For the second time in 3 weeks – Saturday, June 22nd – the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. and Gen-3 Electrical – brought its special brand of open-wheeled excitement to Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.
With 25 laps to settle the score, Craig Scott and Randy Hollingsworth brought the field of an even dozen to green flag. Hollingsworth drifted high in the first corner as the pack set-off to put the first lap in the record books. That allowed Scott to break away with the lead, as Bob Franks followed close behind. The local racing veteran had been doing some homework during the track's Thursday night practice session and it paid-off as his #72 ride took the lead with 5 laps on the scoreboard.
With Franks in control, Dwight Brown was using the outside line of the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road and looking for a shot at stealing away the lead when the yellow flag flew on lap 12, for incident in the 2nd turn. Brown resumed his pursuit of the leader on the restart and the tightened field brought Chad Strawn into the fight as well. Another caution came out on lap 20 – this time for an issue in the 3rd turn – creating a 5 lap trophy dash for the win.
Dwight Brown's tenacious effort came to fruition as he got the lead on the restart but instead of wondering if he could pass Franks, he was now wondering if a hard-charging Chad Strawn would pass him. He'd manage to hold-off Strawn for the win, with John Baker Jr., Franks and Alex Lees completing the top 5. Brad Stevenson, Rick Warnes, Rob Warnes, Scott, Willow Barberstock, Hollingsworth and Alex Cuzzilla rounded-out the finishing order.
Ontario Modifieds Racing Series notebook: After finishing 2nd in the night's 4th heat race, it looked like youngster Alex Cuzzilla could be on the way to his best career OMRS finish. The driver of the #50 machine wound-up parked on the infield pit lane, 5 laps down to the race winner…The tour is back in action Saturday, June 29th with the first of this year's 2 stops at Flamboro Speedway.
