Metcalfe, Nick Spiesz, Mike Homewood, Rob McCall and Fred Homewood.
It was a great night for Peterborough's Dawson Drimmie who scored a pair of Trailers Plus Ontario Legend Car Series 25- lap feature event victories. The first came with a top 5 of Mitch Wright, Cole McFadden, Adam Cuthbertson and Jordan Latimer. In the nightcap, Adam Cuthbertson, Matt Haufe, Wright and Wes Cuthbertson finished behind the race winner.
Rob Crick had a pair of Mini Stock preliminary round wins, with the others going to Ryan Babin and Chris Tubman. Bobby Cousineau, James Horner, Ryan Kimball and Dan McHattie split the Late Model heat races. Tegan Stanley had a couple of Bone Stock opening round checkered flags, with the others going to Johnnie McIntyre III and John Bates. Mike Homewood and Jason Metcalfe each picked-up a pair of Outlaw Midget qualifying heats.
All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post race technical inspection.
Bullring bullet points: Several racers were taking their maiden voyage in the track's Mini Stock and Bone Stock fields…After being involved in a late race incident during the Late Model feature on the May 18th opening night, the cars of James Horner, Kelly Balson and Ryan Kimball were able to return to action…Sean Kennedy took a week off at the controls of his No. 9 Bone Stock and handed-over the driving duties to Kyle Novis…During intermission, fans were given the opportunity to take a ride around the Central Ontario oval in a racecar…Ontario Legend Car Series teams were on hand for a pair of feature events with a decommissioned Ladder Truck from Firehouse 343 on hand to represent the sponsor as pace vehicle and participate in the Kid's Rides.
2024 action continues Saturday, June 8th with the season's first Double Toonie/Fan Appreciation Night, with $ 4.00 spectator grandstand admission. Racing includes the Bine Stock, Mini Stock, Renegade Truck, Super Stock, Late Model and Junior Late Model divisions. Gates open at 4:00, with a 5:00 Great Canadian RV green flag.
