Devil's Bowl Speedway Statement on the Passing of Leon Gonyo

WEST HAVEN, VT – Devil's Bowl Speedway management and staff are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of long time stock car racing competitor Leon Gonyo. Mr. Gonyo, 63, of Chazy, NY, won the speedway's final asphalt NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Modified race of the season on the evening of Saturday, September 19, 2015 but succumbed soon after.
Mr. Gonyo appeared to suffer a medical event while driving his racecar around the speedway during a ceremonial victory lap. His car then made an impact into the frontstretch retaining wall before approaching the victory lane area. Mr. Gonyo utilized proper safety equipment including an approved helmet, seat, and restraining belts. The car was inspected following the incident and was deemed to be mechanically and structurally sound.
Devil's Bowl Speedway official Dick Therrien sustained minor injuries when the car struck a ladder that he was standing on, but is recovering at home after being evaluated at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Gonyo was a true gentleman of the sport and enjoyed a racing career with more than 40 years of success at many race tracks in the northeastern United States and Canada. His talents seemed to only improve with age, proven by his final victory on Saturday night – his fifth win of the season at Devil's Bowl Speedway and his seventh overall in 2015.
Much more than just a winner, Leon Gonyo was a very well-respected and highly regarded member of the local stock car racing community, and was presented with Devil's Bowl Speedway's highest honor for 2013, the John Bruno Award, which is given annually to someone who has made a significant contribution to short track racing during their lifetime while maintaining high standards of conduct and respect on and off the track. Mr. Gonyo met and far surpassed the award's criteria and was a leader in the community.
The effort and care shown in assisting Mr. Gonyo on Saturday night was nothing short of incredible, and Devil's Bowl Speedway thanks the Fair Haven Rescue medical staff on site, the Devil's Bowl Speedway Safety Team, and the many people who volunteered to help, for their personal care and professionalism.
Our thoughts and very best wishes are with Leon Gonyo's family and race team, his wide-reaching fan base, and the community of Chazy, New York. Devil's Bowl Speedway thanks its legion of racing fans, competitors, officials, staff and volunteers, sponsors, and media members for their outpouring of support and asks that the same continues to be extended to the Gonyo family.

Autumn Colours Classic at Peterborough Speedway is Anyone's Race to Win

It could come down to a roll of the dice, a lucky break or being in the right place at the right time.
Even with the nickname Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval, Peterborough Speedway is known as a driver's track. Finding your way to Dart Heating & Air Conditioning Victory Lane can come down to a number of different factors, but having a perfect race car isn't usually one of them. Any driver in any of the divisions competing at this year's Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – has a realistic chance of taking home the hardware from a win at the 23rdedition of the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing.
In past seasons, feature event fields in most divisions were comprised of more than 20 starters. A toss of a coin here or there could make the difference between a top 5 finish and a trip to the winner's circle. More often than not, a solid run could be decided by some good racing luck. With Autumn Colours drawing the best of the best from tracks all across the province, repeat winners have been rare. Dwayne Baker took the Limited Late Model wins in 2012 and 2013, while Mike Bentley won the Pro Late Model main events in the same years.
The 23rd Annual Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – takes the green flag Friday, October 9th practice and first round qualifying for the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Mini Stock, Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car, Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model, Pro Late Model and OSCAAR Modified divisions. Pit gates will open at 10:00, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at5:00 and racing at 6:00. Action will continue throughout the weekend with plenty of excitement scheduled for Saturday, October 10th and feature events on the agenda Sunday, October 11th.

STECKLY TIES RECORD FOR ACTIVE TOURING SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES
FRASERVILLE, ON (September 19, 2015) – Today at Kawartha Speedway, Scott Steckly driver of the Canadian Tire Dodge completed the final leg of his 2015 journey, winning the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 championship, his fourth in nine seasons. With the win Steckly ties active NASCAR Touring and National series competitors with his fourth championship and he is the 33 in NASCAR history to win four or more.
"This year was different than our 2013 championship where we had to come from behind," said Steckly. "This year we were being chased by two very good competitors for this big prize. But our philosophy entering this event didn't change as we hoped to have a car good enough to run up front and win the race. We also love coming to Kawartha Speedway as it is a great track for racing on and we always run well here."
During time trials, the Milverton, Ontario racer lapped the high-banked 3/8-mile oval in 17.666 seconds setting a new track record and taking the pole starting position. He is now tied for the lead in all time pole wins with seventeen.
Steckly' s goal for the 250 lap Pinty's 250 event was to stay up front, lead some laps and finish in the top three. After leading the initial 47 laps, Steckly dropped back to second where he continued to follow race leader and eventual winner Jason Hathaway. "I knew all I had to do was finish second to him and we had the championship won," said a jubilant Steckly after the winning Championship number four. "It was really an uneventful race which worked out great for us. My 22 Racing Team is absolutely the best and I know I say that all the time but there is just none better than my group. And we wouldn't be where we are without all of our fantastic sponsors who support us no matter what. Winning these championships never gets old, this one feels just as good as the first one."
The 2015 season kicked-off at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on May 17, with Steckly finishing with one of his several top five positions. He would start winning races at event five in Edmonton followed up by Saskatoon and then a few weeks later at Riverside Speedway. All in all he posted three wins, seven top five finishes and ten top ten finishes with four poles and entered the finale at Kawartha with nine point advantage over Ranger & Hathaway for the championship.
The Pinty's 250 will air on TSN on Saturday October 3rd at 1 p.m. and on RDS on Thursday October 22nd at 7 p.m.

OMRS Heads to Flamboro Speedway for Frostfest to Close the 2015 Season

A successful 2015 season for the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – is about to see the checkered flag. Drivers and teams will head for Flamboro Speedway, near Hamilton for a pair of events – Friday and Saturday, October 2nd and 3rd – that will determine this year's tour champion.
With 8 of the season's events in the record book, Donny Beatty has a slim 2 point advantage over Nick Lees in the fight for the title. Ironically, neither driver has yet to score a main event. Consistency has been the key throughout the schedule and Richard Warnes – who along with Bill Pickford and Randy Hollingsworth make up the OMRS group of officials – says there has been a level playing field since the first green flag.
"All along, our mandate has been to create a competitive and affordable racing series," said Warnes. "If you look at the top 5 positions in the standings, the biggest gap anywhere is between 4th and 5thplace. And even there, the difference is only 17 points. The top 5 spots in the overall running order are just 59 markers apart. With a pair feature events on the agenda at Flamboro, it could really change the final running order."
After a stretch of disappointing runs to start the year, Alex Lees has won the last 2 events on the schedule. The victories – Saturday, August 29th at Peterborough and Saturday, September 5th at Flamboro – weren't enough to put the Cameron, Ontario racer into championship contention, but he now sits 8th in the standings, less than 100 markers out of the top spot.
Series officials have announced that this year's awards celebration will once again be held Saturday, November 14th at the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre in Oshawa.

Barre, VT – Williamstown, VT's Jimmy Hebert has filed the first official entry for the 53rdNorthfield Savings Bank Milk Bowl on Sunday, October 11. The 2015 edition of the "toughest short-track stock car race in North America" has more than $60,000 in posted awards with $10,000 guaranteed to the winner of the annual Thunder Road Speedbowl season finale.
The Milk Bowl is one of the most celebrated auto racing events in the United States with its unique race format and tradition. The special event for American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Models is run in three 50-lap segments, with the starting grid for the second and third segments set by inverting the finishing order of the previous segment. Drivers receive one point per position, per segment, with the lowest combined finish for all three segments earning the overall win.
"The Milk Bowl means a lot," Hebert said. "I grew up watching it as a kid, and it was definitely the biggest race at my home track (Thunder Road). We're excited for it this year – we've finally started to figure things out at Thunder Road. We've had some tough luck the last couple years and couple of car issues, but I think we're in pretty good shape this year."
In addition to the $10,000 minimum winner's purse, posted awards include a $1,000 bonus for the driver setting the fastest time in time trials and $500 for the driver with the second-fastest time. $7,500 in lap leader awards are also up for grabs and will be distributed among the top-three drivers on each lap of the event.
The winner's list for the Milk Bowl includes some of the most celebrated names in Northeast auto racing history. Robbie Crouch holds the record with four Milk Bowl wins, while St-Denis, QC's Patrick Laperle and Williston, VT's Brian Hoar lead active ACT drivers with three victories each.
Former NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kevin Lepage and 1960s legend Russ Ingerson were also three-time winners. Other former champions of the event include inaugural winner Harold Hannaford; Dave Dion; Beaver, Bobby, and Brent Dragon; Nick Sweet; and defending champion Eddie MacDonald.
The two-day event begins Saturday, October 10 at 1:30pm with Booth Bros./H.P. Hood Qualifying Day. Time trials and "Triple 50" qualifying races will set the first 26 spots in the 30-car Milk Bowl starting field, with the balance determined by the last-chance "B-Feature" Sunday, October 11 at 1:00pm. Saturday's program also includes time trials and the first segments of "Mini Milk Bowls" for the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen and Allen Lumber Street Stocks.
Advance adult admission for the 53rd Northfield Savings Bank Milk Bowl is just $30 for a two-day ticket or $25 for Sunday only. Kids age 12 and under are admitted free.
