STECKLY LEADS ALL 300 LAPS ON ROUTE TO EDMONTON VICTORY

 

 

Sunday July 12, 2015, Edmonton, AB:  The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 has been on a streak of firsts over the last three events and Saturday night in Westaskawin was no exception. Steckly led all 300 laps on the way to his first win of 2015 and while two other drivers have led entire races over the series history no one has done it on an oval track until now.


Steckly was happy with his Canadian Tire entry right off the hauler. "The car is real close to where I need it to be," said Steckly.  "We just need a few tweaks for qualifying and we should be good."

 

The changes continued to keep him out front as Steckly posted the quickest time of the qualifying session to give him his 14th career pole.

 

Steckly was able to stay up front and build a solid lead during the first half of the 300 lap event. A competition caution followed at lap 150 and after coming to the attention of his crew for tires and fuel, Steckly again lined up at the front of the 20 car field.  Several caution periods over the final 150 laps had Steckly proving how strong his 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge was as he continuously had to beat his challengers on those starts, including a five lap dash to the finish.  "I can't say enough about my team," said Steckly after the race.  "They are the best in this series and they work tirelessly to give me these great cars ever week so this win is a salute to them.  I also have a great group of sponsors who have mostly been with us for several years.  We were close to the win at CTMP in May and Chaudiere in June so it feels good to finally seal the deal here in Wetaskawin."

 

The Alberta Has Energy 300 will air on TSN on Saturday, July 18 at 2:30 p.m. ET, and on RDS2 on Friday, July 31 at 8 p.m.

 

Next up for Steckly and his Canadian Tire Dodge team will be at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway on Wednesday July 15th.

Toonie Admission Night Turns on the FANS at Peterborough Speedway

It can be difficult to find a great night of entertainment for just $2.00, but 3 times each season Peterborough Speedway hosts a Toonie Spectator Grandstand Admission/Fan Appreciation Night. Saturday, July 11th a near capacity crowd saw an outstanding night of action with the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car, Mini Stock, Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model and Ontario Modifieds Racing Series divisions.

 




Feature race action got underway with Ray Schroer and Brandon Feeney pacing the field of 21 starters to the Great Canadian RV green flag for the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun 20 lapper. At the drop of the green flag, Terry Hubbard took the over the second spot early and by the time there were 12 laps complete, the leaders had caught the tail-end of the field. Sean Kennedy grabbed top spot a lap later and managed to hold-off a late race charge by Ryan Oosterholt to take his first win of the year. Schroer, Matthew Vanderbelt and Jeremy Kelly completed the top 5.

 

Bailey Jacobs and Steve Mayhew brought the pack of Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car pack to the stripe for their headline dance. Jacobs and Mayhew fought for the lead during the race's early stages, while Howie Crowe looked for an advantage on the outside line. Daryl Fice – making his first start of the year – got the better of the front-runners before 10 laps showed on the scoreboard, but had defending track champion Anthony DiBello on his back bumper. As the pair worked around Eric Crowe, there was contact between the 3 cars that resulted in a red flag. With a 3 lap shootout to settle the score, Dan Archibald took the win. Howie Crowe, Mayhew, Dale Wood, in his first start of the season and Jacobs chased the #07 across the stripe.

 

With 20 laps on the table and a trip to Dart Heating and Air Conditioning victory lane waiting for the winner, Miles Tyson and Charlie Smith started on the front row for the Mini Stock feature tilt. Tyson had the dominant car early, but Tyler Junkin had moved into the runner-up spot with just a handful of laps complete. The lead duo ran up on a large pack of back markers with a dozen down and when Donovan Price hit the outside front stretch wall to create a green-white-checkered finish, Junkin grabbed the win. Brandon Hannah, Kyle Baker and Kevin Strutt finished-out the fast 5.

 

Travis Hallyburton and Paul Maltese had a pack of 14 hungry teams on their tail as the Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Models rolled from the staging area for what would be an action-packed feature event. The yellow flag flew early when Jeff Toms cut a right front tire. Fellow invader Rick Walt took the top spot from Hallyburton with 5 laps complete and held the advantage until issues with a right-rear tire sent him pit-side late in the going. Hallyburton held back a charge from Dave Morgan for the win, with Tyler Betts, Mike Wallace and Amanda Connolly the top 5.

 

The final feature event of the night was a 25 lapper for the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, with Corey Horner and Ryan Babin in control of the field. While Alex Lees and Babin were the class of the field early in the run, things tightened-up when Donny Beatty and Ryan Dick combined to bring out the first yellow flag on the 7th lap. Just a couple of circuits later, the first turn turned into a parking lot after Babin hit the retaining wall. Josh Gruntz needed to take evasive action down an escape route and the race was red flagged to check on the driver. Back under green, all eyes were on John Baker Jr. The crowd favourite made it 2 wins in a row, with a victory over Brad Stevenson, Lees, Beatty and Rob Warnes.

 

Qualifying heat wins earlier in the night went to Ryan Oosterholt with a pair, Sean Kennedy and Jordan Desroches in the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun. Dan Archibald with a pair, Luke Gignac and Howie Crowe in the Paul Davis Systems Thunder Cars. Kevin Strutt, Donovan Price with a pair and Miles Tyson in the Mini Stocks. Dave Morgan, Amanda Connolly, Travis Hallyburton and Bryan Sudsbury in the Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Models. Donny Beatty, Corey Horner, John Baker Jr. and Brad Stevenson for the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series.

 

Bullring bullet points: The 50/50 draw paid $1266.00 to Patricia Barberstock of Belleville, Ontario…A number of Late Model teams including Travis and Thane Hallyburton, Rick Walt and Randy Bull made their first Peterborough Speedway starts of the season…Quick thinking by Art Rodgers during the Thunder Car red flag brought a fire under the hood of Tom Podd's machine to the attention of track safety workers.

 

Next action at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval is Saturday, July 18th when the APC Pro Late Model Series checks-in for a 100 lapper. Also on the show will be the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car and OSCAAR Midget divisions. Pit gates open at 2:00, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 4:00 and the first green flag at 6:00.

Bryant and Bushey take first wins; LaVair makes it five straight

WEST HAVEN, VT – Vince Quenneville Jr. is loving his new racecar, and he parked it in victory lane at Devil's Bowl Speedway for the second week in a row on Friday, July 10.  The Brandon, VT veteran won the double-points Rutland Herald Mid-Season Championship event, making it a perfect two-for-two in his new Troyer chassis.  Other winners on the night included Robert Bryant Jr., Jimmy Bushey, and Chris LaVair.

Quenneville started last on the field because of his victory in the previous event, but that didn't slow him down any.  A steady climb through traffic brought him to the back bumper of leader Jimmy Ryan by lap 15 of the 35-lap race; he made several attempts at getting by Ryan before finally finding grip in the outside lane and nosing ahead at lap 22.  After that, Quenneville was long gone and cruised to his second-straight victory in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series presented by Yandow Sales & Service and John Deere.

Ryan was in a fierce fight with Greg Atkins, point leader Ron Proctor, and Joey Roberts during the rest of the race, and Proctor eventually made his way into the runner-up spot.  Atkins finished third for his seventh consecutive top-five finish, followed by Roberts and Ryan.  Proctor, of Charlton, NY, holds a 14-point lead in the championship standings over Quenneville (455-441) entering the second half of the season.

Robert Bryant Jr. of Brooklyn, CT worked hard for his first win of the season in the 30-lap Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Model feature.  Side-by-side action was the theme of the race, and Bryant ran in close quarters with Steve Miller for several laps near the halfway point before taking over at lap 18.  Bryant led a group of seven cars in the lead pack that took turns swapping positions throughout the final laps, and Bristol, VT's Josh Masterson ended up in the runner-up position.  Jamie Aube came from 14th starting spot to finish third, followed by Miller and Bobby Therrien.

Masterson's good finish in the double-points race, combined with a hard crash on the opening lap for chief rival Todd Stone, gives him a sizeable lead in the championship standings.  Bryant moved up to second place with his win, but trails Masterson by 44 points (365-321).  Stone entered the event just five points off Masterson's lead but dropped to third place, 61 points behind.

Jimmy Bushey captured a popular and emotional victory in the 20-lap Brileya's Chrysler-Jeep Renegade feature.  Bushey lost his Mooers Forks, NY home in a devastating fire on June 13 while he was competing at Airborne Park Speedway and had been out of action for three weeks, but rebounded with a dominant win in the Mid-Season Championship race – his first win at Devil's Bowl.

Rookie Matt Monaghan finished second for the best result of his young career in the class, followed by Robert Gordon, Jim McKiernan, and Scott FitzGerald.  Gordon, of Milton, VT, holds a 30-point advantage on FitzGerald (409-379) in the title chase.

Chris LaVair of Gabriels, NY made it five consecutive wins in the Portland Glass Mini Stocks, sweeping both halves of a two-segment race.  LaVair extended his lead in the division's all-time win list to 14, and also equaled the Devil's Bowl Speedway modern-era asphalt record of five consecutive wins, a mark set in 2010 by Renegade racer Jon Miller.  Chuck Bradford finished second in the event, followed by Harold LaVair, the winner's father.  Kyle Watrous ran fourth in his first start of the season, with rookie Tanner Crary fifth.  Chris LaVair has a comfortable 64-point lead in the standings over his father Harold LaVair (408-344).

The Rutland Area Vehicle Enthusiasts (RAVE) car club was also on hand for the event; Brad and Laurie Canty's 1969 Chevrolet Nova was voted by fans as the "best in show" while Damon and Tina Pelkey's 1947 Ford pickup truck won the burnout contest with an impressive smoke show.

Devil's Bowl Speedway hosts the family-fun "Monster Truck Mania" event on Tuesday, July 14 at 6:30 p.m., with four high-flying, car-crushing machines including Monster Jam World Freestyle Champion "Overkill Evolution" and the "Higher Education" monster school bus.  Four "Motor Madness" races will also be on the card, open to all drivers and all vehicles.  General admission is $15 for adults and only $5 for kids age 12 and under. Nos classes locales à l'honneur


C'est ce vendredi 10 juillet que ce tenait le programme « Spécial Classes Locales » à l'Autodrome Vallée-Jonction.

Pour l'occasion, nous avons pu compter sur un car count plus qu'intéressant alors que les 3 classes locales venaient disputer chacun deux finales.

On comptait 20 voitures Sport Compact Amateur, 27 Sport Compact Élite et 8 Limité.





William Grondin accède à son 1er podium

Dans la classe Sport Compact Amateur Oricom Internet, le jeune pilote de la voiture #700, William Grondin de Vallée-Jonction commandité par Garage Mario Groleau a réalisé une soirée exceptionnelle en terminant en 3e position à la première course et en 2e position à la 2e finale ce qui lui a valu un premier podium avec sa 3e position au combiné. Le #76 Marc-Antoine Carrier de St-Fabien de Panet commandité par Guillaume Bélanger a non seulement terminé 1er lors de la 1ere finale, mais il termine aussi au 1er rang dans le combiné des deux courses. Fort possiblement un résultat qui pourrait lui permettre d'accéder à la 3e position au classement général. Le #116 Kharl Landry de Ste-Marie, commandité par Hortibeauce Botanix Inc, complète le podium.

 

Kevin Bisson réalise une belle performance en Limité

Le #27 Kevin Bisson de Beauceville commandité par Garage 10/10 a connu une belle soirée en étant vainqueur de la première finale et 3e lors de la 2e finale ce qui lui a valu la victoire au combiné. Le #47 Yves Marcoux de Thetford Mines commandité par Grenier G.R. accède à la 2e position du podium Automobiles Wendake et la 3e place du combiné revient au  #116 Francis Grégoire de Saint-Isidore  commandité par Fondation P.G.

 

Bisson a le dessus sur Godbout

Deux finales distinctes avaient lieu ce soir pour la classe Sport Compact Élite Oricom Internet. Nous avons premièrement eu droit à la première manche de la Triple Couronne et c'est le #75 Steve Godbout qui remporte cette première étape suivie de près par le #26 Martin Bisson. Le #13 Robin Harrisson de Terrebonne complète le podium après que sa voiture soit entrée en collision dans les barils d'eau au bord de la piste en tentant d'éviter deux voitures en perte de contrôle. Un premier podium pour lui sur l'ovale de Vallée-Jonction pour le pilote commandité par Pneu 337.

Pour ce qui est de la finale #2, nous avons eu droit à une chaude lutte entre le pilote qui occupe actuellement le 1er rang au classement général, le #75 Steve Godbout et le pilote de la voiture #26 Martin Bisson. Tentant par tous les moyens de dépasser Bisson qui était soudé à la piste, Godbout termine en 2e position. Le #3 Sylvain Darveau de Ste-Marie qui était partie en 11e position a su prendre toutes les opportunités de dépassements qui se sont offertes à lui ce qui lui accorde la 3e position de ce programme. On a donc pu voir le #26 Martin Bisson remporter la victoire de cette finale devant les spectateurs visiblement heureux de le retrouver sur la première marche du podium.

 

Les résultats complets pour ce programme devront se faire attendre quelque peu suite aux inspections techniques des 5 premiers qui ont eu lieu à la fin du programme.

Nos 3 classes locales prennent une pause jusqu'au 15 août où ils seront présents lors de la journée de la famille. Ne manquez pas la suite de notre programme double demain, le samedi 11 juillet alors que la série ACT-LMS effectuera un 150 tour. Ce programme commandité par Best-Buy pièces d'Autos accueillera aussi l'association Vintage et les voitures STR /Slingshot sans oublier les 3 fois 50 tours en positions inversées de la Série Sportsman Qc Lucas Oil lors du Langis Caron 150.

-          Autodrome Granby. Dans cette soirée de la série Sportsman Seaway Lussier et des Lightning Sprint, Éric Sundborg est allé chercher sa troisième victoire à l'Autodrome Granby dans le cadre de la visite annuelle de sa série. Le sportsman Martin Pelletier a mis la main quant à lui sur sa troisième victoire consécutive chez nous. Enfin chez les prostocks, François Adam se réjouit d'ajouter un troisième autocollant de victoire sur sa voiture.

 

20  x Lightning Sprint 

 

Éric Sundborg #16 parti premier, dominera complètement la course. Il aura comme assistant le 31 d'Yves Girard jusqu'au 11ème tour. Puis, le 51 de Guillaume Neiderer prendra la deuxième place pour le reste de l'épreuve. Il faut dire que Neiderer parti 6ème attendait en 3ème place depuis le 3ème tour. Jordan Poirier #28 parti 7ème dépasse une première fois au 3ème tour. Au 6ème tour par l'extérieur, il fait le 29 de Stéphane  St-Laurent pour devenir 5ème. Poirier dépasse ensuite le 18 de Guy Blain. Enfin, à 5 tours de la fin, le jeune Jordan passe le 31 de Girard pour marquer un podium. Sundborg #16 et Neiderer #51 avait fini dans le même ordre l'an dernier. Or Alex Therrien #21 qui avait fini troisième en 2014, n'a pas pris part à la finale ce soir. Therrien était 3ème en qualification lorsqu'il quitte pour un bris. Dommage pour lui qui était 1er au championnat avant ce soir. Il devra utiliser un de ses deux jokers qui permet de raturer un résultat dans la série.

Une recrue de 2014 Félix Murray #95 qui remportait sa première qualification le 26 juin dernier chez nous, a mené les 9 premiers tours de l'épreuve. Il terminera 5ème soit son meilleur résultat en saison régulière. C'est au 10ème tour que le 92P de Martin Pelletier passe premier par l'extérieur. Dès lors, il sera intouchable dépassant même le 12ème sur le tour des meneurs. Alex Lajoie #33 vient quant à lui frapper son deuxième podium à vie à l'Autodrome Granby, l'autre marqué en 2013. Lajoie part 8ème et rejoint le top 5 au huitième tour. Au 11ème tour, il fait le bas du 90 de Dany Gagné pour la 4ème place derrière Shane Pecore #0. Pecore avait passé troisième au tour 10 devant Gagné. Au 20ème passage, le 33 de Lajoie dépasse le 95 pour la deuxième et Pecore ne l'atteindra plus. Guy Ouellette #32 parti de la 11ème place, n'a pu compter sur aucune neutralisation pour remonter. Longtemps huitième, il dépasse le 24 de Jonathan Archambault, puis le 90 de Gagné par l'intérieur. Au 32ème tour, Ouellette passe le 18 d'Étienne Cournoyer pour s'inscrire en 5ème place. À cinq tours de la fin, le 32 passe le jeune Murray.

 

Samuel Desrochers #4 qui a vendu son bolide à Maxime Plante, a piloté son Bicknell 2008 qu'il avait peu utilisé dans le passé. Malheureusement, il a été victime d'un accident en qualification qui l'a fortement endommagé l'empêchant ainsi de participer à la consolation et à la finale.

Steve Bernier #25 part premier suivi du 21 de Yan Bussière. Ils restent dans cette position alors que le ONE de David Hébert parti 4ème se lancent troisième. Le 39 de Clément Therrien part 6ème et se jette quatrième. Ces positions restent telles quelles jusqu'au 48ème tour où le 39 qui en était à sa première visite chez nous est poussé aux puits. Alors que Bernier avait une grande avance depuis le début de la course, tout est à recommencer à deux tours de la fin. Le 25 se perd au large et le ONE passe par le bas pour sa première victoire de la saison. Dominic Dufault #63 part de la queue avec une stratégie différente des autres, le bas de la piste. Il rejoint le top 10 à la mi-course. Puis Dufault passe 7ème à 5 tours de la fin. À la dernière relance, il passe devant Alain et Mathieu Boisvert #73 et #73jr. La famille Boisvert nous a offert un beau duel toute la course pour la 5ème place.

Alors que le 338 de Pascal Payeur mène les cinq premiers passages, le 60 de Michel Larocque parti 3ème s'occupe de diriger le groupe jusqu'au 16ème tour. François Adam #01 parti 6ème se bat déjà pour la deuxième place au 6ème tour.  Adam fait l'intérieur du 338 au 7ème tour.  Un retardataire lui permettra dix tours plus tard de déloger Larocque. Jocelyn Roy parti 11ème est 5ème au 8ème tour. Roy fait l'extérieur de son protégé Payeur, puis l'intérieur du 17 de Jocelyn Chicoine. Au 19ème tour, Roy fait l'extérieur de Larocque #60 pour la deuxième place. Bissonnette #47 et Lemire #115 partent sur la ligne extérieure en 10 et 12ème position. Au tour 13, Bissonnette fait l'intérieur du 17 pour la quatrième position. Stéphane Lemire #115 est 7ème au 14ème passage derrière le 338 de Payeur qu'il ne dépassera que dans les derniers tours pour la cinquième place.

Waterbury, VT – The third American-Canadian Tour (ACT) International 500 on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19 at Plattsburgh, NY's Airborne Park Speedway is already drawing the top Late Model talent from around the Northeast United States and Canada. Hudson, NH's Joey Polewarczyk Jr. and St-Denis, QC's Patrick Laperle were victorious in the first two Internationals, but this year a large field of drivers from ACT's home state of Vermont will try to capture one or both of the 200-lap, $10,000-to-win events for the ACT Late Models and Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models.

 

Williston, VT's Brian Hoar is an early favorite in both the ACT and PASS events. The eight-time ACT Tour Champion finished second and fourth in the first two ACT Internationals. Hoar has an ACT Tour–record eight wins at the ½-mile oval, with the most recent in May 2013.

 

"To win any race is a big deal, and of course to win one or both of the races at the International would be cool," Hoar said. "They're both big races – it's the first time PASS is there, and we've been going after the ACT race. We've come close and had a good car the past couple years but have come up short, so winning it would be a big day."

 

Fellow Vermonter Bobby Therrien will join Hoar in doing double-duty, along with Laperle, defending ACT Tour Champion Joey Polewarczyk Jr., two-time Série ACT Champion Donald Theetge.

 

"Physically it's going to be demanding, both for the crew and for me," Hoar said of running both events. "You also take your focus from one car and split it between two cars, and that makes it even more challenging."

 

East Montpelier, VT's Emily Packard will also challenge for the ACT Late Model win. The 18-year-old ranks seventh in ACT Tour points and will try to replicate her success from the similarly-configured Devil's Bowl Speedway in West Haven, VT.

 

Barre's Nick Sweet leads a contingent of weekly Thunder Road Late Model drivers into the International. Sweet came up just short of the International prize in 2014 after being overtaken by Laperle in the final circuits.

 

Sweet has been locked in a fierce battle this summer for the "King of the Road" title while also competing on the ACT Tour for Eric Chase. After winning a record-tying fourth Vermont Governor's Cup this past Thursday, July 9, Sweet is ready to turn his focus to Airborne.

 

"It's be nice to do well in the International," Sweet said. "We've got to get some work done and hopefully have a good run there. That's one thing we've really got to focus on. It'd be nice to win that thing."

 

Sweet will be joined by Graniteville's John Donahue, who currently ranks fourth in the Thunder Road Late Model point standings. Former Airborne Late Model Champion David Whitcomb and veteran Chase will make the trek, as will Boomer Morris and second-year competitor Jason Allen. Longtime Thunder Road regular Brooks Clark will also contend for the International win after running a limited 2015 schedule to date.

 

"It would just show the talent level at Thunder Road if one of our guys wins," Sweet said. "The talent here is phenomenal. All the guys that run around here all year long are fun to race against, and it doesn't get any better than that."

 

The ACT International 500 at Plattsburgh, NY's Airborne Park Speedway is Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19. The ACT Late Models and PASS Super Late Models will both run 200-lap, $10,000-to-win events. Open wheel fans will also enjoy Quebec's RevStar Sprint Car Speedsters and Slingshots. Qualifying for all divisions is on Saturday, July 18 at 6:30pm, with features beginning at 1:00pm on Sunday, July 19. General admission is $40 for a two-day ticket, $20 for Saturday only, and $35 for Sunday only. Reserved seats are $60 for two days or $50 for Sunday only.
