Waterbury, VT – The 2016 American-Canadian Tour (ACT) season begins in just a month's time on Sunday, April 10, when the ACT Late Model Tour travels to Lee USA Speedway for the New Hampshire Governor's Cup 150. The annual event will kick off a milestone season for ACT in both the United States and Canada.

 

The upcoming season will mark the 25th year of competition for the ACT Late Model Tour, which was created in 1992. Meanwhile, the Quebec-based Série ACT is entering its 10th season, having been born in 2007 out of the former Série National Late Model Sportsman division.

 

Both Tours continue to be among the most sought-after racing series in the Northeastern United States and eastern Canada. ACT will visit 15 different race tracks during the 2016 season, traveling from the banks of the St. Lawrence River to the eastern shores of Long Island Sound. The 13-race U.S. Tour schedule will be contested at 11 different tracks, matching the most in Tour history. Nearly 160 different drivers attempted to qualify for at least one ACT-sanctioned event in 2015, and with a number of changes and additions to the schedule in 2016, that number may grow even larger.

 

Four doubleheaders with the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models highlight the 2016 schedule. The two series will again be part of the season opener for Maine's Oxford Plains Speedway on Sunday, April 17. Additional doubleheader dates include the "Showdown in the Mountains" at N. Woodstock, NH's White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday, July 23; a 100-lap ACT event on Saturday, August 27 as part of Oxford 250 Weekend; and the New England 500 weekend at Scarborough, ME's Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18. The final doubleheader also marks the return of the Fall Foliage 200 to Beech Ridge for the first time since 1989.

 

The Southern New England Tripleheader is another exciting new addition. The three-race series begins at Connecticut's New-London Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday, May 21, before traveling to Massachusetts' Seekonk Speedway on Saturday, July 16. The Tripleheader concludes with the ACT season finale at Connecticut's Thompson Speedway on Saturday, October 15, as part of the World Series of Speedway Racing.

 

The eight-race Série ACT schedule kicks off Saturday, May 21 and features multiple trips to Autodrome St-Eustache, Autodrome Montmagny, and Vallée-Jct.'s Autodrome Chaudiere. Special events for both series include the 8th Bond Auto Parts ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 24 and the 54th Vermont Milk Bowl presented by Northfield Savings Bank at Barre, VT's Thunder Road on Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2.

 

Both Tour championships are expected to be hotly contested during their milestone seasons. Defending ACT Late Model Tour Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr. of Dover, NH and his Bruce Bernhardt–led team will seek their fourth ACT title. They will be challenged by Windham, ME's Brad Babb, a two-time winner in 2015, and Colchester, VT's Scott Payea, who returns to full-time ACT competition with RPM Motorsports. New Hampshire's Kyle Welch and New York's Brandon Atkins showed substantial improvement in their sophomore ACT seasons and will look to become title contenders. The ACT youth movement of recent years will also continue, with up-and-coming teenagers Ryan Olsen and Devin O'Connell ready to run for Rookie of the Year.

 

Série ACT Champion Dany Trépanier of St-Edouard, QC stated in a recent interview that he plans to defend his title. Notable contenders include Boischatel, QC's Donald Theetge, who will seek his first Série ACT title since 2009. Ageless veteran Claude Leclerc, former Rookie of the Year Dave Coursol, Gaetan Gaudreault, and Patrick Boyer are among others who have filed full-season entries.

 

The 25th season for the ACT Late Model Tour begins Sunday, April 10 with the New Hampshire Governor's Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway. A full practice day is scheduled for Saturday, April 9.

WELL REPRESENTED AT MOTORAMA

Several series cars, drivers and officials will be in attendance at the show

TORONTO, ON // MARCH 9, 2016 • Canada's only national professional stock car racing series, the NASCAR Pinty's Series, will once again enjoy a high profile presence at the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo presented by Mothers.

Six current and race ready vehicles will be appearing in various locations throughout The International Centre during the three days of the show.

 

Included in the NASCAR Pinty's Series booth will be the No. 32 Ford Fusion of Alex Labbé and the No. 74 Dodge Challenger of fellow Quebec racer Kevin Lacroix.

 

These two vehicles will provide the backdrop for the Sunday, March 13 NASCAR Pinty's Series driver autograph session that will feature a cross-section of the series' competitors, signing alongside of legendary NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison. The three-time Daytona 500 winner – with 85 career wins, three Daytona 500 victories and a NASCAR championship to his credit – is one of the show's featured guests.

 

This one hour autograph session will immediately follow the NASCAR Pinty's Series Q&A and Allison's appearance on the Johnsonville Stage, the NASCAR on-stage celebrations commencing at 12:30 pm.

 

In addition to the Lacroix/ Labbé vehicles in attendance at Motorama, former series champions DJ Kennington and Andrew Ranger will have their cars on display, along with Cayden Lapcevich as will series newcomer, Adam Martin.

 

Ranger's No. 27 Dodge Challenger will be the highlight of the MOPAR booth, while Kennington's No. 17 Dodge Challenger will be located in the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park display area. For rookie Martin, his new mount will be on display in the Johnsonville Sausage exhibit, adjacent to the Johnsonville Stage, while Cayden Lapcevich's No. 76 Dodge will be in the Sunset Speedway booth.

 

Confirmed and expected racers include: Scott Steckly, Jason Hathaway, Andrew Ranger, Mark Dilley, Alex Labbé, Joey McColm, Adam Martin, Matthew Scannell, Larry Jackson, David Michaud, Bryan Cathcart, Derek Lynch, Cayden Lapcevich, Kevin Lacroix and Gary Klutt.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will head to Alabama on Saturday for the Mobile 150 presented by the Mobile Sports Authority, the inaugural series race at Mobile International Speedway. Below is a statistical look at the performance of the series and selected drivers.

Mobile 150 Race Setup:
• Of the 25 cars scheduled to compete in Saturday's Mobile 150, only three drivers have previous experience at the half-mile oval – Kyle Benjamin, Harrison Burton and Sarah Cornett-Ching.
• Of the entered cars, only six have taken a K&N car to Victory Lane, five in the K&N East and one in the West. They include: Dillon Bassett (East), Kyle Benjamin (East), Collin Cabre (East), Brandon Gdovic (East), Noah Gragson (West) and Jesse Little (East).
• First place in the series standings and the victory will be up for grabs. New Smyrna victor and current points leader, Todd Gilliland, will not be making the trip to Alabama.

History
• Mobile International Speedway opened its doors in 1965 and hosted open-wheel racing from 1966-68.
• It held numerous NASCAR series throughout the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s, including the NASCAR Grand American Series, NASCAR All-American Challenge Series, NASCAR Pro Stock Car Series and NASCAR Southeast Series.

• Austin Theriault finished 24th at the series opener and his aiming to recover in his inaugural showing in Alabama this weekend.

Brandon Murrell is Getting Ready for an Exciting New Season of Action

Brighton Speedway's 2016 calendar gets closer week by week, day by day and even minute by minute. Things get underway with the lid-lifter scheduled for Saturday, April 30th and after finishing 6th in the final Pro Stock point standings, Brandon Murrell hopes to pick-up where he left off at the conclusion of the last 2 seasons.

 

Originally from St. Catharines and now living in Gores Landing, the 22 year-old – who works as a service advisor at the Goodyear Auto Centre in Cobourg – says he's counting the days toward the upcoming season. He and his team have been putting in some long hours in the shop to make sure they're ready when the green flag flies.

 

"We've done a lot with the car since the end of last season," said Murrell, whose resume also includes time behind the wheel of a Comp 4/Mini Stock machine. "Its amazing to see the motivation some success has given this team. We really started to find our rhythm and get everything we could out of the car. Our goal is to take that next step and turn in some consistent runs on a week-to-week basis."

 

A fondness for dirt track racing is hardly a casual thing for Brandon Murrell. While living in the Niagara region, his grandfather Jim Murrell raced in the local Late Model division, while his Uncle Tim helped-out on Ron Smoker's cars at tracks like Merrittville and Ransomville. His father Terry put in time as a crew member for many of the top Northeast Modified teams and his Pro Stock carries the #19, which the reverse of the number used by Billy Decker, one of the most successful runners to ever strap into a Big Block Modified.

 

"One of my favourite things about the sport is being with my racing family at the track each week and seeing our hard work come together," said the driver, who set fast time at Humberstone Speedway's All Canadian event in 2015 and scored one of his 2 feature event wins at Brighton on the same weekend. "My Dad, brother and Mom are all part of the team and really get behind everything we do. They help keep things in perspective and make sure the car is ready when we roll through the pit gates."

 

Brandon Murrell's weekly race program is powered by a General Motors 602 Crate engine and supported by Orange Motorsports KTM, K-D Transmissions, Yorkie's Barbecue, Hannah Motors, Northumberland Stars Hockey, Mayhew Graphics, Tindall Tree Service, Frank Bouwman's Kitchens, GWC Spray Foam and Champion Racing Lubricants.

 

Murrell lists 2013 NASCAR Xfinity Series and 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year Kyle Larson as his favourite professional racer and says he'd like to see a race at Volusia Speedway. Away from racing, he enjoys playing hockey.

Pole position et podium pour Nick Wittmer au Texas !

 

Laval (Québec), le 5 mars 2016.- Nick Wittmer et l'équipe Ste-Rose Honda disputaient ce week-end le premier événement 2016 de la série SCCA World Challenge, sur le Circuit des Amériques à Austin, au Texas. Ce tracé, utilisé par la Formule 1 pour le Grand Prix des États-Unis, Nick Wittmer devait l'apprendre mais cela ne l'a pas empêché de réaliser des performances exceptionnelles, récoltant la pole position et croisant le fil d'arrivée d'une des deux courses en deuxième place.

 

Un imposant peloton de quarante-huit voitures étaient en piste pour la course des Touring Car à Austin. Inscrits à l'épreuve avec la Honda Accord V6 Coupe avec laquelle ils avaient pris part aux saison précédentes en Championnat canadien, Nick Wittmer et toute l'équipe Ste-Rose Honda étaient confiants avant ce rendez-vous d'ouverture de saison, malgré la difficulté du défi.

 

« Je n'ai pas participé à la journée officielle d'essais libres, j'ai donc dû apprendre très rapidement le circuit, qui est très long. Mais l'Accord V6 Coupe de l'équipe Ste-Rose Honda était vraiment très performante, j'ai été en mesure de décrocher le meilleur chrono de la séance de qualification dès mon deuxième tour de piste » explique Nick. Cette pole position, sa troisième en carrière en World Challenge mais la première aux commandes d'une voiture de l'équipe québécoise Ste-Rose Honda, fut un exploit souligné par tous les observateurs. 

 

Nick réalisa ensuite un départ parfait, lorsque le drapeau vert fut agité pour la première des deux courses du week-end. Il mena les premiers tours, avant de concéder deux places. Malheureusement, au septième passage, une casse moteur le força à s'arrêter. « C'est la première fois que nous rencontrons un bris de moteur avec l'Accord V6 Coupe depuis nos débuts en compétition avec cette voiture. C'est décevant car je me battais dans un groupe de quatre pilotes pour la victoire » explique Nick Wittmer.

 

L'équipe Ste-Rose Honda et son pilote ne baissèrent pas les bras pour autant. « Mon frère Karl, qui ne pilotait pas à cet événement et accompagnait notre équipe, a fait le tour du paddock et a trouvé un pilote américain qui avait eu un bris d'embrayage durant la première course et qui ne prévoyait pas réparer pour disputer la seconde course. Nous avons donc offert de lui acheter son moteur et il a accepté » confie Nick.

 

Tous les membres de l'équipe Ste-Rose Honda ont travaillé d'arrache-pied durant la nuit pour enlever le moteur de la voiture de Nick, puis démonter le moteur de l'autre voiture et le remonter dans la voiture du pilote québécois. « J'ai seulement dormi quatre heures mais ce n'est pas grave. L'important était de pouvoir participer à la seconde course ! » mentionne Nick Wittmer.

 

Quatrième sur la grille, il réalisa un bon départ et gagna des positions rapidement. Il effectua toute la seconde moitié de la course en arrière du Texan Toby Grahovec. « J'ai perdu la deuxième vitesse à sept tours de la fin, ce qui m'a forcé à baisser un peu le rythme » explique Nick, tout de même très heureux de conclure ce premier week-end de la saison par un podium. « C'est donc très prometteur de revenir d'un aussi long déplacement avec une pole position et une deuxième place, qui rapporte de précieux points au championnat » confie-t-il.

 

Pour le chef de l'équipe Patrik Wittmer, c'est une magnifique conclusion à ce premier week-end de la saison aux États-Unis : « la série World Challenge est vraiment très compétitive mais c'est magnifique de voir que notre Accord V6 Coupe et Nick ont été compétitifs tout de suite, au point de récolter la pole position. C'était vraiment un grand moment » confie Patrik, qui ajoute : « on pensait toutefois que tout était fini à l'issue du bris rencontré dans la première course. Mais Karl m'a poussé à tout tenter pour trouver un moteur. Ce fut une nuit assez incroyable et on a envoyé Nick en piste après avoir aligné la voiture à l'œil, quinze minutes avant le départ de la course ! Mais il a fait un travail exceptionnel, je suis très fier de sa performance et du travail de toute l'équipe Ste-Rose Honda. Pour nous, c'est vraiment une très belle fin de semaine ! ».

 

La prochaine épreuve de la série SCCA World Challenge aura lieu les 21 et 22 mai sur le circuit de Mosport (Canadian Tire Motorsport Park), à Bowmanville en Ontario. Il s'agit du seul événement 2016 de World Challenge présenté au Canada. Deux courses sont à l'horaire pour les voitures de la classe Touring Car. Parallèlement, le Championnat Touring Car canadien (CTCC) débutera ses activités 2016 à cette occasion. Karl Wittmer sera aux commandes d'une Honda Civic Si de l'équipe Lombardi Honda Racing et visera le titre dans la classe Super Touring.

UN PREMIER WEEK-END DE COURSES DIFFICILE POUR SAMANTHA TAN EN PWC

 

AUSTIN (Texas), 7 mars 2016.– Bien préparée physiquement et mentalement, Samantha Tan termine au 7e et 10e rang, lors des deux premières courses du championnat Pirelli World Challenge sur sa nouvelle Honda Civic Si/GPI/OST Racing #38, au Circuit of the Americas à Austin au Texas. Les 12 courses incluent trois classes, TC, TCA et TCB. Les courses de ce premier weekend seront diffusées sur les ondes du réseau CBS Sport Network le jeudi 17 mars, 2016 à 20h00 heure de l'est.

Les sessions de pratique et de qualifications du vendredi furent court-circuitées par des drapeaux rouges et une surchauffe du moteur, causée par une rupture de courroie d'entrainement. Les équipiers de Samantha ont travaillé fort et rapidement pour remplacer la courroie et lui permettre de retourner en piste à temps pour signer le douzième meilleur temps sur la grille de départ, tout juste derrière Patrick Séguin, son coéquipier. 

Un bon départ lancé pour la première course du week-end a permis à Samantha de gagner une position et commencer sa chevauchée vers le peloton de tête. Elle a dépassé plusieurs voitures et s'est frottée à une Miata de la classe TC, plus puissante, qui l'a bloqué sur plusieurs tours. Sa persévérance et sa concentration lui ont permis de terminer la course au septième rang de la classe TCA.

La température pour la deuxième course du samedi était parfaite. Cette fois, le départ était arrêté, les position de départ déterminées par le meilleur temps lors de la course précédente. Samantha s'est élancée de la onzième ligne et a pris quelques position au cours du premier tour. Malheureusement, un concurrent de la classe TC a fait un tête-à-queue juste devant elle au virage 20 et est entré en collision avec sa voiture. Le dommage ne fût pas très grave, mais l'incident lui a fait perdre beaucoup de temps sur le peloton des voitures TCA. Elle a pu garder un bon rythme durant les 45 minutes de la course et terminer au 10e rang, trois positions derrière son coéquipier.

Somme toute, Samantha était plutôt satisfaite de ses performances des deux premières course du championnat PWC à COTA. « Je ne suis pas très satisfaite des résultats du week-end. Je crois sincèrement que j'aurais pu mieux finir, mais en même temps, je m'habitue à une nouvelle voiture et son comportement. Par contre, si je compare ce week-end à l'année dernière ici à COTA, je suis passablement plus heureuse des résultats. J'ai très hâte aux deux prochaines courses à Mosport, ma piste préférée.»

L'équipe de Samantha aura tout le temps nécessaire pour préparer la voiture en vue des prochaines courses. Les troisième et quatrième courses auront lieu au Canadian Tire Motorsport Park près de Bowmanville en Ontario, les 20 et 21 mai prochain. Cette visite en sol canadien sera la seule pour le championnat PWC en 2016.

NISSAN MICRA CUP TO HAVE A SIGNIFICANT
PRESENCE AT TORONTO'S MOTORAMA SHOW

Fast-growing road racing series showcases driver talent in an affordable format

 

TORONTO, ON // MARCH 4, 2016 •The fast-growing Nissan Micra Cup road  racing series will make its Ontario motorsports show debut with an appearance at the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo presented by Mothers. The show takes place March 11, 12 & 13 at The International Centre, across from Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

The 'spec' series took to the track for the first time in 2015. The inaugural schedule featured several events in Quebec, but the new tour made a big impression on the Canadian motorsports scene and demand quickly developed outside of the province. In response, the Nissan Micra Cup will add races at Calabogie and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in 2016.

Series founder Jacques Deshaies and his associates set out to create an affordable, entry-level series that put the focus of driver skill and competition, rather than budgets and horsepower. The Micra Cup cars are virtually 'stock' in nature. Updated suspensions and brake pads are the only notable performance improvements. Otherwise, the engine, gear box, transmission, etc., are all exactly as they come on a base model Nissan Micra.

The result was full grids of identically-prepared Nissan Micra Cup cars, piloted by a wide variety of eager racers, including some of the country's most talented youngsters and experienced veterans.

Some of the familiar competitors who took part in series races last season were: Kevin Lacroix, Stefan Rzadzinski, Marc-André Bergeron and Richard Spénard. Former World Figure Skating Champion Elvis Stojko and journalist Jim Kenzie also took part. In the end, Olivier Bédard emerged as the first-ever Nissan Micra Cup champion.

 


"The idea behind this series was to provide a car that could explore and display the talents of the drivers, rather than having them succeed based on the performance of their cars," explained Deshaies. "These cars are all the same; it's how they're driven that leads to success. I especially believe that this series is the best way for drivers coming out of go karts to learn to properly drive a race car."

With the series' expansion into Ontario in 2016, Deshaies hopes that the Motorama appearance of two Micra Cup entries – provided by Toronto's ALTA Nissan – will attract the attention of potential new drivers and teams looking to get involved in this affordable, ultra-competitive series.

"Last year we built 28 cars. For this year, we should have 35 cars ready to race," continued Deshaies. "Everybody – including our first champion Olivier Bédard – has told me that they're coming back, and the enthusiasm that we saw last year, is growing. Everyone we speak with views the Micra Cup series as a good alternative to open-wheel racing and a good stepping stone into other professional sports car divisions."

Visitors to the Nissan Micra Cup display at Motorama will have the opportunity to get an up-close look at a typical, race-ready Micra Cup car. The booth will also feature a video detailing the series' inaugural year. Jacques Deshaies, former ASQ President and technical advisor Gilles Villeneuve, and several Nissan corporate representatives will also be on hand to answer questions.

Deshaies and Villeneuve will also take part in the Road Racing Discussion Panel. That is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 on the Johnsonville Stage.

Discussing the participation of the Nissan Micra Cup series atMotorama, the show's Greg MacPherson said, "We are very pleased that our guests will have an opportunity to speak with representatives of the series and see actual Nissan Micra Cup cars atMotorama. In just one season, the series made a huge impression with racers across Canada and I know that a lot of Ontario road racers will be interested in learning more about the Nissan Micra Cup."

 

ABOUT THE NISSAN MICRA CUP: Created in 2015 as an affordable, entry-level racing division, the Nissan Micra Cup found immediate success in Quebec and will expand into Ontario this year. Races are a half-hour in duration with the season consisting of eight doubleheader race weekends.
