Parker Traves Shines in a Trailers Plus Canadian Legend Car Start at Peterborough Speedway

It took a while longer than anyone had expected but drivers and teams with the Trailers Plus Canadian Legend Car Series were happy to finally open the 2022 schedule Saturday, June 4th at Peterborough Speedway. 

 

Coming from inside the 3rd row, Parker Traves followed his friend and teammate Matt Haufe and moved into the 3rd spot in the running order with just 3 laps on the scoreboard. The pair had been chasing race leader Hudson Nagy since the drop of the green flag and had started to work through traffic at the tail-end of the field with only 5 laps complete. 

 

While the leaders had to work through slower cars, those running a lap down were also battling for race positions at the same time as the front runners. That led to the first yellow flag in the 30 lap affair at the halfway mark and saw Haufe take control of the field on the ensuing restart. 

 

Haufe is no stranger to the Dart Heating and Air Conditioning victory lane at Peterborough Speedway but with the race slowed a number of times for yellow flags during the closing stages, all eyes were on Parker Traves. A member of the Canadian Legend Car dealer network, Traves took full advantage of the tour's unique 'choose' rule and grabbed the lead from Haufe. The driver of the No. 60 machine held the point through a green, white checkered finish to become the tour's first winner of the 2022 season. 

 

Haufe rebounded from a late race restart at the tail of the field to finish 2nd. Dawson Drimmie, Jordan Latimer, Josh Inglis, Mark Griffin, Nick Portt, Glenn Morris, Steve Gareau, Caleb Drimmie, Chad Strawn, Joe Adams, Hudson Nagy, Cameron Townson, Jeff McKibbon, Wally Wilson and Adam Cuthbertson completed the running order. 

 

Trailers Plus Canadian Legend Car Series Peterborough notes: Adam Cuthbertson's 17th place finish came from a penalty from race officials after a pair of warnings about bumping a competitor…15-year-old Cameron Townson logged a 14th place in his first ever racing start…The Canadian Legend Car Series thanks long-time sponsor Trailers Plus for their continued support of the tour. The action at Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile Oval is about to get even hotter, as Lucas Oil Products presents the Summer Kick-Off – Saturday, June 11th – at Peterborough Speedway. 

 

Make your plans now to head to the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road for a great night of racing with the hometown Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck and KOD Disposal Super Stock divisions, plus the Trailers Plus Canadian Legend Car Series and Kid's Rides at intermission.  

 

Pit gates open at 2:30, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and the first green flag at 6:00. Event passes can be ordered online by using the 'buy tickets' option on the track website or the trackside walk-up window on raceday.  

 

Still to come this month will be the much-anticipated return of the APC Pro Late Model tour, with the Qwick Wick Firestarter Super Stock Series, presented by KOD Disposal, Saturday, June 18th. The local Bone Stock and Renegade Truck teams will also be part of the show. For this event, pit gates will open at 12:30, with the spectator grandstand unlocked at 3:00 and racing at 5:00. 

 

The year's annual Autism Awareness Night – in support of www.cnaf.net, the Canadian National Autism Foundation – Saturday, June 25th will play host to the home track Bone Stock, Mini Stock, Super Stock and Late Model divisions, along with the GEN-3 Electrical Ontario Modifieds Racing Series and the Can-Am TQ Midgets, presented by Qwick Wick Firestarter.

Racing's Saturday Night Spotlight Shines at Peterborough Speedway

Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile Oval continues its 55th consecutive season of action Saturday, June 4th with the year's first Double Toonie/Fan Appreciation Night, presented by Pepsi. 

 

Catch a full night of racing at Peterborough Speedway with the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock and hometown Late Model divisions, plus the Outlaw Midgets and the season opener for the Canadian Legend Car Series. Grandstand admission is just $4.00 and there will also be an on-track driver autograph session at intermission. 

 

"Our season opener saw some impressive car counts across the board and we're hoping to build on that momentum throughout the 2022 season," explained track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse. "COVID-19 restrictions have been eliminated. Now its time to get out and enjoy a family night at the speedway again." 

 

This weekend, pit gates will open at 1:30, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 4:00 and the field will take the night's first Great Canadian RV green flag at 5:00. For event passes, fans can always choose the 'buy tickets' option on the track website or buy tickets at the track walk-up window on raceday.  

 

Looking ahead at the schedule finds the Summer Kick-Off, presented by Lucas Oil Products with the Bone Stock, Mini Stock, Renegade Truck, Super Stocks and Legends Saturday, June 11th. KOD Disposal presents the long-awaited return of the APC Pro Late Model Series, along with the Qwick Wick Firestarter Super Stocks, Bone Stocks and Renegade Trucks Saturday, June 18th. Saturday, June 25th sees the home track Bone Stock, Mini Stock, Super Stock and Late Model divisions joined by the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series and TQ Midgets for the annual Autism Awareness Night. Canada's Toughest 3rd Mile Oval Kicks-Off its 2022 Schedule

Thanks to all the hard work and dedication of track staff and friends from the provincial motorsports community, the team at Peterborough Speedway was able to bounce back to action Saturday, May 28th for the 'Beat the Storm Night' a week after the facility sustained catastrophic damage during a derecho storm. 

 

The 2022 Pure Country 105 Season Opener saw the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks come to the line first for main event action, as reigning rookie of the year Kyle Gordon and Shawn Murray brought the pack to the green flag. Gordon took the early lead, with Stephen Bierworth heading pit-side to replace a flat tire with only a couple of circuits on the scoreboard. Gordon's No. 52 pick-up was set on cruise as he led every lap. Stacy Switzer, Paul Boundy, Bill O'Hara and Kurt Batty rounded-out the top 5. 

 

Brad Lavalle and Steve Finnegan showed the way as the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stockers rolled from the staging area. At the drop of the green flag, Finnegan shot into the lead from his outside front row starting spot. He built-up a 2 second lead over Lavalle, who relinquished the runner-up spot to Jake Kelly just passed the halfway mark. While the lead duo was pacing the field, Sean Kennedy was trying the outside line to wrestle the 3rd spot away from Lavalle, who thwarted every attack. Finnegan opened the 2022 schedule with a checkered flag over Kelly, Lavalle and Kennedy. Angelo Novis scored a top 5 finish. 

 

Next to take the Great Canadian RV green flag was the Jiffy Lube Mini Stock field, with Kevin Strutt and reigning track champion Jeremy Kelly on the front row. Kelly grabbed an early lead over Strutt, with a 3-wide fight for 3rd in his rear-view mirror. The pack started to catch slower traffic with less than a handful of circuits on the board and after a lap 9 yellow flag, Tyler Junkin took the lead with former Bone Stock champion Shawn Solomon moving into 2nd. Even with tight battles throughout the field, Junkin took the win. Solomon, Kelly and Strutt were next across the line, with Rob Crick finishing 5th. 

 

With 25 laps to settle the score Mark Gordon and Bailey Jacobs led the KOD Disposal Super Stock runners to the stripe. As his son Kyle had done in the Renegade Truck 'A' main, Mark Gordon took the lead early and despite having Jacobs on his back bumper, never looked back. The pace was slowed for a pair of yellow flags before the lap counter showed 10 complete but close was as close as Jacobs could get to the leader. Paul Boundy's strong run resulted in a 3rd place finish, just ahead of a hard charging Brandon Feeney who said his No. 38 machine was the best car he'd ever had at the track. Crowd favourite Marlie Owen was 5th at the checkered flag. 

 

The Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, presented by GEN-3 Electrical was the final feature event of Peterborough Speedway's 2022 opening night. Randy Hollingsworth and Bob Franks brought the field to the line. A 3-wide fight for the front saw Chad Strawn take the lead with OMRS newcomer Rob Richards moving into 2nd. After a lap 3 restart, John Baker Jr. moved into the runner-up position but his night ended early because of rear-end issues. Strawn claimed the first checkered flag of the season with hard charging youngster Alex Cuzzilla taking 2nd. Richards was 3rd, with Tyler Bouillon – also in his first career series start 4th. Rob Warnes was 5th at the stripe. 

 

Kyle Gordon took a pair of Renegade Truck heat races, while Finnegan racked-up a couple of Bone Stock qualifiers. Jake Kelly and Sean Kennedy split the other 2. Shawn Solomon made the most of his Mini Stock debut with 2 preliminary round victories. Defending track champion Jeremy Kelly and Rob Crick had the others. Paul Boundy and Bailey Jacobs split the Super Stock qualifiers, with Alex Cuzzilla setting the pace with his 2 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series heats. John Baker Jr. and Chad Strawn landed the others. 

 

Bullring bullet points: With close to a full house on hand to watch the action, Darrin Crowher of Omemee, Ontario took home close to $1050.00 in the night's 50/50 draw…It was rough night for Dylan Wills. After experiencing some mechanical gremlins earlier in the night, his No. 28 Mini Stock burst into flames during the feature event. Track clean-up crews came to the aid of the driver, who was unhurt…The future of local racing appears to be in very good hands as fans were delighted by the first laps for the Junior Late Model class, featuring Lyla Sikma and Kaiden Beatty. The class will return to the track Saturday, July 9th and officials are expecting the ranks to grow as additional teams come on board. 

 

In the wake of the Saturday, May 21st damaging wind and rainstorm, Peterborough Speedway officials learned the true meaning of racing teamwork as many drivers and friends took time away from their regular jobs and family commitments to help get things into race-ready condition for the event dubbed 'Beat the Storm Night'. Track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse says there were far too many people to mention and thank individually, but he took a few minutes following the trackside Fan Appreciation autograph session to express his appreciation and gratitude. 

 

Next on the 2022 docket will be the year's first Fan Appreciation Night – presented by Pepsi – with general admission grandstand tickets at only $4.00. On track action has the season opening events for the hometown Late Model and Canadian Legend Car divisions, on a night that also includes the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stocks and Outlaw Midgets. Pit gates open at 1:30, with spectator grandstands unlocked at 4:00 and racing at 5:00.

Peterborough Speedway Moves its 2022 Opener to Saturday, May 28th

After having the word 'pivot' as part of their vocabulary for last couple of years, officials at Peterborough Speedway were once again forced to make a last minute change to the posted schedule. On what had been lined-up as this year's first night of racing, a fierce storm – with high winds and driving rain – blew in, necessitating a shift to Saturday, May 28th for the venue's 2022 Pure Country 105 Season Opener. 

 

"I don't think I've ever seen a storm like that before," track owner/promoter J.P. Josiasse explained. "The sky got dark and then the wind picked-up. After that, all we could do was watch things develop and wonder when it was going to stop and how much damage there would be." 

 

Josiasse says once things settled-down, he and a few members of the track promotional team took a walk around the property and tried to make some mental notes on the scope of the destruction. Right off the bat, the call to postpone the night's racing activity was the first decision to be made. 

Next, it was time to start planning the site clean-up and look at options for when the 2022 schedule could get rolling. 

 

"Even with the amount of damage that the storm caused, we have to look at things in a positive light," Josiasse offered. "With free grandstand admission, opening night is always one of the most popular events on our schedule. We were about an hour away from opening the spectator gates and the place would have been filled with fans. We're very fortunate that no one was injured." 

 

Luckily, the weather since the storm has been relatively calm. That has allowed a team of staff and volunteers to work on cleaning-up the grounds and making some necessary repairs that will lead to the reopening. The Saturday, May 28th show will feature free spectator admission and racing with a 50 lap main event for the Jiffy Lube Mini Stocks, plus the hometown Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck and KOD Disposal Super Stock divisions. Also on the calendar will be the season opener for the GEN-3 Electrical Ontario Modifieds Racing Series and the debut of the Junior Late Model class. Pit gates will open at 1:30, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 3:00. Racing starts at 5:00.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (APRIL 28, 2022) - NASCAR and Texas Motor Speedway today announced the format and eligibility for the NASCAR All-Star Race on Sunday, May 22, that features four stages and 125 laps of on-track competition for a $1 million payday, stage winner incentives, amplified roles for the pit crews, and a distinctive head-to-head elimination qualifying format.

 

The NASCAR All-Star Race returns to Texas Motor Speedway for the second consecutive season and this 38th edition brings some unique twists for the eligible Cup drivers pursuing the winner-take-all $1 million payday. The most prominent twist will come in the form of a four-round qualifying format with head-to-head elimination rounds and the pivotal role of the pit crews.

 

Qualifying

 

  • Opening round is the traditional single-car, one-lap format in reverse order of the current 2022 owner points.
  • Fastest eight qualifiers transfer to a three-round, head-to-head elimination bracket.
  • Elimination bracket will feature two cars staged in adjacent pit stalls near the end of pit road.
  • At the sound of an alert, each pit crew will perform a four-tire stop and, at the drop of the jack, drivers will exit their pit stalls (with no speed limit) onto the track.
  • First car back to the start/finish line advances to the next round.
  • Final pairing competes for the pole.

 

Race Format

 

The race will consist of four stages, with the first three 25 laps in length and the fourth and final being a 50-lap shootout for the $1 million prize. The new format has provided a major incentive to win any of the opening three stages or the pit stop competition during the break between Stages 2 and 3.

 

Stage 1 (25 laps): Stage 1 winner will start on the pole in the final stage as long as he finishes 15th or better in Stages 2 and 3.

 

Stage 2 (25 laps): Stage 2 winner starts second in final stage as long as he finishes 15th or better in Stage 3.

 

Special Stage Break (Pit Stop Competition): Each team must pit and perform a four-tire stop. The team with the shortest time on pit road (pit in/pit out) wins the pit crew award and the driver will start fourth in the final stage as long as he finishes 15th or better in Stage 3.

 

Stage 3 (25 laps): Stage 3 winner starts third in final stage.

 

Stage 4 (50 laps): Stage 1 winner starts first, Stage 2 winner second, Stage 3 winner third and pit stop competition winner fourth. If a "natural" caution occurs between laps 15-25 of the final stage, standard race procedures will be in effect. If no "natural" caution occurs during that time, NASCAR will call an "All Star" competition caution. Winner of the Stage 4 earns $1 million.

 

"The NASCAR All-Star Race highlights our best athletes -- from the driver to road crew to the pit crews -- and this year's edition brings that to another level," said Scott Miller, NASCAR Sr. Vice President, Competition. "Fans will have a full weekend of exciting competition starting with a unique qualifying format and an All-Star Race that features the top talent in our sport."

 

"The incredible intensity of the drivers and teams as well as the Texas-sized excitement from our race fans is what makes the NASCAR All-Star Race just that much more special," Texas Motor Speedway General Manager Rob Ramage said. "The never-seen-before qualifying format will put even more pressure on drivers and pits crews to perform at their peak. Combining that with the easier-to-follow race format will create more action-packed competition for race fans at Texas Motor Speedway and those watching on FS1 as they watch their favorite drivers battle to earn a $1 million payday."

 

The NASCAR Open will immediately precede the NASCAR All-Star Race and will consist of three stages (20 laps / 20 laps / 10 laps). Each segment winner will advance to the NASCAR All-Star Race as will the winner of the Fan Vote. Fans can vote for their favorite driver who has not qualified for the NASCAR All-Star Race by visiting NASCAR.com for details.

 

Drivers eligible for the NASCAR All-Star Race consist of:

  • Cup Series drivers who have earned a points-paying race victory in either 2021 or 2022.
  • Previous NASCAR All-Star Race winners who are competing full-time this season.
  • Previous NASCAR Cup Series champions who are competing full-time this season.

 

Drivers who currently have clinched a starting spot (through Talladega) and making return visits to the NASCAR All-Star Race are AJ Allmendinger, Aric Almirola, Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, Chase Briscoe, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, William Byron, Ross Chastain, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, Michael McDowell, Martin Truex Jr., and Bubba Wallace.

 

Cup Series rookie Austin Cindric qualified for his first NASCAR All-Star Race appearance by winning the Daytona 500 in February.

 

Country music superstar Blake Shelton will perform a live 60-minute concert May 22 beginning at 3 p.m. as part of the NASCAR All-Star pre-race festivities. The full day of NASCAR competition and entertainment activities will conclude with a 60-minute post-race concert performed by legendary Mexican ranchero music group Banda MS.

 

Coverage of the NASCAR All-Star Race - sponsored by NASCAR's Premier Partners Busch Light Beer, Coca-Cola, GEICO and Xfinity – will begin May 22 at 5 p.m. ET on FS1. The NASCAR Open will begin at 6 p.m. on FS1, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90, MRN, and 95.9 The Ranch and the NASCAR All-Star Race at 8 p.m. on FS1, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90, MRN, and 95.9 The Ranch.

For the first night of the 2022 schedule, action gets underway with the Pure Country 105 season opener – featuring free spectator grandstand admission – Saturday, May 21st. Fans will experience a full night of racing with the hometown Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck, KOD Disposal Super Stock and Late Model divisions, along with the Canadian Legend Car Series. Pit gates open at 12:30, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 3:00 and the night's first green flag at 5:00.

Eldora Speedway Names New General Manager

Motorsports Industry Veteran Jerry Gappens Joins World's Greatest Dirt Track

ROSSBURG, Ohio (April 18, 2022) – Eldora Speedway has named veteran motorsports executive Jerry Gappens as its new general manager, succeeding Roger Slack, who has decided to call time on his 12-year career at Eldora.

 

Gappens comes to Eldora from Indiana's Gas City I-69 Speedway where he has been the promotor of the quarter-mile, dirt oval since 2018. Prior to his tenure at Gas City, Gappens spent 23 years with Speedway Motorsports, specifically serving as executive vice president and general manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon for eight years (2008-2015) and senior vice president of events and marketing of Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway for 15 years (1993-2007).

 

Slack, the outgoing general manager of Eldora who has spent more than three decades in motorsports, is taking a sabbatical from the industry.

 

"Jerry Gappens brings a ton of experience to Eldora Speedway that will allow us to deliver the best fan experience possible, as well as the best experience for all the racers who compete at our track," said Eldora owner Tony Stewart, who purchased the track from the legendary Earl Baltes in 2004. "Jerry knows grassroots racing from being at Gas City and he also knows how to put on big events from his time at New Hampshire and Charlotte.

 

"I know from my own experience racing at New Hampshire and Charlotte that Jerry genuinely cared about the amenities and overall environment the fans had in the grandstands and the drivers and teams had in the infield. He was visible, out and about, accessible, and no job was too small. The details mattered. It's exactly what we need at Eldora."

 

Carved from a cornfield in 1954, Eldora has become a leader in motorsports growth and sustainability. The half-mile, dirt oval hosts some of the most prestigious grassroots racing events in the world, and this year marks its 69th consecutive season of racing. Eldora's 2022 racing slate begins April 26 with FloRacing Night in America featuring dirt late models, modifieds and Eldora stocks, and lasts through late September with the 4-Crown Nationals which includes the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series, USAC National Midgets, Sprint Cars and Silver Crown, and the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1.

 

"When Tony called and asked if I was interested in becoming the general manager of Eldora, I recognized immediately that this is a great, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Gappens said. "Dirt racing is in my blood and Eldora is the most legendary short-track racing venue in the country. I'm thrilled to join the team at Eldora and work together to further its already outstanding legacy.

 

"I also want to thank Jack Himelick, owner of Gas City I-69 Speedway, for trusting me with the stewardship of his track for the past four years. I'm very proud of all that we accomplished together during that time, and I want to give a special and heartfelt 'thank you' to the fans, staff and competitors for their support."

 

The 60-year-old Gappens was introduced to racing by his father, Jerry Gappens Sr. The Gappens Family hailed from Tipton County, Indiana, and not long after Jerry Jr., was born, the two visited local dirt tracks, including Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway where Jerry Sr., raced in the 1960s.

 

"I remember riding in the truck with him on the way home with the racecar on the trailer behind us. I'd put his racing helmet on and fall asleep across the seat in the truck," Gappens Jr., said. "He took me to my first Indy 500 when I was 8-years old back in 1969 and we didn't miss an Indy 500 until I went to work at Charlotte Motor Speedway."

 

The job of track promotor was taught to a young Gappens by his father, as Gappens Sr., promoted the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track for a couple of years while working at General Motors and raising a family. 

 

"He really helped bring the Terre Haute Action Track back to life," Gappens Jr., said. "It had been idle for a year or two. Our whole family went down there and cleaned it up and painted it and got some races back on the schedule."

 

Gappens' dad passed away in 2012, and during his time at Gas City, he honored his father with the Jerry Gappens Sr. Memorial Cup, an annual race that hosted the top sprint car drivers across the country.

 

"I'm fortunate to have two great parents and I appreciate all the time and energy they put into everything they did. Honoring dad was a way to recognize his legacy and his contributions to short-track racing," Gappens said.

 

"I'm taking that same approach with all the great events Eldora has on tap this year, including the return of The Eldora Million on June 9, one of the most legendary events in the track's history."

 

The Eldora Million has only been run once before – in 2001 when Donnie Moran, the four-time World 100 winner, outdueled Don O'Neal, an eventual Dirt Late Model Dream champion, to take the $1 million payday.

 

The Eldora Million on June 9 will feature a full program of racing action with tournament-style preliminary features on June 8 that will set the event's heat races before culminating with the $1 million-to-win championship feature.  

 

The combination of two giant shows – The Eldora Million and the 28th running of the $128,000-to-win Dirt Late Model Dream June 10-11 – all in a span of four days – creates one of the richest open competition events in motorsports history with posted prize money in excess of $1.9 million.

 

All four days of racing from the Dirt Late Model Dream Week, including The Eldora Million, will be available worldwide exclusively on FloRacing, Eldora's official livestream partner.

NASCAR Pinty's Series To Race at Eastbound International Speedway

The historic June race will be the series' first in Newfoundland and Labrador

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 11, 2022) — NASCAR today announced that the fourth race of the 2022 NASCAR Pinty's Series season will take place at Eastbound International Speedway and Concert Park in Avondale, Newfoundland. The Proline 225 will be run Saturday, June 25 during the province's Come Home 2022 celebration and marks the first race for the Pinty's Series in Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

The event is part of a three-year partnership between NASCAR, Eastbound International Speedway and the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation. The race will be the culmination of a series of activities for fans including autograph sessions, concerts, and a NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series race, which will be held on Friday night.

 

"Bringing the NASCAR Pinty's Series to Newfoundland and Labrador is a historic milestone for NASCAR in Canada," said Brandon Igdalsky, NASCAR Managing Director, NASCAR Touring Series. "As Canada's largest national motorsports series, we strive to bring the exciting side-by-side racing NASCAR is known for to fans across the country.
