SOUTH PARIS, Maine – It's still early on a Saturday night, at least by stock car racing's standards, when Mitch Green's cell phone rings.
“The first thing I'm thinking is, 'Uh-oh. This can't be good,'” Green recalls. “Usually when you get that call so soon, something must have gone wrong.”


Green bids a hello to the voice on the other end and then tentatively asks how things have gone at a race track on the other side of New England. He is pleased when Jeff Marshall, a competitor in the weekly Late Model division at Riverside Speedway in Groveton, N.H., fills him in on some good news.
“We won!” Marshall tells Green, and Green is already smiling.
From that night on, Marshall never tried another trick with his stock car – riding Green's advice and a setup provided by Crazy Horse Racing to the 2011 Riverside Speedway track championship.
“Those are the things that I enjoy most about being in this business,” said Green, who took over Crazy Horse Racing in 2008 – combining the chassis builder known as Race Basics with his own race car parts business. What competitors have enjoyed the most is Crazy Horse Racing's reputation for success on short tracks across the northeastern United States and eastern Canada.
In four short years, Crazy Horse Racing teams have won dozens of feature races and ACT Late Model Tour main events. In a relatively short period of time, the former schoolteacher, his wife, Judy, and his son, Mickey, have made Crazy Horse Racing into a name synonymous with success.
Last weekend during Waterford (Conn.) Speedbowl's traditional opening day for New England short-track racing, Crazy Horse Racing teams claimed six of the Top-9 finishing positions in a 50-lap Late Model event, including race winner Keith Rocco for car owner Scott Fearn. The day also featured the debut of the 2012 Crazy Horse chassis, one driven by Travis Stearns.
“The reason that we have good-going cars is because we have a lot of great drivers and teams,” Green said. “Because of their outcomes, they propel our business. When Judy and I got into this, we did it because we love the sport. Our enthusiasm sets us apart. We're not in this for the money... We put in ungodly hours – but if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.”
Certainly, Crazy Horse's customers don't feel as though they're part of a business transaction. As important as performance is a commitment to helping its teams both find and maintain success.
No matter where they're competing.
“We've got 40-50 cars across the U.S. and Canada, and every one of those guys has my cell phone number and Mickey's cell phone number. So, they know we're accessible,” Green said. “If they have an issue or a concern, they know they can feel free to call anytime they need to.
“Our philosophy on that is that the Wednesday night four-cylinder guys at Oxford (Plains Speedway) are just as important to us as the (ACT Tour) cars we setup for Loudon. The guy sitting in that seat, it's just as important to him as it is for the guy running at New Hampshire. Sure, they walk in and they know we build Late Models here, but they also walk in and they know that they are every bit as important to us.
“It has to be that way.”
Crazy Horse Racing is located in South Paris, but its reach extends far beyond nearby Oxford Plains Speedway. Welch won the 2011 track championship at White Mountain Motorsports Park – one of the highlights of Green's tenure as a chassis builder – while Marshall and Aaron Fellows (Canaan Fair Speedway) also won track titles.
But, as Stearns rolling out a new car illustrated over the weekend, there is no resting on the laurels of previous wins or championships.
“Competition is the best thing that there is to improve your product,” Green said. “Never say you're the best, because it will turn around and bite you. While you're sitting around high-fiving, the other guys are going by you.”
Not in this case they're not.

STECKLY DOMINATES AT ANTIGONSIH

ANTIGONISH, NOVA SCOTIA, September 19, 2011: It doesn’t get much better for Scott Steckly, driver of the 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge.  This Saturday in Antigonish, Steckly’s performance was consistent as he took the top spot in both practice and qualifying and then went on to win the Komatsu 300 furthering his points lead in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

After a few adjustments in practice, Steckly posted the quickest time.  Then in qualifying, Steckly manoeuvred the .333 mile high banked oval in a time of 14.587 seconds with an average speed of over 82 miles per hour. The time would hold up for the duration of qualifying, earning Steckly and the 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Team their third Keystone Light pole award of the season.

 

Steckly wasted no time with the drop of the green flag he pulled out into the lead. The top three continued to pull away from the rest of the field and by lap 80 Steckly had over a straightaway lead, maintaining the top spot until lap 88 when he slipped backed into third.

Shortly thereafter, on lap 105, the first caution came out.  Most of the field went to pit road for fuel and tires, but Steckly only took fuel.  It was a quick stop allowing Steckly to restart at the front of the field, but it didn’t take long for the 22 Racing Dodge, without the benefit of new tires to quickly fall back to sixth.  “We fell off a bit,” said Steckly. “I just paced myself not wanting to further wear out the tires and ensure we were there at the end.”

Steckly got the break he was looking on lap 144 with a second caution wasting no time making his way to the pits.  Steckly was one of only a handful of drivers to take advantage of the pit twice on the second caution and as a result he would restart in seventh.  “My crew made a great call, and fortunately we were able to get all four tires,” commented Steckly after the race.

 

On the restart the field checked up and as a result there was another quick caution.  This time several drivers made their way to pit road allowing Steckly to move up to fourth position.  On lap 188 Steckly took over the second spot and by lap 201 Steckly made his move on the No. 7 car of Pete Sheppard III to take over the lead again and the Canadian Tire driver never looked back. With the remainder of the race run caution free, Steckly was able to manoeuvre his way through the lapped traffic, leading the final 99 laps of the Komatsu 300.  Steckly crossed the finish line in first place taking home the checkered flag and his 3rd victory in the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season.

It was the best day possible,” said Steckly after the race. “We were the fastest car in practice; we won the pole and then won the race. I can’t ask for much more than that. I’m so proud of this whole Canadian Tire team. We didn’t come here looking to protect the points lead; we came here for the win.”

The Komatsu 300 will air on TSN on September 24th at 2:30 p.m.  EST.

Steckly extended his points lead in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series standings to 94 points over second place driver DJ Kennington, with only one event remaining. The final stop on the 2011 tour for Steckly and the 22 team will be on September 24th at Kawartha Speedway in Fraserville, ON.

TENTH FOR DILLEY AT RIVERSIDE

ANTIGONISH, NOVA SCOTIA, Sunday September 18, 2011: Mark Dilley driver of the No. 9 Rheem/PartSource/Farwell Racing Dodge was tenth quickest in practice and bettered that with the eighth quickest time in qualifying. After a mid race incident on track, Dilley was forced to come to pit road to remove the hood causing him to lose a lap he could never regain.

In Practice the No. 9 team made several adjustments to the car including the springs, the gear and sway bar to get ready for qualifying. Dilley turned several laps on the .333 mile high-banked oval and posted the 10th quickest time.

Dilley was the first car to attempt qualifying and with little to no rubber on the track he scored a time of 14.732 seconds and an average speed of over 81 miles per hour which would earn Dilley a starting spot on the outside of row four in eighth position.

 

Within the first five laps of the Komatsu 300, Dilley had made his way up to seventh and he maintained that position for the next 35 laps, after which he slipped back to tenth.  The first 100 laps were caution free and with the leaders running times at par with qualifying, Dilley and several others went down a lap on the track.

He was still running in tenth when the first caution came out on lap 105. At that time, Dilley made his way to pit road for fuel and came back in the next lap for left side tires. When he came in the second time he was boxed in his pit stall and had difficulty getting out and as such, Dilley would restart in 11th one lap down.

After the restart there was another long green flag run and Dilley was trying to get himself into position to receive the lucky dog and get his lap back.  However, just before the next caution, the leaders passed one more car and Dilley was no longer eligible to receive the free pass. When the next caution came out on lap 144, Dilley came to pit road for right side tires getting set to go the distance. On the ensuing restart, several cars checked up and with nowhere to go, Dilley ran into the car in front of him, buckling the hood. At this time NASCAR made the decision to bring the No. 9 Dodge Challenger to pit road under green to remove the hood for safety reasons, causing Dilley to lose another lap.

After making his way back on the track Dilley was running times consistent with the leaders, but the event would stay green for the remainder of the race and Dilley was not able to gain any of his laps back. A tenth place finish was the final result. 

“Not the day that we were looking for,” said Dilley. “We should never have been in the position we were in and had to come in under green to remove the hood. I just hate it for my team, they worked so hard to make this car faster, but we will be running up front in Kawartha.”

The Komatsu 300 presented will air on TSN on Saturday September 24th at 2:30 p.m. EST.

Dilley has maintained sixth place in the NASCAR point standings and will be back on track September 24th Kawartha Speedway for the final event in the 2011 season.

Pro All Stars Series news: PASS Sportsman Riverside Speedway race report

Dan McKeage claims PASS Sportsman win, Championship at Riverside

Groveton NH (10/18) Dan McKeage got around Clyde Hennessey on lap 61 of the PASS Sportsman season finale at Riverside Speedway and held off Mike” Landry at the checkers to claim his second win of 2010. Landry crossed the finish line second and Hennessey third. McKeage’s win sealed a second PASS Sportsman Championship for the Gorham Maine racer.

 

Hennessey led the field to the green and he was in command for the majority of the laps butt McKeage was in the right place at the right time. Trouble in the low groove gave McKeage the break he needed and he was quick to take advantage.  Landry made a pass on the low side to kick Hennessey back to the third spot and the trio raced to the checkers in that order. Nate Weston and RJ Austin completed the top five. Heat race wins went to Landry, Hennessey and Rich Paradis.

Unofficially there were several shifts in the final point standings. Defending Sportsman champion Carey Martin trailed McKeage by fourteen heading into the finale but Martin had an afternoon he would rather forget. He came back from a wreck to finish sixth but ran fourth in his heat while third place point man Landry claimed five markers for winning his. The three point spread was just enough to give him Landry second in the final standings. Hennessey remained in fourth and Shane Tatro fifth despite being involved in a late race wreck that left him 20th at the checkers. RJ Austin’s top five helped him make a big move from tenth to sixth, just one point back from Tatro.
