First ACT win for Helliwell; Gordon and Masterson also winners

WEST HAVEN, VT – Devil’s Bowl Speedway fans rocked the grandstands with exciting season-opening stock car racing at the 101.5 “The Fox” Spring Green on Sunday afternoon. Wayne Helliwell, Jr., and Vince Quenneville, Jr., brought the house to its feet with close finishes and emotional landmark wins. Robert Gordon and Josh Masterson each started the 2012 campaign off in victory lane as well.

Helliwell, of Dover, NH, copped his first career victory on the American-Canadian Tour in a razor-close finish with Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. Helliwell started the 112-lap main event in third place but was held up in early traffic and fell back almost outside the top then. He clawed his way back to the front on the outside lane, taking the lead from Polewarczyk just after the halfway point in the race. Hudson, NH racer Polewarczyk held nothing back during the final laps as he tried to steal the win, but Helliwell persevered for his inaugural ACT Late Model Tour score. Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, ME drove from 20th starting position to finish third ahead of Ray Parent and Randy Potter.
Vince Quenneville, Jr., made his return to Devil’s Bowl Speedway a popular one with his home track fans, taking the first Bond Auto Parts Modified victory of the year in the 35-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series feature. Quenneville, of Brandon, VT, drove into the lead on the outside of defending champion Ron Proctor after a restart with seven laps remaining and never looked back. Proctor, of Charlton, NY, held off a furious mid-race charge from Leon Gonyo for the runner-up spot. Jessey Mueller drove from 18th starting position to finish third, with Gonyo fourth and rookie Joey Roberts completing the unofficial top five.
Rob Gordon of Milton, VT opened the season with a 25-lap score in the Renegade feature. Gordon beat Lance Rabtoy of Fairfax, VT in a comfortable margin at the finish, but not before two- and three-wide racing in the first half of the race. Ryan Keith finished third ahead of Frank Monroe and Jeremy Jones.
Rookie Josh Masterson of Bristol, VT started his Bomber division career on the right foot by winning that class’ 20-lap feature in his first career start. Harold LaVair of Gabriels, NY held on for second place. Ray Germain, Jr., was third, followed by John McCarron and Dan Collins.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ACT-050612 West Haven, VT – Wayne Helliwell Jr. of Dover, NH dominated the second half of The Fox 101.5 Spring Green 112 on the way to his first ever American Canadian Tour victory on Sunday May 6, 2012 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Helliwell took over the lead on lap 58 and had to fend off a late race attack from Hudson, NH’s Joey Polwarczyk Jr. to take the checkers. Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, ME stormed from the 20th starting position to take over third, Ray Parent and Randy Potter completed the top five. |
The race began with weekly competitor Craig Bushey leading the first lap after a +5 in the ACT plus minus system earned him the second starting position. Multi-time Oxford Plains Speedway Champion Ricky Rolfe took over for the next 26 laps before the lead was briefly wrestled away by former Thunder Road Champion Nick Sweet. Sweet only held on to the lead for two laps before Groveton’s Randy Potter took over the point. Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. stormed from mid-pack to take the lead away from Potter on lap 50, only to have it taken away for good by Helliwell on lap 58. Helliwell started from the third position, but faded as far back as ninth before charging through the field in the second half. Helliwell had to endure a lap 98 restart and a no holds barred assault from Polewarczyk that put the large opening day crowd on its feet to claim his first ACT win and unofficially strip Williston’s Brian Hoar of the point lead. Hyde Park’s Eric Williams climbed from 22nd on the starting grid to finish sixth, followed by Rolfe, Quinny Welch, Brent Dragon, and Luke Hinkley completing the top ten. The race was slowed by seven cautions, the first of which was a multi-car wreck when Glen Luce and Jamie Fisher spun in front of the field with no laps complete. The race was completed in 1:13:26, and 19 cars finished on the lead lap. All 34 ACT Late Models in attendance started the feature event. Wayne Helliwell Jr. earned himself an invite to the ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on September 22, 2012 with his win in the Spring Green 112. He joins Brian Hoar as the first two Invitational invitees to date. Barre, VT – Eight-time and defending ACT Champion Brian Hoar, of Williston VT, rode a hot streak on his way to his second win in a row on the ACT Tour in the Merchants Bank 150 on Sunday, April 29 at Thunder Road. Hoar fought off former Lee USA Champion Wayne Helliwell Jr, of Dover NH, and two-time Serie ACT Castrol Champion Patrick Laperle of St. Denis, QC for his first ever Merchants Bank 150 win.

Hoar started from the second position, after a +6 plus minus out of his heat, and stole the lead from Thunder Road defending Champion Dave Pembroke on lap 21. Hoar paced the field for 19 laps only to lose the lead to seven-time ACT Champion Jean Paul Cyr on lap 40. Cyr took the lead and looked unstoppable for 79 laps, slicing and dicing through lap traffic, until lap 109 caution in which he pitted after the other leaders to take tires. Helliwell Jr, and two-time Merchants Bank 150 Champ Nick Sweet battled it out before Sweet headed down pit road on a lap 116 caution, leaving Hoar, Laperle, and Helliwell to fight for the win.
Helliwell gave everything he had trying to pick up his first ACT tour win, nose to tail between two former ACT champs for the last 10 laps. Hoar survived an assault of moves from Helliwell, even recovering from being sideways out of turn four with two laps to go. Laperle stormed from the 19th starting position, but had to turn his focus on a late race charge for third from John Donahue of Graniteville, VT who finished fourth. Jean Paul Cyr rebounded from his tire stop to round out the top five.
The race was completed in 1:13:55 but was slowed by 6 cautions and a red flag for a multi-car wreck on lap 70. Many cars were involved including 2011 ACT Rookie of the Year Ben Ashline, multi-time Thunder Road Champion Cris Michaud, Ben Rowe, Randy Potter, Glen Luce, Cody Blake, Quinny Welch, Jamie Aube, and Brent Dragon. The multi-car incident started with Michaud bouncing off the widowmaker and collecting the remainder of the group at the entrance of pit road.
Hoar had already qualified for the Bond Auto ACT Invitational on Saturday, September 22 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, with his win in the season opener at Lee USA Speedway two weeks ago. 47 ACT Late models attempted to qualify for the 30 car field. 23 cars finished on the lead lap.
Blair Bassett of Worcester, VT claimed an emotional first ever Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman win, fending off Scott Coburn, Chris Pelkey, 2011 Rookie of the Year Kyle Pembroke, and Joe Steffen. Rounding out the top ten was Mike Martin, Dylan Payea, George May, Josh Demers, and Matt Potter.
All-time Street Stock win leader Tommy Thunder added another to the list picking up his 23rd win in dominating fashion in the Allen Lumber Street Stock division. He was chased to the line by Garry Bashaw, Bunker Hodgdon, Jason Kenison, and Daniel Lathrop. Completing the top ten was Dean Switser, Ben Belanger, Nick Pilotte, David Whitcomb, and Danny Doyle.
Thunder Road is off until Memorial Day for the 50th RV Mekkelsen Memorial Day Classic on Sunday, May 27. The American Canadian Tour Late Models head to Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, VT for 101.5 The Fox Spring Green 112 next Sunday, May 6 with a 2pm post time.

Waterbury, VT – The Ford Blue Oval Cup expects continued growth entering its third season in 2012. The program has awarded over $30,000 to American Canadian Tour Late Model teams around the Northeast U.S. and Eastern Canada since its inaugural 2010 season.

The Blue Oval Cup program was developed for Ford competitors in ACT Late Model events and ACT affiliated tracks in 2010, the first full-season of the Ford engine’s inclusion in the ACT rulebook. The program saw a near 100% increase in participating competitors during the 2011 season.
“Ford Racing is once again proud to renew the Blue Oval Challenge Cup with the American Canadian Tour. This is the third year for one of the richest programs that Ford Racing offers for the short track racer. Not only do the top 10 ACT Racers using the S347JR have the opportunity for the season end-cash rewards, but all Ford-Powered ACT Racers have access to technical support directly from Ford Racing,” said Mike Delahanty of Ford Racing. “In the three years since introducing the Blue Oval Challenge Cup, a number of the top ACT Teams have made the switch to the S347JR engine, not just for the benefits of the program, but for the race-winning performance that the engine delivers.”
The program is expected to continue to grow during the 2012 season as Ford has posted $27,000 in awards for Ford Late Model teams. The Ford awards contingencies to podium finishing Ford competitors in all ACT events throughout the season. Registered Ford teams also receive points all season long for competition in ACT events and ACT affiliated tracks for the Ford Blue Oval Cup.
Wayne Helliwell, Jr. earned his second straight Ford Blue Oval Cup Championship in 2011, while also claiming second in the ACT standings. Ford has also scored several big wins, including Joey Polewarczyk, Jr.’s 2010 ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, 2010 People’s United Bank Milk Bowl at Thunder Road and 2011 Goodyear Speedweeks Cup at New Smyrna (FL) Speedway.
The 2012 ACT season will kick off on Sunday, April 15th with the New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH.

Hoar began the race in the 18th starting position after winning his heat race but earning a 0 in the ACT Plus/Minus handicap system. The veteran moved through the field and ran just outside the top five while saving his tires and his car for a late race run to the front and the win. |
Colchester, VT’s Scott Dragon started on the pole and led all but 1 of the first 116 laps while battling with Groveton, NH’s Randy Potter and St-Felicien, QC’s Karl Allard early in the race. Multi-time Lee USA Speedway Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr. was also in the mix running as high as second. Hoar and Graniteville’s John Donahue seemingly came from nowhere after the final caution on lap 115 to make a run to the front. Hoar took the win while Donahue inherited the runner-up position after apparent second place finisher Brad Babb, a sophomore driver from Windham, ME, was penalized to the last car on the lead lap (9th) for using an unregistered tire. Fulton Mountain of Barrington, NH would claim third, Helliwell held on for fourth and Scott Dragon faded to fifth late. Potter, sophomore driver Austin Theriault, Allard, Babb, and Mark Lamberton completed the top ten. Milton, VT’s Brent Dragon managed an eleventh place finish after being involved in an accident with Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, NH and Craig Bushey of Fairfax, VT on lap 46. Polewarczyk and Bushey would retire from the event and settle for 26th and 24th respectively. The event was completed in one hour and sixteen minutes with seven cautions. Past American Canadian Tour Champions, Brian Hoar from Williston, VT, Karl Allard, Ste Felicien, QC, Donald Theetge, Quebec City, QC and Patrick Laperle from Ste-Denis sur Richeleau, west of Montreal, have all won multiple championships during their successful careers. Hoar is a seven time and defending ACT Champion. He has been winning races at all levels of competition for nearly 20 years. After winning five ACT Late Model championships between 1993 and 2000, he moved over to the former NASCAR Busch East division. He became a top competitor, won Rookie of the year in 2001, a Busch East race at Thunder Road Speedbowl in ’03, and the yearly track championship at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2006. “The New Smyrna events are going to be great for our team. First we want to have some fun. We also want to try and get some momentum heading into the coming season. I think this will be the ultimate ‘neutral track’ for all our teams. I guess Joey (Polewarczyk), Patrick (Laperle) and Eric Chase are the only guys to have been there. I might have to follow Joey around for a few laps, but we are kind of tired of finishing behind him after his great run last September. Hopefully we can turn that around in a few days,” said Hoar. Theetge and Allard are two of the most successful short track ‘long track’ (tracks ½ mile or longer) stars in the ACT organization. Laperle is the only driver to win both the ACT US title and the ACT Serie Castrol title. Laperle has also competed, won, and nearly won the overall title in the crate division at New Smyrna Speedway’s 10 days of short track racing two years ago. Joey Pole, from Hudson, NH is currently the leader of the pack among ACT’s 21 year-old and under group of talent. He won five races in the last half of the 2010 season, with two career highlights: in September, the ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and the 48th annual Milk Bowl at Thunder Road in Barre, VT. Among others, Pole will be joined by Série Castrol Rookie of the Year Alex Labbe from Ste-Albert, QC, and U.S. Rookie-of-the-Year runner-up Austin Theriault from Fort Kent, ME. Long-time ACT followers will be surprised to see Mike Bruno from Rutland, VT returning to ACT after a number of years off racing on the former Busch East Series, the Dirt Modifieds in New York and Vermont, and more recently Dirt Asphalt Modifieds. 2010 Lee USA Speedway track champion, Wayne Helliwell, Jr. and Twin State Speedway, Claremont, NH champ Aaron Fellows have joined the field for the Goodyear Speedweeks Cup. Twenty-eight teams from New England, New York, Quebec and Ontario will head south for the unique ACT twin 100-lap format event. Sunday, February 13th and Monday February 14th will start the 2011 stock car season for those teams. Northern style qualifying and double file restarts will be in effect. On Monday the best will have to come from the rear following results from Sunday. Joey Polewarcyzk, Jr. (Pole) from Hudson, NH was the hottest driver on the ACT at the end of 2010. His wins at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) ACT Invitational last September were followed up with a $15,000 payday at the Peoples United Bank Milk Bowl at Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, VT. Pole finished the touring season with a stunning performance in the 150-lap closer at the Waterford Speedbowl in Connecticut. “I had a great finish to what started out as being a little frustrating while we tried to get our Ford program mastered during the first half of the season. I have to give my dad (Joe Pole Sr.) and the whole team a lot of credit for the effort they put in to get the car to work. It sure paid off when we got to NHMS and Thunder Road for those big races,” said Pole. “We won on the mile at New Hampshire, the high-banked ¼ mile at Thunder Road, and then the 1/3rd mile at the Waterford. Now we get to tackle the ½ mile at New Smyrna. It should be a great break from the snow and cold and get us headed for the 2011 ACT title in the spring,” concluded Pole. Joey Pole was only one of a few ACT drivers who have competed at the famous winter haven for short track racers and fans, the New Smyrna Speedway. Pole will be joined by Lee USA Speedway Late Model Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr.from Dover, NH. Helliwell won 9 feature events driving for Bruce Bernhardt’s Ford team in 2010. The team has entered the full 2011 ACT US schedule and is using the Goodyear Speedweeks Cup event to get an early start to the season. Joey Laquerre from Barre, VT, a veteran racer for over four decades, will round out the Ford team heading to New Smyrna over the February Speedweeks campaign. Laquerre had one of the fastest Fords at the Invitational last September and likes the speed tracks. “I really am excited about heading to New Smyrna this February. I like our chances with our Ford against the 20+ Chevys we will compete against at NSS. I have raced at a lot of places over a lot of years, but this is one trip that I am really happy to be a part of. Everyone should have fun and a good break from the winter,” said Laquerre. The Goodyear Speedweek Cup will feature double 100-lap events. Sunday, February 13, 2011 will be the first feature, and then the field will be inverted for the second 100-lap event to be held on Monday, February 14, 2011. Both features will pay a moderate purse, with the bulk of the $30,000.00 posted awards going to the overall combined standings of the two events. For Immediate Release ACT – 042710-27 Waterbury, VT – The American Canadian Tour (ACT) announced today that the highly anticipated Ford Blue Oval Challenge winner’s share of the overall point fund has been increased from $3,000 up to $5,000 to win. A lucrative Ford contingency program was announced late last fall for the teams on both the ACT US and Castrol programs. Also, all Ford teams running at approved affiliate ACT tracks will be eligible to receive bonus money in the Blue Oval Challenge Cup portion of the overall program. Mike Delahanty, the Program Manager-Sportsman Circle Track Racing for the Ford Racing Technology Division of Ford Racing, announced last February the program for ACT Ford competitors. It is one of the richest contingency programs in the history of ACT with over $35,000 up for grabs among the region’s Ford crate teams. |
“I know all the Ford teams that are associated with ACT are very appreciative of the support Ford Racing has given those teams that are supporting them,” said ACT President Tom Curley. “We have at least 10 teams that will be receiving points for this program in the 2010 season in both Tour racing and weekly racing. The jump from $3,000 to win the inaugural Blue Oval Challenge Cup to $5,000 certainly speaks to Ford’s commitment to short track racing in our region,” finished Curley.
