PASS North: Joey Doiron breaks through at Beech Ridge

Scarborough ME (5/5) Berwick Maine’s Joey Doiron charged to the lead on lap 87 of Saturday’s PASS North Southern Maine Motors.com 150 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway  to earn a convincing victory, the first for the series’ 2010 Rookie of the Year. Lonnie Sommerville raced home in second followed by Derek Ramstrom, Cassius Clark and DJ Shaw. Doiron came from tenth on the grid and drove under Sommerville and race leader Shaw for a lead he would never relinquish.

 

Doiron’s best previous PASS North finish - a fourth - came in this event one year ago.

Doiron considers Beech Ridge his home track, and his victory comes after two seasons of trying to carry the PASS feature checkers.  Despite his Rookie of the Year title in 2010, Doiron has suffered through more than his share of mechanical issues and on track incidents.The family– focused race teams’ perseverance paid off Saturday as the young man drove off to the most convincing win that PASS fans have witnessed in recent memory.

The season opener proved to be a day for the young guns to shine. Aaron Ricker, Shaw and Sommerville shared the lead over the first two thirds of the race and 2011 Co-Rookie of the Year Kyle DeSouza, Ramstrom, and Brad Babb spent most of the day contending for the top spot.  Cassius Clark (4th) and Gary Smith (8th) both came from the back of the 32 car field and they were the only two in the top ten that have more than a few years experience on the tour’s tracks.

2011 race winner and defending series champion Johnny Clark had a race he’d rather forget, as did Ben and Mike Rowe. Clark qualified through the consolation rounds and started nineteenth. Clark picked up eight spots by lap 21 but he was sliding back 20 laps later and it was clear that there were problems with the 54. A trip to the pits under caution for a fix seemed to do the trick and he was back in the top five by lap 102. But the same driveline problem resurfaced, shutting off Clark’s ride intermittently and sending him sideways on more than one occasion. Only experience and determination allowed him to salvage a 16th place finish. Ben Rowe never seemed to have a handle on the speedway, despite his teams’ best efforts. Rowe had to settle for 22nd at the checkers. Mike Rowe had a race similar to his sons’ and the best the legend could muster was 18th.

The top eight all completed 150 green flag laps in just over an hour. The race was slowed by six caution periods, and Doiron’s late race dominance led to a 6.942 margin of victory. Fast lap was set by DJ Shaw (15.316/78.271). Qualifying wins went to Ricker, Hubbard and Shaw. Johnny Clark and Donnie Whitten prevailed in the consolation rounds.

The PASS Mod field had its’ strongest opening day showing ever and it was an all Shaw show from green to checker. Andy Shaw sat on the pole with Dale Shaw outside, and the pair swapped the lead on several occasions before the defending race and series champion prevailed. Dale chased Andy to the checkers and Dana Reed raced home third with Mark Lundblad Jr. and Travis Buzzell fourth and fifth. Scott Alexander and Andy Shaw claimed their heat races.

The PASS Sportsman suffered from the dreaded yellow fever early in their 75 lap feature. Five of the seven caution flags flew in the first 30 laps but once the field hit their stride the racing was intense. Carey Martin worked his way by Clyde Hennessey on a lap 28 restart and never gave up the lead, despite Craig Smith’s late race charge. Mike Clark made his trip from Littleton New Hampshire worthwhile with a solid third; Clyde Hennessey and Scott Dorr settled for fourth and fifth. Jarrod Ledger and Nate Leavitt earned the front row starting spots in their qualifiers.

The PASS Super Late Models and Mods are in action Saturday May 12th when the bull ring, Epping New Hampshire’s Star Speedway, hosts the two series. Race Time is 4:30 PM. The PASS Sportsman take a break until Sunday June 3rd when all three PASS North touring divisions visit Riverside Speedway in Groveton New Hampshire.

THE STORY

 

Joey Doiron aims to collect his first career PASS North Series win when the series opens the 2011 season with the PASS 150 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, on Saturday, April 30. Doiron won the 2010 Rookie of the Year award in the series, a march he started with a career-best finish of fourth in this very race. Doiron started his racing career at Beech Ridge and considers it his home track. Doiron is coming off a DNF at “The Race” at North Wilkesboro Motor Speedway earlier this month after a blown tire ended his day prematurely.

JOEY DOIRON, Driver of the No. 73 JBJ Machine/Dale Shaw Race Cars Chevrolet, On his chances at Beech Ridge this weekend: “It's Beech Ridge, so I'm always gald to go there. Every time we've been there with PASS, we feel like we've been a winning car through practice and even for most of the race. Something always seems to happen to us.

 

“Hopefully, the luck has to turn around after (The Race at North Wilkesboro). To turn it around with a win would be awesome, or even a Top-5 finish. I'd be more than happy to start the season the way I did last year.”

 

On the racing at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway: “You just can't abuse your stuff too early. I really think the key the last couple of years has been whoever can ride around and stay out of trouble and then be able to paint the (inside) line in the last 50 laps of the race. It doesn't matter if you're a half-second faster than everybody else, if you can't pass on the bottom at the end when everybody starts sliding up to the top of the track, you're not going to be very good.

 

“The track is its own animal. A lot of people consider it like Oxford, but I always think we have a chance to win at Beech Ridge, and at Oxford, usually I can't get out of my own way. So I don't know what it is there.”

 

On his goals for his sophomore season: “I definitely think we can win a race this year. We just need some luck. We put ourselves in position to do it a couple of times last year it seemed, but we just couldn't seem to catch a break when we needed it.

 

“If we can get a win, we can build on that. Hopefully, then we'll pick up another one after that. I think if we can run competitively at the tracks where we think we can, the points will take care of themselves.”

The PASS North Series heads to the second race of the season on the smallest track, the PASS 150 at the quarter-mile Star Speedway in Epping, N.H., on Saturday, May 14... Joey Doiron has never competed in a Super Late Model at Star Speedway, but he post a Top-10 finish with a 9th-place run at the high-banked quarter-mile of White Mountain Motorsports Park last season.

PR: Joey Doiron Ready For 'The Race' At North Wilkesboro Speedway

Reigning PASS Rookie of the Year Ready To Shine In 'The Race'

 

BERWICK, Maine – Joey Doiron figures he was probably only four years old the last time the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competed at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway, but he sensed the history as soon as he visited the venerable racing grounds on a recent trip.

 

 

“I think I used to watch the races then, but I honestly don't remember if I ever saw North Wilkesboro or not,” Doiron said this week. “It's a really cool place, though. It's like stepping back in time when you get there. It was kept up pretty well for no one really touching it in 15 years or so.”

 

Doiron will join dozens of other Super Late Model drivers at North Wilkesboro on April 8-9. And it's not just to see how history has treated the place either, as they will compete in the PASS-sanctioned “The Race” – a $75,000-to-win 300-lap main event on Saturday night.

 

No points, no worries. Just a large potential payday and a chance to get the 2011 season started a few weeks early on a very big stage.

 

“The money is probably a big part of what makes this special, but it's more than that,” Doiron said. “Not many people can say they've ever raced at North Wilkesboro, and being able to say you raced there is a big deal.

 

“The other thing is that there are not many slouches entered in this race. Everyone that's coming could probaly win it. I don't think you'll see another Super Late Model field this tough all year until maybe the Snowball Derby (in the winter).”

 

Doiron is guaranteed a starting spot in the main event after finishing ninth in the overall PASS North Series standings in 2010. His Rookie of the Year-winning campaign included four Top-10 finishes and one Top-5 in 12 starts. Fast-forward to the start of this season, and Doiron believes his team is capable of contending at North Wilkesboro Speedway – and surprising a few people in the process.

 

His No. 73 JBJ Machine/Rescue Welding/Dale Shaw Race Cars Chevrolet tested at the track earlier this month. The .625-mile facility has been largely dormant since four-time series champion Jeff Gordon won the final Sprint Cup race held there in 1996.

 

“It went a lot better than I expected,” Doiron said of the test. “We went with a setup we've never really used before up here (in the PASS North Series). I think we found something – and I'm really excited to go back. We were one of faster cars there during the test, too. Something like that always give you confidence.

 

“I'm excited to start the PASS North Series year, too, just because I feel like we've gotten better.”

 

Doiron, whose father serves as the crew chief for the family-operated team, said he actually believes his Super Late Model career starting making gains late in 2010.

 

“At this time last year, I didn't think our program was good enough,” he said. “But I think we turned a corner at the end of the season. We didn't have the finishes at the end of the year maybe that we wanted, but we were definitely a Top-5 caliber car at some of the tracks we were going to for a second time.”

 

With that confidence of finishing off last season on a strong note, and now heading to North Wilkesboro on the heels of a good test for the team, Doiron is excited about the possibilities.

 

“Everyone goes to the race track with the expectation of winning,” he said. “I think it's possible for us. It doesn't matter who it is, Augie Grill or Bill Penfold, or how good your car is – you've still got to have luck on your side. You need a lot of luck, too, especially in a race like this. Anything can happen.”
