Douville rides the top for SCoNE win; Older, Severance carry checkered flags

For Immediate Release                                                                                                                                                                         DBS-081215-1

WEST HAVEN, VT – Kenny Tremont Jr. thought he had done it all in dirt track Modified stock car racing, but found out that there were still some "firsts" left for him to achieve.  His victory on Vermont Army National Guard Night at The Dirt Track at Devil's Bowl Speedway on Sunday, August 9 was the headline moment of a four-division card for the Berlin Optical Expressions Dirt Track Series that also saw Danny Douville, Darrell Older, and Justin Severance win.

A winner of more than 300 races and over 30 championships during his long career, Tremont went wire-to-wire in the 35-lap feature for the Liberty Street Discount Beverage & Deli Sportsman Modifieds on Sunday.  He topped a field of 25 starters to become the first driver to win more than one feature race in the Sportsman class since the new 3/10-mile Dirt Track opened at Devil's Bowl Speedway in September 2014.

The win completed a four-race weekend sweep for Tremont, which he believed to be a career-first; the West Sand Lake, NY veteran won Friday's Modified feature at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, took both the Big Block Modified and Small Block Modified features at Lebanon Valley Speedway on Saturday, and bookended the run with the Sportsman score at Devil's Bowl.

"That's got to be a first; I really don't think I've done that before," Tremont said.  "Maybe when I was a much younger man I might have won four times in a weekend, but I don't think so."

Josh Sunn of White River Junction, VT finished second after a long side-by-side fight with Middlebury, VT's Justin Comes. Sunn was also the runner-up at the Dirt Track opener in July, while Comes finished third in his first appearance of the year.  They were followed across the finish line by Tim Hodge of Vershire, VT and Leon Gonyo of Chazy, NY, while the top 10 was completed by Jackie Brown Jr., Allan Hammond, Bobby Hackel, Trevor Rocke, and D.J. Robinson.

Danny Douville took his first Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) win at Devil's Bowl after an eventful drive through the pack. The Bridgewater, NH veteran started 11th on the 15-car field, spun in the in early going, then rebounded with an impressive outside lane drive from the rear.  He passed Kevin Chaffee with seven laps left and won going away.

Chaffee, of Bradford, VT, was the runner-up, followed by Jacob Williams of Center Tuftonboro, NH.  Chris Donnelly finished fourth, and Patrick Smith had a strong showing by leading 20 laps finishing fifth.

Darrell Older of Ballston Spa, NY won the 25-lap feature race for the Renegade division after holding off a final-corner charge from Matt Mosher.  Queensbury, NY racer Mosher fell a half-car length short at the finish line, with Curtis Condon, also of Queensbury, in third place.

Justin Severance of Rutland, VT survived a four-tangle with two laps remaining to win the 15-lap Portland Glass Mini Stock feature.  Aaron Bunker of Newport, NH finished second in his first start at Devil's Bowl, with Jesse Durkee of South Royalton, VT third.

The Dirt Track at Devil's Bowl Speedway returns to action on Sunday, August 30 at 6:00 p.m. as Interstate All Battery Center and Sherwin-Williams present the first-ever appearance by the Lucas Oil POWRi Outlaw Midget Series.  Sportsman Modifieds, Renegades, and Mini Stocks are also on the card.

Devil's Bowl Speedway is located on Route 22A in West Haven, VT, four miles north of Exit 2 on U.S. Route 4.  For more information, visit www.DevilsBowlSpeedwayVT.com or call (802) 265-3112.  Devil's Bowl Speedway is on Facebook at facebook.com/DevilsBowlSpeedway and on Twitter and Instagram at @DevilsBowlSpeed; follow the action using the #DevilsBowl hashtag.

#47 WeatherTech / Groupe Bellemare - Credit Matthew Murnaghan

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Young stock car driver Josh Terry was the man to beat at Airborne Park Speedway on Saturday, August 8, as he took down the Ernie's Discount Tools 100. The victory highlighted a night of action for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series presented by Yandow Sales & Service and John Deere that also saw Jason Durgan, Kris Clark, and Nick Heywood score victories.

Terry, 21, of Essex, NY has begun to make a habit of winning in the intermediate Key R-D Trailer Sales Renegade division at Airborne, with Saturday's triumph being his third win of the season and the second 100-lap win of his career. Zach Rabtoy, Tylor Terry – the winner's brother – and Robert Gordon took turns leading the first half of the race before a scheduled refueling break at lap 50 and an invert of the top eight runners.

Josh Terry was running strong in fourth place at the halfway break, then drove from fifth at the invert to grab the lead from Dylan Rabtoy in just four laps. He led the rest of the race despite a rash of caution flags. His brother, Tylor, saw a late charge end three laps from the finish when his car burst into flames; he was uninjured but knocked out of contention.

Gordon, of Milton, VT, finished second, followed by Plattsburgh, NY's Zack Daniels, who ran near the front of the field for all 100 laps. Dylan Rabtoy of Swanton, VT finished fourth with Richie Turner of Fairfax, VT fifth. Keith O'Neil and rookie Michael Wright were next in line, followed by Tylor Terry, rookie Tony Salerno, and fan favorite Curt "Metal Man" Giventer.

The championship point lead changed hands for the third consecutive event, and Turner finds himself back on top, just one point ahead of Gordon (527-526). Previous leader Shawn Duquette fell out of the race and finished 14th, dropping to third place in the standings, 11 points behind Turner.

The headline J&S Steel Modified division saw another competitive 35-lap race, won by Jason Durgan. The Morrisonville, NY driver wasted little time getting through traffic, coming from 12th starting position to enter the top five in just four laps. He tracked down veteran Andy Heywood to grab the lead at lap 21 and sped off to his third win of the season. Point leader Nick Heywood of Plattsburgh finished as the runner-up, with his uncle Andy Heywood third in his first start of the season. Bucko Branham and Leon Gonyo completed the top five finishers, ahead of Danny Sullivan, Jayson Criss, Jamie LaFountain, Mike Wells, and Timex Morgan.

Nick Heywood was able to stretch his point lead back out to 25 points (647-622) over Greg Atkins, and Branham's recent gains leave him in third place just nine more points behind. Heywood is aiming for an unprecedented fourth consecutive track championship.

Kris Clark of Keeseville, NY won his fifth Busch Beer Mini-Modified feature of the season in a 15-lap race. Chris LaVair of Gabriels, NY finished second, followed by Dale O'Neil, Tyler Irwin, and Harold LaVair. Chris LaVair leads Clark in the championship battle by a comfortable 43 points (599-556).

Nick Heywood won the final race of the night as the Modified class was featured in the Ernie's Discount Tools "King of the Hill" one-on-one elimination bracket tournament. Heywood, the #1 seed, defeated Mike Wells and Leon Gonyo in preliminary rounds, then beat rookie Jamy Begor, the #7 seed, in the final round for the $500 winner's bonus.

Airborne Park Speedway is back in action on Saturday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m. as Vertigo Motorsports and Econo Lodge present the annual Kids' Racecar Rides at intermission and "Spectator Races" for street-legal vehicles. The event also includes Modifieds, Renegades, and a special event for the Mini-Mods. Special general admission is just $8 for adults and seniors, and free for kids age 12 and under.
