Championship night is always special at Delaware Speedway and the 2013 edition was no exception. Drivers of the weekly divisions made up for lost time after last week's rain out and arrived anxious to run one last event in chase of the championships. The winner of the V8 Stocks feature and the unofficial champion of his division was Derek McCullough (#38) of Glencoe. Trevor Collver (#51) of Lucan finished first in the Demar Aggregates Trucks feature (his first win of the season), while Gary Adriaensen (#55) of Belmont is the unofficial championship winner. The Coca-Cola Super Stocks Race was won by Shae Gemmell (#3) of Dorchester. Jeff Showler (#44) of Mt. Elgin claimed the unofficial championship. The FT Garage Late Models feature was won by Stephen Richmond (#24) of Appin (his second career Late Model victory), while the unofficial championship winner was Jamie Cox (#22) of Dorchester, his tenth Delaware Speedway title and first in the Late Models.
Stephen Richmond (#24) of Appin won the FT Garage Late Models 40-lap race. Doug Stewart (#2) of London led the first twelve laps of the race when Richmond took the lead and held it to the end. All eyes were on the battle between Jamie Cox (#22) of Dorchester and Matt Pritiko (#21) of London. Cox brought a solid points lead to the night that went up in smoke after a heat race crash. Coming into the feature Cox's lead was down to a slim seven-point margin. Finding himself starting at the back, his championship rival Pritiko found himself involved in a lap one collision that sent him to the back and the fight for the championship was on. Cox, although passed by Pritiko, managed to keep him in his sights for the remainder of the race: enough to clinch his tenth Delaware Speedway title, his first in the top-tier FT Garage Late Model series.
Shae Gemmell (#3) of Dorchester took home the checkers in the 35-lap Coca-Cola Super Stock feature after taking the lead on the second lap. Kenny McNichol Jr. (#17) of Exeter placed second and Kris Lawrence (#28) of London placed third. Jeff Showler (#44) of Mt. Elgin unofficially won the 2013 points championship but was unable to bring his vehicle to victory lane for photos. The reason: his car caught fire during his celebratory donuts after blowing a power steering line. The Delaware Speedway safety crew was able to extinguish the fire and the trophy presentation was able to take place.
Trevor Collver (#51) of Lucan won the 25-lap Demar Aggregates Trucks feature. The win was particularly special for the team who has struggled with terrible luck all season long. Gary Adriaensen (#55) of Belmont finished second and in doing so unofficially claimed the points championship for 2013. The championship is Adriaensen's second in a row in the truck class. Brady Smith (#39) of Coldstream placed third in the race. Collver held the lead from lap one but kept the position despite Smith's and Adriaensen's furious attempts to push forward.
Derek McCullough (#38) of Glencoe won the 35-lap V8 Stocks feature as well as the unofficial points championship. Steve Arrand (#37) of Ailsa Craig placed second and Gary Zwygers (#93) of Cambridge placed third. Before the feature Arrand and McCullough were tied for points and Zwygers was only eight points behind.
Championship weekend continues tomorrow with the GAW Recycling Enduro and the Bone Stock Chaos Cars. The gates will open 1:00 PM and racing will start at 2:00 PM. The season will wrap up on October 19 with the annual Pumpkin Smasher. There will be races for the Bone Stock Chaos Cars, Open Ontario Four Cylinders, and GAW Recycling Enduro. There will also be a demolition derby. Full event details are available on the track website.
