NATIONAL STOCK CAR RACING CHIEF APPELLATE OFFICER STATEMENT

On March 20, 2012, the Chief Appellate Officer heard and considered the appeal of the penalties resulting from the #48 Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team.  This stemmed from an opening day inspection for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Daytona International Speedway on February 17, 2012.


The penalties concern Section 12-1 of the NASCAR Rule Book “Actions detrimental to stock car racing;” Section 12-4(J): “Any determination by NASCAR Officials that the Race Equipment used in the Event does not conform to NASCAR rules detailed in Section 20 of the NASCAR Rule Book, or has not been approved by NASCAR prior to the Event;” and Section 20-2.1(E): “If in the judgment of NASCAR Officials, any part or component of the car not previously approved by NASCAR that has been installed or modified to enhance aerodynamic performance, will not be permitted: Unapproved car body modifications.”

The results of the appeal hearing were as follows:

-          Rescinding the loss of 25 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Car Owner points (for Jeff Gordon).

-          Rescinding the loss of 25 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Driver points (for Jimmie Johnson).

-          Rescinding the six (6) NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Events suspension for the Crew Chief (Chad Knaus) and Car Chief (Ron Malec), however both will remain on NASCAR probation until May 9, 2012.

-          $100,000 fine remains in place for the Crew Chief (Chad Knaus).

L’Enduro des Champions Pole-Position :
Une 4ème édition qui s'annonce palpitante !

Montréal (Québec), le 19 mars 2012.- L’édition 2012 de l’Enduro des Champions Pole-Position a lieu ce samedi (24 mars), au complexe Kart-O-Mania de Montréal. Cette épreuve d’endurance karting d’une durée de 6 heures regroupe les meilleurs équipes classées à l’issue des traditionnelles 4 Heures Pole-Position (version "nocturne" et "classique") ayant eu lieu le mois dernier.

Cette épreuve s'annonce comme très disputée avec un éventail de pilotes provenant de disciplines aussi variées que le circuit routier, le karting, le stock-car, le rallye et le solo. Bien que cet événement ait vocation de regrouper les pilotes professionnels, semi pro et amateurs avant le début de la saison printanière, le niveau sportif apparaît plus que relevé !

C’est donc ce samedi, à 17 heures précises, sous forme d’un spectaculaire départ de type "Le Mans Classic" (pilotes qui traversent en courant la piste pour sauter dans leurs machines et débuter ainsi la course), que cet Enduro des Champions Pole-Position sera lancé. 60 pilotes (équipages de 5 pilotes) ont été autorisés à participer, répartis dans 12 équipes.

L’entrée au site de Kart-O-Mania, situé au 5196 de la Savane (coin Décarie) à Montréal, est gratuite pour tous les spectateurs. L'Enduro des Champions Pole-Position est présenté par Pole-Position Magazine, Kart-O-Mania, le NAPA 200 et A.S.Q.

South Boston Speedway next stop for PASS South

Charlotte, NC 3/20/12- It's not too often that fans will get to see the “Bad Boys with the Bad Fast Toys” PASS South Series in action during a Saturday afternoon matinee, but this Saturday fans in and around South Boston, Virginia will as a 2 PM start is slated to get the action underway. Fans will get to enjoy double file restarts, all green flag racing, and 600 plus horsepower under pristine spring weather that much of the south is currently experiencing all before nightfall.


“I think fans will really enjoy this weekend’s race with the early start and beautiful weather throughout the region right now. Everyone will be able to get out to the track early and do some lunch time tailgating if they want and then watch some of the best super late model drivers in the country at one of the nicest tracks we go to as a series and still be home that night to do something else if they want,” stated Pro All Stars Series President Tom Mayberry.

Race fans won’t be the only ones looking forward to the early start. PASS South competitors such as Tim Pinion, driver of the #42 Commonwealth Building Materials Dodge whose home track happens to be the South Boston Speedway, is equally excited about the 150 laps under the blue skies of southern Virginia.

“I think racing during the day will be a great experience for the fans at South Boston because sometimes in March the nights can still be quite cool. Obviously it presents a few different challenges for the teams because we are use to racing at night, but that’s just part of racing,” added Pinion.

While racing during daylight hours in the series second race of the young season may be the topic of discussion for some drivers, others will be hoping to bounce back from disappointing results at the Dillon Motor Speedway two weeks ago. Coulter Motorsports teammates Craig Goess and Gray Gaulding are both looking for redemption at South Boston after getting involved in a lap four crash two weeks ago. Ross Kenseth, son of 2012 Dayton 500 winner Matt Kenseth, is also looking forward to hitting the 4/10th mile track after finishing outside the top ten at Dillon.

With both South Boston winners from a year ago not expected to be in attendance, the door is wide open for a new winner. Veteran racers Jay Fogleman and Preston Peltier, neither of which had stellar results a season ago at the track, will be looking to change their personal history a bit. Brandon Ward, Bradley McCaskill, David Quakenbush, and David Latour, who will be making his super late model debut at the track after having competed in the late model stock car division there in recent years, all have filed entries for this Saturday’s race.

SÉRIE SPORTSMAN QUÉBEC: UN CHAMPION S'AJOUTE AU GROUPE

Québec, QC (19 mars 2012) – Le vétéran de Ville Saguenay, champion 2003 du titre provincial et de l’Autodrome Chicoutimi en catégorie LMS, Michaël Lavoie, a choisi de faire un retour derrière le volant et de se battre pour le championnat de la Série Sportsman Québec en 2012.

 

Lavoie qui a une imposante feuille de route malgré ses jeunes 27 printemps, a parcouru et vaincu sur les pistes du Québec, de l’Ontario et même du nord-est des États-Unis.  Au volant de voitures de type LMS dans l’ACT et à White Mountain, de pro-stock (Super Late Model) dans la Série américaine PASS North ou au Québec dans les PROCAM/Super Truck et les CASCAR régional (Autodrome St-Eustache) il a fait sa marque. 

Il a même travaillé de près avec le réputé constructeur du New Hampshire, Dale Shaw, des ateliers Dale Shaw Race Cars afin de perfectionner ses connaissances.  À l’été 2010, il a démarré son entreprise de construction et de préparation de voiture de stock-car. C’est d’ailleurs aidé de l’entreprise et du savoir-faire de Michaël que David Gagnon a su profiter pour remporter le titre de recrue de l’année 2011.

Au volant d’une toute nouvelle Ford Fusion No. 10, construite dans les ateliers Lavoie Racing que Michaël s’élancera à la quête d’un titre de la Série Sportsman Québec.  « Nous allons faire toutes les courses en 2012.  Je veux être au plus fort de la lutte au championnat, mais je suis conscient que le calibre dans la Série est très élevé et la qualité des pilotes est meilleure d’année en année » déclara Lavoie.

Selon M. André Poulin, président de la Série Sportsman Québec, la venue de Michaël Lavoie dans les rangs de la Série va rehausser d’un cran la compétition.  « Malgré une participation sporadique au cours des deux dernières saisons, Michaël était toujours de la lutte pour la victoire lorsqu’il s’installait derrière le volant.  Il sera certainement un pilote à surveiller, il est très spectaculaire et combatif.  Je n’ai aucun doute qu’il sera dans la course au championnat à la fin de l’année. »

La levée de rideau pour la série se fera avec une journée d’essai et d’inspection à l’autodrome Montmagny le 12 mai et la première compétition, une manche de 75 tours, qui aura lieu le 19 mai à l’Autodrome St-Eustache dans le cadre du festival sportsman qui mettra aussi en vedette les Sportsmans ANCA et la classe Sportsman de la piste américaine Airborne Speedway.

12 Hours of Sebring: A 2nd place for Louis-Philippe Dumoulin and the Alex Job Racing - WeatherTech racing team

Trois-Rivieres, Sunday March 18th, 2012 – Louis-Philippe Dumoulin was the only Canadian on the podium yesterday at the end of the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring’s endurance race. Dumoulin and his Alex Job Racing - WeatherTech teammates placed 2nd in their category, despite spending 8 minutes more than the winning team in the pits.

 

Après avoir qualifié la Porsche WeatherTech n°022 GT3 Cup en troisième position vendredi dernier, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin (Québec, CAN.), Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, IL, USA) et Leh Keen (Charleston, SC, USA) ont pris le départ confiants du potentiel de l’équipe et celui de la voiture. D’autant plus qu’avec 42 victoires (dont sept aux 12h de Sebring), Alex Job Racing est une des équipes les plus performantes dans l’histoire de la série American Le Mans dans leur catégorie.

Les coéquipiers ont eu droit à leur part d’avaries. Alors que Leh Keen est au volant, au 45e tour, la Porsche WeatherTech n°022 subit une crevaison, les forçant à faire un arrêt aux puits. C’est au tour de Cooper MacNeil de prendre le relais et au 87e tour, MacNeil entre en collision avec une voiture de la catégorie P2 endommageant entre autres le côté gauche et l'arrière de la voiture. Lorsque Louis-Philippe Dumoulin prend le volant, la porte ne s’ouvre plus et il sont obligés de nouveau un arrêt aux puits pour la maintenir en place.

« C’était vraiment intéressant, gérer le trafic en général, tellement de paramètres en jeu. Quand j’ai pris le volant, la porte ne restait pas fermée et j’ai dû rentrer aux puits en conduisant à une main en tenant la porte. En plus, mon cool suit ne fonctionnait plus rendant la conduite un peu inconfortable », mentionne Louis-Philippe Dumoulin.

À ce moment de la course, l’équipe accuse trois tours de retard sur le meneur et c’est grâce à la combinaison de l’efficacité de l’équipe mécanique, de tours rapides, de la stratégie technique utilisée et de la gestion du trafic que Louis-Philippe Dumoulin (Québec, CAN.), Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, IL, USA) et Leh Keen (Charleston, SC, USA) franchissent la ligne d’arrivée en 2e position.

Louis-Philippe Dumoulin - recrue de l’année 2011 en série NASCAR Canadian Tire - est fier de sa première expérience aux 12h de Sebring et surtout de la performance de l’équipe et de ses coéquipiers.

After having qualified the Porsche WeatherTech n°022 GT3 Cup in third position last Friday, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin (Quebec, CAN.), Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, IL, USA) and Leh Keen (Charleston, SC, USA) left the starting grid with full confidence in their car, and in their teams’ potential for victory. With 42 victories (7 at the 12 Hours of Sebring), Alex Job Racing is one of the most recognised team in the American Le Mans Series for their performances in their category.

The three drivers all suffered their share of incidents during the race. On lap 45, Leh Keen suffered a flat tire with the WeatherTech n°022 Porsche and had to make an unplanned pitstop. On lap 87, Cooper MacNeil collided with another car of the P2 category, damaging the rear, most specifically the left hand side, of the car. Finally, while Louis-Philippe Dumoulin was at the wheel of the car, the door would not shut properly requiring an additional pitstop to fix it.

“It was very interesting to manage the variety of parameters, amongst which driving in traffic and during the night. When I took the wheel the door would not stay shut, I had to return to the pits. In addition my cooling suit was malfunctioning, making the drive slightly uncomfortable,” mentioned Louis-Philippe Dumoulin.

At this time in the race, the team was 3-laps down from the leaders, but thanks to the combination of the mechanical team’s efficiency, fast lap times, team strategy, and traffic management, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin (Quebec, CAN.), Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, IL, USA) and Leh Keen (Charleston, SC, USA) crossed the finish line in 2nd place.

Louis-Philippe Dumoulin – 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Rookie of the Year – is proud of his first experience at the 12 Hours of Sebring, but more so of the team and teammates performance.

“The n°022 WeatherTech car is a performing car, the whole team did an excellent job and I really loved collaborating with Cooper MacNeil and Leh Keen, two experienced drivers. The mechanical team knew how to react quickly and was very efficient,” shared Louis-Philippe Dumoulin.

Mission accomplie pour Ray Junior Courtemanche à Bristol

Montréal, le 17 mars 2012.- Le pilote de la série NASCAR Canadian Tire a couru ce week-end à Bristol (TN) sur l’ovale à haute vitesse d’un demi-mile, dans le cadre de la série NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. Il a terminé l’épreuve de 125 tours en 31e position, après avoir connu des problèmes mécaniques. Parti avec les objectifs de se remettre en forme et d’apprendre une nouvelle piste et une nouvelle voiture parmi des pilotes aguerris, Ray Jr a su tirer son épingle du jeu. « Je voulais apprendre et je vous assure que j’ai presque doublé mon niveau d’expérience d’un seul coup. »

 

Ray Junior a d’abord attaqué la piste lors de la première session d’essais, le vendredi, après avoir roulé sur la même piste lors d’essais en fin février. L’équipe menée par Mario Gosselin a travaillé fort pour s’assurer que les réglages de la voiture suivaient le développement de Ray Junior à mesure qu’il se sentait de plus en plus à l’aise sur la piste. « Je me retrouve dans une situation totalement différente de ce que j’ai vécu dans le passé. La piste est plus rapide, le bol des virages beaucoup plus élevé, la voiture est plus puissante, et avec des pilotes de premier rang que je dois laisser passer, ce qui me fait dévier du tracé idéal. De plus, à mesure que je fais des chronos plus rapides, l’effort physique augmente. Après avoir complété 73 tours de piste (plus que tous les autres pilotes) J’ai peiné à sortir de la voiture, et ce après m’être entraîné fort 5 jours par semaine depuis deux mois. »

 

La pression montait, car Ray Junior devait baisser ses temps de 0,3 secs lors de la qualif pour s’assurer de prendre le départ. « Je sais où trouver le temps, il ne me reste qu’à me concentrer et livrer la marchandise – je suis ici pour ça ! »

 

Lors de la qualification du samedi après-midi, la température ambiante avait chuté, ce qui a affecté le comportement de la voiture. « J’ai tout essayé lors de mes deux tours de qualifications, sans obtenir le résultat que j’espérais; mais j’ai beaucoup appris encore une fois. Nous partons dernier, mais nous sommes dans la course, et mon but demeure de terminer la course. Je me sens dans un autre monde… et je m’amuse comme un fou ! »

 

Parti de la dernière rangée pour la course de 125 tours, Ray Junior espérait suivre le peloton devant lui et éviter les multiples accrochages engendrés par la piste à la fois rapide et serrée comme Bristol. « Je suivais bien au départ, mais la voiture s’est mise à survirer après 25 tours. Nous avons finalement réglé le problème après quatre arrêts qui m’ont fait perdre plusieurs tours sur les meneurs. » Après l’arrêt obligatoire pour changer les pneus au 70e tour, Ray Junior suivait le rythme et remontait le peloton, mais les problèmes sont revenus. « J’ai fini la course avec des problèmes d’essence qui faisaient tousser le moteur. Les arrêts et problèmes m’ont couté cher, avec une 31e place, 34 tours derrière le gagnant. Mais nous avons roulé et terminé la course sans incident, et je serai d’autant plus prêt pour ma prochaine sortie en K&N, sur le "Monster Mile" de Dover (DE), le 26 avril prochain.»

ACT CHEVY vs. FORD HEATS UP IN 2012

        Waterbury, VT – Three years ago the American Canadian Tour (ACT) introduced a Ford crate engine option to their racing program. The goal was to give the Late Model teams some variety, and hopefully make the racing more exciting for the fans, many of whom are die hard Ford fans.

 

Many of the top teams in ACT elected to switch from the Chevrolet crate program, which had been the mainstay of ACT racing since it was developed in 1999. After a couple of years of ‘tweaking’ the rules, officials are hoping that the two major manufacturers’ engine programs have reached the ultimate goal of parity for which ACT racing is known. The goal of Late Model racing has always been to make it a ‘driver’s series’, not a cubic dollar series.

 

“When I was asked to test the original version of the Ford crate motor, I knew it would take some time to get things sorted out. There was no perfect science without actually competing with the engines in actual race conditions,” said Chris Michaud, the three-time Thunder Road Champion and original team elected to do the Ford testing.

 

“The most difficult part of getting the two engines in compliance has been the different needs for different sized tracks. Engine set back requirements for the Ford, different torque levels, particularly high end torque, have been a challenge. With the help of Butler & MacMaster Engines, and a lot of co-operation from teams, we think we have reached that goal for 2012. There are some adjustments we have made over the past couple seasons, and along with the rule changes we have made going into 2012, that should help make both engine more compatible. Now it is up to the drivers and team set ups, as it should be”, said Dean Gallison, the Director of Competition for ACT.

ACT AND LEE USA HAVE LONG HISTORY

       

2012 Opening Day New Hampshire Governor’s Cup up next

        Waterbury, VT – In 1986 Beaver Dragon from Milton, VT won the opening event at the newly restored Lee USA New Hampshire speed plant.

“Red” and Judy MacDonald had just purchased the facility and called on the newly created American Canadian Tour (ACT) to open the track in the Spring of 1986. Later that season, the seven-time ACT Champion Robbie Crouch from Tampa, FL would win the first New Hampshire Governor’s Cup. Crouch backed that win up with a consecutive Governor’s Cup win in 1988.

Another ACT Champion, Russ Urlin, from London, Ontario won back-to-back at Lee in 1989 and 1990. Other notable winners at Lee during the ACT Pro Stock era were: Paul Richardson, Dave Dion, Kevin Lepage, and Ralph Nason.

When the present American Canadian Tour, featuring the Late Model teams throughout the Northeast took over the New Hampshire Governor’s Cup in 2003, Patrick Laperle from St Denis, Quebec won the Late Model renewal of the event. A surprise Canadian driver from Ontario, former CASCAR and present NASCAR Canadian Tire champion, DJ Kennington won the 2004 version in his only race ever contested on the ACT. Thunder Road three time champion Chris Michaud won in 2005. A string of five more different drivers have won the New Hampshire Governors Cup 150 over the past five seasons including: Ben Rowe, Turner ME, Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. (Pole), Hudson, NH; two more New Hampshire natives, Brad Leighton, and when a Lee weekly racer surprised a huge crowd Miles Chipman won in 2009 and 2010 respectively. The defending champion is the all-time winningest driver of ACT events and tour championships, Brian Hoar of Williston, VT who finally won in 2011.

The 2012 edition of the New Hampshire Governor’s Cup has a very good chance to continue the first-time winner streak since 2003. Wayne Helliwell, Jr., runner-up to Hoar in 2011 is a multi-time track champion at Lee USA. In his first full season of competing on the ACT US he finished an impressive second for the season-long point championship. Most observers would tag Helliwell as the favorite to continue the ‘new winner streak’ at Lee in 2012. Helliwell led 89 laps of the event in 2011 and is coming off both another Lee track championship, and his outstanding 2011 season with ACT. Austin Theriault, the sensational teenaged racer from Fort Kent, ME has raced down South during the off-season for Brad Keslowski Racing as a development driver. Strong top ten finishes, and a very successful second half on the American Canadian Tour in 2011, also make Theriault a good candidate to continue the first-time winner streak at the New Hampshire Governor’s Cup in 2012. ACT veteran Randy Potter of Groveton, NH, and Quinny Welch, multi-time White Mountain Motorsport Park champion hope to bring the Cup back to New Hampshire in 2012. Along with Hoar, veteran Brent Dragon has never missed a Late Model start and will attempt to be the first-time winner, while returning the Cup to Vermont. Two Maine top contenders Ricky Rolfe and Glen Luce have also entered the season opener and will look for their first Lee USA wins.

The traditional ACT opening event expects over forty (40) teams to attempt to qualify for the New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 which will take place on Sunday, April 15, 2012. A voluntary practice day is scheduled for all teams on Saturday, April 14, 2012 to give teams a chance to shake out new cars, new rules, and prepare for what is usually one of the most competitive and exciting races of the season.

Bartemys prep for Airborne and DIRTcar 358-Modified Asphalt Series

SOUTH PLATTSBURGH, NY – Herb Bartemy and sons Aaron, 25, and Adam, 23 of Bartemy Motorsports had some bad breaks – literally – in 2011.

                In the midst of trying to run a weekly DIRTcar 358-Modified schedule on the asphalt at Airborne Speedway, Herb tore up his left shoulder at work and underwent rotator cuff surgery. A few weeks later, while mounting a truck tire at their TDI Truck Repair and Towing facility in Swanton, VT, Adam broke his left forearm.

 

                The trio has six good arms back at work on the task of getting two new cars ready for the upcoming Airborne season, which opens Sunday, April 29. The Bartemys also plan to compete in the new DIRT-sanctioned four race asphalt series put together with Dunn Tire Raceway Park in Lancaster, NY.

                Adam and Aaron finished 1st and 4th in a DIRTcar Modified event at Dunn Tire Raceway Park in 2011.

                “We have built two new chassis on our own with last year’s machinery on hand as back-up cars,” Aaron Bartemy said. “The biggest difference this year I think will come from our being completely moved in and organized at our new shop – Bartemy’s Speed Shop in Swanton.

                “We got off to a slow start last year,” Aaron said, “and then my father and Aaron got hurt.  These days the Modified field at Airborne is full of talented guys. It makes it neat to race there, but you’ve got to be on your game.” Aaron won two races and finished 3rd in points in 2009, but hasn’t cracked the top ten in points since.

                “The track seems to change more week to week than it did right after getting repaved,” Herb Bartemy said. “Aaron likes a tight car and he never got comfortable until 3/4 of the way through last season. The shock package wasn’t working and we were chasing the car a lot.”

                “Adam likes a car that’s looser,” Bartemy continued. “He designed his car and he just needs more seat time to hit his stride. Having a broken arm didn’t help that any last year.”

                “We liked Lancaster, it’s a real clean track, a good place to race,” Aaron said. “We donated some of our winnings to the Buffalo Children’s Hospital after that race. We’re looking to be going back to what we’ve done in the past and donate some winnings to Vermont Children’s Hospital this season.”

                Team members for the B3 (Aaron) and X (Adam) cars include Donnie Regimbal, Danny Pion, Joey Roberts, Aaron’s wife Meeghan and his sister Ellen. Sponsors include PTP Transmission, Castle Chemicals and TDI Truck Repair & Towing.

                The four-race DIRTcar 358-Modified Series opens at Airborne Wednesday, June 20 and then moves to Dunn Tire Raceway Park on Tuesday, June 26 and Tuesday, August 21.

Discount Season Passes Available at Devil's Bowl Speedway

Vermont track offers year-long savings on general admission and pit area

WEST HAVEN, VT -- Discount season passes are now available just in time for the 46th season of stock car racing at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, VT.  The track is offering three types of year-long passes for spectators and competitors.

A General Admission season pass is available for all 18 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events.  The General Admission pass will be honored throughout the year, beginning with the prestigious “Spring Green 112” for the American-Canadian Tour Late Models and the season-opening championship event for Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s Bond Auto Parts Modified, Renegade, and Bomber divisions on Sunday, May 6.
Special events include the People’s United Bank Memorial Day Modified Special on Friday, May 25, the Vermont State Late Model Championship Series 100 on Friday, June 8, and the Firecracker Twin 44s on Wednesday, July 4.  Also included are the Mid-Season Championships on Friday, July 13, Championship Night on Friday, August 31, and the Vermont 200 Weekend on Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16.
The General Admission season pass is just $185, a savings of nearly 12% from the race-day ticket gate price.  A Senior General Admission season pass is available for only $145 for race fans age 62 and up.  As an added benefit, General Admission season pass holders will get a 15-minute head start in selecting their grandstand seats at every event.
New for 2012 is the Garage Area season pass, a program designed to help save racers money in the long-term.  The Garage Area pass is available for a one-time fee of only $450 to NASCAR-licensed drivers, car owners, and crew members.  Garage Area pass holders will enjoy a 20% discount for a year-long savings of $111, versus the total weekly price for non-licensed participants.
“We encourage all of our fans and competitors to take a look at the season pass programs we have in place,” said Devil’s Bowl Speedway owner/promoter Mike Bruno.  “Times are tough, and we want our supporters to be able to enjoy their racing at an affordable price.  The season passes are a nice alternative and really do save a substantial amount of money in the long run.”
