Peterborough Speedway Regroups After Weather Forces Cancellation

All the planning in the world can't create a great night of hometown racing when Mother Nature has other ideas. Despite their best intentions, track officials at Peterborough Speedway were forced to cancel the Saturday, May 25th program after a storm front rolled through Central Ontario.
Action will now continue with the Bone Stock, Mini Stock and Late Model divisions, plus the Ontario Legend Car Series and Outlaw Midgets on the program for a 6:00 start Saturday, June 1st. Fans of the home track Super Stock, Renegade Truck and Junior Late Model classes are advised that they will be part of the June 8th Double Toonie/Fan Appreciation Night. Ontario Modifieds Racing Series events are on the Saturday, July 6th line-up.
"In a perfect world, we'd run every event on the schedule exactly as we would expect," said Peterborough Speedway track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse. "Sadly, Mother Nature isn't a race fan as evident by the fact that nearly every track in the province was forced to cancel their programs as well. The best we can do is get the word out to our fans, racers and staff, while keeping a positive attitude as we move forward."
On the subject of moving forward, track supporters will take the next step toward Making Memories for Life with the year's first Double Toonie/Fan Appreciation Night, with $4.00 spectator grandstand admission – presented by Pepsi – Saturday, June 8th. The KOD Disposal sponsored APC Late Model 100 and Dayco Super Stock 50, with the local Bone Stocks and Renegade Trucks is on the calendar for Saturday, June 15th.
Peterborough Speedway will once again host its Autism Awareness Night, in support of CNAF, the Canadian National Autism Foundation – with the home track Bone Stock, Renegade Truck, Super Stock and Junior Late Model classes, plus the TQ Midgets – Saturday, June 22nd.
In its 55th consecutive season of weekly operation, Peterborough Speedway officials have earned a reputation for providing Central Ontario fans with great value for their family motorsports entertainment dollar. With an annual schedule of the best in home track racing and special guest divisions, the venue has created an atmosphere that traditionally offers a calendar of at least 15 action-packed shows. Of course, every season culminates with the annual running of the APC Autumn Colours Classic. This year's 31st edition of the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing takes the Great Canadian RV green flag October 11th through 13th.

Roy Stuns Modifieds at Airborne Park

PLATTSBURGH, Ny. - Felix Roy won Thursday's Be Cool Heating and Air Conditioning 358 Modified Feature at Airborne Park over Tim Fuller and George Foley. Fire Swamp, Josh Terry, Ryan Senecal and Jason Bradley also scored wins on the night.

 

Roy started 4th and quickly passed 3rd starter Patrick Dupree before finding his way around polesitter George Foley. Foley led the opening circuit before giving way to Tanner Siemons on the second lap. Siemons ran the outside lane while Roy made gains in the middle, and by lap eight, Roy made the pass for the lead exiting turn two. He was largely unchallenged for the rest of the race, amassing a comfortable lead over Tim Fuller, who settled into second near the end of the race. Foley held on for 3rd with Steve Bernier and Mike Mahaney completing the top five.

 

In J&S Steel Sportsman action, Akwesasne, Ny.'s Fire Swamp charged from 9th to 1st in a hurry, scooting around leader Craig Wholey with six laps to go to secure the win. Wholey held on for 2nd with Bucko Branham running up to 3rd from 6th. Codie Aubin was 4th and Joey Scarborough was 5th.

 

The 9th State Cannabis Renegade Feature was won by Josh Terry. The younger of the racing Terry brothers, his orange #65 started on the front row and drove away with the win. Older brother Tylor wasted no time in getting to Josh's back bumper, climbing from 7th to 2nd on the bottom lane in just six laps, but a caution flag appeared to slow his roll, and Josh Terry cruised to victory by a few car lengths. Nate Guay registered his third podium of the season in 3rd place with Shawn Duquette and Billy Thwaits rounding out the top five.

 

Ryan Senecal flew into Egglefield Ford Victory Lane at the end of a challenging Moore Recycling Mini Stock Feature. CJ Belanger led the way early, while six or seven cars fought inches apart for the lead. The action got too hot coming around to complete the third lap, and Belanger hit the frontstretch wall. With 20 more cars behind him, Senecal ended up driving on the left side tires only after contact with a spinning car. Remarkably, the Senecal's blue #94 Pontiac landed on all fours, and he drove on to victory from the restart, holding off Greg Zindler in the closing laps. Kenny Tourville, Josh LaPorte, Jr. and Rick Doner followed.

 

Jason Bradley won the B Feature for the Moore Recycling Mini Stocks, marking his first-ever trip to Egglefield Ford Victory Lane over Chuck Mooney and Clemmy Bell.

 

Airborne Park Speedway is back in action in a huge way this Thursday, May 30, with the Short Track Super Series coming to town, bringing dirt modified racing's best drivers and fastest cars with them. The modified feature will pay $7,070 to win and is slated for 70 laps in distance, highlighting the 70 years of racing history at Airborne Park. The J&S Steel Sportsman, 9th State Cannabis Renegades and Moore Recycling Mini Stocks will join the powerful STSS modifieds for regular racing action. Stewart Friesen leads the STSS North Region points standings by five markers after just one race, a May 14 stop at Accord Speedway. Rich Ricci, Jr., Mat Williamson, Alex Yankowski and Matt Sheppard are behind Friesen in that order, but only 20 points separate the top-five. Mat Williamson leads the overall STSS points.

Six-week, industry-wide celebration features '600 Miles of Remembrance' tribute at Coca-Cola 600 and new NASCAR IMPACT partnerships to support veterans, service members and military families

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 21, 2024) – This Memorial Day weekend will serve as the launching pad for the NASCAR community to formally honor and recognize the United States Armed Forces through its annual NASCAR Salutes Together with Coca-Cola program.

 

Anchoring the opening weekend is the powerful "600 Miles of Remembrance" tribute, where every NASCAR Cup Series car in Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 (6 p.m. ET on FOX) features the name of a fallen service member on the windshield. NASCAR and Coca-Cola will host Gold Star Families at Charlotte Motor Speedway, including many whose loved ones will be honored in the race.

 

"Coca-Cola North America cherishes the opportunity to honor the valor and sacrifice of our military heroes and their families in such a significant way each NASCAR season," said Chris Bigda, Senior Director of Sports Marketing at Coca-Cola North America. "We're looking forward to partnering with Speedway Motorsports, NASCAR and the racing community to show our appreciation throughout the entire NASCAR Salutes window, especially this Memorial Day weekend as we pay tribute during the 65th running of the Coca-Cola 600 to those who made the ultimate sacrifice."

 

NASCAR Salutes Together with Coca-Cola officially kicked off with a new 30-second television spot that debuted during FOX's broadcast of the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway this past Sunday. The campaign will continue celebrating the service and sacrifice of U.S. military members and their families through a multitude of at-track integrations, original content features and fan engagement opportunities through the NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway on June 30. "NASCAR has always displayed a deep-seated appreciation for our nation's service members throughout its 76-year history, and we're proud to continue partnering with Coca-Cola and our entire industry to express our gratitude for the incredible sacrifices those individuals and their families make on behalf of all Americans," said Pete Jung, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at NASCAR.

 

In conjunction with NASCAR Salutes, the sanctioning body has announced a new NASCAR IMPACT partnership with Honor and Remember to continue recognizing fallen service members and the sacrifices of their families. For more than a decade, Honor and Remember has collaborated with the NASCAR industry to host Gold Star Families at race weekends and display the organization's dedicated symbol of remembrance – the Honor and Remember Flag – at racetracks across the country, including Charlotte Motor Speedway.

 

NASCAR IMPACT this week also launched a campaign to support the mission of Sound Off, a nonprofit organization founded to help reduce veteran suicide through free and anonymous mental health support for veterans and service members. Forty-seven percent of military members who show signs of PTSD or depression do not seek help, in part because of fears related to stigma or blowback. Sound Off provides a platform where military members who would otherwise avoid mental health support can engage anonymously with veterans with similar lived experiences. NASCAR is encouraging veterans across its fan base to download the fully encrypted Sound Off app and register as peer supporters.  

 

In addition to those mentioned above, other NASCAR Salutes activities across the industry include:

  • Discounted grandstand tickets are available to military members throughout NASCAR Salutes and all season long with NASCAR MILTIX Presented by GEICO. Active military and veterans can verify their status through SheerID and purchase tickets by visiting NASCAR.com/miltix.
  • At NASCAR events during the campaign, service members from local bases will have access to complimentary grandstand tickets and unique VIP experiences made possible by Vet Tix and the NASCAR Troops to the Track Program.
  • NASCAR Troops to the Track, presented by Chevrolet, honors and pays tribute to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces by inviting service members from local military installations to VIP experiences at NASCAR races, including hosting military personnel at World Wide Technology Raceway and Nashville Superspeedway during NASCAR Salutes.        
  • Mechanix Wear will provide NASCAR officials and Cup Series teams special camouflage "MultiCam Mechanix Wear" gloves for the Coca-Cola 600.
  • For the seventh season, Mack Trucks, the "Official Hauler of NASCAR", will wrap one of its NASCAR haulers in support of NASCAR Salutes for Memorial Day weekend. Fans voted for one of several different paint schemes in April. Mack will reveal the winning scheme on its social media channels leading into the Coca-Cola 600 weekend. 
  • In the weeks leading up to the Coca-Cola 600, Charlotte Motor Speedway continued its annual Mission 600, pairing the Coca-Cola Racing Family and other drivers with military bases to educate the NASCAR community about the day-to-day lives of the men and women who serve.
  • Xfinity, a Proud Premier Partner, will display red, white, and blue Xfinity windshield headers on their race cars during the NASCAR Xfinity Series Bet MGM 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This initiative showcases Xfinity's commitment to hiring veterans, National Guard and reserve service members, and military spouses who bring unique skills and experiences to Comcast NBCUniversal.
  • The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series will also display red, white and blue windshield decals on all trucks racing in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
  • Continuing its tradition, Goodyear will replace its iconic "Eagle" sidewall design with "Honor and Remember" during the Coca-Cola 600 in recognition of the organization working closely with the industry to honor Gold Star Families who have lost family members as a result of serving.
  • NASCAR will continue to utilize its handicap enabled "Mobility Pit Box" throughout the NASCAR Salutes campaign to host mobility impaired race fans and veterans attending races at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Sonoma Raceway, and New Hampshire Speedway. The Mobility Pit Box was designed and announced by Toyota last year. It was gifted to NASCAR at the beginning of the 2024 season to expand its availability, highlighting Toyota's vision of "Mobility for All".
  • Ford Motor Company will pay tribute to veterans and active service members in a special pre-race moment including several specially wrapped vehicles ahead of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway on June 30.
  • Universal Technical Institute, NASCAR's Official Automotive Education partner for more than 20 years, in partnership with the United Service Organizations, will host a group of 50 active-duty military service members at their Mooresville campus for a day of motorsports industry immersion. Service members will tour UTI's Mooresville NASCAR Technical Institute campus, visit a race shop, and talk about industry training and employment opportunities.
  • NASCAR, Coca-Cola Consolidated, and Charlotte Motor Speedway teamed up with several local community organizations – including Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte and Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region – to complete home rebuild projects for veterans in conjunction with the NASCAR Salutes program.

Central Ontario's weekly racing scene is about to take the green flag for another year and grandstand general admission at Peterborough Speedway for the Saturday, May 18th lid-lifter is free, as Pure Country 105 presents the 2024 season opener.
 
With spectator gates opening at 3:00 and a 5:00 green flag on the docket, take your first step toward Making Memories for Life at this year's kick-off event. Featured racing divisions include Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stocks, SwitchTire Mini Stocks, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks, Jiffy Lube Super Stocks, KOD Disposal Late Models and the Trailers Plus Ontario Legend Car Series. There will also be a fan appreciation autograph session at intermission.
 
"After a busy off-season, we're excited to get a new schedule of racing underway," said Peterborough Speedway track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse. "Our website has been updated with a fresh, new look and even more details about the track, including sections for driver and fan info, as well as a section for our t-shirts, hats and other branded merchandise."
 
The track's promotional team has put together an exciting line-up for the upcoming calendar, including the return of the always popular Double Toonie/Fan Appreciation Nights – June 8th, 29th and August 17th – with $4.00 grandstand admission. Peterborough Speedway will once again play host to the APC Late Model and Dayco Super Stock Tours Saturday, June 15th. After last season's rainout, the Ontario Outlaw Super Late Model Series will return for the Mid-Season Bash Saturday, July 13th. Tirecraft presents a 100-lap headliner for the Ontario Sportsman Series Saturday, July 27th. The website has all the details for the 2024 calendar.
 
As always, the local racing scene will conclude with the running of the APC Autumn Colours Classic. With close to a dozen different divisions on the agenda, this year's 31st annual edition is slated for October 11th through 13th and will be one of the season's most anticipated short-track racing events.

Airborne Park Speedway begins writing a new chapter

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Airborne Park Speedway begins writing a new chapter in its long and storied history on Sunday, April 28, at 5:00 p.m. The track's 70th season of stock car racing opens with the "Leon Gonyo Memorial" event and a special 40-lap, $4,444-to-win race, kicking off a new promotional era that has garnered an entire off-season's worth of positive attention from both the local Plattsburgh, N.Y., community and the racing industry.

Airborne Park Speedway's operations are now under the management of former multi-time track champion driver Mike Bruno, who, along with his wife Alayne, has successfully owned and promoted Vermont's Devil's Bowl Speedway since 2012. Airborne's special Sunday-night opener leads into an exciting, all-new "Thursday Night Thunder" weekly schedule on the 4/10-mile dirt track from May to September. Fans are encouraged to attend in person, but as an alternative, every event in 2024 will be streamed live on DirtTrackDigest.TV.

The Be Cool Heating & Air Conditioning "358" Modified division will headline weekly competition at Airborne Park Speedway in 2024, and the North Country's biggest racing stars are expected to be on hand for Sunday's 40-lap, $4,444-to-win lid-lifter. The race is named in honor of the late Leon Gonyo, a former Airborne champion, whose No. 4 racecars were a staple in the region until his passing in 2015.

Reigning king Chris Raabe will begin his title defense on Sunday, but the Alexandria, Ont., native will have plenty of company in an international battle at the front of the field. Among the top American and Canadian drivers expected to challenge Raabe are former Airborne track champions Steve Bernier, Patrick Dupree, and George Foley, former Super DIRTcar Series champion Tim Fuller, and local favorites like Mike Mahaney, brothers Félix and Jeremy Roy, Carey Terrance, Matt Woodruff, and Justin Stone, to name just a few.

The J&S Steel Sportsman Modified class will also have a big race on Sunday, with a 30-lap, $1,200-to-win feature; more than 30 drivers have registered to compete weekly at Airborne in the Sportsman division, and as many as 40 are expected to race on Sunday. In addition, the weekly 9th State Cannabis Renegade and Mini Stock classes will begin their championship seasons, and the non-weekly Limited Sportsman division will make a special appearance.

Racing begins at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. Pit area gates open at 12:00 noon, grandstand gates open at 3:00 p.m., and hot laps begin at 4:00 p.m. Grandstand general admission is $15, and free for children aged 12 and under. With a solid line-up of weekly classes and special guest divisions, Central Ontario motorsports fans are looking forward to the 2024 schedule and Making Memories for Life at Peterborough Speedway.

 

Action kicks-off with the Pure Country 105 Season Opener – featuring free spectator grandstand admission – Saturday, May 18th. The green flag flies at 5:00 on a line-up that includes Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, SwitchTire Mini Stock, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck, Jiffy Lube Super Stock and KOD Disposal Late Model racing, plus the Trailers Plus Ontario Legend Car Series, with a Fan Appreciation driver autograph session at intermission.

 

"The long hours and hard work of the off-season come to fruition when we unlock the gates on opening night," said Peterborough Speedway track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse. "We're looking forward to a strong season of action and can't wait to get everything started for our 2024 campaign."

 

With a legacy spanning close to 60 consecutive years of weekly operation, it is ironic that one of the most popular divisions at the venue known as Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile is also one of its newest. Since its inception just over 2 years ago, the Kingsway Auto Centre Junior Late Model class continues to grow.

 

In 2023, a stellar field showed their stuff throughout the regular season and during the annual Autumn Colours Classic showcase. Lucas Cousineau scored the point championship in the Pro Junior Late Model ranks, while Avery Kirkpatrick took the Junior Late Model crown. In total, nearly 25 different racers made at least one start in the class during the year. With 9 appearances on the schedule for the upcoming campaign and new drivers expected to join the fray, it is expected that fans will continue to cheer on these talented young drivers.

 

Bullring bullet points: In response to numerous inquiries, track staff has announced dates for a pair of pre-season open test sessions. The first will be Saturday, May 11th from 11:00 'til 4:00. Teams can also put their equipment through its paces Thursday, May 16th from 4:00 'til dusk. Admission for either practice session will be $25.00 for car and driver. $15.00 per crew member.

Local racetrack operators never stop working toward the goal of giving fans the best show for their family entertainment dollar. Shortly after introducing a new design for their www.peterboroughspeedway.com website, the popular Central Ontario oval's promotional team is happy to announce that they will once again have cars on display at Lindsay Square.

 

From April 28th to May 5th, fans will have the opportunity to pick-up a copy of the track's weekly event schedule and see the 2024 rides of 3rd generation KOD Disposal Late Model runner Jacob Mercer and the unveiling of the No. 99 of Kingsway Auto Centre Junior Late Model rookie of the year hopeful, 11-year-old former go karter Brody Coates. The No. 38 Mini Stock of Carol 'Duckie' Dawson – who finished 6th in last year's point standings – will also be part of the show. Peterborough Speedway owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse days having cars at the mall is a tradition that has been part of the speedway's publicity itinerary for several decades, spanning multiple generations.

 

"We're thankful to the team at Lindsay Square for welcoming the race teams and our fans for this pre-season event once again this year," explained Josiasse. "Shows like this are an excellent marketing opportunity for racers, the track and the sport of local weekly auto racing."

 

Everything is getting closer and fans are counting the days 'til the 2024 season opener Saturday, May 18th and looking forward to getting another year of local racing underway and taking another step toward 'Making Memories for Life'. The Pure Country 105 Season Opener offers free spectator grandstand admission and a complete program with 5 home track divisions, plus the Ontario Legend Car Series. Grandstand gates open at 3:00, with the first green flag of the schedule at 5:00.
