Quebec’s Larue Brothers Accept Prestigious MacTavish Award

Burlington, VT – The American Canadian Tour (ACT) held its annual Banquet of Champions at the Doubletree Inn in Burlington, VT on Saturday, January 11. ACT honored its 2013 champions and top ten competitors from the Northeastern U.S.-based ACT Late Model Tour and the Quebec-based Série ACT. ACT Late Model competitors from across the region battled in point counting and special events for their share of over $900,000 in purses and point funds during 2013.

Wayne Helliwell, Jr. of Dover, NH and car owner Bruce Bernhardt earned their second straight ACT Late Model Tour title in 2013. Helliwell defended his 2012 title with two feature wins and another ACT Championship. He and his team narrowly avoided disaster in the final event of the season and hung on to their slim lead to earn the title. Helliwell and Bernhardt also claimed the Ford Blue Oval Cup title for the fourth straight season.

Jean-François Déry from Quebec City, QC claimed his first career Série ACT Championship in one of the closest battles in Série history. The veteran Série ACT competitor and perennial frontrunner picked up two feature wins during his title bid. He claimed the championship by just eight points in the highly competitive series that visits several tracks across the province of Quebec.

Brothers Denis and Louis Larue were awarded the prestigious Don MacTavish Award for their support and dedication to ACT and the sport of stock car racing. The Larue brothers have owned and managed a top-tier team on the Série ACT since its inception in 2007. They continue to be an integral part of the success of the Quebec-based series.

The annual Crew Chief of the Year Awards were also presented for both the ACT U.S. and the Série ACT at the banquet. Joe Polewarczyk of Hudson, NH earned the U.S. award after turning wrenches and spotting for his son Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. The Polewarczyk team finished second in the standings after claiming four feature wins in 2013. Andre Beaudoin received the honors for the Série ACT Crew Chief of the Year Award. As a former driver-turned-crew chief, Beaudoin helped guide driver Alex Labbe and the Larue team to a runner-up finish in the 2013 standings.

Rookie of the Year Awards went to Bobby Therrien (ACT U.S.) and Martin Goulet, Jr. (Série ACT). Therrien joined a short list of drivers to earn a feature win during their rookie season on his way to the rookie title. Goulet steadily improved during his first season on the Série ACT and claimed a top ten in the final standings.

American Canadian Tour Late Model teams will return to action in just a few short months with the season opening NH Governor’s Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH on Sunday, April 13. The 2014 Série ACT season will kick off with a 100-lap event at Autodrome St-Eustache in St-Eustache, QC on Saturday, May 24.

(Burlington, VT) – Plusieurs pilotes et membres d’équipe du Québec ont été honorés, hier soir à Burlington, à l’occasion du banquet regroupant les deux séries de l’ACT. Parmi ceux-ci, on remarque Jean-François Déry de Québec, les frères Denis et Louis Larue, André Beaudoin et Martin Goulet jr.

Le summum lors de cette soirée est sans contredit l’attribution du prix Don MacTavish qui est remis à une ou des personnes dans le giron de l’American Canadian Tour pour leur engagement inconditionnel envers l’ACT. Hier soir, les frères Denis et Louis Larue de Larue Équipement de déneigement se sont vus attribuer cette plus haute marque de distinction. Ces derniers ont été récompensés pour les efforts déployés auprès de l’ACT depuis son retour au Québec en 2007 et également leur dévouement envers le stock-car québécois. On sait qu’ils ont toujours présenté une équipe à la fine pointe et surtout très compétitive. Donald Theetge de Québec avait reçu le même honneur en 2010.

Leur nouveau pilote qui a pris la relève du Félicinois Karl Allard, le jeune Alex Labbé n’a pas mis trop de temps pour s’acclimater avec ce groupe et ce n’est que la faible marge de huit points qu’il a vu le championnat lui glisser entre les doigts.

Également, Jean-François Déry de Québec a finalement coiffé officiellement de titre de la saison 2013 de la série ACT-Québec. Il s’agissait de son premier championnat après avoir terminé deuxième lors de l’année précédente. En 11 départs cette saison, Déry, au volant de sa Camry, a paradé à deux reprises dans le cercle des vainqueurs et a terminé parmi les cinq premiers en neuf occasions. Celui qui ne croyait pas assister à cette soirée, car son épouse doit accoucher d’ici quelques semaines, a touché un chèque de 20,000$ pour son exploit.

Pour sa part, dixième au cumulatif de la saison, Martin Goulet Jr. de Mascouche a été proclamé la recrue de l’ACT-Québec. Sous les conseils judicieux de son paternel qui est aussi pilote, Martin n’a cessé d’acquérir de l’expérience et à sa première saison complète, il a terminé parmi les dix premiers à trois reprises.

Bien mérité

Choix bien mérité en ce qui concerne le chef d’équipe par excellence dans l’ACT-Québec. Un autre honneur pour l’équipe Larue alors qu’André Beaudoin a été choisi. Ancien pilote lui-même, il a su mettre son expérience au profit de l’équipe Larue. Cela a contribué au championnat de 2010 remporté par Karl Allard. Puis, avec un nouveau protégé en 2013, la chimie n’a pas tarder à se faire et il a guidé son nouveau «poulain» a une deuxième place au classement.

Parmi les autres pilotes québécois sur place pour recevoir leur quote-part du fonds de points, on remarquait Claude Leclerc de Lachenaie, septième au cumulatif à l’âge de 71 ans. Celui que l’on surnomme avec raison « l’homme de fer» participera à son 500e départ dans l’ACT en 2014.

Finalement, il a vu la malchance le quitter en 2013 et à sa troisième saison dans l’ACT-Québec, il a terminé au sixième échelon à 14 points de la cinquième. Pour Étienne Cliche de Vallée-Jonction, il s’agit de son meilleur classement et avec neuf présences parmi le top dix, il a prouvé qu’il avait sa place dans ce championnat très compétitif.

Quelle saison a connu Jonathan Bouvrette de Blainville qui a pris la quatrième place. Avant 2013, il n’avait que deux résultats parmi les cinq premiers, mais il en a ajouté six à son palmarès dont sa première victoire lors du St-Eustache 200, la dernière manche du calendrier. Il sera certainement à surveiller lors de la saison 2014.

Changement

Une modification a été apportée au calendrier 2014 de la série ACT-Québec. Le Montmagny 250 qui devait être présenté le 30 août prochain, a été remis au lendemain, le 31 août.

Sur le plan de l’ACT-US, Wayne Helliwell Jr a coiffé le titre pour une deuxième année consécutive, Bobby Therrien a été proclamé la recrue tandis que Joe Polewarczyk a été nommé chef d’équipe par excellence pour avoir guidé son fils en deuxième place avec une fiche de quatre victoires dont l’International 500.

NASCAR Simplifies Manufacturer Points System For 2014

New Structure Intensifies Rivalries Between Auto Makers   

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 8, 2014) – NASCAR announced today that it has restructured its manufacturer points system for 2014, simplifying it for fans, competition and the industry, while amplifying the already passionate rivalries between each auto maker.

 

The new points system – which applies to all three national series – mirrors the owner championship points structure. Points will be awarded to the single highest finisher for each car manufacturer in each championship event according to the finishing position awarded for each race. Specifically, in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, points will be awarded as follows (43-1, plus bonus points). Points will be awarded in a similar manner in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (43-4, plus bonus points) and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (43-8, plus bonus points).

 

Three additional bonus points will be awarded to the manufacturer that wins the race. The single highest finisher for each manufacturer will receive one additional bonus point for leading a lap, and one additional bonus point for leading the most laps.

 

Example: In a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, if a Toyota finishes in each of the top three positions and the winning Toyota leads the most laps, and a Chevrolet finishes in fourth position without leading a lap, Toyota will receive 48 points and Chevrolet will receive 40 points.

 

"We have always focused on intensifying the natural rivalries between our manufacturers – both on the race track and in the showroom," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition and racing development. "We believe aligning the points system with the owner points will create better understanding for the entire industry, and bolster interest and excitement with our fan base, which has shown intense manufacturer loyalty throughout the sport's history."

 

At the end of the season, if two or more manufacturers have the same number of points, the manufacturers' championship will be awarded to the manufacturer with the greatest number of first-place finishes. If there is a tie in victories, the greatest number of second-place finishes, third-place finishes, etc. will break the tie. If a tie still remains, the manufacturer having the earliest win of the current season will prevail.

 

The 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season gets underway with The Sprint Unlimited on Saturday, Feb. 15 and the 56th annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 23, both at Daytona International Speedway. The Sprint Unlimited will air live at 8 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1, Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. NASCAR Names Richard Buck NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Managing Director

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 9, 2014) – NASCAR has named Richard Buck, a NASCAR executive with a wealth of diverse experience in motorsports, as NASCAR Sprint Cup Series managing director. Buck will serve in the role held the past 12 years by John Darby, who will remain at NASCAR as managing director, competition. Buck and NASCAR's two other national series managing directors – Wayne Auton (NASCAR Nationwide Series) and Chad Little (NASCAR Camping World Truck Series) – now will report directly to Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president, competition and racing development.

 

Buck currently serves as vice president, racing operations for the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), a role he will maintain through the 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona (Jan. 25-26), at which time he will assume his new position. In addition to his role with IMSA, Buck has been serving as the managing director of NASCAR's Touring Series, the all-important grassroots racing program that has developed numerous top-flight NASCAR drivers over the years.

 

"Richard Buck has demonstrated a deep and unique knowledge of motorsports, and his versatility and innovative approach to competition should serve the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage extremely well," said Mike Helton, NASCAR president. "His wide range of expertise will be of great benefit to our premier series. NASCAR is in the midst of exciting change in the Competition area, and Buck will be instrumental in providing us with fresh insights and implementing many of the changes in the years ahead."

 

A native of Phoenix, Buck worked from 1980-2000 as a crew chief, team manager and director of operations with open-wheel racing teams. As a crew chief, he is a multiple-time winner of the Indianapolis 500. Prior to joining NASCAR in January 2005, Buck worked with teams in all three NASCAR national series.

 

"I'm eager and ready to pursue this unique opportunity to serve as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series managing director," said Buck. "I appreciate the faith that NASCAR's management team has entrusted in me for this role. As we prepare to launch the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, I'm thrilled to expand my role in the sport of NASCAR, and I look forward to helping the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition team continue to produce the best racing in the world."

 

Buck will maintain his current role as IMSA prepares to hold the 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona during the inaugural TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season. With his pending departure, IMSA will realign its competition structure, with Scot Elkins, IMSA vice president, competition and technical regulations, to work even more closely with NASCAR's top executives in racing, including Steve O'Donnell, executive vice president, racing operations; Gene Stefanyshyn, vice president, innovation and racing development; and Pemberton. They will form a joint NASCAR / IMSA Competition Committee to meet routinely to share ideas, best practices and resources on innovation and development regarding the two different types of racing.

 

Additionally, as Buck has been serving as NASCAR's managing director of its Touring Series, he will relinquish that role and NASCAR will promote Brad Moran to that position. Moran has been serving as the Touring Series director.

 

Darby will retain responsibilities as managing director, competition, helping to transition the NASCAR Competition model as it evolves to incorporate more technology and innovation originating at the NASCAR Research & Development Center. Over the past 12 years, Darby has been an instrumental part of a significant number of enhancements for NASCAR, including the introduction last year of the Gen-6 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car and an innovative laser inspection process.

PASS To Allow Ford McGunegill Crate Engines In Competition With Pro Late Models In 2014

 

CHARLOTTE, NC (January 9) – Pro All Stars Series (PASS) officials announced today that the Ford McGunegill crate engine will be legal for competition in the PASS Pro Late Model division in 2014.  Cars using a 4412 carburetor must weigh 2950 pounds and those using the 350 cfm. 2 barrel holley HP carburetor must weigh 2925 pounds.

"We tested this configuration for the Ford McGunegill crate engine at Southern National in November and we were pleased with the results," said PASS President Tom Mayberry.  "We've had a lot of interest from teams that have the Ford McGunegill crate and we feel that this will only add to the great competition we saw last year out of the PASS Pro Late Models."

The PASS Pro Late Model division utilizes cars similar to the PASS South Super Late Models with a limited tire usage rule and restrictions on engines and shocks.  The division provides an avenue for racers to compete at many of the same tracks that the PASS South Super Late Models compete on and serves as a stepping stone for drivers looking to make the next step in their racing careers.  In 2014, the PASS Pro Late Models will race 13 times in conjunction with the PASS South Super Late Model division.
