ACT Tour - 2009-05-10 - Airborne

Brad Leighton (55nh) took the lead on lap 1 from Randy Potter (02nh). Here, having swapped front row positions, they are leading the Spring Green 100 field behind the pace car after the lap 25 caution.

On Sunday, Scott Payea of Vermont became the third different race winner in as many races on the ACT 2009 campaign when he won the Spring Green 100 ACT race at Airborne International Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY. Payea who started seventh on the grid, only lead a handful of laps to capture this win and take home the characteristic Furniture World of Vermont recliner. The race was rescheduled from Saturday when it was postponed due to rain.

Brad Leighton who started on the outside of row one, jumped in the lead and fended off numerous attacks by fellow New Hampshire driver Randy Potter for the lead. Potter who started on the pole finished second after taking the lead briefly at around the 80 laps mark. Leighton would have to settle for third despite having one of fastest cars on the track.

Randy Potter (02nh) puts a bumper under race leader Brad Leighton (55nh) as they negotiate Airborne' redesigned turns 3 and 4.

Potter (02nh) and Scott Payea (89) capitalize on Brad Leighton's (55nh) push off of turn two, overtaking him for the lead using the low lane and down the backstretch.

Payea (89) using the same tactict on Potter to take the lead off turn two.

“I had a very good car. I was easy on the tires and let Brad and Randy battle it out and sat back. At one point I said to myself I should drop back at least a car length as they got to bang on each other pretty hard racing for the lead. Once Potter got under him I followed him below and knew I had enough to challenge for the lead. Obviously I could have done without the restart with two to go. But I knew I had saved enough. Obviously this win feels good and we are off to Oxford were we usually run good.” declared a jubilant Scott Payea.

Donald Theetge (80) showed some good speed both in his heat race that he won from the pole and during the race.

Brent Dragon (55) sits it out during a rain delay. Dragon had another great weekend and finished fifth.

Finishing fourth after starting twelve was Charlesbourg, Quebec driver Donald Theetge and fifth was Vermont’s Brent Dragon. “I had a great car but I needed a twenty lap run. With about twenty to go I lost 3 or 4 positions after I got hit pretty hard. This fifth place finish is a lot better than we did last year and we go home with the car in one piece two weekends in a row with good results. The track is a lot of fun. I was hooking up very good on the high side but I was at a disadvantage at first as the modified laid down some serious rubber on the low side. But it certainly came in for me.” said Dragon.

Last week's winner Eric Williams (7vt) goes around, is collected by Brian Hoar (#37) who in turn got to see the underside of Joey Polewarczky's (97) car. Pole was having a great run to the front before this incident that damaged the front end's geometry.

Tyler Cahoon (38vt) must be very thankful that track management installed large tires against the turn four wall to act as soft walls, as he collected them and the wall very hard in the incident.

The race went under caution 8 times and a brief red flag when safety workers had to deal with Eric Chase’s automobile who was caught in mud on the backstretch after going off course. Chase was unhurt and drove his car back to the pits.

Three different drivers : Leighton, Potter and Payea lead the race. “I loved Airborne. I love this new design even more. Despite a tight car I was able to race Brad a bunch. We started the car tight as it normally frees up. It never did. The track’s 60 feet wasn’t enough to get it done sooner in the race so I could save the tires” said Potter.

Claude Leclerc (11) briefly lead his qualifying heat race.

Martin Lacombe (03) visit the pits for some important adjustments to the handling of his car.

Claude Leclerc of Repentigny, Quebec finished 18th and dealt with a loose race car. The veteran driver declared this: “I just could not get on the gas. The car was loose off and I had to feather it. The car is in one piece and I look forward to racing again next weekend at Autodrome St-Eustache.”

The other Quebec driver in the race: Martin Lacombe of Terrebonne, Quebec started very deep in the field in 29th and finished 28th. “We broke the transmission in practice so we only got 10 laps of practice. After going down a lap in the early going we came in the pits and made adjustments and improved the car. This was a shakedown for next weekend’s race for us. We go home with the car in one piece, so its mission accomplished” said Lacombe.

Several drivers did not stay for Sunday’s race after the show was postponed Saturday as the weather forecast was calling for 100% rain. Among them were several Quebec drivers: ACT Castrol 2008 Champion Alexandre Gingras, the 2007 ACT Castrol Champion and 2008 ACT Tour Champion Patrick Laperle, the 2006 ACT Castrol Champion Sylvain Lacombe, Kevin Roberge and ACT Castrol rookie David Michaud. 42 cars lined the pits on Saturday.

ACT Tour - 2009-05-05 - Merchants Bank 150

Je me suis donc retrouvé vite derrière.

Olsen (#32), Pembroke (#44), Payea (#89), Williams (#7), Dragon (#55), Hoar (#37)

Finale

ACT Tour - 2009-04-19

RPM Motorsport drivers Brian Hoar (#37) and Mike Olsen (#32) captured the front row each scoring +7 handicaps in their respective heat races.

On April 19th, the traditional ACT Tour season opener, the NH Governer’s cup race, was held at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH. Forty five cars in the pits attempted to qualify for one of the thirty starting spots.

The field was set using 4 qualifying heat races with the top four locked-in, two consolation rounds and a promoter’s provisional.

Vague 1

Heat 1
The first heat was won by Jeff Zuidema who had started third. Behind him were John Donahue (started 4th), Pete Potvin (started 1st), AJ Begin (started 5th). Others were sent to the consi: Ben Lynch, Glen Luce, Corey Morgan and Chris Michaud.

Heat 2
Quinten Welch led flag to flag. Scott Payea finished second (started 6th), Eric Chase who pressured Welch most of the heat finished third (started 2nd). Mike Olsen finished fourth (started 11th) after starting at the rear of the heat for an impressive +7 handicap. Others going to the consi where: The race was slowed once when White who started third spun on lap 2 in turn 3.

Heat 3
Larry Gelinas led flag to flag. Eddie MacDonald finished second (started 4th), Brian Hoar was third (started 10th) and Jeremy Harclerode (started 2nd). Others going to the consi where: Bobby Dragon, Fred Astle Jr, Chip Grenier, Joey Doiron, Mark Hayward, Mike Johnson, Matt Anderson. In this heat on lap 7 Johnson also spun drawing the only caution.

Heat 4
Tyler Cahoon finished first after taking the lead away from Randy Potter on the first lap. The race ran caution free. Ricky Rolfe Jr finished second (started 4th), Potter third (pole sitter), Joey Polewarczyk Jr was the last qualifier (started: 6th). Others going to the consi were: Jamie Fisher, Brad Leighton, Brent Dragon, Wayne Helliwell Jr, JR Baril, Miles Chipman and Rowland Robinson Jr.

Consolation 1

Consi #1
Bryan Kruczek took the commands of the race from Ben Lynch (pole sitter) on the first lap to win the consi despite two restarts. The first caution came on lap 7 when Donald Theetge got on the inside of Glen Luce going into turn 3 and made contact sending Luce in a spin and drawing the caution flag. “What is wrong with Theetge? There was no way he could have made the turn without making contact. We were already two wide and he had to be on the grass to be that low. Why did they put him back up on the restarted?” said a very upset Luce after the race. Before they wrecked Luce was in third place fending off attacks by Ricky Wolf, he later finished 10th.

The second caution came on the first lap after the restart, when Ben Lynch who was in second place was under attack from Theetge (third) in a two wide battle, the fourth place car of Ricky Rolfe got on the gas much faster than Lynch did and bumped him into a spin drawing the second and last caution. The bumping and grinding wasn’t over as it was going to be a Green-two-to-go-white-checker finish.

On the two-to-go lap as Kruczek negotiated turns 1 and 2 was bumped by Theetge lifting his rear off the ground. Kruczek’s setup was solid enough to recover and go on to win but it still resulted in some “international” discussions between Theetge and Kruczek on the cool down lap and during post race tech. “He thinks he can rough us up and we won’t say a thing?” declared the young Bryan Kruczek after things cooled down. During the white flag lap as the cars of Ricky Rolfe and Corey Morgan battled for fourth place went into turn 1 made contact sending Rolfe in the outside wall. Despite what could have been disastrous, the race still finished under green flag conditions.
The order of finish was: Kruczek, Theetge, Anzalone Jr, Morgan, Shawn Martin, Chris Michaud, Karl Allard, Glenn Martel, Travis Stearns, Glenn Luce, James Lindardy, Ben Lynch, Joey Laquerre, Matt White and Ricky Wolf. Top 4 transfer to the main event, while others are going to the B feature.

Consolation 2

Semi finale

Finale

Consi #2
Jamie Fisher took advantage of his pole position to lead the first 10 laps. Brad Leighton, who started fourth, drove around Fisher for the win in a caution free 12 laps race.

Fisher finished second, Bobby Dragon third, Brent Dragon fourth the last transfer spot. Wayne Helliwell Jr fifth, JR Baril, Mike Johnson, Miles Chipman, Joey Doiron, Chip Grenier, Rowland Robinson Jr and Matt Anderson rounded out the field.

B Feature.
The race was won by Wayne Helliwell Jr. It was slowed only once when Travis Stearns spun in turns 3 and 4. Also involved were Joey Laquerre and Rowland Robinson.

After the restart Helliwell jumped into the lead and never looked back. As the top four and transferring to the main event were: Helliwell, Fred Astle Jr, JR Baril and Chris Michaud. Others were left packing: Johnson, Martin, Glenn Martel, Miles Chipman, Ben Lynch, Karl Allard, Jeoy Doiron, Rickey Wolf, James Linardy, Travis Sterns, Chip Grenier, Rowland Robinson Jr, Joey Laquerre, Mark Hayward et Matt Anderson.

Feature race
RPM Motorsport drivers Brian Hoar and Mike Olsen started on the front row as a result of their +7 handicap in the qualifying races.

During the first part of the race they seemed en route to a win and proved to everyone that RPM will still be a contender this year even without multi-time Champion Jean-Paul Cyr behind the wheel. Cyr opting to run local at Thunder Road and racing baja bike events.

Joey Polewarczky Jr. and Scott Payea offered fans some very exciting racing, during one stretch of their 40 laps battle, they raced side-by-side for 15 consecutive laps. Finishing second and third in the race, they both have their sights on the Tour’s Championship.

The battle between eventual winner Leighton and the young Pole was also very stimulating and fun to watch. “I started it. When I first got under him [Polewarczky] in turn 3, I backed off to let him regroup and keep his number one spot. After I finally got around him clean, in the following lap he retaliated by bumping me out of the position. He didn’t let me take it back like I did. That’s when I took the gloves off and fought back. We ground again each other over several laps. I had a better car at that point so I knew I could be patient. He had fought with Hoar, Olsen and Payea to get to the front. I had better tires” commented Leighton about the paint swapping exercise he and young Pole had during the race.Camping world regular Brad Leighton, who started 18th, patiently worked his way to the front picking the spots one by one. “I didn’t have to fight for positions, I was patient. So patient, contrary to my usual driving style, I even surprised myself and probably even aged a full year having to hold back” declared Leighton after the race.

By winning the Invitational Qualifier race Leighton will most likely get his invitation to race in the NHMS ACT Invitational 50 on September 19th. Leighton who ranks second in New Hampshire Motor Speedway wins, tied at 8, has the experience on the larger track.

Only Charlesbourg driver and 2006 ACT CASTROL Champion Donald Theetge made the feature race. He started 20th and finished 18th one lap down to the leaders. Theetge wheeling his brand new Race Basics chassis was expected to have a better finish in the race.

Meanwhile, fellow Canadian driver Karl Allard did not make the field as he battled an ill handling race car all day. “The car wasn’t good. It was pushy-loose and we couldn’t get it to handle where it was comfortable or fast” declared Allard as he watched the feature race from the stands.

The ACT Tour resumes competition on May 3rd for the Vermont Governer’s cup at Thunder Road Speedway in Barre, VT.

PATRICK LAPERLE returns to ACT CASTROL in 2009

During a phone conversation with Patrick Laperle today, he confirmed he will be competing for the ACT Castrol Championship in 2009.

Laperle, the 2008 ACT Tour Champion and the 2007 ACT Castrol Champion, will race the Quebec base championship and select USA events.

His goal is to win a second ACT Championship, participate in the New Hampshire Motor Speedway Invitational and spend time with his young family.

"Last year on the ACT Tour we had to do alot of travel and it was very demanding on the whole team. Lots of tracks were far from home. This year we want to be with our young famillies and still be involved in the sport we love" said Laperle.

Theetge heads to RACE BASIC on Monday

Boischatel, QC driver Donald Theetge and the #80 team will be rolling on Monday morning to the Race Basic shops for a last check before the Goodyear tire tests at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Theetge the 2006 ACT Castrol Champion was selected by ACT President Tom M. Curley along with Vermont Senator Phil Scott to participate in a test session at the very fast 1 mile oval.

Theetge who took possession of a brand new Race Basic race car over the winter will be looking to collect important data not only for Goodyear but for Race Basic car builder as well. A large proportion of ACT competitors are fielding this "frame". Much the same can be said about Phil Scott who hails a Dale Shaw race car.

ACT will be racing for the first time at the Loudon, NH racetrack on September 19th. In a controversial interview over at courant.com, NHMS winningest driver Ted Christopher made a couple controversial statements about the ACT Invitational.

"They run a stock brake caliper. You can't run a stock brake calliper at New Hampshire. That place requires tremendous brakes I don't care how fast you're going. There's a few things there. The cars will be safe, but they run a single piston stock GM calliper brake. That ain't going to work up there. There's certain things about running cars there. You start racing that racetrack, who knows, maybe the brakes will last but they'll be junk at the end. Who knows, they haven't even tested there yet."

There is merit to Christopher's comment. What needs to be adapted to these ultra light and fast short track designed ACT cars for them to be safe and functional on the long track?

When the announcement of the race first came about, successful crew chief Eric Laperle commented to me about the teams that run all the light weight bling bling would have to think about going to stronger and heavier steel components.

As an example, over the last two years when the Tour travelled to Kawartha Speedway, in non scientific observations, it seemed a larger than normal quantity of wheels failed. The wheels would crack around the welds at the beeds. This would result in slow leaks and teams searching endlessly for the loss in on track performance.

What I suspect is the higher speeds and forces of the banks, much stronger than at any of the other facilities visited, was the cause of the failures. What will it be like at NHMS? A lot of the teams may have to swap out their "light weight" wheels for stronger ones is probably a safe bet. But what else is there?

As if the technical issues the teams will face wasn't enough Christopher took a jab at Curley: "I've talked to some people that have run their series and they've told me it's like [ACT president] Tom Curley picks who he wants to win," said Christopher, the 2008 Whelen Modified Tour champion. "I'm not interested in racing something like that. I know people that have run with Curley. I haven't personally myself, but he runs a different ship I guess. Well, he runs the ship from what I hear, he's the captain."

One thing is for sure, you can't be indifferent to TC's no-bullshit comments. Because of his driving abilities and driving style, I would love seeing him in the Oxford 250 qualifiers. Can you say excitement?

I visited the Salon national auto-sport motorisé car show in St-Hyacinthe, QC.

It used to be the travel destination for anything that was motorsports. Unfortunately, it has not been the case as the participation of stock cars is very limited.

Find enclosed some pictures from the show, race cars and racing personalities present and talking thei way thru the off season.

I had the pleasure of attending the 40th Quebec auto sport car show on April 3rd. Lots of great muscle cars, tuner imports and of course great looking stock cars.

Our friends of the Super Sportsman class and their president Andre Poulin was the largest group. Nine cars if I counted well.

Patrick Verner and five vintage cars were also present. Mr Verner was excited to share his schedule and the fact they will be the main event at Autodrome Montmagny in July.

Carl Labonté was there with two beautiful Speed STR versatile racecars.

Our Pro Truck friends were also on site with two beautiful trucks... Speaking of Pro Trucks, can someone tell me what series Champion Jimmy Cormier has in his ears ?

Track officials from Montmangy, Chaudière and Riverside were also present. Montmagny had a dirt sprint car onsite.

Tom Curley visited the two ACT representatives Alexandre Gingras and Jonathan Desbiens.

Everyone was talking racing. All were excited about taking to the track soon.

Tony Stewart comes to Thunder Road

TONY STEWART COMES TO THUNDER ROAD IN ’09 STEWART TO RACE IN VERMONT GOVERNOR’S CUP 150

For Immediate Release - ACT – 032909-12A

Barre, VT – Two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Tony Stewart will race in the CARQUEST Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 lap race Thursday, June 25 as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration at Barre’s Thunder Road International Speedbowl.

The 2002 and 2005 Cup winner with 32 major NASCAR victories to his credit is considered the most versatile race driver since Mario Andretti in the 1970s. In 1995 Stewart gained national attention when he swept all three of the United States Auto Club’s major open cockpit divisions, capturing the Midget, Sprint, and Silver Crown Series. He was the first driver to ever do so. He was the 1997 Indianapolis Racing League Champion and is remembered as the rookie who sat on the Indianapolis 500 pole and led for 144 laps before his car went away.

The Rushville, Indiana racer, considered the most aggressive driver in American motorsports today told Thunder Road track officials ‘The Road’ has special significance. “Thunder Road has been on my list of short tracks that I just have to race”, he said. “My friend Kenny Schrader tells me the competition is tough. This is a race I’m looking forward to,” said the twice Daytona 400 winner.

Thunder Road promoter and co-owner Tom Curley said, “Of all the people, in any form of racing, the one driver I wanted to have help us celebrate the track’s 50th anniversary is Tony Stewart. I have always thought he represents what stock car racing is really all about”, said Curley. “He definitely will be coming to race and that’s what Thunder Road fans and competitors expect”.

The CARQUEST Governor’s Cup will draw a top field from the American-Canadian Tour. Earlier this year ACT announced that the Governor’s Cup would be designated as a Qualifier for the Saturday, September 19th ACT INVITATIONAL at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. It will be part of the Sprint Cup weekend, which will culminate with the Sylvania 300 on Sunday, September 20th. If Stewart wins the Barre race and elects to compete, New Hampshire Motor Speedway will increase the starting line-up for the INVITATIONAL.

A special commemorative 50th Anniversary Governor’s Cup Tony Stewart discounted ticket will be available beginning with Thunder Road’s Mekkelsen Memorial Day Classic double header over the May 23/24 weekend when the American-Canadian Tour will be joined by the True Value Modified Racing Series on Memorial Day weekend.

Ticket prices for the Governor’s Cup will be $17.00 for Adult advance tickets, with race day Adult tickets $20, and Children’s ticket (6-12) $3.00. Pits will open at 2pm, front gate at 3pm, with post time 6pm and the Governor’s Cup scheduled for 8pm.

2 minutes avec/with Tom Curley

New Hampsire Motor Speedway Invitational 150

Cela me rappelle l'ancien temps.

In order to clear up some topics being written about in blogs and discussed in forums, I asked M. Tom Curley, ACT President, to clarify his position on them:

New Hampshire Motor Speedway Invitational 150
(A by-invitation only ACT race is being held at NHMS on the Friday of the Sprint Cup event on September, 19th.)

ORB – Tom, I remember a couple years ago at Capital City Speedway (CCS), while we waited for an injured racer to be airlifted, you mentioned one of the best “promotion” for NASCAR North was going to Dover. It appears the NHMS adventure is already reaping some benefits... having Derek Lynch run for the championship at CCS, the rumoured come back of Munroe at CCS is also great for the area. I am sure the same buzz is also going on in Maine. What’s in TMC’s crystal ball?

TMC - No question that back in the 80's the original NASCAR NORTH, which we created, going to Dover was a huge step toward visibility of the series and credibility of it's racers. I believe this promotion at NHMS will have similar results for the Late Model division throughout the US and Canada.

One of the added benefits is that local tracks, like Capital City and others will benefit from this event being part of our overall system.

I will be in a better position to comment on what is in the future after this season...if all goes as I hope it will...I would think the 'sky is the limit' to what what we can accomplish with Late Model racing over the next few years.

ORB – Have you given any thoughts about a schedule change to accommodate Castrol drivers that would qualify and get the invitation for NHMS because it falls the same weekend the 300 is held at St-Eustache? If it rains, will it be made up the next day?

TMC - The only date that NASCAR would agree to over the weekend was Saturday at 5:30. I realize this is not ideal for our Castrol competitors, but I believe the quality of the drivers we take to Loudon will allow for a trip up I-89 after the event...some preparation work on Sunday morning and hopefully everything will work fine.

It reminds me of the way things used to be. I remember racing in the early 80's in Mont Laurier, PQ in the Laurentides region on a Saturday and then having to be at Oxford Plains Speedway for an event on Sunday afternoon. Everyone made it to Maine.

The most difficult part of this for our Quebec teams and ACT officials is that we won't be able to celebrate after the event at Loudon...I guess if not too tired we will have to wait until Sunday evening in Ste Eustache.

The event will not be rain dated but our arrangement is that all teams will get some appearance money if that happens.

ORB – For the tire test at NHMS, I think you chose well the drivers. Both will have quality technical chassis support (Race Basics and Shaw racecars). The two drivers’ chassis represent more than half the cars in ACT.

How will the test results get shared? I am not familiar with that procedure... will only Goodyear get the data from the two cars and then “report” recommended/minimum air pressures back to ACT?

TMC - Part of why I picked Donald T. and Phil S. was that I can get honest information and input from them. They will also be willing to share information to other teams on both sides of the border which will help them prepare for the August test and tune sessions. Goodyear will supply ACT with all the tire information and that will be sent to all qualified teams from the ACT office.

ORB - Under your “criterias” would someone like Mario Gosselin who did not race the Tour or the CASTROL Series 100% qualify? Or is he one of the invaders you don’t want to entertain? If he is, how would you deal with a Ben Rowe/Mike Rowe or even a Ryan Nolin who is rumoured to only do a few shows this year? Wouldn’t that leave you with a light field? I saw in one of the releases “provisionals”... but where would they come from, unless you would lift the criteria?

TMC - Certainly someone like Mario Gosselin who may only run a handful of events would qualify. You have to remember that I designed this event with the idea that for this year we will try and put the very best field of 36 Late Models together that we can. If it is successful, it should open the door for many more years of racing at NHMS and give lots of teams the opportunity. This is serious business for a lot of reasons---- safety being the # 1 concern; reputation of Late Model racing; having experienced racers that understand this is more than just another race...it is a major business decision we have made on the part of Late Model racing. The last thing we need is a lot of inexperienced racers going 140 MPH who have no experience and will make this race something like the 'massacre at Ste Croix' a few years ago!

We have a very clear provision on the Loudon event that all drivers MUST BE APPROVED....even though someone wins a qualifier, they will not necessarily be approved until after the August test and tune date. If someone who has run only on a quarter mile like Thunder Road and goes to NHMS to test and continually drives over his head and keeps spinning around bringing out yellows should not be at the Invitational in Sept and probably will not be ''approved''.

In another case someone who is a couple seconds slower per lap than the 10th place racer at the test and tune probably should not be approved even though he may have won the track title at Thunder Road or Seekonk which are 70 MPH 1/4 mile race tracks.

Bottom line, we are going to be smart about this event which is why it was designed as an Invitational instead of a point counting tour race.

Introduction of a FORD crate engine
(ACT issued a press release during this year’s Speedweeks that Ford, Dave Dion, McMaster and ACT had been working on a Ford crate engine to be introduced for the 2009 racing season)

ORB - At Smyrna some guys commented that the engine first sent to McMaster for testing was too powerful. Now, over at Green-white-checker Travis Barrett comments about the engine “not being race ready”. What’s the update I can run with? Are you still on track to have the engine ready by April 19th?

TMC - MacMaster has fixed the FORD and it is being put into Cris Michaud's car this week with 2.) a scheduled closed private test date for April 6 or April 8.

It has been a long process because everything is different than the Chevrolet...different oiling system, different headers, different motor mounts, different cam had to be designed to help bring the horsepower in line with the GM,s etc. But we have stuck with it and it is about ready for a private closed test.]

If all goes well with the durability field test (racing at an actual track versus the dyno which has been very successful) we will then have 3.) a second test the week of the April 12th with an invited GM team to test 'heads up' with the Ford to test compatibility with the GM. If that goes well, we will have 4.) the FORD tested at a scheduled practice session at Thunder Road April 15th, with all the other TR Late Models in a final durability and compatibility test. 5.) We will then allow it to run in the Lee opener. 6.)If that goes well, we would then option the FORD into the ACT rule book for this year for those that might like to run a FORD.

The short answer is that we got behind in this project but have worked hard to catch up, and I am happy with our current testing plan and hope all works out well. FORD is optimistic. They have already sent us another motor in anticipation of a successful test period and eventual approval into the ACT rule book.

Stub Fadden’s passing
(On March 11th, Stanley “Stub” Fadden passed away at the age of 75. He started racing in 1961, captured 230 victories and he made his last start in 1998 at the age of 65. He won Championships at Thunder Road, Catamount, Mont-Laurier (Quebec), a Tripple Crown winner at Cayuga (Ontario) and a two-time Milk Bowl winner.)

ORB - Stub Fadden left us for the other track. What is the single most important memory he leaves with you?

TMC - Stub raced with us from the beginning of Thunder Road in the early 60's until the end of the first year of ACT in 1986. There are a million Stub Fadden stories, but the one that I will always remember was this:

We were having a large rules and procedure meeting with all the tour teams back in the early 80's. The subject of starting the best drivers out back under the handicap system we were using (in fact, very similar to the handicap we use in Quebec now and every Thursday night at Thunder Road. I would use it on the ACT US TOUR if we didn't have such large car counts and use the local racers in out US tour events as well if I could)---anyway, most of the guys were bellyaching about how we should start the best cars up front and avoid all the wrecks etc.

After a while, Stubby, who rarely ever said anything about rules or procedures, simply stood up and said " I don't know why everyone is complaining about the handicap, I'm kinda proud to be starting out back...it much mean I am having a pretty good year". The room went silent and the topic was never brought up by that group again for years. I think it speaks to just how much respect the peers of Stub Fadden had for him. He was one of the most respected men I have ever known in racing.

50th Thunder Road season

ORB - can you share some of the wares you are planning to celebrate with?

TMC - Thunder Road is set to have an incredible season to celebrate it's 50th anniversary. Two different events will have NASCAR Cup stars racing, we have a night where at the end of the night we will have $5000 of fireworks shot off in 50 seconds; we have many 50th promotions nearly every night at TR; there is a 5000 to win Enduro scheduled; we will be having some renovations done in May; there will be a memorial park designed to honour all the champions; all in all we will have fans talking about the 50th year at Thunder Road for a long time I hope.

The year after

ORB - How do you see 2010? My colleagues have reported on how Dean Gallison will
be the “competition” side of the house. Have you chosen the logistics and marketing tsar?

TMC - At this point I don't see a lot changing for 2010, as long a there are no health issues and everyone on our team remains enthused and committed.

I am constantly working on trying to find the right people to eventually take over the various components that make ACT and Thunder Road the success they are. Hopefully things will come together. This year John Walker will be doing some Race Directing on the Castrol Serie. Hopefully he will enjoy it and that would give me some back up as we go forward.

2009 Winners and Champions

ORB - Who do you see taking home the ACT Tour, Série Castrol and TR Championships?

TMC - Early ACT TOUR favorites have to be Brent Dragon, Randy Potter, Joey Pole, Brian Hoar, Glen Luce

Castrol Series would have to be Donald Theetge, Patrick Laperle, Alexandre Gingras, Karl Allard and I suspect that Martin Lacombe might have a 'breakout' year this year.

Thunder Road: Cris Michaud, David Pembroke, Phil Scott, JP Cyr and I believe Nick Sweet will be a contender.

ORB – Thank you for your time.

TMC - See you in a few weeks at the Lee opener.

Lewis Hamilton RC style

As most of you know, I am an avid motorsport fan, with stock car having a special place over the other forms.

One other form of racing that occupies a number of my evening is radio controlled car racing.

In the following video, check out what a young engineer got to live... a dream for many.

Video: In-car of Laperle's crash

New Smyrna 2009-09 - night #6 [updated]

New Smyrna Speedway, New Smyrna Beach, Floride.

Canadian Patrick Laperle won his third ASA / Crate Late Model stock car feature event and stretches his point lead in the 43rd World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing championship held at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Laperle, from St-Denis, Québec, Canada, started the race from the pole position. Right away second place starter David Wagner jumped ahead of him. But the field was shown the red flag for an incident in turn 3 involving Tanner Barryhill and Matt Cohen. Both are done for the night. A complete restart was performed. As in the previous start, Wagner jumped in the lead, ahead of Laperle, taking advantage of the momentum the outside groove provides.

On lap 3 the field was slowed for the spinning car of James Weller just outside turn 3. As per ASA procedures all restarts were performed single file. This procedure gave enough cushion to Wagner for him to protect the top spot.

“From the start of the race I knew I had enough to compete with David. But I am racing the Championship, so I was ok to settle in behind him. Around the half way, his car got more and more difficult to drive. At lap 13, he opened the door so I tried to come in, but he pulled away on me. The next time by, he moved up again. This time I wasn’t going to just watched. I wanted to dance. I pulled alongside coming out of turn three and carried enough speed to keep me in the lead all the way to turn one. By then I cleared him and there was no way he could catch up to me” said Laperle.

The race went green the rest of the distance and Laperle crossed the finish line with a four car lengths advantage over Wagner. With this win Patrick Laperle increases his championship lead over David Wagner. Laperle (218 pts) now leads by 12 points over Wagner (206 pts), by 48 points over Landon Cassill (170 pts) and by 64 over Joseph Gase (154 pts).

With only two races remaining (Thursday and Friday night) in the championship only 4 drivers (Laperle, Wagner, Cassill and Gase) are still in contention for the coveted crown. A win is worth 40 points and each position behind drops by 4 points. And a driver will get 4 points for taking the green flag.

“We are sticking to the game plan: be there at the finish and score important points towards the championship. But if the win is in sight why slow down?” said the smiling Frenchman.

Patrick Laperle is back in action on Thursday, February 12th at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, Florida for the 6th feature event of a 7 event ASA / Crate championship as part of the 43rd World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
