Despite what they might tell you, some racecar drivers are okay with finishing second. Justin Ramsay will never be one of them. After earning the runner-up position in the 2014 Pro Stock division at Brighton Speedway and the Duel in the Dirt challenge series standings, the 27 year old from Rossmore, Ontario says there is nowhere to go but up.

 

With the new campaign at the local 3rdof a mile clay oval set to take its first green flag Saturday, May 2nd the talented wheelman – who has also spent time at the controls of a Comp 4/Mini Stock and Pure Stock machine – has been looking for ways to close the 330 point deficit that stood between himself and a track championship. Ramsay and his team have been burning the midnight oil, fine-tuning his ride for a 2015 title chase. He says the car will be chasing checkered flags all season long.

 

"We had a great year and with some different racing luck on a couple of nights, the point chase could've had a different outcome," said Ramsay, who earns a paycheque as the Service Manager at Empey Tire. "I know what this team is capable and hopefully we'll be able to carry the momentum we built last year into the next agenda."

 

A fan of snowmobiling and four-wheeling away from the speedway, Ramsay says he always looks forward to the opportunity of finding a set-up that will make his car fast on an unfamiliar track. He lists a strong night as an out-of-towner at Brockville Speedway – along with Comp 4/Mini Stock championships in 2006 and 2012 at Brighton – as his favourite racing accomplishments. His #03 machine – with the number chosen for the year his career began – in maintained behind the scenes and at the track thanks to the help of Shelby Mills and Tyler French; with occasional support from Brighton Late Model driver Charlie Sandercock. The driver says he's always willing to try some different things that will take his red rocket to the front of the field.

 

"I'm always at the track to have fun and there isn't much that can replace the rush that comes with hitting the corner at full speed, on the edge of being out of control," confessed Ramsay, who lists Late Model standout Scott Bloomquist as one of his favourite professional racers. "I might push the car a little bit harder than some of the other drivers in the pack, but when we're able to hit on something that works, it makes everything else we've done along the way seem worthwhile."

Special Guests Compliment Peterborough Speedway's Weekly Divisions

With 5 regular divisions running there throughout the season, fans at Peterborough Speedway already see some of the best racing in the province. A number of touring series visit Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval during the year to enhance the overall experience.

 

This year's calendar takes the green flag Saturday, May 16th and features at least 16 events that will count toward the 2015 track championship. Along the way, fans will also see 7 appearances by the Ontario Legends, starting with opening night. The newly branded OSCAAR Midgets are on the schedule Saturday, May 23rd for the first of their 3 regular season stops.

 

Peterborough Speedway has become the home track for the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, with the first of 6 appearances slated for the second night of the year. Fans of the OSCAAR Super Late Models and the OSCAAR Mods will see their favourite divisions tackle the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City. The 'Supers' have a pair of visits outside of the Autumn Colours Classic, while the 'Mods' are part of the pole qualifying event on August 1st. The Can-Am/TQ Midgets and Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup tours pay one visit, on Saturday June 13th and August 9th respectively. Track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse says he's excited about one of the program's biggest events that may actually see him climb back behind the wheel.

 

"Saturday, July 18th we'll host a 100 lapper for the new APC Pro Late Model Series," said Josiasse. "I still haven't made up my mind, but I'm thinking seriously about dusting-off my driving shoes and firesuit. I've turned enough laps around the track with the driving school and in some other vehicles, I think it'll give me at least a little bit of a home town advantage."

 

As always, the biggest event on the schedule is the Autumn Colours Classic. The 23rd edition of the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing – presented by Lucas Oil Products – takes the green flag October 9th, 10th and 11th and annually draws close to 300 entries for the popular festival of speed.

 

Fans can get details on this year's full calendar when Peterborough Speedway has pre-season displays April 10th, 11thand 12th at the 37th annual Kawartha Home, Cottage and Country Show at the Evinrude Centre in Peterborough and April 12th through 18th at the Lindsay Square Shopping Mall.

It may have been close to 10 years between main event wins, but John Owen's OSCAAR Super Late Model victory Saturday, August 30th 2014 at Peterborough Speedway marked the end of a career for the popular Port Hope, Ontario racer.

C'est dans les garages des équipes que l'action se déroule à cette période de l'année pour les équipes de toutes les organisations de course québécoises.

 

Les équipes de l'Association de stock car VINTAGE QUÉBEC ne font pas exception à la règle. La majorité des réguliers de la série sont en pleine période de ''rafraichissement'' de leurs bolides. 

 

Du sang nouveau

En plus des pilotes que nous avons vu évoluer en 2014 et avant, il semble que ne nouvelles figures pourraient bien s'ajouter en 2015. Josée Ratté, la V.P., nous apprenait cette semaine que de nouvelles voitures sont présentement en construction.

 

Du coté des Cantons de l'est, un ancien pilote de la série de camionnettes Procam, Pascal Haman, est à préparer une Plymouth 1972 récemment acquise, tandis que Louison Lapierre, un pilote de la Beauce s'affaire de préparer un bolide de marque Falcon des années 60.

 

Une Chevelle 1968 est également en préparation du coté de Jean-Philippe Baril, alors que Christian Charbonneau, de Calixa-Lavallée,  se pointera aux commandes d'une Camaro 1969.

 

Ces nouvelles équipes ajouteront certainement de la couleur dans l'organisation en s'ajoutant aux autres réguliers. L'ASCVQ espère également le retour des deux pilotes qui ont du déclarer forfait en juin 2014, suite a un sérieux accident qui a ruiné les saisons de Normand Gervais (55 Fl)  et Alain Cyrenne (3).

 

Le calendriers

Le grand manitou de l'ASCVQ, Patrick Verner est à préparer le calendrier 2015 avec les promoteurs des différents autodromes du Québec. Ainsi donc, on sait pour le moment que la saison débutera sur l'ovale d'un tiers de mille de SANAIR le 17 mai. Une autre course est également prévue à cet endroit au cours de 2015. Les pistes de Vallée-Jonction (2) en Beauce et Riverside Speedway, de Ste-Croix seront également des hôtes de l'ASCVQ au cours de la saison estivale. La publication du calendrier 2015  pourra être enfin réalisée lors de la conclusion des discussions  en cours avec les autodromes de Montmagny, St-Eustache et St-Félicien.

 

Les procédures

 

De son coté, le directeur de course, Yves Ladouceur, qui entreprendra une 2e saison au sein de l'ASCVQ est à jeter un dernier coup d'oeil aux procédures de course qui devraient être publiées lors de la réunion printanière qui aura lieu lors des prochaines semaines.

 

Un signaleur pour la série

 

Un nouvel officiel, en la personne de Mario Dulac, a été retenu par le président Patrick Verner et  sera en fonction pour toutes les courses en 2015. Nul doute qu'un signaleur à plein temps, avec les connaissances des procédures de course de la série sera un avantage pour le déroulement des épreuves. M. Dulac a auparavant oeuvré avec des équipes de terre battue et en tant qu'officiel  dans l'ANCA, ainsi qu'en NASCAR weekley series. Du coté des autres officiels, Josée Ratté assumera la direction du système de marquage en compagnie de Francyne Ladouceur. D'autre part, L'ASCVQ est à la recherche d'un directeur technique, ainsi que d'un photographe attitré à la série.

 

C'est donc avec fébrilité que les membres de la direction s'affairent à fignoler les  derniers préparatifs en vue de la 8e saison de l'Association de stock car Vintage Québec qui se mettra en branle le 17 mai.

DJ Shaw Excited To Start Season At Anderson's Peach Blossom Special

CHARLOTTE, NC (March 13) – After a long off season for many teams, especially those in the Northeast and Canada, the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) National Championship Series is set to kick off Saturday, March 21 with the Peach Blossom Special 125 at Anderson Motor Speedway.  This year's event will mark the first time PASS has raced at the Upstate South Carolina facility since veteran Brandon Ward took the checkered flag there in 2012.

            This will also be the first time the defending PASS AIM Recycling Super Late Model champion, DJ Shaw, has ever raced at Anderson Motor Speedway.  The Center Conway, NH native is a coming off a career year that saw him finally capture that first elusive PASS title, including a series leading three wins along the way.  Although Shaw is new to Anderson Motor Speedway, he is excited about the opportunity to once again race in the South in the Peach Blossom Special.

            "I enjoy coming down South to race like this early in the year," says Shaw, driver of the Precision JLM/Dale Shaw Race Cars/Mulkern Excavating #60.  "For one thing, it gets the season started sooner and that's always a good thing.  We're using this more as a test for a car we built during the offseason that has a lot of new ideas and is kind of experimental."

            Shaw is no stranger to early season success in the South, however.  A late race pass in the Easter Bunny 150 at Hickory Motor Speedway last year propelled him to one of the biggest wins of his career.  A win that ultimately kick started his season and got his team focused on competing for the championship in the PASS AIM Super Late Models presented by Kenny U-Pull.

            "To start off with a good run would be huge to give us confidence in the car and a little bit of a notebook heading into the North season," said Shaw.  "It's one of those things where we need to have a good run or we need to do some work on the car to get it back to more of what we're used to working with before the North season starts."

            Shaw will be joined by several of his Northern counterparts at Anderson Motor Speedway including three-time PASS National Champion, Ben Rowe, who competed in the inaugural event there in 2007 and Quebec's Eric St. Gelais.  Local favorite Randy Gentry will be making his first start of 2015, along with PASS South Super Late Model rookie Lucas Jones.  PASS South championship hopefuls Zane Smith, Jody Measamer, Tate Fogleman, and Jimmy Doyle will also be looking to take home the title of Peach Blossom Special winner.

            Action begins on Friday, March 20 with optional practice starting at 3 PM for the PASS Super Late Model, PASS Pro Late Models, USAC Eastern Midgets, and Legends cars.  OnSaturday, March 21 pit gates open at Anderson Motor Speedway at 10 AM with rotating practice starting at Noon, followed by qualifying at 3:30 PM, and feature racing at 5 PM for the PASS Super Late Models, PASS Pro Late Models, USAC Eastern Midgets, and Legends.  Please go to ProAllStarsSeries.com for entry forms and the complete weekend schedule.

NASCAR Inspection

I believe, NASCAR's effort is going to have a direct and harder impact on the smaller (any left?) teams in the garage area.  Race teams have always stretched the limits and gray zones.  That's what NASCAR is all about.

Now, with NASCAR's new announced inspection process (see below), only the large teams - the ones with the big multi-car, Fortune-100 backed teams, will be able (thanks to ressources) to "try", several times, before making it thru inspections and still get to practice.

But, again I could be wrong....

Officials distributed a memo to teams today informing them of the move, which will be in effect starting with this weekend's Campingworld.com 500 atPhoenix International Raceway (3:30 p.m. ET, Sunday, FOX).


Should a team require more than two trips through inspection, the 15-minute penalty would come during the next scheduled practice. It would not be imposed as part of a qualifying session.

The pre-qualifying inspection process has been a source of concern this year as teams adapted to the 2015 rules package.

Waterbury, VT- American Canadian Tour (ACT) fans attending the annual New Hampshire Governor's Cup 150 opening events at the Lee USA Speedway are generally the real winners at the seacoast oval on opening day. Sunday, April 12 will be no exception. History shows that there are many surprises in opening events at the fast 3/8 mile oval.

 

In the ten years running the NH Governor's Cup, there has only been one repeat winner. Eight-time ACT Champion Brian Hoar of Williston, VT won the title back-to-back in 2011 and 2012. In 2009, Hoar and teammate for the event Mike Olsen (N. Haverhill, NH) looked like runaway favorites until Goodyear tire issues took both teams out of winning contention while running in the first two spots during the first half of the event.

 

In 2011 local racer and first time ACT competitor Fulton Mountain finished the race in third and was never to be seen again at an ACT event!

 

Perhaps the biggest surprise for the ACT teams was in 2010 when the rain-postponed event occurred in June, and local weekly racers Miles Chipman and Jeff Labrecque finished in the first and second place spots respectively.

 

"The 2010 event with Miles Chipman and Jeffrey Labrecque was really an important indicator that the ACT Late Model business model of cost contained rules regarding engines, shocks, and tires was still viable. Throughout the late 90's, and into the first half of the new century, there was not much question that we had great parity in the division. During the first half of the 2000's ACT touring for this division became popular, just as it had been in the 80's and mid-90's with the Pro Stocks (Super Late Models). Unfortunately for ACT Pro Stocks, the costs to teams, promoters, and ultimately fans got out of control, and in 1995 that all ended. We have tried to be diligent in keeping our business model of Late Model racing for both weekly and touring interests cost controlled. But as history has taught us, that always brings the challenge for organizers to make sure builders and some teams don't begin to violate the overall intent of a division, in the interest of their personal competitive edge," said ACT President Tom Curley.

 

One of the most emotional wins at Lee USA came when former Thunder Road International Speedbowl Tiger Sportsman division champion Jimmy Hebert (Williamstown, VT), in only his sophomore year, won his first ACT Tour event at the opening season NH Governor's Cup in 2013. Equally impressive that year was the second-place effort by N. Haverhill, NH's Travis Fadden.

 

In last year's event, it became a pack of champions running to the wire. Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, MA won his first opening day event after many tries, and soon-to-become 2014 ACT Champion Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. (Hudson, NH), along with two-time ACT Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr. from nearby Dover, showed why they are championship caliber. They all finished on the podium. The Canadian fans in attendance were not disappointed when Alex Labbe (Ste. Albert, QC) finished fourth and went on to win the 2014 Série ACT Championship. There was also still the "Lee opening surprise run" when Quebecer Stephane Descoste (Oka, QC) pulled off his best U.S. finish in fifth.

 

Following the recent triple 100's as part of the American Racer Challenge Cup at the New Smyrna Speedway in Florida, most fans who attended the February races saw an outstanding performance from Bradley Babb (Windham, ME) in the Joey Laquerre–owned team ride, while Rowland Robinson, Jr. (Steuben, ME) showed he was in race trim entering the new season. 2014 ACT Rookie of the Year Brandon Atkins (Ausable, NY) figured out the fast half-mile by the end of the week. Both he and Emily Packard (E. Montpelier, VT) look to be ready for breakout sophomore seasons beginning at Lee USA.

 

Quebec teams Alex Labbé, Donald Theetge, Stéphane Descoste, and Jonathan Bouvrette are all expected to enter the Lee opening event, in preparation for the opening event of their 2015 Série ACT campaign – the Spring Green 115 at Airborne Park Speedway on Saturday, May 16.

 

Teams will have a full day of practice at Lee on Saturday, April 11. Post time for Sunday, April 12 is 1:00pm.

Upcoming partnerships

 

Discussions are underway with potential partners so that Jean-François Dumoulin can participate in the whole championship.  "There are talks going on for both races in Western Canada, among others. The fact that Louis-Philippe is the 2014 champion opens up doors and our objective is to participate in the whole season, we must, however, find the required financing."

Jean-François Dumoulin will take part in Saturday's NCATS Driver Autograph Session, which takes place from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m., while Sunday's runs are from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Following Sunday afternoon's autograph session – from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. – the NCATS drivers will take to The Johnsonville Stage for a 30-minute Q&A with the fans. During this session, hosted by Dave Bradley – a member of the broadcast team for the NCATS race broadcasts on TSN – the drivers will discuss their news and plans for 2015 and will take questions from the fans in attendance. Series director Alex Nagy will also participate in the on-stage session.

C'est avec engouement que l'aîné des frères Dumoulin s'investit dans ce nouveau projet afin de se démarquer sur les circuits routiers et faire ses classes sur circuits ovales au volant de la Dodge n˚04 Bernier Crépeau / Groupe Bellemare / ACASS.  

 

« Annoncer six courses avant le début de la saison est une première pour moi. Rouler sur circuit ovale c'est vraiment un défi intéressant, d'autant plus dans une série compétitive comme la NASCAR Canadian Tire », partage avec enthousiasme le pilote de la voiture n°04 Bernier Crépeau / Groupe Bellemare / ACASS.

 

Amis de longues dates et partenaires professionnels, Eric Kerub (propriétaire de l'écurie MIA-Motorsports In Action) et Jean-François Dumoulin souhaitaient développer cette association depuis longtemps. « Nous travaillons ensemble depuis plusieurs années. J'ai coaché Eric au début, puis les projets se sont constamment développés au niveau mécanique, ajustement, stratégie, préparation des voitures de la Coupe Micra et autres, c'est vraiment l'fun ! », partage Jean-François Dumoulin. 

« Je connais JF depuis plusieurs années, sa réputation de pilote et d'instructeur est établie. Collaborateur dans plusieurs dossiers professionnels, MIA souhaitait devenir partenaire de Dumoulin Compétition pour que JF puisse participer à une saison complète. L'occasion s'est présentée et nous avons acheté deux voitures performantes lui assurant un volant de qualité pour les premières courses de la saison 2015. »

 

Les bolides achetés par MIA sont ceux pilotés par Alex Guénette en 2014. Au cours de la saison 2015, Dumoulin Compétition pourra d'ailleurs compter sur la collaboration fréquente de King Autosport notamment pour l'ajustement des voitures n°04 Bernier Crépeau / Groupe Bellemare / ACASS (circuits confirmés en page 2).

 

Partenariats à venir

 

Des discussions sont actuellement en cours avec des partenaires potentiels pour que Jean-François Dumoulin puisse participer à l'ensemble du championnat. « Il y a des pourparlers, entre autres, pour les deux courses dans l'Ouest Canadien. Le fait que Louis-Philippe soit le champion 2014 ouvre des portes et notre objectif est d'effectuer la saison complète, toutefois nous devons trouver le financement ».

Jean-François Dumoulin participera aux séances d'autographes et entrevues qui se dérouleront les samedi 14 (15h à 16h) et dimanche 15 mars (12h30 à 13h30). Plusieurs pilotes de la série NASCAR Canadian Tire se joindront à lui le dimanche (13h30-14h), notamment pour la tribune questions-réponses des supporteurs - animée par Dave Bradley (TSN) – au cours de laquelle ils annonceront leur programme de course pour la saison 2015.

NAPLES, ME (March 11) – Oxford Plains Speedway owner and Pro All Stars Series (PASS) President Tom Mayberry is proud to announce an unprecedented title sponsorship for the 42nd Annual Oxford 250 and the PASS North Super Late Models.  AIM Recycling USA and Kenny U-Pull will partner to become the new title sponsors for the 42nd Annual Oxford 250 to be contested on August 28-30 at Oxford Plains Speedway.  And, the PASS North Super Late Models will also enjoy title sponsorship for the first time in series history as AIM Recycling USA and Kenny U-Pull come on board to sponsor the entire 2015 season.  The series will now be known as the PASS AIM Recycling Super Late Models presented by Kenny U-Pull.

AIM Recycling is an international company that is based in Montreal, Canada. AIM is a worldwide leader in metal recycling. AIM currently has 31 locations around the globe and recently opened six Maine facilities in Arundel, Portland, Augusta, Oakland, Bangor and Caribou.  AIM is a privately owned company, the owner is Mr. Herb Black.  Their goal is to continue to expand in Maine and throughout New England.

Kenny U-Pull is a division of AIM and is a used parts super store that offers hundreds of auto parts priced at a fraction of what the consumer would pay from the manufacturer.  They currently have 14 self-service auto parts yards throughout Canada and the USA.  Kenny U-Pull's plan is to open more yards in Maine and throughout New England in the coming year.  Both companies are enthusiastic about the new union with the Oxford 250 and PASS.

The 2015 season for the PASS AIM Recycling Super Late Models presented by Kenny U-Pull will begin on Saturday, April 18 at Oxford Plains Speedway with the Ripley & Fletcher Ford 150.  For the first time ever, the ACT Late Models will be part of a doubleheader with PASS that will also include the PASS Modifieds, Street Stocks and Wicked Cool Midgets.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Goes Full Speed Ahead With an Active 2015 Schedule

From humble beginnings, with a handful of annual events at the former Mosport/Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Speedway oval, the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – has become one of the sport's talked about tours.

 

After a highly competitive campaign that saw only 1 repeat winner in 6 of 8 scheduled 2014 main events, OMRS officials have released an agenda for this season that will see the popular series return to Peterborough and Flamboro Speedways for a combined 11 shows in 2015. The first appearance on the schedule is the Modified Spring Shakedown Invitational – Saturday, May 2nd – at Flamboro. Bill Pickford – who along with Rick Warnes and Randy Hollingsworth make-up the series officials – says releasing the calendar now will give drivers and teams the opportunity to get things ready with sponsorship and marketing plans for the new year.

 

"Since our first ever green flag 5 years ago at Mosport, we've always looked to keep things affordable for the racers," said Pickford. "Rick, Randy and I are out there for every race and we know that a little extra financial assistance for things like tires and fuel can make it easier for everyone. We're expecting about a handful of new teams and several first year runners join the fold this year, so we want to help everyone get their ducks in a row."

 

Pickford continued by saying that after some revisions, the proposed schedule is now confirmed. Management teams at both venues were very accommodating with programs that will run from May to October and make dates available for as many different series and divisions as possible.

 

"One date we're thrilled to confirm is the return of the 'Test a Mod Day' Saturday, June 13th – between 10:00 and 2:00 – prior to the year's second event at Peterborough Speedway," said Pickford. "J.P. Josiasse, Dave Sikma and the team were wonderful hosts last year and gave us the opportunity to put some drivers at the controls of an open-wheeled machine for the very first time. The development program we have with Peterborough Speedway opens the door for some new drivers to see what our series is all about and is a win-win situation for everyone." 

 

Fans can learn about this year's OMRS calendar during the Motorama show – Friday, Saturday and Sunday – March 13th to 15th at the International Centre.
