Ramstrom rumbles to PASS Thompson win

Thompson CT (7/12) Derek Ramstrom inherited the race lead on lap 62 of Thursday night's Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North California Paints 75 at Thompson (CT.) International Speedway and the home track hero kept DJ Shaw and Travis Benjamin in his mirror to the checkers. Thompson regular Mike O'Sullivan raced home fourth and Cassius Clark survived a wild ride down the front stretch to finish fifth.

Ramstrom put himself in position to win early on, racing in the top five at the fastest track that PASS North visits. At the green it looked like Ben Rowe would finally toss that Gorilla off his back, racing past the all Thompson front row of Larry Gelinas and O'Sullivan. The RMR 4 was flying and the three time Thompson PASS winner was able to hold both Gelinas and Ted Christopher at bay. But on lap 47 the dreaded off song sound of a cylinder heading south suddenly appeared , drop kicking Rowe through the field until his engine finally gave up the ghost on lap 67.

Rowe's misfortune handed Larry Gelinas the lead and the former PASS regular who's found a home at Thompson in Rollie Lindblad's 48 led a ton of Thompson experience in the form of Christopher and Ramstrom. The top three staged a battle royal until it all went sour on lap 62 when contact from Christopher sent Gelinas sliding through the infield grass. Gelinas didn't hit a thing and continued, while race control sent Christopher to the back of the pack for his role in the skirmish..

That left Ramstrom on the point and despite Shaw's best efforts it was the two time Thompson super late model champ on top at the checkers. The victory was Ramstrom's fourth in a PASS super late model and his second at Thompson.

Ramstrom crossed the stripe 2.096 seconds in front of Shaw. Three caution flags slowed the pace to an average speed of 69.433 miles an hour and eleven cars completed all 75 green flag laps. Heat race wins went to Johnny Clark and Gelinas.

PASS North takes a weekend off before heading to Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday July 21 for 150 laps.

Dustyn Evearitt Joins ARCA as Marketing Manager

(TOLEDO, Ohio) - The Automobile Racing Club of America has announced that Toledo native Dustyn Evearitt has joined ARCA's full-time administration staff as marketing manager.

Evearitt, a 2010 graduate of the University of Toledo, previously interned with the Toledo Mud Hens and the University of Toledo athletic program. He will report to George Mergen, ARCA's director of marketing and public relations. Today's Prairie Meadows 200 at Iowa Speedway represents Evearitt's first race at the track for ARCA.

“We're thrilled to have Dustyn join the marketing team here at ARCA," Mergen said. "He brings some solid experience in the sports marketing field from his previous employment with two Toledo-area sports organizations. He will be an integral part of marketing program development, event management, and all the associated trackside activation for ARCA's sponsors."

The Prairie Meadows 200 will air live on SPEED at 9 p.m. Eastern tonight, with live timing and scoring available at ARCARacing.com. All practice activity and Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell is taking place today, and ARCARacing.com will feature live timing and scoring coverage of those sessions as well. The race will be the 11th on the 20-race schedule for 2012.

Thunder Road's 50th Milk Bowl Reaches Record $100,000

Historic Winnings Posted for Marquee Race

Barre, VT – Thunder Road officials have announced that the 50^thAnnual People’s United Bank Milk Bowl on Sunday, September 30^th, will boast winnings exceeding $100,000 for competitors at “The Nation’s Site of Excitement.” It is the highest purse ever posted for the event deemed the “Toughest Short Track Race in America”.

The season-ending event for Barre’s Thunder Road has long been a marquee for Northeast Auto Racing, but the 50^th anniversary will be even more special. The weekend will include a “Reserve Milk Bowl” for up to thirty competitors who do not qualify for the 50^th People’s United Bank Milk Bowl. It will be comprised of a two-segment feature event, as well as a $20,000 purse of its own, with $3,000 going to the winner.

Long time track promoter Tom Curley feels the 50^th anniversary is well worth it.

“For over 50 years Thunder Road’s Milk Bowl has garnered a reputation for racers and fans as one of the most difficult and competitive races in North America,” said Curley. “To celebrate the 50^th running of this event, we felt it was appropriate to raise the stakes and offer anybody who wants to enter an opportunity to race that weekend. The “Reserve Milk Bowl”, with a purse of over $20,000, will give everybody that opportunity,’” he finished.

The drivers were ecstatic to be racing for the most money in Milk Bowl history.

“Wow, that’s just awesome,” remarked 2011 Milk Bowl Champion Brian Hoar. “Most big races for other series are around that $20,000 mark. Man, this is what it’s all about!”

2008 Track Champion Eric Williams was also taken back. “Whoa, that certainly makes it worth my while,” he grinned.

Even Lt. Governor Phil Scott got in on the action saying, “That’s some extra incentive for sure. It really doesn’t get much better than that, everyone is going to want to run it!”

The 50^th Annual People’s United Bank Milk Bowl kicks off with qualifying on Saturday, September 29, and will begin with a 1:00pm post time on Sunday, September 30.

August 4; Poole, Buescher Battle for Championship Points Lead

(TOLEDO, Ohio) - The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards is celebrating its 60^th Anniversary Season in 2012, a major milestone in anyone's book.

And if you read the 'book', you'll note that Pocono Raceway, the "Tricky Triangle" in Long Pond, Penn., has played a major role throughout ARCA's incredible history.

In fact, the upcoming Pennsylvania ARCA 125 on August 4 will mark the 55^th ARCA race on Pocono's 2.5-mile triangular superspeedway since 1983.

The 125-mile race will follow the same-day NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Pocono, making for an impressive double-header event for race fans at track and those watching both events live on SPEED.

Equally impressive is the ARCA Racing Series winners list at Pocono over the year. It includes Tim Steele, Bob Schacht, Mike Wallace, Blaise Alexander, Kerry Earnhardt, Ryan Newman, Casey Atwood, Casey Mears, Scott Riggs, Frank Kimmel, Travis Kvapil, Justin Allgaier, Joey Logano and most recently, current point leader Brennan Poole, who looks forward to returning.

"I feel like we've always got a head start no matter where we go race," said Poole, who drives the No. 25 car for Venturini Motorosports, the same team that sent Logano to Victory Lane at Pocono.

"I'm going to be in a great racecar, the best out there. And Pocono fits my driving style. I think the combination of a great car and a track I really enjoy is what makes our success there.

"At the same time, the coaching I get from Bill and Billy (Venturini) puts me ahead of the game. They both have a lot of laps around that place, and they've really helped me with advice long before I ever saw the place.

"Pocono is the most fun I've ever had on a big track. There's something always going on, and so much to deal with even though you'll get a break through the straight-aways. All the corners are different; there's absolutely no boring element to that place. As fast as we're traveling there, you're on the edge the whole time."

The championship points battle that's been brewing all season most likely helps keep Poole on edge. As of 7-12-12, Poole's point advantage is only 10 points over Roush Fenway Racing development driver Chris Buescher. In the ARCA world, that's only two positions on the track. Furthermore, Buescher, a winner at Toledo and Michigan, has bested Poole's finishes in the last three ARCA races.

On-track activity for the Pennsylvania ARCA 125 starts Friday, August 3 with practice from 1:40 - 3:00 p.m. Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell follows at 5:15 p.m. The Pennsylvania ARCA 125 is scheduled to get underway Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

In addition to live coverage on SPEED, ARCARacing.com will feature live timing and scoring of all the ARCA on-track activities.

Kawartha Speedway 2012: That's Just Fan-tastic

From the big leagues of motorsports to the show at your local racetrack, every fan has a favourite driver. Someone they cheer for week after week. A special driver they love to see turn laps on the track. They may not be the fastest car out there or ever make it to victory lane, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a cheering section following their every move. After a mid-season break Friday, July 13^th, Kawartha Speedway’s next night of action – Friday, July 20^th – is all about the fans.

The annual Fan Appreciation Night features an on-track autograph and meet n’ greet session with drivers in all 3 regular classes, in addition to a full evening of racing with the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models, Thunder Cars and a 50 lap invitational event for the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks. The Fraserville oval’s entry level class turns in some of the track’s best racing and often run their feature races without a yellow flag.

There’s nothing flashy about Dan Demers. The Cavan, Ontario racer wheels his #67 Goodwin Metals/Ricky’s All-Day Diner Honda Prelude Mini Stock exactly the same way he has since he first climbed behind the controls. He knows he may never win a race and most nights, gives-up the starting position he picks in the pre-race draw to fire up near the rear of the field and stay out of the way of the faster cars in the field. Always smiling, Demers races to have fun and happily shares a story from a race night during the 2011 season.

“Our clean-up crew was on the track taking care of some debris in one of the corners and the pace car brought us down pit road for a few laps,” said Demers, who is 10^th in points after 3 nights of action. “On the second time through, I actually stopped in victory lane to have a look around. I figured I’ll probably never wind-up there after a race and I wanted to see what all the excitement was about.”

As always, gates open Friday, June 20^th at 3:00 with rotating practice rounds getting underway at 5:00. The night’s first green flag is at 7:00.

Kawartha klips: The OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model/OSCAAR Modified events that were rained-out Friday, June 1^st will be made-up Friday, September 7^th. The show will also include the year’s final appearance by the Ontario Legends Series and the second 50 lapper for the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks...Thunder Car teams run 50 lap main events Friday, July 27^th and August 24^th. NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models have a 100 lap invitational Friday, August 17^th. The annual running of the 75 lap OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model Don Biederman Memorial is Friday, August 10^th. Sweet Flies High, Steals Second Governor's Cup

Badore, Whitcomb Bounce Back for Feature Victories

Barre, VT – Barre’s hometown hero Nick Sweet continued a dominating 2012 with a dazzling victory in the Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 presented by the VT Lottery Commission at Thunder Road on Thursday (July 12). Sweet was hounded by defending Champion Dave Pembroke, and perennial front runner Scott Payea picked up third place. Young sensation Cody Blake crossed the line fourth, with 2011 Governor’s Cup winner John Donahue rounding out the top five.

American Canadian Tour front-runner Joey Polewarczyk Jr., snatched the early lead from the second starting position, but it only took 6 laps for Sweet to pull to the front from fourth. Sweet dominated the next 46 circuits, looking well on his way to victory, when he stunned the large hometown crowd and pitted on a lap 53 caution, taking the top five with him and leaving East Montpelier’s Cris Michaud at the point. Michaud spent the next 46 laps in a duel with South Burlington’s Trampas Demers, but it was all for not when the familiar #88 of Sweet returned to reclaim the lead on lap 100 of the 150 lap event, and went on to power through a late race surge from Pembroke to take the Governor’s Cup by just .365 seconds. Top Vermont State Championship Series runners Brent Dragon, Phil Scott, and Ricky Rolfe struggled to 16^th, 22^nd, and 21^st place finishes respectively.

“Man, I was just happy to see it over here at the end,” said a breathless Sweet. “Our strategy really worked well, it’s a great night for us,” he finished.

Polewarczyk recovered to take home sixth, and Eric Chase, Cris Michaud, Chip Grenier, and defending ACT Champion Brian Hoar rounded out the top ten. The race was slowed by just five cautions, one of which was for a mid-race spin on the backstretch for Hoar. The 30 car field completed the race just in 58 minutes and 55 seconds.

Sweet had already been invited to the ACT Bond Auto Invitational on Saturday, September 22 at New Hampshire International Speedway with his Memorial Day Classic win.

Milton’s Eric Badore paved the way to victory in the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen, diving underneath Barre’s Scott Coburn on lap 18 to charge to the checkers. High-point driver Jason Allen sliced and diced the 23-car field to continue his hot streak and unofficially reclaim the point lead with his third place finish. Wolcott’s Brendan Moodie Jr. took home fourth, and Hinesburg’s Bobby Therrien powered his way to round out the top five.

Badore was relieved to be back in victory lane. “We’ve just had so much bad luck this season. The broken transmission, the wrecks, and finally we just had an awesome ride tonight,” said Badore.

Redemption finally came to Elmore, VT’s Dave Whitcomb, who avenged a tough 2012 season with a dominating victory in the Allen Lumber Street Stock Division. Whitcomb expertly sliced through heavy lap traffic, fighting off a hard charge from Morrisville’s Jamie Davis and top ranked rookie Dean Switser Jr., in the closing laps. Last week’s victor Emily Packard came home fourth and Justin Town rounded out the top five.

“It’s just been such a tough year for us, “said Whitcomb smiling. “But this just feels so good. It just makes it all worthwhile,” he finished.

ON CLOTURERA LA PREMIÈRE MOITIÉ DE SAISON,

SAMEDI SOIR, AU CIRCUIT STE-CROIX/RIVERSIDE SPEEDWAY

C’est par la présentation de l’AIM Québec 150 qui sera disputé, samedi soir au circuit Ste-Croix/Riverside Speedway que prendra fin la première moitié de saison dans la série ACT-Castrol. Cette fois, cette épreuve sera courue en deux étapes de 75 tours. Le résultat inversé de la première servira à déterminer la grille de départ de la seconde.

Jusqu’à présent en cinq manches, quatre pilotes différents ont paradé dans le cercle des vainqueurs, soit Donald Theetge (2), Karl Allard, Patrick Laperle et Jean-François Déry. Theetge est toujours installé au premier échelon du cumulatif malgré sa sixième place à l’Autodrome St-Eustache. Le pilote Auto Frank & Michel possède une fiche de 495 points. Il a terminé à quatre reprises parmi les cinq meneurs et devance Patrick Laperle par 23 points alors que ce dernier a une priorité de 14 points devant Déry qui est revenu en troisième position.

Quant à Allard, il est maintenant en sixième position avec 401 points et il est devancé par Dany Trépanier et Dave Michaud. Patrick Hamel, Patrick Cliche, la recrue Étienne Cliche et Gaétan Lauzier complètent le peloton des dix premiers au cumulatif.

En juin dernier, c’est le trio des favoris, Donald Theetge, Patrick Laperle et Karl Allard qui s’était emparé du podium d’honneur alors que Dave Michaud et Patrick Cliche avaient complété le peloton de tête. Nul doute que l’on favorisera un de ces pilotes pour l’emporter.

Surprise

À pareille date l’an dernier, les amateurs du circuit Ste-Croix/Riverside Speedway avaient été témoins d’une agréable surprise alors que Patrick Hamel de Ste-Croix-de-Lotbinière avait profité de sa présence devant les siens pour décrocher son premier succès dans cette série ACT-Castrol. Cette année, il semble éprouver un peu plus d’ennuis, car en cinq confrontations, il s’est classé seulement en une occasion parmi les cinq premiers.

Cependant son concitoyen Dany Trépanier roule très bien cette saison et il ne serait pas surprenant de le voir, lui aussi, profiter de ce AIM Québec 150 pour décrocher un premier triomphe.

Cette épreuve a une particularité non négligeable, elle sera disputée en deux manches et cela risque de compliquer les choses pour les participants. Il faudra une mécanique très au point. Cette situation pourrait être bénéfique pour des pilotes que nous ne sommes pas habitués de voir sur le podium d’honneur.

Au même programme, les amateurs pourront être témoins de la deuxième manche de la Triple Couronne Bestbuy en Sport Compacte ainsi que des épreuves pour la série Vintage et Kamikaze. L’admission générale est de 25 $.

Soirée Lightning Sprint

Les spectaculaires petits bolides Lightning Sprint seront à l'Autodrome Granby pour une troisième visite cette saison. Beaucoup d'action en vue puisque les pilotes Modifié et Sportsman seront aussi en piste pour une finale de 50 tours.

Les Lightnining : Simon Couture défend bien son titre.

Simon Couture (#34) est l'homme à battre dans la catégorie Lightning sprint, il a mérité les honneurs en 2009-2010 et 2011. Il a aussi remporté la victoire à deux reprises à Granby cette saison. Pierre-Yves Joyal a remporté samedi dernier à Drummondville sa première victoire en carrière…. Sera-t-il en mesure de mériter les honneurs sur la piste de la rue Cowie ? Une finale de 20 tours sera présentée.

Jocelyn Roy (#48) est roi et maître sur le circuit, il a mérité 3 victoires à Granby cette saison. François Adam a quant à lui mérité 2 victoires à Granby et il montre souvent à Jocelyn Roy qu'il est prêt pour une chaude lutte. La rivalité est palpable entre les deux pilotes. Une finale de 25 tours est prévue au calendrier.

Les Sportsman : Nombre exceptionnel de voitures à chaque programme

Souvent plus de 30 voitures sont dans les puits de ravitaillement, cette catégorie est toujours très populaire. Les pilotes s'en donneront à cœur joie cette semaine puisqu'ils seront en piste pour une finale de 50 tours avec points de championnat. Plusieurs talentueux pilotes sont prêts pour la photo avec le fameux drapeau à damier. Qui sera apte à battre le champion défendant ' Steve Bernier ' ? Guy Ouellette qui n'est pas régulier chaque semaine devrait être présent, on se rappelle qu'il a été victime d'un spectaculaire accident vendredi dernier. Il a mérité la victoire en début de saison à Granby ainsi qu'a Drummondville samedi dernier.

Les Modifié : Un autre champion défendant difficile à déloger

François Bernier (#49) est le seul pilote de la catégorie Modifié à avoir mérité plus d'une victoire à Granby en 2012. Avec ses trois victoires en banque cette saison, il domine le classement avec 44 points de plus que le vétéran Claude Brouillard (#3). 6 gagnants différents en 9 départs cette saison dans la catégorie Modifié. Est-ce qu'on applaudira un nouveau pilote lors de cette finale de 50 tours ? Plusieurs pilotes qui connaissent un début de saison difficile aimeraient monter sur la plus haute marche du podium. Mario Clair (#22), Steve Bernard (#54), Martin Gagné (#87), Yannick Ledoux ( #12) ou le jeune Jean Boissonneault (#61) … qui méritera la victoire ?
