Devil's Bowl Speedway Statement on the Passing of Leon Gonyo

WEST HAVEN, VT – Devil's Bowl Speedway management and staff are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of long time stock car racing competitor Leon Gonyo. Mr. Gonyo, 63, of Chazy, NY, won the speedway's final asphalt NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Modified race of the season on the evening of Saturday, September 19, 2015 but succumbed soon after.
Mr. Gonyo appeared to suffer a medical event while driving his racecar around the speedway during a ceremonial victory lap. His car then made an impact into the frontstretch retaining wall before approaching the victory lane area. Mr. Gonyo utilized proper safety equipment including an approved helmet, seat, and restraining belts. The car was inspected following the incident and was deemed to be mechanically and structurally sound.
Devil's Bowl Speedway official Dick Therrien sustained minor injuries when the car struck a ladder that he was standing on, but is recovering at home after being evaluated at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Gonyo was a true gentleman of the sport and enjoyed a racing career with more than 40 years of success at many race tracks in the northeastern United States and Canada. His talents seemed to only improve with age, proven by his final victory on Saturday night – his fifth win of the season at Devil's Bowl Speedway and his seventh overall in 2015.
Much more than just a winner, Leon Gonyo was a very well-respected and highly regarded member of the local stock car racing community, and was presented with Devil's Bowl Speedway's highest honor for 2013, the John Bruno Award, which is given annually to someone who has made a significant contribution to short track racing during their lifetime while maintaining high standards of conduct and respect on and off the track. Mr. Gonyo met and far surpassed the award's criteria and was a leader in the community.
The effort and care shown in assisting Mr. Gonyo on Saturday night was nothing short of incredible, and Devil's Bowl Speedway thanks the Fair Haven Rescue medical staff on site, the Devil's Bowl Speedway Safety Team, and the many people who volunteered to help, for their personal care and professionalism.
Our thoughts and very best wishes are with Leon Gonyo's family and race team, his wide-reaching fan base, and the community of Chazy, New York. Devil's Bowl Speedway thanks its legion of racing fans, competitors, officials, staff and volunteers, sponsors, and media members for their outpouring of support and asks that the same continues to be extended to the Gonyo family.

Autumn Colours Classic at Peterborough Speedway is Anyone's Race to Win

It could come down to a roll of the dice, a lucky break or being in the right place at the right time.
Even with the nickname Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval, Peterborough Speedway is known as a driver's track. Finding your way to Dart Heating & Air Conditioning Victory Lane can come down to a number of different factors, but having a perfect race car isn't usually one of them. Any driver in any of the divisions competing at this year's Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – has a realistic chance of taking home the hardware from a win at the 23rdedition of the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing.
In past seasons, feature event fields in most divisions were comprised of more than 20 starters. A toss of a coin here or there could make the difference between a top 5 finish and a trip to the winner's circle. More often than not, a solid run could be decided by some good racing luck. With Autumn Colours drawing the best of the best from tracks all across the province, repeat winners have been rare. Dwayne Baker took the Limited Late Model wins in 2012 and 2013, while Mike Bentley won the Pro Late Model main events in the same years.
The 23rd Annual Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – takes the green flag Friday, October 9th practice and first round qualifying for the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Mini Stock, Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car, Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model, Pro Late Model and OSCAAR Modified divisions. Pit gates will open at 10:00, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at5:00 and racing at 6:00. Action will continue throughout the weekend with plenty of excitement scheduled for Saturday, October 10th and feature events on the agenda Sunday, October 11th.

STECKLY TIES RECORD FOR ACTIVE TOURING SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES
FRASERVILLE, ON (September 19, 2015) – Today at Kawartha Speedway, Scott Steckly driver of the Canadian Tire Dodge completed the final leg of his 2015 journey, winning the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 championship, his fourth in nine seasons. With the win Steckly ties active NASCAR Touring and National series competitors with his fourth championship and he is the 33 in NASCAR history to win four or more.
"This year was different than our 2013 championship where we had to come from behind," said Steckly. "This year we were being chased by two very good competitors for this big prize. But our philosophy entering this event didn't change as we hoped to have a car good enough to run up front and win the race. We also love coming to Kawartha Speedway as it is a great track for racing on and we always run well here."
During time trials, the Milverton, Ontario racer lapped the high-banked 3/8-mile oval in 17.666 seconds setting a new track record and taking the pole starting position. He is now tied for the lead in all time pole wins with seventeen.
Steckly' s goal for the 250 lap Pinty's 250 event was to stay up front, lead some laps and finish in the top three. After leading the initial 47 laps, Steckly dropped back to second where he continued to follow race leader and eventual winner Jason Hathaway. "I knew all I had to do was finish second to him and we had the championship won," said a jubilant Steckly after the winning Championship number four. "It was really an uneventful race which worked out great for us. My 22 Racing Team is absolutely the best and I know I say that all the time but there is just none better than my group. And we wouldn't be where we are without all of our fantastic sponsors who support us no matter what. Winning these championships never gets old, this one feels just as good as the first one."
The 2015 season kicked-off at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on May 17, with Steckly finishing with one of his several top five positions. He would start winning races at event five in Edmonton followed up by Saskatoon and then a few weeks later at Riverside Speedway. All in all he posted three wins, seven top five finishes and ten top ten finishes with four poles and entered the finale at Kawartha with nine point advantage over Ranger & Hathaway for the championship.
The Pinty's 250 will air on TSN on Saturday October 3rd at 1 p.m. and on RDS on Thursday October 22nd at 7 p.m.

A successful 2015 season for the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – is about to see the checkered flag. Drivers and teams will head for Flamboro Speedway, near Hamilton for a pair of events – Friday and Saturday, October 2nd and 3rd – that will determine this year's tour champion.
With 8 of the season's events in the record book, Donny Beatty has a slim 2 point advantage over Nick Lees in the fight for the title. Ironically, neither driver has yet to score a main event. Consistency has been the key throughout the schedule and Richard Warnes – who along with Bill Pickford and Randy Hollingsworth make up the OMRS group of officials – says there has been a level playing field since the first green flag.
"All along, our mandate has been to create a competitive and affordable racing series," said Warnes. "If you look at the top 5 positions in the standings, the biggest gap anywhere is between 4th and 5thplace. And even there, the difference is only 17 points. The top 5 spots in the overall running order are just 59 markers apart. With a pair feature events on the agenda at Flamboro, it could really change the final running order."
After a stretch of disappointing runs to start the year, Alex Lees has won the last 2 events on the schedule. The victories – Saturday, August 29th at Peterborough and Saturday, September 5th at Flamboro – weren't enough to put the Cameron, Ontario racer into championship contention, but he now sits 8th in the standings, less than 100 markers out of the top spot.
Series officials have announced that this year's awards celebration will once again be held Saturday, November 14th at the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre in Oshawa.

Barre, VT – Williamstown, VT's Jimmy Hebert has filed the first official entry for the 53rdNorthfield Savings Bank Milk Bowl on Sunday, October 11. The 2015 edition of the "toughest short-track stock car race in North America" has more than $60,000 in posted awards with $10,000 guaranteed to the winner of the annual Thunder Road Speedbowl season finale.
The Milk Bowl is one of the most celebrated auto racing events in the United States with its unique race format and tradition. The special event for American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Models is run in three 50-lap segments, with the starting grid for the second and third segments set by inverting the finishing order of the previous segment. Drivers receive one point per position, per segment, with the lowest combined finish for all three segments earning the overall win.
"The Milk Bowl means a lot," Hebert said. "I grew up watching it as a kid, and it was definitely the biggest race at my home track (Thunder Road). We're excited for it this year – we've finally started to figure things out at Thunder Road. We've had some tough luck the last couple years and couple of car issues, but I think we're in pretty good shape this year."
In addition to the $10,000 minimum winner's purse, posted awards include a $1,000 bonus for the driver setting the fastest time in time trials and $500 for the driver with the second-fastest time. $7,500 in lap leader awards are also up for grabs and will be distributed among the top-three drivers on each lap of the event.
The winner's list for the Milk Bowl includes some of the most celebrated names in Northeast auto racing history. Robbie Crouch holds the record with four Milk Bowl wins, while St-Denis, QC's Patrick Laperle and Williston, VT's Brian Hoar lead active ACT drivers with three victories each.
Former NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kevin Lepage and 1960s legend Russ Ingerson were also three-time winners. Other former champions of the event include inaugural winner Harold Hannaford; Dave Dion; Beaver, Bobby, and Brent Dragon; Nick Sweet; and defending champion Eddie MacDonald.
The two-day event begins Saturday, October 10 at 1:30pm with Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Qualifying Day. Time trials and "Triple 50" qualifying races will set the first 26 spots in the 30-car Milk Bowl starting field, with the balance determined by the last-chance "B-Feature" Sunday, October 11 at 1:00pm. Saturday's program also includes time trials and the first segments of "Mini Milk Bowls" for the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen and Allen Lumber Street Stocks.
Advance adult admission for the 53rd Northfield Savings Bank Milk Bowl is just $30 for a two-day ticket or $25 for Sunday only. Kids age 12 and under are admitted free.

Un weekend de congé pour l'équipe #71
Après un été des plus chargé, l'équipe #71 de Raphaël Lessard a pris la décision de ne pas prendre part au programme de Beech Ridge Motor Speedway ce weekend.
Étant donné les dommages causés à la voiture lors du programme de Fredericton, l'équipe n'a pas été en mesure d'effectuer les réparations requises dans les temps. De plus, plusieurs membres de l'équipe ne pouvaient être présentslors de ce programme.
Rappelons que sur cette piste, notre pilote Raphaël n'ait pas autorisé à conduire sa voiture n'ayant pas l'âge obligatoire de 15 ans. Au départ, c'est le « spotter » Étienne Cliche qui devait conduire la voiture bien que l'équipe ait tenté d'obtenir une dérogation. Nous allons donc concentrer nos efforts pour atteindre notre objectif principal de cette saison c'est-à-dire, l'apprentissage de notre pilote.
Les prochaines semaines s'annoncent chargées pour notre jeune pilote, nous vous tiendrons au courant des prochains déplacements de l'équipe.

Alex Tagliani arrive au Kawartha Speedway avec un but très précis : inscrire sa deuxième victoire de la saison sur une piste ovale. Tag doit réussir cet exploit s'il veut que son équipe passe du quatrième rang à l'échelon supérieur au championnat des propriétaires.
« Je veux cette victoire pour Colin Livingston, le propriétaire de la Chevrolet numéro 18 EpiPen/CGI/ CanTorque qui dirige habilement l'équipe, a déclaré Tagliani. C'est mon dernier souhait de la saison de course 2015. Ça serait tout de même génial de triompher pour le propriétaire de CanTorque qui est un partenaire de longue date dans ce projet. Nous voulons terminer la saison en beauté.

« Ce fut une année extraordinaire pour l'équipe EpiPen/CGI/CanTorque et pour moi, a poursuivi Tagliani. J'ai remporté ma première victoire NASCAR sur piste ovale, nous sommes devenus les fiers parents d'Eva-Rose, et je vais être intronisé au Temple de la renommée du sport motorisé canadien le 17 octobre à Toronto. L'année 2015 a été une année fantastique à venir jusqu'ici. »
Tagliani a inscrit son nom dans le livre des records de la série NASCAR Canada en juin lors de son triomphe historique sur l'ovale du Sunset Speedway en Ontario. Le pilote de Terrebonne a pris un tour à tous ses rivaux en route vers le cercle des vainqueurs. Pour Tagliani, il s'agissait de son premier triomphe NASCAR sur piste ovale, et il compte bien en ajouter un autre ce week-end.
« L'équipe Tagliani Autosport a effectué un travail remarquable toute la saison, et elle a dû s'adapter à deux pilotes de remplacement qui se sont démarqués lorsque j'ai dû m'absenter pour courir en IndyCar et en NASCAR XFINITY. Pier-Luc Ouellette a terminé huitième à ses débuts en NASCAR lors de l'ouverture de la saison à Mosport, et David Michaud s'est maintenu parmi les meneurs sur l'ovale du Riverside Speedway en Nouvelle-Écosse, occupant le deuxième rang à plusieurs occasions avant d'être ralenti par un ennui mécanique à 50 tours de l'arrivée.

En plus de son cinquième rang à l'arrivée avec la camionnette de Brad Keselowski, Tagliani a connu une autre excellente sortie avec l'équipe Penske à Mid-Ohio en décrochant sa deuxième position de tête consécutive en série NASCAR XFINITY. Tag filait vers la victoire avant de se faire bousculer à deux virages de l'arrivée. Il a terminé deuxième.
« La saison a vraiment passé trop rapidement à mon goût, mais en bout de ligne ce fut une superbe année. Je suis très heureux des résultats et de tout ce qu'on a accompli cette année, » a conclu Tag.

Rescheduled Vermont 200 Finale Ready to Go at Devil’s Bowl Speedway

WEST HAVEN, VT – Devil's Bowl Speedway fans will get to enjoy an extra week of the asphalt stock car racing season at the rescheduled Mekkelsen RV Vermont 200 Championship finale on Saturday night, September 19 at 5:00 p.m. Qualifying was completed last week before rain washed out the main events, but clear skies and warm temperatures are predicted for Saturday's big program of racing for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series presented by Yandow Sales & Service and John Deere.
A pair of extra-distance 50-lap feature races will decide the Bond Auto Parts Modified division title between Ron Proctor and Vince Quenneville Jr. Brandon, VT veteran Quenneville trimmed a single point off Proctor's lead during preliminary racing last weekend, leaving Proctor – a former two-time track champion from Charlton, NY – with a slim four-point advantage entering the finales.
Josh Masterson of Bristol, VT has a comfortable 49-point lead in the Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Model class and a solid finish in the division's annual 100-lap finale will give him his first championship. Robert Bryant Jr. has had his most successful season to date and holds a nine-point lead on second place ahead of Todd Stone, who will pull double-duty in both the Late Model and Modified divisions on Saturday night.
The Brileya's Chrysler-Jeep Renegade division has a 39-point spread between leader Robert Gordon and Scott FitzGerald following qualifying last week. Gordon, of Milton, VT, will try to hold on through a 50-lap main event for his third Devil's Bowl championship in the last four years.
Chris LaVair of Gabriels, NY has a 44-point edge on defending title winner Chuck Bradford in the Portland Glass Mini Stocks and needs only to finish Saturday's two-segment race to wrap up a solid year. LaVair won his first championship at Airborne Park Speedway two weeks ago and looks for the season sweep.
The MFT Sauce & Rub Co. Enduro Series will also run its final asphalt race of season in a fender-bending, metal-crunching 50-lap race on Saturday night. The point race for the entry-level Enduro class wraps up on The Dirt Track at Devil's Bowl on October 4 as part of the "King of the Clay" event.
General admission for the Mekkelsen RV Vermont 200 on Saturday, September 19 is $20 for adults and free for kids age 12 and under; pit passes are $40. Two-day passes purchased last weekend before the postponement will be honored on Saturday night. Grandstands open at 3:00 p.m. and racing is at 5:00 p.m.
