Guts Out NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Win At St. Eustache

ST. EUSTACHE, Que. (July 27, 2013) – Scott Steckly returned to a familiar place on Saturday night, Victory Lane at Autodrome St. Eustache after winning the National 250 presented by Public Mobile.

Steckly, out of Milverton, Ont., staged a heated battle with J.R. Fitzpatrick as the two exchanged the lead four times over the final 65 laps of the race. However, a Lap 243 spin by Fitzpatrick in Turn 4, while racing side-by-side with Steckly, paved the way for the No. 22 Canadian Tire/Sylvania Dodge.

It was Steckly’s third consecutive NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 victory and the 14th of his series career. Additionally, it was his third win in five starts on the .4-mile Quebec oval.

Rookie Alex Guenette finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Fitzpatrick in third. Ron Beauchamp Jr. finished in the fourth spot after winning his fifth career pole position earlier in the day. Jason White followed with a season-best finish of fifth.

Louis-Philippe Dumoulin, Martin Roy, Trevor Seibert, Dave Connelly and Noel Dowler completed the top 10.

With the victory, Steckly took the lead in the championship standings from D.J. Kennington, who finished the race in 16th after battling mechanical problems early in the race. Steckly now holds a 10-point advantage over Dumoulin and has a 15-point edge on Kennington. It’s the first time this season that the standings lead has been in double-digits.

The National 250 presented by Public Mobile will premiere on TSN at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 4. The French-language telecast will air on RDS2 at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 24 and at 10 a.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 25 on RDS.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Sires presented by Mobil 1 is next on track on August 11 for the JuliaWine.com 100 from Circuit de Trois-Rivieres (Que.).

Ranger surprises no one with NJMP Pole; Elliott, Wong, Hessert also up front for Sunday's ARCA race

(MILLVILLE, N.J.) - Four ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards drivers topped the Menards Pole Qualifying Presented by Ansell record time at New Jersey Motorsports Park Saturday, but two-time defending champion Andrew Ranger will start up front.

Ranger, who also won the Menards Pole Award at New Jersey Motorsports Park in 2011 and at Road America earlier this year, set the qualifying record at 101.382 mph, or 79.896 seconds around the 2.25-mile paved road course Saturday afternoon.

Driving the No. 53 Waste Management Bagster Chevrolet, Ranger will start on the pole for Sunday's Barbera's Autoland 150 presented by Driven Racing Oil.

"I know that car really well," he said. "I feel very comfortable with that car."

Chase Elliott in the No. 9 Aaron's-Hendrickcars.com Chevrolet (100.164 mph), Brian Wong in the No. 55 Venturini Motorsports Toyota (99.771 mph) and Tom Hessert in the Barbera's Autoland Dodge No. 77 (99.77 mph) also topped the previous qualifying record, set by Patrick Long, of 99.602 mph in 2009.

Elliott will start second, Wong third and Hessert fourth. Venturini Motorsports driver Nelson Canache will start fifth and Will Kimmel in the Messina Wildlife Ford will start sixth.

Nine-time series champion and current ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards point leader Frank Kimmel will start ninth with point runner-up and SCOTT Rookie Challenge leader Mason Mingus starting in the 11th position.

Chris Buescher, who won the first ARCA Racing Series road course event of the 2013 season earlier this year at Road America, qualified seventh in the Roulo Brothers Racing No. 99 Ford. Justin Boston, in the ZLOOP Computer & Electronics Recycling Toyota, will start 8th in a third Venturini Motorsports car.

Ranger, who is from Roxton Pond, Quebec, topped the speed charts for both of the practice sessions on Saturday, despite turning only four laps of practice.

"We've tested that car before," he said. "We made a few changes, but we have been here two or three times and we know the track. We know the set up."

Sunday will be Ranger's second ARCA Racing Series event of the season. He's also made starts in the NASCAR K&N East and West series, NASCAR Canadian Tire series and NASCAR Nationwide series.

"I really like road racing," he said. "I ran in IndyCar before, too. But, I like oval racing, too. I even raced in on ARCA dirt track."

Hessert is one of four New Jersey natives in the race. He was among the fastest cars in the practice sessions as well.

"We're not far off from the second place car," he said. "We focused primarily on race runs. It was a smooth day."

Hessert said he was headed to his Cherry Hill, N.J. home after qualifying and sleep in his own bed the night before the race.

"It's the only race of the year I get to do that," he said.

This will be the sixth visit by the ARCA Racing Series to NJMP. Justin Allgaier, Patrick Long and Casey Roderick and Ranger, twice, are previous winners.

"I like it," Ranger said of the track. "It's very technical in the back of the track. It is challenging and you slide a little. It's a very cool track."

Sunday's race starts at 1 p.m. Live timing and scoring, plus audio by ARCA Racing Network's Charles Krall and Tim Clagg, will be on arcaracing.com.

Ryan Newman Wins 50th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coors Light Pole

‘Rocket Man’ Moves Into Ninth Place On All-Time Poles List

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 27, 2013) – In winning the Coors Light Pole Award at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Ryan Newman, a native of South Bend, Ind., became the ninth driver with at least 50 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series poles.

With a speed of 187.531 mph (47.992 seconds), Newman won his first Indianapolis pole, and joined an exclusive list that features some of the sport’s all-time greats. Here is the exclusive “50 Poles Club”:

Newman won 11 poles in 2003, the largest single-season number of a NASCAR Sprint Cup career that began in 2000 thus earning him the nickname “Rocket Man.” This is the 12^th season in which Newman has won at least one pole. Newman has won five or more poles in five different seasons.

Of his previous 49 poles, Newman has won the corresponding race four times with 18 top-five and 26 top-10 finishes. His last win from the pole came at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in September 2011.

Newman’s first pole came in the third start of his NASCAR Sprint Cup career, at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May of 2001, at the age of 23. Pole number 50 comes in his 424th start, at the age of 35. He won 43 poles driving for Penske Racing and seven since joining Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009.

Newman has won at least one pole at 17 different tracks, the most coming at Charlotte (nine).

Wayne Helliwell, Jr. Completes ACT Devil's Bowl Sweep

West Haven, VT – Wayne Helliwell, Jr. of Dover, NH completed his sweep of the American Canadian Tour events at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, July 28. Helliwell backed up his Spring Green win in May with a win in the St. Jude Children’s Hospital 150.

Helliwell had to battle both Tiverton, Rhode Island’s Ray Parent and weather on his way to the win. The Helliwell/Parent duo swapped the lead a total of six times over the first 93 laps. The outside lane seemed like the lane of choice as the second place driver got the advantage on the majority of the restarts.

The event was red flagged with 93 laps complete due to rain. After an over 20 minute rain delay the racing resumed with Parent at the point. Following another caution with 104 laps completed, Helliwell took over the lead for good. Parent settled in to second until he abruptly slowed up on lap 146. He had to pit to fill up with gas and returned for the restart and remained on the lead lap.

Travis Stearns inherited second after a week of long hours putting his Richard Green Trucking car back together after a hard wreck in the ACT International 500. Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. came from 11^th on the field to complete the podium in third. Glen Luce ran up front all day and took fourth, while Bobby Therrien recovered from a spin on lap 107 to round out the top five. Ben Lynch, Jimmy Hebert, Josh Masterson, Brent Dragon and Brandon Atkins finished off the top ten.

The 150-lap event was completed in just over 2 hours including a couple of rain delays. The event was slowed by 17 cautions.

The American Canadian Tour joins its sister series, the Série ACT, north of the border next Saturday, August 3 with a 150-lap event at Sanair Super Speedway in St-Pie, Quebec. The event will be the 10^th of 14 ACT races scheduled for 2013.

Patrick Cliche Takes First Série ACT Win at Montmagny

Montmagny, QC – Patrick Cliche of St-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec scored his first career Série ACT win in the Montmagny 100 at Autodrome Montmagny (QC) on Saturday, July 27. Cliche worked his way from his 12^th starting position to 4^th on a lap 75 restart. He inherited the lead after the caution flew once again on lap 75 and sent the top three cars to the rear. Cliche held off podium finishers Alex Labbe and Jonathan Bouvrette for the final 25 laps and took the checkers.

Patrick Hamel and Steven Boissonneault battled for the lead over the first half of the event with Hamel taking the advantage until a caution on lap 75. The field went green again but was quickly back under yellow with the top three, Hamel, Donald Theetge and Jean-François Déry going to the back of the field.

Veteran Claude Leclerc and young Etienne Cliche rounded out the top five. Boissonneault, Hamel, Patrick Boyer, Marc Beaudoin, and rookie Martin Goulet, Jr. filled out the top ten. The event saw six cautions and was completed in just over an hour. Fifteen of the nineteen cars that took the green completed all 100 laps. Eric LeHoux did not start the main event as he suffered rearend end issues.

Cliche becomes the tenth qualifier for the ACT Bond Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 21. He joins Jimmy Hebert, Brian Hoar, Wayne Helliwell, Jr., Joey Polewarczyk, Jr., Bobby Therrien, Donald Theetge, Jean-François Déry, Derrick O’Donnell and Cody Blake.

The Série ACT heads to Sanair Super Speedway next Saturday, August 3 for a combination ACT US 150-lap event.

James Hylton, in farewell tour, calls Pocono one of his 'favorite tracks'; taking final laps on the Tricky Triangle in ModSpace 125 Friday, August 2

(TOLEDO, Ohio) - James Hylton was destined to driver racecars. Considering he learned to drive in one of Henry Ford's Model T cars before he was 10 years old, it's ironic that the 78-year-old Inman, South Carolina stock car legend would finish up his career in a new Ford Fusion.

Indeed, it's been quite a ride for Hylton whose journey is, in part, coming to a close. He in fact announced his retirement from driving racecars at the onset of the season. 2013 will mark his farewell tour behind the wheel of his famous No. 48 car.

"I've been thinking about this for quite a while," Hylton said. "I'm 78, and the time has come."

Hylton made 602 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts since 1964, winning twice at Talladega and Richmond. During the race at Talladega, he recalls a fan waving to him outside of turn four on every lap.

"There was a pretty girl and she waved at me every lap," he said. "I wasn't too busy, so I would wave back at her."

He also said he should have won the series championship one season in NASCAR, but the point system was changed during the season, and Richard Petty captured the series title instead.

"I scared him anyway," Hylton quipped.

As for driving the No. 48 - made famous most recently by five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmy Johnson - Hylton said he met Johnson once during a weekend that ARCA and NASCAR were both running at Pocono Raceway. Shortly after the meeting, Johnson's crew chief, Chad Knauss, showed up in the ARCA garage and met Hylton, carrying an autographed hat.

"That took a lot of courage to send your crew chief to meet me."

His amazing tenure also includes eight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at Pocono reaching back to 1975. HIs best finishes were ninth in '75 and 10th in '77. He also has a pair of 14th place ARCA finishes at Pocono in '89 and '97.

"Pocono has always been one of my favorite tracks. I've always liked driving there. It reminds me of a road course, and I've always loved road courses. If you count all the corners, it's definitely no oval. It's a handling track. When your cars handling, you run good. When it isn't, you don't."

After finishing in the top-10 NASCAR Cup points in 10 of 12 seasons, Hylton embarked on a new career in the ARCA Racing Series, where, as he approaches 80, has made 157 starts since 1997. He also finished 11th in ARCA driver points in 2011.

"ARCA took me in, so to speak. What a wonderful place to be in my retirement years."

Born on the family farm in Roanoke County Virginia in 1934, right in the middle of America's Great Depression, he was one of 13 children. Times were hard; work and food were scarce for many. His father Preston farmed and found additional work supervising prisoners who built roads as part of the chain gang while his mother Sammy managed 13 kids as best she could. Hylton worked the farm from sun up till sun down to help raise food for the family.

"I had an excellent childhood. At the time, I thought it was awful, but looking back now, I wouldn't have traded that lifestyle for anything. We farmed the mountain behind the house. It was beautiful country. At night we'd head down to the creek with our lanterns and we'd go giggin' for bull frogs and eels. We'd skin the eels, and filet 'em. It was good eatin', better than fish.

"I remember going to school where I saw city folks for the first time. We'd all bring these giant biscuits for lunch, but the city boys all had sliced bread. I had never seen sliced bread."

He first caught the racing bug when he climbed aboard his father's Ford Model T.

"My oldest brother taught me how to drive it. It had three pedals on the floor, instead of gear shifts. But that's what got me into racing. I learned how to drive in a Ford Model T, and I'm still driving a Ford. That's pretty ironic to me."

His first racecar was also in the Ford Family - a 1934 Ford Coupe. But, to survive, Hylton climbed out of the driver's seat and became a mechanic for NASCAR champion Rex White, and then a champion crew chief for Ned Jarrett. But Hylton decided he would give up the crew chief role and get back to the business of driving racecars. And once he got behind the wheel, he never looked back. His second place NASCAR Cup points finish in his 1966 Rookie season is a record that still stands today. He also holds the distinction of being the oldest driver to race in all three of NASCAR's highest divisions, and of course, he holds that title in ARCA too. He made his 750th career professional stock car start at Pocono last August.

"It's time to step aside as a driver and turn this car over to the younger generation. I don't want to lose the Hylton Motorsports race team. I'll be there next year as the general manager. We are definitely in the market to build up our race team and put younger drivers behind the wheel who can run up front."

Hylton's feelings are mixed regarding his final year behind the wheel.

"It's kind of a love-hate relationship. If I could drive until I was 90 years old, I would. But I need to face the facts. It's too much of a job to be the driver and manager the team. I'm excited about the future. I feel I have an honest-to-goodness chance to build my team to where we can be competitive. Next time we come to Pocono, we will have a car and driver capable of winning the race."

Pocono Raceway, ModSpace 125 Schedule (August 1-2)

The ModSpace 125 gets started with practice from 3:00-5:00 Thursday, August 1. Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell gets underway at 1:15 Friday, August 2. The ModSpace 125 race is scheduled to get the green flag at 5:15 Friday. The ModSpace 125 is also live on SPEED at 5 eastern.

Le «Spectacle de l'année» à l'Autodrome Drummond,4e édition des World of Outlaws Sprint Cars

Le moment le plus attendu de l’année des amateurs de stock car sur terre battue est arrivé. Ce samedi 27 juillet la «F1» de la terre battue fait escale à Drummondville. Pour la 4^e fois de son histoire, la série des World of Outlaws Sprint Cars prendra d’assauts l’Autodrome Drummond. Les meilleurs coureurs en Amérique du Nord tels que ; le légendaire Steve Kinser #11, Donny Schatz #15, Sammy Swindelle #1, Darryn Pittman #9 et plusieurs autres seront sur place pour se livrer à nouveau une lutte épique.

L’an dernier lors de la présentation des essais chronométrés, Craig Dollansky #7 avait abaissé le record de piste avec un temps de 13.128 secondes avec rien de moins qu’une vitesse de pointe de 204 km/h (126 mph). Fait à noter que ces bolides conservent pratiquement cette même vitesse dans les virages dû à leurs ailerons sur le toit et à l’avant de la voiture. C’est une expérience à vivre pour de l’action à couper le souffle !

Les amateurs présents ont assisté à un tout un spectacle dans le cadre de l’épreuve de 100 tours qui opposait les meilleurs coureurs Modifié Gros bloc en Amérique du Nord. Quarante voitures étaient en piste pour se tailler l’une des 30 positions disponibles en vue de la confrontation principale plus tard en soirée.

La soirée a pris son envol avec la présentation d’essais chronométrés chez les Modifiés. Billy Decker #91 a été le plus rapide avec un temps de 16.944 secondes. Decker est d’ailleurs le seul à avoir roulé sous les 16 secondes.

Lors de la finale, quatrième à la tombée du drapeau vert, Steve Bernard #54 connaît un excellent départ et surprend tout le monde, en s’accaparant de la tête à la sortie de la courbe #2. Malheureusement pour le Québécois, il est victime d’un bris mécanique au 41^e tour, alors qu’il occupait la première position. À la relance, le vainqueur des deux dernières éditions, Matt Sheppard #9S en profite pour imposer le rythme aux commandes. Comble de malheur au 64^e tour, l’Américain est lui aussi victime de sa mécanique, alors qu’il perd la roue arrière droite de son bolide. Sheppard donne alors sur un plateau d’argent la tête au vétéran Danny Johnson #5*. Ce sera de courte durée puisque, Justin Haers #3 le surprend pour la tête. Décidément, ce n’est pas facile de rester premier dans cette course, car au 78^e passage, Haers est contraint lui aussi à l’abandon. C’est Billy Dunn #49D qui se voit accréditer du 1^er rang à la relance, mais, Dale Plank #7Z lui prend rapidement son dû et filer droit vers la victoire. Les dix derniers tours ont offert tout un spectacle entre David Hébert #1, Alan Therrien #39A et Brett Hearn #20, qui ont bagarré férocement pour la 3^e position.

Au cours de la finale de 50 tours Sportsman, comptant pour la « DIRTcar Series », Steve Bernier #25 réalise une course sans bavure pour remporter la 1re épreuve de cette série en sol Québécois. Malgré plusieurs neutralisations et des attaques multipliées de Mathieu Desjardins #3M et Joey Ladouceur #92J, Bernier demeure solide et signe sa 26^e victoire en finale Sportsman à l’Autodrome Drummond. À noter que 35 bolides étaient en compétition.

Polewarczyk Carries Hot Streak to Devil's Bowl Speedway on Sunday

ACT “International 500” winner looking for first win at Vermont track

WEST HAVEN, VT – One of America’s hottest short track stock car drivers is headed for Vermont’s Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, July 28. Joey Polewarczyk, Jr., the 24 year-old star from Hudson, NH, will try to continue building on his unprecedented string of success as the American-Canadian Tour Late Models return for the inaugural St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 150 presented by Cat Country 105.3.

The driver known as “Joey Pole” won the first-ever ACT International 500 at Airborne Speedway on Sunday, July 21, pocketing more than $30,000 for his win. The victory was his fourth in the last five ACT races dating back to June 15 – a streak that has garnered some national attention.

Polewarczyk has been solid in his three career starts at Devil’s Bowl, with a best finish of second in the 2012 Spring Green. Polewarczyk credited his fourth-place run in that same event this past May as the turning point for his ultra-successful summer stretch.

“I love Devil’s Bowl. It’s one of the nicest tracks around we’ve run well there,” Polewarczyk said. “The Spring Green really kicked-started our season with our first good run of the year, and I feel like that race started all the momentum we’ve had this year.”

The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 150 will be the longest race ever held at Devil’s Bowl Speedway since the track was paved in 2010. Polewarczyk thinks that the extra laps will give him and the rest of the ACT field more of a chance to beat defending ACT champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr., of Dover, NH, who has won the last two ACT events at the track.

“The longer distance will make this race all about tire management and conserving so there’s still some grip left at the end of the race,” Polewarczyk said. “Wayne is always tough no matter where we race – especially at Devil’s Bowl – but we’re going to do the same thing to our setup that has worked for us during these wins lately. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Other ACT drivers expected to challenge for the win include Vermonters Jimmy Hebert, Brent Dragon, and Bobby Therrien. They’ll face tough competition from a group of home-track Devil’s Bowl stars including rookie sensation Josh Masterson of Bristol, VT. In his first year of Late Model racing, Masterson leads the track championship standings and picked up the first win of his career at the Rutland Herald Mid-Season Championship event on July 12.

Rutland, VT-based radio station Cat Country 105.3 FM is the event’s presenting sponsor and will hold a benefit drive for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital charity as part of its annual fundraising efforts for the organization. On-air personalities Willie Clark and Judy Anderson will be on hand.

The St. Jude/Cat Country event will open the second half of the season for not only the American-Canadian Tour, but also for the weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Modified, Renegade, and Mini Stocks divisions at Devil’s Bowl. Todd Stone of Middlebury, VT leads the Bond Auto Parts Modifieds on the strength of five feature wins, while defending champ Robert Gordon of Milton, VT holds a slim lead in the Renegades and Jake Noble of Benson, VT tops the Central Vermont Motorcycles Mini Stocks.

Green flag qualifying action begins at 1:30pm on Sunday, July 28. Special general admission is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors (62+), and free for children 12 and under. Camping on speedway grounds is also free.

L'équipe VTi Motorsports au National 250

PROCHAINE SORTIE : AUTODROME ST-EUSTACHE

(Repentigny, QC) – Après un abandon plus que prématuré au circuit ICAR, l’équipe VTi Motorsports dont le pilote est Hugo Vannini, effectuera sa prochaine sortie, samedi soir à l’occasion du National 250 qui sera présenté à l’Autodrome St-Eustache.

En raison de cette mésaventure à Mirabel et de son absence bien involontaire dans l’ouest canadien, Hugo a rétrogradé au 17^e rang au classement après avoir atteint ses objectifs d’un top en course, mais aussi au classement général.

« C’est certain que notre absence va certainement nous empêcher de terminer parmi les dix premiers. Même Jeff Lapcevich qui détenait la troisième place, a préféré demeurer chez lui. Ce n’est pas un secret, nous allons aux courses parce que l’on aime cela. Aller dans l’ouest canadien aurait exigé un déboursé minimal de 15,000 $. Cela aurait été de mettre en péril le restant de notre saison et nous ne voulions surtout pas cela», de dire le pilote repentignois.

Jusqu’à présent, l’équipe VTi Motorsports compte deux présences dans la série NASCAR Canadian Tire à ce complexe motorisé des Basses-Laurentides. En 2009, on avait obtenu le 19^e rang après un abandon en raison d’un accident alors qu’en 2010, c’est un bris de moteur qui avait causé sa perte.

La semaine dernière, l’équipe VTi s’est rendue à l’Autodrome St-Eustache afin d’essayer la Ford Fusion pour les ovales. Le tout s’est bien déroulé. La voiture a été stable et rapide alors que son pilote a été plus que régulier dans ses chronos. On est donc confiant pour samedi soir.
