Helliwell, Quenneville Take Rousing Spring Green Wins at Devil's Bowl Speedway

First ACT win for Helliwell; Gordon and Masterson also winners

WEST HAVEN, VT – Devil’s Bowl Speedway fans rocked the grandstands with exciting season-opening stock car racing at the 101.5 “The Fox” Spring Green on Sunday afternoon. Wayne Helliwell, Jr., and Vince Quenneville, Jr., brought the house to its feet with close finishes and emotional landmark wins. Robert Gordon and Josh Masterson each started the 2012 campaign off in victory lane as well.

Helliwell, of Dover, NH, copped his first career victory on the American-Canadian Tour in a razor-close finish with Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. Helliwell started the 112-lap main event in third place but was held up in early traffic and fell back almost outside the top then. He clawed his way back to the front on the outside lane, taking the lead from Polewarczyk just after the halfway point in the race. Hudson, NH racer Polewarczyk held nothing back during the final laps as he tried to steal the win, but Helliwell persevered for his inaugural ACT Late Model Tour score. Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, ME drove from 20^th starting position to finish third ahead of Ray Parent and Randy Potter.

Vince Quenneville, Jr., made his return to Devil’s Bowl Speedway a popular one with his home track fans, taking the first Bond Auto Parts Modified victory of the year in the 35-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series feature. Quenneville, of Brandon, VT, drove into the lead on the outside of defending champion Ron Proctor after a restart with seven laps remaining and never looked back. Proctor, of Charlton, NY, held off a furious mid-race charge from Leon Gonyo for the runner-up spot. Jessey Mueller drove from 18^th starting position to finish third, with Gonyo fourth and rookie Joey Roberts completing the unofficial top five.

Rob Gordon of Milton, VT opened the season with a 25-lap score in the Renegade feature. Gordon beat Lance Rabtoy of Fairfax, VT in a comfortable margin at the finish, but not before two- and three-wide racing in the first half of the race. Ryan Keith finished third ahead of Frank Monroe and Jeremy Jones.

Rookie Josh Masterson of Bristol, VT started his Bomber division career on the right foot by winning that class’ 20-lap feature in his first career start. Harold LaVair of Gabriels, NY held on for second place. Ray Germain, Jr., was third, followed by John McCarron and Dan Collins.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is back in action on Sunday, May 13 for a Mother’s Day Special event at 1:30pm. General admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors (62+), and free for children 12 and under. Helliwell Claims First ACT Win, Unofficially Takes Over Point Lead

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ACT-050612

West Haven, VT – Wayne Helliwell Jr. of Dover, NH dominated the second half of The Fox 101.5 Spring Green 112 on the way to his first ever American Canadian Tour victory on Sunday May 6, 2012 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Helliwell took over the lead on lap 58 and had to fend off a late race attack from Hudson, NH’s Joey Polwarczyk Jr. to take the checkers. Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, ME stormed from the 20^th starting position to take over third, Ray Parent and Randy Potter completed the top five.

The race began with weekly competitor Craig Bushey leading the first lap after a +5 in the ACT plus minus system earned him the second starting position. Multi-time Oxford Plains Speedway Champion Ricky Rolfe took over for the next 26 laps before the lead was briefly wrestled away by former Thunder Road Champion Nick Sweet. Sweet only held on to the lead for two laps before Groveton’s Randy Potter took over the point.

Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. stormed from mid-pack to take the lead away from Potter on lap 50, only to have it taken away for good by Helliwell on lap 58. Helliwell started from the third position, but faded as far back as ninth before charging through the field in the second half. Helliwell had to endure a lap 98 restart and a no holds barred assault from Polewarczyk that put the large opening day crowd on its feet to claim his first ACT win and unofficially strip Williston’s Brian Hoar of the point lead.

Hyde Park’s Eric Williams climbed from 22^nd on the starting grid to finish sixth, followed by Rolfe, Quinny Welch, Brent Dragon, and Luke Hinkley completing the top ten.

The race was slowed by seven cautions, the first of which was a multi-car wreck when Glen Luce and Jamie Fisher spun in front of the field with no laps complete. The race was completed in 1:13:26, and 19 cars finished on the lead lap. All 34 ACT Late Models in attendance started the feature event.

Wayne Helliwell Jr. earned himself an invite to the ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on September 22, 2012 with his win in the Spring Green 112. He joins Brian Hoar as the first two Invitational invitees to date.

The American Canadian Tour has next weekend off, but will be back in action at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford Maine on May 20, 2012 for the Oxford 150.

Austin Theriault: The Rattler 250 South Alabama Speedway Race Report

KINSTON, Ala. – Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, finished seventh in the caution-filled Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway in Kinston, Ala., on Sunday, March 4. Theriault started 11th in the Brad Keselowski Racing No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge after rain washed out all on-track activity on Saturday, and then he patiently avoided a slew of wrecks around him to post his best career Super Late Model finish. Theriault had worked into the Top-10 during the first half of the event, before another competitor's car spun into him and hurt the left rear of the No. 29. The team made several pit stops to try and repair the handling on Theriault's car, using some tire strategy en route to the seventh-place finish at the checkered flag.

AUSTIN, IT LOOKED LIKE YOU HAD A PRETTY GOOD CAR ALL DAY BUT JUST COULDN'T GET THE TRACK POSITION YOU NEEDED.

“The car was pretty good right off the bat. We were holding our own there. We were just trying to settle in and save our stuff, save our tires for later in the race.

“We got racing side-by-side (with the car of Stephen Nasse). I was on the outside, and we must have raced like that for five or six laps. The guy just went into the corner too hard, and he lost it all by himself. When he spun, he hit us and it did something to our rear end. I'm not sure what – something with the trailing arm or the panhard bar – but that's probably what happened when the car went away from us for a while.”

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE RACE DIRECTOR'S CALL TO HAVE YOU RESTART IN THE REAR JUST BEFORE HALFWAY?

“They put us to the back on the restart. They said we were involved in the caution. I didn't quite agree with the call, but we had to go to the back of the pack, anyway. On the next two cautions after that, we came in and tried to fix it. We never quite did, but it did get better.”

HOW MUCH BETTER WAS THE CAR?

“I thought we might have had a Top-5 car at one point, but tire strategy played into it. We kind of burned our tires coming through the field after that restart in the back. Overall, the guys worked hard all weekend and especially trying to work on the car (during the race). Pit stops were great, we gained a couple of spots on pit road, and we're definitely making progress as a team.

“The day very well could have gone downhill after that contact. We almost went a lap down at one point. Before all of the adjustments we made, we were probably five laps from going down a lap. It goes to show, you can never give up.”

AUSTIN THERIAULT, Driver of the BKR No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge, On heading to the Rattler 250 this weekend: “It's been a while since we've been to the track, and we're looking forward to continuing the success that we've had this year and building on the momentum that we've built in a short amount of time.
“Obviously, I think we're capable of having another good run. We're also looking to continue to build ourselves up as a team. We're still getting to know each other, so I think it's about going down there to have a good run and to use this race to continue to jell as a team.”

On whether his goals have changed after a strong performance at Speedfest last time out: “They don't really change at all, actually, because I still think we're capable of having really good runs every weekend that we're at the track. (Crew chief Gary Crook's) guys and everybody on the team is very capable of running well. I don't think the pressure increases, because we're still focusing on performing well.”

On what he knows about South Alabama Speedway: “I don't know much about it, to be honest. It's just another one of those races where you just arrive at the track and try to get used to it as fast as you can after a couple of runs out there during practice.

“It's kind of the story of my life – going to all these different tracks and getting used to them and having to acclimate to how every track is unique.”

Watermelon Capital Speedway Race Report

CORDELE, Ga. – Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, posted his best career Super Late Model result by finishing eighth in the season-opening CRA Speedfest 200 at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Ga., on Sunday, January 29. Theriault started 16th in the Brad Keselowski Racing No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge after an engine problem in practice on Friday, and then he used the pit strategy game to post a Top-10 finish in his third career start for BKR. Theriault pitted for right side tires only at the halfway mark of the event, which was won by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Busch, to gain the track position he would maintain until the finish.

AUSTIN, HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR RACE?

“The race went pretty well. The field was very stout, the competition was right there. We decided to take two tires (on the pit stop). I think it was the right call knowing the circumstances that we were given. A couple of other drivers did some different things – Chase Elliott took no tires, a couple up front took four. There's pros and cons to everything.

“On a couple of restarts there, we weren't able to go enough laps before we'd get another caution or two. We got stuck on the outside, and it was tough to find grip on the outside. The guys with four tires on the bottom had the advantage. To come home eighth wasn't too bad. It was a solid Top-10. It was something we can build on, and it was a good showing for BKR.”

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ENGINE DURING FRIDAY'S PRACTICE?

“I think a lot of teams would have just packed up and gone home. The guys are not afraid to work. They stayed up until two in the morning to get the motor in – it just goes to show how they'll never give up.

“We really hadn't made too many laps in practice. From what I can tell, it was just a mechanical failure in the motor. There was no predicting it. It didn't totally destroy. We kind of caught it before it blew up on the track, but we knew it was pretty severe and had to be changed.”

DID THAT SET YOU BACK FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND?

“We missed pretty much an hour and a half of practice. That made it a little tougher being that I'd never visited the track before. We still got a decent qualifying run (16th). Obviously, time trialing is still kind of new to me, and I'm learning every time we go to try and time trial. We'll go back to the drawing board and keep working on trying to improve my qualifying efforts.

“To be honest, I think we were all very happy with the finish that we got. The guys – Tyler, Adam and Gary – they worked their butts off trying to get the car back together. I think we were only able to make two practice sessions before the motor blew on Friday.”

PATRICK LAPERLE A ÉTÉ LE MEILLEUR DE LA SÉRIE ACT-CASTROL

ACT All-Star Challenge au New Hampshire Motor Speedway

En se classant respectivement douzième et quatrième lors des deux étapes de la première édition de l’ACT All-Star Challenge disputée ce week-end dans le cadre de l’épreuve de la série INDYCAR IZOD au New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Patrick Laperle de St-Denis-sur-Richelieu s’est avéré le meilleur du groupe des coureurs de la série ACT-Castrol qui étaient sur place. Le grand gagnant n’a été nul autre que le multiple champion de l’ACT, Brian Hoar qui a réussi une deuxième et une première.

C’est Austin Theriault du Maine qui a pris la deuxième position.

En vertu de ce résultat, le pilote de la Ford Fusion/LaSalle Ford a ainsi accentué son avance au cumulatif de la série ACT-Castrol, car Karl Allard de St-Félicien a pris la 23^e place au combiné avec des résultats d’une sixième lors de la confrontation de 25 tours et d’une 39^e dans la deuxième de 50 passages.

Au niveau québécois, David Michaud de Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, a réussi une 11^e au classement cumulatif de cette course, mais il a été le deuxième de la série ACT-Castrol à rallier la ligne d’arrivée. Toujours au cumulatif de ces deux étapes, Alex Labbé de St-Albert a terminé 13^e, Donald Theetge de Québec 20^e, Jean-François Déry de Québec 29^e, Dany Trépanier et Patrick Hamel, tous deux de St-Édouard-de-Lotbinière, 35 et 36^e et finalement, Marc-André Cliche de Vallée-Jonction, 43^e.

À noter que Patrick Cliche de St-Jean-Chrysostôme et Yannick Tremblay de Chicoutimi étaient également sur place, mais n’avaient pu se qualifier à l’issue des préliminaires.

La dixième manche de la série ACT-Castrol aura lieu, le samedi 27 août prochain au circuit Ste-Croix/Riverside Speedway. Brian Hoar Wins Second Segment and Overall ACT All-Star Challenge at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ACT-081311
Loudon, NH – Williston, Vermont’s Brian Hoar claimed the overall ACT All-Star Challenge title after winning the second segment at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 13. Hoar was running third on a lap 36 restart when segment one winner and leader at the time Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, Massachusetts had ignition troubles and had to retire from the event.

Hoar led the remainder of the 50 lap event, while holding off a hard charging Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine during the final laps. Hoar’s run from the 35^th starting position to the win combined with his second place finish in the first segment was enough to earn him the overall win with a near perfect three-point total. Theriault’s second was enough to earn him second in the overall finish as the only other car with a single digit score.

“We had a hot rod all week, from Test and Tune through today. I had a lot of anxiety starting 35th. It’s a lot of fun to run three and four wide here and I have to hand it to the entire field; they were respectful and gave a lane,” said Hoar. “I don’t think anybody’s ever seen that kind of racing in this place. It was a fun day.”

St-Denis, Quebec’s Patrick Laperle completed the podium with a 12^th and 4^th in the first and second segments respectively. Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, New Hampshire and Joey Laquerre of East Montpelier, Vermont completed the top five overall.

The combined segments totaled 75 laps and was completed in a total of one hour and twenty minutes with six cautions.

Hoar has already earned an invite to the ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 24. Completing the list of invites so far are Nick Sweet, Patrick Laperle, John Donahue, Daniel Descoste, Jeff White, Patrick Hamel, Alex Labbe, Donald Theetge, Kyle Busch and Jeff Taylor.

The ACT Late Model Tour will be back in action next Saturday, August 20 for a 150 lap make up event at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine. The Série ACT Castrol has next weekend off, but will head to Riverside Speedway in Ste-Croix, Quebec for the combination Can-Am 200.

Lee USA Speedway Race Report

Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, finished eighth in the ACT Late Model Tour season-opening NH Governor's Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway on Sunday, April 17. It was Theriault's best career finish at Lee USA and it came in his Tour debut with RPM Motorsports. Theriault started 23^rd after qualifying for the 30-car field through the consolation round and moved into the Top-10 just after the 100-lap mark. Theriault's RPM teammate Brian Hoar won the event.

AUSTIN, TALK ABOUT YOUR DEBUT WITH RPM AT LEE USA SPEEDWAY.

Coming out with RPM, I know it's a great experience to learn a lot from Brian and Rick. My goal was just to come out with a Top-10. Top-10s lead to Top-5s, and Top-5s lead to wins – but we'll just take it one race at a time. I'm pretty pumped up for the season.

HOW WAS YOUR CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RACE?

There was a lot of side-by-side racing. I was pretty surprised. There were a lot of wrecks, too.

In the middle of the race, you can't really judge your car. It will just free right up, and that's something that we have to learn. Next time we come here, we'll just have to make sure to start out a lot tighter at the beginning of the race.

DID YOU THINK YOU HAD MORE THAN AN 8th-PLACE FINISH IN THE CAR?

We had a pretty good car. We unloaded (for practice on Saturday) and we were decent. We just kept working on it and working on it.

The car just kept getting stronger and stronger. Toward the middle of the race, I thought we had a Top-5 car. We were coming. We passed quite a few cars. But that final caution came out, and the car just got a little too free.

All in all, I'm not disappointed at all. I think we can learn a lot from this experience.

RICK, IT WAS A GREAT DAY FOR THE ORGANIZATION AS A WHOLE.

It's very good to win the opener, of course, and to have both of our cars in the Top-8 was pretty awesome. The first time out for Austin, I think he did a helluva job.

We made a lot of progress with Austin and his team, and our guys are spot on right now. We just picked up where we left off from last year. I'm pretty excited about the year.

Theriault PR : Lee USA Speedway Race Preview

THE STORY

Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, makes his official ACT Late Model Tour debut with RPM Motorsports when the 2011 season begins with the NH Governor's Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, N.H., on Sunday afternoon, April 17. Theriault left his family-owned team during the offseason to drive for the seven-time ACT championship organization, and this will be his first points race with RPM after competing in two non-championship events at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway in February. Theriault has competed twice at Lee USA Speedway in a Late Model; once in this event last season and once in a weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series event at the .333-mile facility.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

AUSTIN THERIAULT, Driver of the No. 57 Varney Insurance Ford, On his impressions of Lee USA Speedway: “It was a cool track. As a new driver, everything there was new, but we went out and we got a Top-10. I really like the track. It seems to suit my driving style. I remember as the race went on, we got better and better. I don't know if it was me or the car getting better and better.

“Being back at tracks we've seen before, that is going to be the key thing for us this year.”

On the importance of qualifying better in 2011: “That will be a big step for us (qualifying). Don't get me wrong, the cars were great last year. But I think we'll unload off the trailer better this year and be closer to where we want to be right off. (Team owner Rick Paya) has setups down pat. We wont' be scrambling from track to track every week, and that will really help our qualifying.

“But whose to say we won't have times where the car doesn't unload well? I'm sure at times that will happen, but I can tell you I'm pretty pumped for all of the packages Rick has for me.”

On the track configuration at Lee USA Speedway: “It's a unique track. It's a fun track, too. You can pass pretty easily there as the race goes on, as the track gets a little slicker. Drivers usually like a track they can pass on.”

RICK PAYA, RPM Motorsports owner, On racing at Lee USA Speedway: “I love it. It's a very challenging track. It's unique, so it's hard to get a handle on it. I really always look forward to going to Lee.

“It has an inside groove and an outside groove, especially as the tires start to wear out. The wall all the way around the track on the outside is intimidating for a lot of people. I like it. It's a challenging track from a setup standpoint.”

UP NEXT

The ACT Late Model Tour heads to the Merchants Bank 150 at Thunder Road International Speedbowl on Sunday, May 1 for the second race of the season... Austin Theriault garnered significant attention in his Thunder Road debut in June of 2010, qualifying for the VT Governor's Cup there and finishing seventh in his first race on the quirky quarter-mile track. ACT president and Thunder Road owner Tom Curley called it at the time “the most impressive Thunder Road debut since Dave Dion.”
