East Crown Wide Open As 2011 Season Launches At Greenville

 

Host of newcomers set to challenge returnees

 

With the departure of two-time defending champion Ryan Truex to the NASCAR Nationwide Series, the chase for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East crown will be wide open in 2011. That journey will begin on Saturday, March 26 with the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 at Greenville (S.C.) Pickens Speedway.

 

 Among the title contenders that return from a year ago, Brett Moffitt is the head of the class. The Grimes, Iowa driver's third season in the series figures to be his best. After a third-place effort in the final standings as a rookie in 2009, and a runner-up finish to Truex a year ago, Moffitt has the experience to go along with the talent to be a championship favorite. He has also moved over to Michael Waltrip Racing and into the seat vacated by Truex, which can only enhance his chances for a title.
Darrell Wallace Jr. and Max Gresham also figured to be in the title hunt. Like Moffitt, both won two races a year ago in their first full seasons in the K&N Pro Series East. Wallace remained in championship contention through the first three-quarters of the 2010 schedule while Gresham had an up-and-down year. While both figure to be a threat to win everywhere they go, they'll need to focus on consistency to mount a championship run.
While the previously-mentioned trio figures to be the odds-on favorites, there is no lack of other talent in the garage that could contend for the championship. Wallace's Revolution Racing teammates Michael Cherry, Ryan Gifford and Sergio Peña learned valuable lessons from their experience a year ago, as did D.J. Shaw, who finished ahead of each of them in the standings. And the elder statesman among the returners - Eddie MacDonald - will take another swing at what would be his first East crown. Also, don't forget about Corey LaJoie. While this will technically be his rookie season, he has logged seven starts across the two previous seasons, and finished in the top 10 in four of those outings.

 

What To Watch For

The 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season-opener at Greenville Pickens Speedway shapes up to be similar to those of recent seasons past with a number of new teams, a lot of new faces and plenty of storylines to keep an eye on.
More History for a Historical Track: Not only has Greenville Pickens produced esteemed track champions such as David Pearson, Ralph Earnhardt and Robert Pressley, but it is also one of just nine facilities that has been a sanction member of each of the 30 years of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Now it will become the first host track for the 25th season of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.
Notable Newcomers: While the list of possible newcomers to the series seems to be endless, there are a number of recognizable names that will look to launch their NASCAR career's in Greenville. Ben Kennedy - great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France - will launch his first full season at Greenville Pickens after one start in 2010. Then there's past NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Bill Elliott's son, Chase, former crew chief and NASCAR on Fox analyst Larry McReynold's son, Brandon, and former Cup driver Robert Pressley's son, Coleman.
Formation of X Team Racing: Led by successful crew chief Robert Huffman, and with strong ties to Toyota Racing Development, the newly-formed X Team Racing has already made a splash with its stable of drivers. A standout during the 2009 K&N Pro Series East season, Joe Gibbs Racing development driver Matt DiBenedetto will return to the series full-time with X Team this year. His teammate will be USAC standout Alex Bowman, and the plan is for Pressley to pilot a third car part-time.
Who Makes History This Year?: With the minimum competition aged lowered to 15 in the offseason, Elliott stands to become the youngest driver to take the green flag in series history. Could he also surpass Brett Moffitt's mark as the series' youngest pole sitter, or Darrell Wallace Jr.'s record for youngest race winner? Both of those marks were established at Greenville Pickens.
Women's Movement: The 2011 season-opener could potentially have two females take the green flag. Michelle Theriault has returned to the series for the first time since her 2007 rookie campaign while Ali Kern will also attempt to make the starting grid. The series could also see Sloan Henderson at some point in 2011.
Five Years, Five Different Winners: Each of the first five K&N Pro Series East races have produced different pole and race winners. Will Moffitt be the first with multiple poles, will Wallace be the first to get a second trip to Victory Lane, or will the trend continue?

The 2011 season is the 25th in series history. From its days as the Busch North Series, to the present-day NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, there are countless moments that have come to define the series. Each week we will take a look back at those moments and figures that have defined the series.
Logano Launches: While he may have already had a win under his belt from the K&N Pro Series West race at Phoenix International Raceway, budding star Joey Logano launched his memorable 2007 K&N Pro Series East title run with an impressive performance at Greenville Pickens Speedway. The impact was immediate as the 16-year-old drove to the pole with a lap that still stands as the track record, then led 75 of the 150 laps for the first of his five triumphs en route to a record-shattering season that resulted in the championship.

 

Last Year's Event

As with a number of the previous NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races at Greenville Pickens Speedway, last year's Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 was once again a history-maker. After Cole Whitt earned the 21 Means 21 Pole Award presented by Coors Light in his first series start to get the festivities started, Darrell Wallace Jr. took the headlines in the end as he took the lead for the third and final time on the white flag lap and held on for the checkers.
In his first race, Wallace made history on two fronts. Not only did he surpass Brett Moffitt's previous mark as the youngest race winner in K&N Pro Series East history, but he also became the first African-American to reach Victory Lane.

 

Up Next: South Boston150

For the fifth season in a row, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will visit South Boston (Va.) Speedway for the South Boston 150 on Saturday, April 16.
The first four visits for the series to the famous Virginia short track have produced four-different winners. Matt Kobyluck was the victor in the inaugural 2007 event, followed by Brian Ickler in 2008. This year's event will feature the last two race winners as Brett Moffitt (2009) and Max Gresham (2010) will vie to become the first drivers to triumph multiple times at the fast half mile.

NASCAR’s Next Generation Has Arrived

Infusion of legacy drivers in K&N Pro Series East

 

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 16, 2011) — The phrase “NASCAR’s Next Generation” has been bandied about for a decade, if not longer. Perhaps at no time has that term taken on a more literal meaning than when referring to the 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East newcomers.

 

No less than eight drivers with family ties to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series are expected to participate in the K&N Pro Series at some point in the coming season. Two have Hall of Fame lineage, one has seen his famous father hoist the Sprint Cup and another is the son of a multi-time NASCAR Nationwide Series champion.

 

The first sign of such a movement came late in the 2010 season when Ben Kennedy participated in the K&N Pro Series East event at Gresham Motorsports Park under the Mark Martin Performance banner. While a mechanical issue ended the night early for the son of NASCAR Vice Chairwoman and Executive Vice President Lesa France Kennedy – and the great grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. – the writing was on the wall that was a test run for a full campaign in 2011.

 

A similar litmus test was made by Chad Boat, son of former Indy racer Billy Boat, when he participated in the fall race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The indication again was that this was setting the stage for a full season when the calendar turned, and indeed he will compete in a car fielded by Mike Curb.

 

NASCAR Hall of Famer Junior Johnson then founded Junior Johnson Motorsports late in 2010 to field a car for his son, Robert Johnson, for the full 2011 K&N Pro Series East season. Since the calendar turned, however, the flood gates have opened for the sons racing families that are now turning to NASCAR’s top developmental series to take the next step.

 

Chase Elliott will be the first driver to take advantage of the lowering of the minimum competition age to 15 for 2011. The son of 1984 Sprint Cup Series Champion Bill Elliott signed a multi-year deal with Hendrick Motorsports and will now compete full-time – a year ahead of schedule – out of the family garage in Dawsonville, Ga.

 

The K&N Pro Series East will also see a handful of legacy drivers get their toes wet on a part-time basis this year. Ryan Blaney, the son of current Sprint Cup Series driver Dave Blaney, plans to make spot starts in a family-owned ride while longtime national series driver Robert Pressley’s son, Coleman Pressley, will compete in a number of events with the newly-formed X Team Racing. Announced just this week, Brandon McReynolds, son of former Sprint Cup Series crew chief and current NASCAR on Fox analyst Larry McReynolds, will run with longtime K&N Pro Series East team Spraker Racing Enterprises. And Clay Alexander, the son of 1983 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion and former national series driver Mike Alexander, also hopes to make his debut in the series this year.

 

Not to be forgotten is a pair of drivers who also watched their fathers compete at the touring level. Ryan Reed, the son of former K&N Pro Series West competitor Mark Reed, has moved his operation from California to North Carolina in the offseason and plans to compete part-time in the K&N Pro Series East while ASA Late Model driver Yale Conley hopes to see his son, Cale, get some action in the K&N Pro Series East in 2011.

 

This group of racing sons just adds to those of a similar background that have already been running in the K&N Pro Series East. Two-time Nationwide Series titlist Randy LaJoie’s son, Corey LaJoie, has made seven starts in the series in the two previous season and plans to run for the championship in 2011. D.J. Shaw, the son of longtime K&N Pro Series East driver and 1994 champion Dale Shaw, will also be back for his sophomore campaign and expect to see Ty Dillon, son of former Nationwide Series driver Mike Dillon and grandson of Sprint Cup Series car owner Richard Childress, also return for a few spot starts.

 

As the 2011 schedule opens at Greenville (S.C.) Pickens Speedway on Saturday, March 26 with the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150, this group of racing offspring will just be a portion of the new faces that will take to the track as three-quarters of the starting grid figures to be rookies or second-year drivers.

 

And evidenced by the national series success of recent graduates Joey Logano, Trevor Bayne, Ricky Carmichael, Austin Dillon and now Cole Whitt, the K&N Pro Series East has become the destination for the best up-and-coming prospects to launch their NASCAR careers, and the destination for fans to get a glimpse of the starts of tomorrow.

LE LEVER DE RIDEAU AURA LIEU À L’AUTODROME CHAUDIÈRE

 

Waterbury, VT---  Pour la première fois depuis 2007, le lever de rideau aura lieu à un endroit autre que l’Autodrome St-Eustache. Cette première course de la saison se tiendra à l’Autodrome Chaudière de Vallée-Jonction, mais la date n’a pas été modifiée et ce sera le 21 mai.

 

Les deux pistes concernées ont accepté cette modification. L’ouverture de la saison dans cette série ACT-Castrol coïncidera avec les festivités entourant le 20e anniversaire de ce tracé de la Beauce.

 

C’est donc dire que la première épreuve au complexe motorisé de St-Eustache aura lieu le 4 juin prochain. À noter que ces deux pistes ont tous deux, trois épreuves au calendrier de l’ACT.

Autodrome St-Eustache and Autodrome Chaudière Swap Opening Dates

Waterbury, VT – American Canadian Tour (ACT) officials announced today the 2011 Série Castrol Edge season opener on Saturday, May 21 has been changed from Autodrome St-Eustache in St-Eustache, Quebec, to the 1/3 mile Autodrome Chaudière in Vallée-Jonction, Quebec. The 100 lap St-Eustache event has been moved to Saturday, June 4.

 

The two speedways agreed to switch their opening Série Castrol Edge dates last week. It will be the first time since 2007 that the Série Castrol Edge season opener will not be held at the fast ½ mile of Autodrome St-Eustache. Autodrome Chaudière will hold the opener for the first time in Série Castrol Edge history as part of their 20th season celebration. Both tracks have three ACT events scheduled for the 2011 season including the Showdown at Chaudière all-star event in September.

The 2011 Série Castrol Edge season will now kick off at Autodrome Chaudière in Vallée-Jonction, Quebec on Saturday, May 21.

Série Sportsman Québec - compte rendu réunion 2011-03-12

Résumé réunion du 12 mars 2011

 

Plus de 25 équipes de course étaient représentées lors de la dernière réunion avant la saison 2011.M. André Poulin  a souhaité la bienvenue aux équipes présentes.

 

Lors du premier point soulevé, M. Poulin, a salué et remercié les nouveaux représentants des pilotes soit Dave Trevors, Steve McKibbin, George Asselin et Pier-Luc Labbé pour le travail accompli avec la direction de la série lors des trois premières réunions conjointes.

 

La série continuera sa nouvelle opération charme face aux amateurs de stock car du Québec en annonçant la signature d’autographe par minimum 3 pilotes à chaque course de la saison. Il y aura aussi pour les amateurs la « REVUE  SPORTSMAN 2011» qui sera distribuée à tous les autodromes visitées par la série à plus de 1000 copies. Cette revue touchera toutes les aspects de la série Sportsman (Classement, photos, articles, calendriers, présentations de pilotes, coin technique et bien d’autres).

 

Il a aussi été annoncé une légère majoration des bourses, fond de point pour la saison 2011.

 

Il a été annoncé aux pilotes une entente entre la série et l’autodrome Chaudière comprenant une année de contrat et des années d’option. Lors de cette signature, la direction de l’autodrome Chaudière, c’est engagé à ce que la revue Sportsman soit distribuée gratuitement sur son site pour les 3 prochaines saisons. Aussi une clause de non concurrence a été signée entre les deux partis pour 3 ans.

 

La série sera présente au Salon de l’Auto Sport de Québec, les 8-9-10 avril avec un kiosque et 8 voitures sur place dont deux muscles cars. Un camaro et un mustang 2011.

 

Il a aussi été voté par les pilotes le retrait du livre des règlements à compter du 13 mars 2011 du carburateur Rochester.

 

En terminant, présentement 26 pilotes ont confirmé leur retour avec la série pour 2011. D’autres inscriptions sont à venir.

NASCAR Announces 2011 Updates For Touring Series

Simplified Rookie Rules, Race Procedure Changes To Take Effect

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 4, 2011) — NASCAR announced today updates for the 2011 NASCAR regional touring series, highlighted by changes to simplify the rookie of the year award. Also announced were two changes to race procedures, the elimination of the post-qualifying redraw for starting position in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, and a cost-saving spec-fuel program for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.

 

 

Drivers will be eligible to compete for Sunoco-sponsored rookie awards for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, and NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, and rookie awards for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series if they meet the following criteria, as of the first race of their respective season:

·         The driver has not competed in more than seven career races in the respective series

·         The driver has not competed in more than three separate seasons in the respective series

·         A driver has not competed in more than three career races in NASCAR’s national series

“The changes simplify the process for determining rookie eligibility and brings the program in line with how our Competition department evaluates competitors,,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR managing director of racing operations. “This makes it easier for our fans, competitors and media to follow, and maintains the competition for the awards among drivers who can truly be classified as rookies in their series.”

Rookies will continue to be scored in each race against other rookies, and the rookie of the year will be awarded to the driver who accumulates the most rookie points in their respective series during the season.

In addition, Sunoco’s sponsorship of the four U.S.-based touring series was extended through 2019, in conjunction with its sponsorship of the national series rookie programs.

"We are thrilled to sponsor NASCAR's Rookie of the Year. It supports rising young talent, promotes the future of a great sport, and makes for exciting racing as drivers compete for the title," said Bob Owens, Sunoco's senior vice president of marketing.

For the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, the Sunoco award will be paid out to the top three drivers in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings at the year-end awards banquet. Top finishing rookies will be recognized for the accomplishments at the following race.

Also announced are a pair of race procedures rules changes that bring the touring series in line with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

·         If a green-white-checkered finish is necessary, a maximum three attempts will be made.

·         On all restarts, passing will not be permitted until the car reaches the start-finish line.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West opener at Phoenix International Raceway last month and the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown in Irwindale, Calif., in January, competed under the new guidelines.

Also, in an effort to help teams contain costs, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and long-time fuel provider New England Race Fuels will utilize a spec fuel – Sunoco Blue 112 leaded – for 13 of its 16 races. Competitors are not required to purchase the fuel at the track, but are required to use the spec fuel. For the three events held in conjunction with NASCAR national-series events (New Hampshire Motor Speedway in July and September, and Bristol Motor Speedway in August), Sunoco GTX Unleaded will continue to be used.

ACT NEWS : Sophomore Drivers Babb and Theriault Ready for 2011 ACT

Waterbury, VT – After competing in one of the closest Rookie of the Year battles in American Canadian Tour (ACT) history, Windham, Maine’s Brad Babb and Fort Kent, Maine’s Austin Theriault are ready for 2011. The two finished just three points apart in the 2010 Rookie of the Year standings.

 

Babb came out on top of the standings and claimed the 2010 ACT Rookie of the Year honors after capturing his first career top five in the season finale at Waterford (CT) Speedbowl. With the help of his crew chief and father, Bobby, a former ACT competitor, he also earned an impressive sixth place in the 2010 ACT standings.

Babb is in his senior year of high school, but has made time to work for his father’s logging company, snowmobile and prepare the car over the winter months. “We only have a couple small things left. If Lee (the 2011 season opener) was next week we’d be ready,” said Babb.

The 18 year old has now seen nearly every track on the 2011 ACT schedule and credits the 2010 season for teaching him how to adapt to new tracks. He hopes to use that knowledge to better his 6th place effort in the 2010 standings and top his career high 5th place finish at Waterford last October.

“We’d really like to finish in the top five in the standings and win a couple races, but we’ll see how everything goes before we set too high of goals,” said Babb. “I’m really looking forward to going back to White Mountain (Motorsports Park). We were going pretty good there before we broke (in 2010).” The White Mountain 150 was Babb’s only finish outside of the top 20 and the only event he did not finish.

Fellow Maine resident, Theriault has joined forces with Rick Paya Motorsports (RPM) of Georgia, Vermont, during the off season. RPM has won the ACT Late Model Tour Championship the past two seasons with driver Brian Hoar. Theriault had a successful rookie season in 2010, earning his first career top five with a second at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. He also took second in the rookie standings and seventh in the overall standings.

The 17 year old high school student took a break from his varsity wrestling schedule this winter to join his new team at the 2011 Goodyear Speedweeks Cup at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He started his sophomore season early with a respectable 13th place finish in the Cup standings with an 11th and 16th place effort in the two 100 lap events.

“I’m really looking forward to this year. I’m still just grateful to be driving an RPM car,” Theriault said. “We’re still working on the team chemistry with a brand new car.”

Babb will kick off his sophomore season and Theriault will continue his in the ACT season opening New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, New Hampshire on Sunday, April 17.
