Back-To-Back Top-10 Finishes Have Second-Year Driver Rolling

CLAREMONT, N.H. – At the end of a long day of practice at Thunder Road International Speedbowl two weeks ago, Luke Hinkley was noticeably frustrated.

The Claremont, N.H., driver had thrown everything he could think of at his No. 31 R.E. Hinkley Oil Dodge Charger to no avail. Nothing was making the car circle the peculiar quarter-mile any more efficiently. If Hinkley had a kitchen sink at his disposal, he probably would have thrown that at the ill-tempered car, too.

So, Hinkley made a phone call across the Green Mountains to Mitch Green, and in the middle of the night, Green offered up some advice. That advice turned Hinkley's team around 180 degrees – turning the No. 31 from a car that simply wouldn't go to one that most of the other ACT Late Model Tour teams couldn't keep up with when practice resumed the next morning.

“The knowledge level up there (at Crazy Horse Racing) is huge for us, especially now with this ACT Tour deal,” said Hinkley, 29, in his first full ACT season. “Look at that race at Thunder Road. We were 35th or 37th in practice all day on Saturday, and I called Mitch that night him and told him I'd done everything I could think of to do to it.

“Then he told me to make some changes that went against the way I would have ever thought – and we were so fast on Sunday. It was unbelievable.”

Hinkley went out and finished second in his qualifying heat and ended up posting a season-best finish of seventh in the Merchants Bank 150. He followed that by finishing 10th in last weekend's Spring Green 112 at Devil's Bowl Speedway, part of a banner day that saw three Crazy Horse Racing chassis finish inside the Top-10.

With his first career back-to-back Top-10 finishes in ACT competition, Hinkley sits sixth in the Tour standings heading into this weekend's off-weekend. He's qualified for all three ACT events in 2012 and hasn't finished outside the Top-15.

“That's one of the biggest things about the Tour is that we haven't been to a lot of the tracks that we're racing at this year,” said Hinkley, who got his start racing Mini Sprint cars on dirt as a teenager. “We had never been to Lee (USA Speedway, site of the season opener last month) before, and at Thunder Road I only had limited experience. We go to Oxford next, and I've never been there, either, or to any of the tracks in Canada.

“It's especially tough when you look at the amount of competition on that Tour. I honestly believe there are 10-15 teams each week that can win a race and have a shot each and every time. There's a lot of young kids and older veterans. It takes every little thing to win at that level.”

Hinkley dabbled in the ACT Tour in 2011, running a half-dozen events and posting a career-best finish of fourth on his home track of Twin State Speedway. He's running a Crazy Horse Racing chassis originally built for Brian Hoar – the same car Hoar drove to the 2009 ACT championship.

Having the support of the chassis builder has helped Hinkley and his relatively new team – they've only been together for three years – get up to speed sooner rather than later. In 2010, Hinkley won two Late Model features at Twin State.

“I've worked with a few different chassis builders over the years, and (Crazy Horse) is the best. They're just all great people,” Hinkley said. “You can call any of them, it doesn't matter what time, and they'll walk you through things. They'll always help you. That's been big for me.”

ACT Veteran Randy Potter Files First Season Entry

Waterbury, VT – Veteran American Canadian Tour (ACT) stock car racer Randy Potter of Groveton, NH filed the first full season entry for the 10-event 2012 ACT Tour. Potter and his Lancaster Auto Sales/Speedway Sports Park Chevrolet team were recently honored at the ACT Banquet of Champions for their 5^th place finish in the 2011 standings.

“Our chances at the 2012 title right now are as good as anyone’s, but in order to pull it out of the clutches of RPM and Brian Hoar we are going to need luck, no mechanical or mental break downs and some really good finishes in all of the 10 races,” said Potter.

During the 2011 season, Potter had one of the most consistent years of his career. He finished with four podium finishes, including three straight at White Mountain Motorsports Park, Twin State Speedway and Beech Ridge Motor Speedway. He capped off the year with a second at Airborne Speedway in the season finale.

Potter is looking forward to the 10-event 2012 season and ACT’s return to Sanair Super Speedway in St-Pie, Quebec. “Ten races will probably get more cars to run the whole tour schedule, which is good for the car counts and the competition, but it will make it tougher to qualify too,” said Potter. “I’ve always wanted to go to Sanair. Something always happens to keep us from making the trip so I hate to jinx anything, but I’m really looking forward to it.”

Potter, a former Riverside Speedway (Groveton, NH) Late Model Champion, raced off and on with ACT beginning in 1993. He returned to the Tour full-time in 2007 and immediately established himself as a championship contender with his first career ACT win in the season opener at Oxford Plains Speedway. Since 2007, Potter has finished in the top ten in the final standings each season, including three times in the top five. He is also the only driver to qualify for all 63 ACT feature events since 2007.

The 2012 will kick off with the traditional NH Governor’s Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH on Sunday, April 15.

Brian Hoar: ACT Invitational - New Hampshire Motor Speedway Race Report

LOUDON, N.H. - Brian Hoar of Williston, Vt., finished fifth in the ACT Late Model Tour's 3rd annual ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 24. After a brief, rain-shortened practice session in the morning, Hoar started 26th in the 43-car field. He drove his way to the Top-10 by the halfway point of the race and continued his march to the front, but a tight handling race car halted his march on a couple of late restarts. Hoar and his RPM Motorsports team recently secured an unprecedented eighth ACT Late Model Tour championship two weeks ago and will run the 49th People's United Bank Milk Bowl at Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, Vt. on Sunday, October 2nd.

“We had fun right up until we got tangled up with (Pete Yetman) and it crashed him. I feel horrible, but it wasn't my fault. It's kind of unfortunate – it's one of those little damperings – but the last thing I want to do is get caught up in a wreck with anybody else and and watch someone get their car totaled when we were having a great race with the guy.

“Overall, we just missed the setup. Just a little bit off. We were really, really tight. I think I know what the problem was. I think if we would have had a real practice this morning, or I put my rain tires on, I probably would have found the problem in the car but I didn't find it until the green flag flew on the feature. Immediately I went, 'Uh-oh, it's going to be a long day.'”

WHAT IS IT LIKE RACING AT NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY?

“It's still fun. I love coming to New Hampshire. It's a great race track and there's a huge fan base here. It's like a big version of Thunder Road. It's all of us guys from all over New England and Canada that have fans here. So it's a really neat experience. It's such a cool deal that we can even come here with our short track cars and race on this big track. I'm really, really psyched.

“Everybody does such a good job. We're such low men on the totem pole and we come here at 6 in the morning and not race until almost 12 hours later. The fans stuck for it. The weather turned out great. The car's in one piece and we have a car to come back with. There's always next week, and we finished fifth so it wasn't that bad. It was a fun race.”

Karl Allard, le champion de la saison 2010 dans la série ACT-Castrol, a été le meilleur des pilotes québécois qui ont participé en fin de journée à la troisième édition de la course INVITATION au New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Cet événement annuel a été remporté pour une deuxième fois par Eddie MacDonald qui a eu le meilleur devant Nick Sweet et Shawn Martin.

Pour en revenir au pilote de la Ford Fusion /Larue Équipement de déneigement, mentionnons que lors du tirage au sort, il avait hérité de la 28^e place sur la grille de départ faisant ainsi partie d’un peloton sélect qui regroupait également le vainqueur de cette épreuve, de Nick Sweet, Brad Leighton et Brian Hoar. Il a bataillé avec eux pour gagner des positions et c’est en neuvième qu’il a franchi la ligne d’arrivée.

Encore moins chanceux qu’Allard lors de la pige, Patrick Laperle, le nouveau champion de la série ACT-Castrol, a lui aussi effectué une très belle remontée pour terminer en 13^e position alors que pour sa part, Dave Michaud de Ste-Anne-des-Plaines a joué de malchance. Parti de la 21^e place, il était en pleine remontée lorsqu’au 38^e passage, il a été victime d’une crevaison dans le deuxième virage. Ayant à retourner à son puits sur sa crevaison, il a endommagé sa suspension et a du se déclarer forfait.

Donald Theetge a terminé 18^e, Jean-François Déry 19^e et Dany Trépanier 27^e.

Lt. Governor Phil Scott Draws Pole in Third Annual ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

Loudon, NH – Vermont Lieutenant Governor Phil Scott of Middlesex, VT drew the pole for the third annual ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH. Scott and his Vermont Strong Chevrolet will roll off with White Mountain Motorsports Park Champion Quinny Welch of Lancaster, NH on the outside pole, when the 50 mile event goes green at 5:35pm on Saturday, September 24.

The 43 car field was set by a blind draw for their starting positions. Eight-time ACT Tour Champion Brian Hoar of Williston, VT won the ACT All-Star Challenge at NHMS in August and will have to come from the 26^th starting position to complete the NHMS season sweep. He will start behind Inaugural ACT Invitational Champion Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, MA in 25^th and teenager Austin Theriault from Fort Kent, ME in 24^th. Theriault finished second in the All-Star Challenge earlier this season.

Former Thunder Road Late Model Champion Nick Sweet of Barre, VT will start 27^th. Série ACT Castrol Champions Karl Allard and Patrick Laperle will start 28^th and 33^rd respectively. Past NHMS track champion Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, NH will roll off 31^st. Last year’s ACT Invitational Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, NH will take the green from the 32^nd starting position.

The Third Annual ACT Invitational field is now set. Teams will complete pre-race inspection this afternoon before their 50 mile event kicks off at 5:35pm. NHMS is also hosting the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour today at 12:45pm and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at 3:00pm. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is also practicing throughout the day.

Eddie MacDonald Wins Thrilling ACT Invitational at NHMS

Loudon, NH – Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, Massachusetts claimed his second American Canadian Tour Invitational after a thrilling battle with Barre, Vermont’s Nick Sweet at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH on Saturday, September 24. MacDonald and Sweet swapped the lead four times over the final 15 laps of the 50 mile event on the “Magic Mile.” The race wasn’t decided until the final corner, when MacDonald edge Sweet coming off turn four to take the checker and the $4,000 pay day.

MacDonald seemed to have a slightly better car on the restarts, but Sweet came back strong after a couple of laps. MacDonald came from the 25^th starting position to take the lead on lap 32. Sweet came from the 27^th starting spot and cleared traffic on lap 35. The 2010 Thunder Road Champion set his sights on MacDonald with just 15 laps to go. It took him just five laps to run down the Inaugural ACT Invitational Champion and take the lead on lap 40, before the second caution of the event on lap 41.

MacDonald took the lead back after the caution, but held on for just two laps before Sweet took over again. Sweet would lead until the final caution on lap 45. One lap after the restart MacDonald took over for good, but not without a fight from Sweet. The two took the white flag side-by-side as the crowd rose to their feet. Sweet had the inside line and seemed to have the advantage down the back stretch. The two stayed door-to-door through turns three and four, but Sweet got loose coming out of four giving MacDonald the edge.

“We were lucky at the end. I was so psyched to get my new sponsor, Hancock Electric, in victory lane,” said MacDonald. “I didn’t know it was Nick (Sweet) in that car. I feel bad cutting him off, but wanted to do everything I could to win.”

“Great race at the end,” said Sweet. “Everything happens to me in twos (at NHMS). Three years ago we finished second to Eddie (MacDonald). Last year we wrecked on lap two. This year we finished second to Eddie (MacDonald) again.”

Former Oxford Plains Speedway Champion Shawn Martin of Turner, Maine led early and held off two-time White Mountain Motorsports Park Champion Quinny Welch of Lancaster, New Hampshire in the late stages of the event to take third. Brad Leighton, a former NHMS track champion from Center Harbor, New Hampshire edged out eight-time ACT Champion Brian Hoar of Williston, VT at the line to complete the top five.

“Today I felt like I was on top of the world,” said Martin. “That was probably the race of my life.”

Hoar, last year’s Invitational winner Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, New Hampshire, Tom Carey, Jr. of New Salem, Massachusetts, former Série ACT Castrol Champion Karl Allard of St-Felicien, Quebec and Glen Luce of Turner, Maine completed the top ten.

The 50 mile, third annual ACT Invitational was completed in 45 minutes and 36 seconds with three cautions including the first on lap 27 for debris. The lead was swapped six times between four drivers. MacDonald edged Sweet by just 0.161 seconds.

Many of the 43 car field will head to Barre, Vermont’s Thunder Road next weekend for the 49^th annual People’s United Bank Milk Bowl. Booth Bros./H.P. Hood qualifying will be Saturday, October 1 with the Milk Bowl on Sunday, October 2.

The ACT season will come to a close the following weekend with the Rent-A-Wreck Fall Foliage 200 at Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, New York on Saturday, October 8.
