NASCAR Fines Kyle Busch; Places Him On Probation For Remainder Of Year

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 7, 2011) – NASCAR has fined Kyle Busch $50,000 and placed him on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31 for his actions during the Nov. 4 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway.

 

Kyle Busch violated Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) of the 2011 NASCAR Rule Book. NASCAR took immediate action, parking Busch for the remainder of Friday night’s event and maintaining the parked position for the NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. On Monday, the parking directive was lifted by NASCAR.

 

In issuing Monday’s penalty, NASCAR went on to say that “if during the remaining NASCAR events in 2011 there is another action by the competitor that is deemed by NASCAR officials as detrimental to stock car racing or to NASCAR, or is disruptive to the orderly conduct of an event, the competitor will be suspended indefinitely from NASCAR.”

Self-Taught Canadian Ossowski Veteran Member of Hendrick Engine Staff

Assembler Hopes To See Championship Winner Yet Again

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 7, 2011) — Hendrick Engines, winner of the past two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races powering Tony Stewart’s No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet is in the thick of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup™ – and has been for the past five seasons with Jimmie Johnson.

 

Stewart, who trails points leader Carl Edwards by three points, won Sunday’s AAA Texas 500 to claim the race’s Mahle Clevite Engine Builder of the race for the second week in a row for Stewart-Hass Racing. The award is based on a points system totaling qualifying and finishing positions. Bonus points are also awarded for leading the most laps. Hendrick’s Jeff Gordon also scored in the contingency award category as the sixth-finishing No. 24 Chevrolet’s crew chief Alan Gustafson won the Moog Chassis Parts Problem Solver of the Race nod.

 

Hendrick engine room assembler Andrew Ossowski is proof positive that you learn by doing. The self-taught, 48-year-old native of Brigham, Quebec, Canada, has honed his craft at the highest level as one of 30 members of Hendrick Motorsports’ engine department, headed by Jeff Andrews.

 

A Hendrick employee since 2000, when he was hired by the late Randy Dorton, Ossowski climbed the ladder from a high school machine class to the old NASCAR North Series, an Indianapolis car team and finally his own engine building shop in Grandby, Quebec.

 

He followed his older brother to Hendrick and the mentorship of the legendary Dorton, one of the first to use the “cause and effect” approach to building engines and diagnosing problems. Ossowski and his colleagues will have assembled and freshened some 700 engines at this stage of the season for the four Hendrick teams and the company’s customers that include Stewart-Haas Racing.

 

“He (Dorton) opened up my eyes on how you go about fixing problems,” said Ossowski, who with wife Ann Marie Venneman has three children. “He always dug deeper into cause and effect and how to trouble-shoot issues. We build to very tight specifications. Every engine is the same down to every single bolt and torque pattern. If you have a problem, you can diagnose back.”

 

Neither Ossowski nor his colleagues build for specific teams. The choice, off the rack so to speak, is up to the crew chief. The assemblers find out later if their engine was the one that carried Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt Jr. or a customer such as Stewart-Haas Racing to a high finish or Victory Lane.

 

Ossowski’s engines have a victory with Gordon at Talladega and brought Johnson his first Coors Light Pole at Daytona. Earnhardt’s Wrangler Chevrolet claimed the first win by a NASCAR Nationwide Series new car in 2010 at Daytona.

 

The Canadian worked directly with General Motors’ engineering staff on the development of the company’s R07 engine. Casey Mears’ Coca-Cola 600 victory in 2007 marked the engine’s first NASCAR Sprint Cup victory. “Throw me a challenge; that elevates me,” Ossowski said.

 

His current project is electronic fuel injection slated to replace carburetion beginning with the 2012 Daytona 500. “We started with a clean slate eight months ago and it’s a (major) undertaking,” he said. “We have to tailor it to the needs of the driver to make the smoothest, cleanest accelerating engine (while) creating a package that’s reliable.”

 

Having a limited number of opportunities to actually test the EFI system on track is a challenge both for Hendrick and the other NASCAR Sprint Cup teams. “Dynos don’t represent the real world,” said Ossowski. “We discover so many problems going to the race track. You really hope you get the most of the tests we have (because) a 25-lap run might not produce the problems you could encounter in a 48-lap run.”

 

With two races remaining in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup™ competitors move to Phoenix International Raceway for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500. (ESPN live 3 p.m. EDT).

PASS North recognizes racers at annual Banquet of Champions

Naples ME (11/7) Pro All Stars Series racers, teams, sponsors and fans packed the Howard Johnson's Conference Center in Westbrook Maine Friday evening to celebrate the 2011 season, a festive night of awards, food and socializing.

 

Mike Mayberry filled in for series President Tom Mayberry at the podium, kicking off the ceremony with the Presidents special recognition awards. The PASS Mods Sportsmanship award was presented to Alan Wilson; Sumner Sessions received the Hard Luck Award and the Most Improved driver of 2011 was Dana Reed. The PASS Sportsman were up next and Donnie Morse earned the Sportsmanship Award, the Hard Luck driver was Shane Tatro and Craig Smith was Most Improved. Alex Gingras earned the title of Most Improved driver in the PASS North Super Late Model series, Joey Doiron was recognized for the Hard Luck he experienced in 2011 and Maritime racer Matt Matheson earned the Super Late Model Sportsmanship award.

 

Rookie of the Year honors were up next, with Spencer Morse capturing the Sportsman series Rookie crown, and Mark Lundblad Jr. claimed the award in the PASS Mod series. An unusually strong Rookie of the Year crop in the PASS Super Late Models led to Co-Rookies of the Year being named. Lonnie Sommerville and Kyle DeSouza shared the podium for this award.

 

Then it was time for hardware and check presentations to all the qualifying drivers, speeches from PASS Mod Champion Andy Shaw, PASS Sportsman titlist Carey Martin and 2011 PASS North Super Late Model Champion Johnny Clark. Both Shaw and Martin are now two-time champions in their respective division, while Clark now has six PASS North Super Late Model titles on his resume, including the last four.

 

The PASS South and PASS National Championship series will wrap up their 2011 campaigns at Concord (NC) Speedway on November 25 and 26 with the Thanksgiving Classic/Mason-Dixon Meltdown.

Ben Rowe Wins PASS South Over the Mountain 150 at Hickory Motor Speedway

Maine Racer Now All-Time Wins Leader in the South Super Late Model Series

 

The Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South headed back to the famed Hickory Motor Speedway (NC) on Saturday, October 29th, for the Over the Mountain 150 Super Late Model event, the second to last race of the 2011 season. Despite not being in the championship hunt, Maine racer Ben Rowe survived the event, claiming the win and earning the honors of the all-time wins leader in the South Super Late Model series.

 

With over 40 cars on hand, just qualifying into the event was a premium for most racers. Taking fast time was Alex Fleming with a 14.807-second lap. He was followed by Andy Loden, Kyle Grissom, Bradley McCaskill and Rebecca Kasten. The balance of the field was determined by qualifying times and a last-chance qualifier to fill the 28-car field.

 

After the top-10 redraw, Grissom led the field down to the green flag with Jared Marks alongside. Grissom led the early laps with Marks, Loden, Kevin Floars and McCaskill in tow. The first yellow flew early at lap 13 after Roger Lee Newton, who won earlier this year at Orange County Speedway (NC), broke a rear end on his car.

 

On the restart, Grissom and Loden battled side by side for the lead for a few circuits until Loden put his machine out front. While Loden held the top spot, positions jockeyed behind him within the top 10. Kasten was able to work her way to the second position, then on lap 41, she made her move, taking the lead before the yellow flew a second time at lap 44, which involved Dean Clattenburg and John Batten. At the yellow, Kasten led Loden, Cling, Marks and Preston Peltier.

 

On the following restart, a chain reaction forced another yellow, which involved many drivers, including championship points leader Jay Fogleman, Jimmy Weller, Steven Legendre, Gray Gaulding, Logan Ruffin, Daniel Hemric and others. Some cars were able to continue while others were done with heavy damage.

 

Loden was able to get the lead on the restart, but Kasten drove back by for the lead at lap 50, bringing Cling and Peltier by Loden for position on the track. Over the next 25 laps, Kasten paced the field while drivers looked to improve their position.

 

At lap 75, Marks slowed on the track, bringing out the yellow flag. Loden pitted during the yellow with a soft tire, putting him at the back of the field.

 

Peltier and Kasten traded the lead throughout several green-flag laps and cautions while Rowe, who started in the 12th position, slowly worked his way to the top five. With Peltier out front and pulling away in the final third of the event, Kasten dropped back a few positions and ended up spinning out after contact with Ryan Blaney, who was second in points entering the event, bringing out the yellow at lap 117. Blaney later had a broken axle, which cost him multiple laps to the leaders, finishing outside the top 10.

 

As Peltier and Trey Mitchell were lining up for the restart, contact between the two caused Mitchell to head to pit road and Peltier to drop back when the green flew, eventually spinning out with a flat tire. Rowe was then the leader with Cling and Jody Lavender in the top-three positions with 25 laps remaining.

 

Despite a few more yellow flags, Rowe was able to hold on to the top spot to win the event. Loden was able to work his way back to the second position after pitting earlier in the race for a tire issue while Cling crossed the line in third. Hemric ended up fourth with Heath Hindman rounding out the top five.

 

Rowe, who is already the current career wins leader in the PASS North Super Late Model Series, took over the honors in the South with the victory, his seventh-career PASS South win.

 

The PASS South Super Late Model Series will be back in action for the Mason Dixon/Thanksgiving Classic at Concord Speedway (NC) November 25th and 26th, 2011, where the PASS South and PASS National championships will be determined.

ARCA Racing Series Sets July 1 Date for 2012 Road Course Race at New Jersey Motorsports Park

(TOLEDO, Ohio) - Road course action is in the plans yet again for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, as the series will visit New Jersey Motorsports Park's Thunderbolt Raceway for the fifth consecutive year on Sunday, July 1, 2012.

 

ARCA and New Jersey Motorsports Park officials reached an agreement this week to bring stock car racing's most versatile series back to the 14-turn, 2.25-mile circuit in southern New Jersey, less than 50 miles south of Philadelphia.

 

 "The ARCA Racing Series has long been recognized for the diversity in the types of venues on the schedule," said Ron Drager, ARCA president. "Racing at New Jersey again in 2012 once again gives our schedule a full range of venues, also including paved short tracks, superspeedways, intermediate tracks, and the mile dirt state fairgrounds ovals. We're looking forward to another visit to New Jersey Motorsports Park."

 

Entering its 60th anniversary season, ARCA has hosted 15 road course races. The first occurred at Meadowdale Raceway in Illinois in 1958, and Andrew Ranger won in the most recent - his ARCA debut - at New Jersey in May. Ranger, driving a car fielded by Northeast owner Robert Torriere, completed a daring pass over George Miedecke just before the white flag to create one of the season's most exciting finishes.

 

Before Ranger this spring, Justin Allgaier (2008), Patrick Long (2009), and Casey Roderick (2010) won ARCA Racing Series events at New Jersey.

 

"We're pleased to welcome back the ARCA Racing Series for the fifth consecutive season in 2012," said Brad Scott, general manager of New Jersey Motorsports Park. "ARCA is such an exciting weekend for race fans in New Jersey, especially this year's race that came down to the final lap between two road course aces. We hope to feature that same excitement on a new date next year."

 

New Jersey Motorsports Park officials are working toward scheduling a lineup of support races to give race fans even more value on the ARCA Racing Series weekend. 

 

Other 2012 races with dates confirmed by the ARCA Racing Series include the season opener at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, February 18, and ARCA's first trip to Mobile International Speedway on Saturday, March 10. More detailed schedule information for the season will be available shortly.

 

The ARCA Racing Series will wrap up the 2011 season with the Championship Awards Banquet at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Ky., near Cincinnati, on Saturday, December 10.

 

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards featured 19 events at 16 tracks on its 2011 schedule. The series has crowned an ARCA national champion each year since its inaugural season in 1953, and has toured over 200 race tracks in 28 states since its inception. In 2011, the series has tested the abilities of drivers and race teams over the most diverse schedule of stock car racing events in the world, visiting tracks ranging from 0.4 mile to 2.66 miles in length, on both paved and dirt surfaces as well as a left- and right-turn road course.

 

Founded by John Marcum in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio, the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) is recognized among the leading sanctioning bodies in the country. Closing in on completing its sixth decade after hundreds of thousands of miles of racing, ARCA administers over 100 race events each season in two professional touring series and local weekly events.

Region's racers buzzing after Devil's Bowl Speedway "Town Meeting"

RUTLAND, VT -- The northeastern stock car racing community is buzzing about Devil’s Bowl Speedway.  Nearly 150 drivers, team owners, and crew members gathered Sunday at the track’s first “town meeting” to discuss the West Haven, VT facility’s future.

 

Meeting with new Devil’s Bowl Speedway owner/promoters Mike and Alayne Bruno in a segmented, open-forum summit that lasted more than five hours, racers from all over Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire expressed suggestions, concerns, and progressive ideas to lead the track into the future.

“I am honored by the turnout that we had here for the Devil’s Bowl town meeting,” said Mike Bruno, who spoke with competitors at the Holiday Inn-Rutland in Rutland, VT.  “The support already being shown for our new effort is overwhelming.  Everyone knows that we’ve got work to do, but it appears that the racers want to work together and with us as managers for the betterment of everyone.  That’s very, very important.”

The town meeting was broken into three segments -- the open-wheel Modified division, full-fender asphalt Late Models, and a combined meeting for eight-cylinder Renegades and four-cylinder Bombers -- with questions asked and answered specific to each group.  Items discussed included rules on engines and tires for each division, race purses, technical inspection policies, race procedure policies, race dates and start times, and ways to bring competitors together as a community.

True to the intent of the first town meeting, few absolute decisions were made by management.  Input was received from nearly every attendee, however, and future meetings will be held during the off-season to discuss matters further.

“The lines of communication are open, and that’s what we wanted to establish,” Alayne Bruno said.  “We were confident before the meeting that we would be able to elevate Devil’s Bowl into, as we’re saying, ‘a place you want to race’ in 2012.  The town meeting backed up that belief.  Sunday was a great day for this race track.”

Dixon, St. James, Tagliani Presenting at IMIS 2011 Youth Safety Conference

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 1, 2011) – Known around the world as the “Racer’s Doctor” for his aggressive treatment of motorsports injuries, Dr. Terry Trammel has assembled an outstanding panel of presenters for the second Youth Safety Conference on Saturday, Dec. 10, part of the third International Motorsports Industry Show (IMIS) Dec. 8-10, 2011, at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis.

Airborne Speedway honors five champions: Martin Roy named "Driver of the Year"

South Plattsburgh, NY – Airborne Speedway Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified champion Martin Roy of Napierville, QC, and Versatile Trailer Sales Renegade champion Kevin Boutin of Fairfax, VT, were named “Driver of the Year” and “Sportsman of the Year” respectively before a large gathering at the Rainbow Banquet Hall in Altona Friday.

 

Robin Wood of Plattsburgh, who successfully defended his J&S Steel Sportsman title in 2011, NAPA Mini Modified champion Speedy Bresette of Plattsburgh and Busch Bomber champion Johnmichael Bresette of Keeseville were also at the podium.

 

Lew Boyd, motorsports publisher and historian, was the keynote speaker. “You’ve got something special here,” Boyd told the audience. “It’s important for the industry to have tracks with quality Saturday night shows and a lot of eyes are upon you.”

 

Boutin is a two-time recipient of the Airborne Sportsman of the Year award. “Mike Perrotte, Steve Fuller and the whole staff have turned Airborne into a great place to race,” he said. “I’m honored to receive this award. It means a lot to me.”

 

Rookie of the Year trophies went to Kris Vernold of Kingsbury/Modifieds, Dave Rabtoy of Swanton, VT/Sportsman, Curt Seymour Jr. of Plattsburgh/Renegades, Josh LaPorte of Peru/Mini Modifieds and Travis Sherman of Plattsburgh/Bombers.

 

“Most Improved Driver” awards were received by Mike Wells/Modifieds, Nick Heywood/Sportsman, Josh Terry/Renegades, Josh LeClaire/Mini Modifieds and Johnmichael Bresette/Bombers.

 

Sally Walker of Rouses Point was the recipient of the Mike Watts Award for outstanding support and service.

La Série Sportsman honore ses méritants.

En ouverture de soirée le maitre de cérémonie M. Marc-Patrick Roy a salué les 215 personnes présentes.

La Série Sportsman Québec a ensuite soulignée l'apport des femmes (Conjointe de pilote ou d’officiel et équipière) à la réussite de leur conjoint soit comme soutient, parfois comme équipière en leur remettant une petite fleur, soit un Astroménis en signe de remerciement et 4 d'entre-elles se sont mérité des cartes cadeaux variant entre 25$ à 150$ des Galeries de la Capitale.Julie Blanchet (spotteur de l'équipe #7) remporte celle de 150$. Hélène Imbeault (Conjointe de Patrick Boyer #3), Valérie Jacques (Équipière et conjointe de Dany Poulin#2) et Francine Vaillancourt (Équipière et mère de Dany Poulin#2) ont été les autres heureuses gagnantes.

 

La Série a souligné le 5e anniversaire de son existence en remettant des plaques souvenirs d'homme de fer à Francis Grégoire #16 de St-Isidore et Jimmy Nadeau #18 de Beauceville pour avoir participé à toutes les finales depuis les débuts de la Série en 2007.

Chez les Constructeurs/Fournisseurs, DGR s'est mérité le prix pour une 2e saison consécutive.

David Gagnon #47 d’Alma mérite le prix de Recrue de l'Année Canadian Tire 2011.

Jimmy Nadeau de Beauceville a été l’un des grands récipiendaires de trophée individuel en remportant le Hard Charger des Entreprises M.P. Roy comme pilote ayant eu le meilleur total de dépassement durant la saison 2011. Il s'empare aussi du titre de Voiture de l'année et d'Équipe de l'année Frameco ltée.

Patrick Boyer #3 de Québec a quand à lui mis la main sur M. Qualification SAAS RACE WEAR 2011. Il a aussi remporté le Re-Skin Five Star offert par PMR et Five Star par voix de tirage. Mais le clou de la soirée pour Boyer et ses supporteurs fût son titre d’Ambassadeur Bestbuy Pièces d’autos Rive Sud 2011.

Le titre de M. Persévérance est revenu à Stéphane Roy #77 de St-Damien. Roy gagne aussi par voix de tirage le UNIT tubulaire PORT CITY RACECARS.

Alex Montmigny #18, âgé 16 ans de Lévis, remporte le titre de Pilote le plus amélioré en 2011.

François Lessard #71 de St-Joseph gagne par voix de tirage la Carrosserie de TYPE « A » offert par AR BODIES pour sa participation à 100% des événements en 2011.

La Série a souligné les 15 premières positions au championnat en leur remettant un part du fonds de points 2011.

Devant une salle en liesse, M. Marc-Patrick Roy a proclamé officiellement champion Simon Roussin #66 de Québec qui a été acclamé par ses paires et les équipiers, commanditaires et conjointes présentent. Simon a invité son équipe à le rejoindre et a tenu à remercier tout particulièrement : « son père Michel de lui avoir fait connaître se beau sport, son équipe de course, sa mère et sa conjointe de tous les jours Catherine Trudeau pour son soutient ».

En terminant, le Promoteur André Poulin a pris la parole pour remercier les officiels, pilotes, équipiers et conjointes ainsi que Lucas Oil commanditaire principale depuis 5 ans et tous les autres commanditaires de la Série pour leur soutien financier aux succès de la Série.

PASS South Returns to Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday, October 29th

150 Laps of Super Late Model Racing Up Next in Penultimate Series Event

 

The 2011 racing season is winding down, but the battle for the championship in the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Model Series South division is far from over as the series returns to Hickory Motor Speedway (NC) on Saturday, October 29th, for 150 laps of racing action in the penultimate event of the year.

 

The championship chase has primarily been between two racers. Cagey veteran Jay Fogleman sits on top of the points with a victory to his credit at the start of the season at Anderson Motor Speedway (SC). His consistency has placed him in the lead with young racer Ryan Blaney trailing by just four points. Blaney earned victories at Dillon Motor Speedway (SC) and Ace Speedway, and has finished ahead of Fogleman in the last five events, helping to close the gap.

 

While it might be a tight two-horse race out front, there are others battling hard within the top 10 to move their way closer to the top. With one win and a slew of pole positions, Andy Loden currently occupies the third position, followed by Preston Peltier and Heath Hindman. Steven Legendre, Jimmy Weller, Gray Gaulding, Justin Wakefield and Jody Lavender are sixth through 10th in the standings.

 

Earlier this year at Hickory Motor Speedway, Fogleman and Blaney finished third and fourth respectively with Stephen Nasse and Peltier claiming the top-two positions in the 150-lap Easter Bunny event. Loden, Legendre and Hindman also landed top-10 finishes, which will lend to an exciting 150 laps of competition on Saturday.

 

Throwing a wrench into the plans of the top drivers in the points pulling off victories are the other series regulars as well as drivers dropping in to see if they can steal a Halloween weekend victory. Daniel Hemric, Rebecca Kasten, Dean Clattenburg, Ryan Moore and Logan Ruffin are just a few looking to be the spoilers.

 

As with all PASS South Super Late Model events, all 150 laps will be completed under green flag conditions, and all restarts will be double file, lending to excitement from green flag to checker.

 

Practice for the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South 150-lap event at Hickory Motor Speedway will take place on Friday, October 28th, starting at 2 PM. On Saturday, October 29th, pit gates open at 12:00 PM with practice starting at 2:00 PM. Time trials will kick off at 4:30 PM with feature racing at 6:00 PM. Legends, Bandoleros, CCS Late Model Sportsmans and the Allison Legacy Series will also be in competition.

Interest Builds For Devil's Bowl Speedway "Town Meeting"

RUTLAND, VT -- Stock car teams from around the northeast have expressed interest in the new era beginning at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in 2012.  Competitors from far and wide plan to attend the first “town meeting” to discuss the future of the Vermont track.

 

The meeting, which is open to anyone who wishes to attend, will be held at the Holiday Inn-Rutland on Route 7 in Rutland, VT on Sunday, October 30.

Business owner and veteran driver Mike Bruno and wife Alayne will finalize the purchase of the half-mile Devil’s Bowl Speedway facility in West Haven, VT, next week and are working around the clock to prepare for the track’s 46th season.

Sunday’s meeting will be segmented into three blocks: Modifieds, 2:00pm-4:00pm; Late Models, 4:00pm-5:00pm; and 8-cylinder Renegades and 4-cylinder Bombers, 5:00pm-6:00pm.  All drivers, crew members, and team owners are welcome to attend, regardless of current division, track, affiliation, or membership.

Among the items to be discussed at the “town meeting” are rules for all race divisions, purse structures, possible sanction affiliation(s), point funds, and schedules.
