LAPERLE - ALBANY-SARATOGA

Patrick Laperle in New Smyrna Speedway's victory circle (February 2010).

Its official, the 2008 ACT Champion and the 2007 ACT Castrol Champion, Patrick Laperle confirmed he will participate in the ACT opener race at Albany-Saratoga scheduled for this weekend.

Laperle who slamed the door on ACT competition after « serious scoring and officiating decisions” by ACT Castrol Officials at the conclusion of the 2009 championship at Autodrome St-Eustache despite this will compete in the race sanctionned by the group.

“We didn’t forget what happened that weekend. But we have two ACT cars (and one PRO Stock) in the garage and if we intend on continuing racing we will be racing with them at one point or another. Nevertheless we do not plan on championship racing on either side of the border” said Laperle.

The first ever ACT Tour event at Albany-Saratoga is scheduled for April 25th. The 4/10 mile track in Malta, NY was on dirt up until last year. A return to sources in some way. Lets recall that the legendary Quebec driver Denis Giroux was competing on a regular basis in the early 70s at the facility he called home away from home. Giroux the best ever finishing Quebec driver at Daytona having finished 3rd in the Permatex 300.

Other than Laperle the Decoste brothers are said to also compete in the event.

ALBANY-SARATOGA SPEEDWAY TO OPEN THE ACT SEASON

For Immediate Release                                                ACT – 041610-22

Waterbury, VT – The rain postponement at the Lee USA Speedway has opened the door for the first race of the 2010 American Canadian Tour (ACT) season to be held next weekend (April 25) at the Albany Saratoga Speedway located in Malta, New York. The recently paved 4/10-mile speed plant will be the ultimate ‘neutral’ track for the ACT teams. The track changed to asphalt for the 2010 season, after over 35 years as a dirt race track. This will be the first appearance ever for ACT Late Model race teams.

“This should be pretty interesting. There are only a couple of teams that have been to Albany-Saratoga testing this Spring, so just about nobody has any real edge going into the first race of the season,” said ACT Director of Competition, Dean Gallison. “With the new asphalt, the experience of these teams as far as set up goes will be more critical than ever. It should be a great show”, concluded Gallison.

Over 30 teams are expected to open the ACT season at the historic Malta facility, owned and managed by the Champlain Valley Racing Association, (CVRA), along with sister track, Devil’s Bowl in Fair Haven, VT, which is also being transformed from the ½ mile dirt to asphalt for the upcoming season.

Defending and six-time ACT Tour Champion Brian Hoar and the RPM race team out of Georgia, VT is an early favorite, but the list of contenders to challenge Hoar is long. Seven-time Champion Jean-Paul Cyr and veteran Brent Dragon, both from Milton, VT, will bring lots of experience into the opening 100 lap event.

“This is really neat to be going to Malta (Albany Saratoga),” said Dragon. “I have heard lots about the races there in the ‘60’s from my dad (Harmon “Beaver” Dragon) and uncle, (Bobby Dragon). They say it was one of the places that everybody from New England and New York used to head for on Friday nights in the old days. It will be fun to take them back there next week.”

Others who have entered include Ford drivers Joey Polewarczyk from Hudson, NH and John Donahue from Graniteville, VT, both early picks to challenge for the 2010 title. The Ford versus Chevy rivalry has come back to the northeast with the development of a compatible Ford engine to compete with the GM power plants. Teams from all New England states and the provinces of Quebec and Ontario are expected to begin the long championship campaign next weekend at Albany-Saratoga.

The winner of the Albany-Saratoga Speedway 100 lap event will be the first to qualify for the second edition of the New Hampshire Motor Speedway ACT Invitational to be held on Saturday, September 18 during the NASCAR Cup Chase weekend, a goal every driver in the field will have going into each race this season. There will be a test and tune session for ACT teams at Albany-Saratoga on Saturday afternoon, April 24th. On Sunday, April 25th, a full card of qualifying will be capped off with the 100-lap main event. Gates open on Sunday at 11:00 and post time is 1:00. Admission is only $18.00 for adults and kids are free.

For additional information contact the ACT office at 802.244.6963, www.acttour.com, or media@acttour.com. Information is also available at www.cvra.com or at 518.587.0220.

2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Practise Day May 18th at Delaware - Tickets on Sale for Series Opener June 5th.

The countdown to the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 is officially on, with Tuesday May 18th set aside as Practise Day.  It’s free to fans who want to drop by Delaware Speedway and watch NCATS teams to put their cars through their paces on the legendary half-mile track.  Canada’s premier NASCAR racing series is kicking off June 5th with the opening race, hosted by Delaware.

Joe Czernai, Delaware Speedway’s General Manager, couldn’t be prouder to host the cream of this country’s racing crop and open the series.

“We’re extremely excited to be kicking off the 2010 NCATS season.  Last year it was our biggest event and this year promises to be even bigger. The hype and atmosphere surrounding the festivities is awesome. Our partnership with NASCAR and NASCAR CANADA has allowed us to expand and market our product to people that may not have heard of or been to Delaware Speedway before. We are privileged to be kicking off the season and have some of our weekly competitors and some familiar faces back here at the track competing for the big prize!”

In the series’ 2009 stop at Delaware, local favourite D.J. Kennington rode to Victory Lane and finished the season second in points.  Although he’s currently south of the 49th parallel competing in select NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races and possibly some Nationwide races, D.J. will return to his home track to defend his title June 5th. 2009 National Series champ Andrew Ranger will also race in the opener at Delaware.

Series Director Brad Moran can’t wait to get the season started.

“Everything is rounding into shape and it should be another competitive season for the great NASCAR fans in Canada.  It’s only fitting that we kick off the season at Delaware Speedway; a place with great history in Canadian stock-car racing. Getting it on the schedule last year was a thrill to everyone associated with the series. The time and effort that everyone put into that race paid off with a tremendous event which I’m sure we’ll have again this year.”

Tickets are now on sale for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1, June 5th at Delaware Speedway.  There are some nice price breaks for purchasing certain tickets online in advance, via www.delawarespeedway.com .  Whether you’re bringing clients, your family or just getting together with some buddies, the kick-off to the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 promises to offer thrills and excitement as race fans from coast to coast turn their attention to the action at Delaware Speedway on June 5th 2010.

Pro All Stars series news - Speedway 95 preview

For Immediate release: Media contact Norm Desjardins

PASS North 2010 gets the green Sunday at Speedway 95

Naples ME (4/12) The Pro All Stars Series will roll into Hermon Maine’s Speedway 95 this weekend for their 2010 lid-lifter and there’s bound to be plenty of surprises in store when all three PASS touring divisions take to the track on Sunday in their only 2010 appearance at Maine’s family fun track.

The super late models headline the show with 150 green flag laps and the tough old Speedway 95 oval always presents a challenge for the touring pros. Johnny Clark will be looking  to break the deadlock with Ben Rowe for PASS North  titles won and the Farmingdale speed merchant  has his championship team intact and ready for 2010. Clark is looking for three championships in a row and it’s hard to bet against his accomplishing the feat.

New lineups abound with Ben Rowe’s ride in the Scott Mulkern Racing 48 at the top of the list. Rowe has two 2010 southern starts under his belt and despite more than his share of bad luck the team has led races and shown promise. A return to home turf should be welcome for the four time PASS North champ.

Scott Chubbuck, Richie Dearborn, Cassius Clark and Kelly Moore are just a few of the drivers that could spoil the opening day party for Clark and Rowe.  PASS North rookie contender Joey Doiron will see how he measures up at the Odlin Road oval, as will Scott Alexander, Gary Bellefleur, Quebec’s Alexandre Gingras,  home town favorite Gary Smith, Chuck Colby, Donnie Whitten and  plenty more.

If the rumors are true Speedway 95 could see the strongest opening day field of PASS Mods ever. There’s several new combinations expected to make their Mod debut, including  veteran  Alan Wilson who’s sure to make a run at the 2010 title.

You never know who will make a run at the PASS Sportsman win. There’s so much talent in the division and they put on a show wherever they go. 2009 Champion Carey Martin, Mike Landry, Lyman and Dan McKeage, Duane Seekins, Shane Tatro, Billy Childs Jr., David Vaughn - they all have a shot at Speedway 95 victory lane.

Legends cars complete a four division card with plenty of green flag feature racing.

On Saturday April 17 all divisions will have a four hour practice. The pit gate opens at noon and each division will alternate on track  from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM.  Sunday April 18 is race day and practice gets underway at 11:00 AM.  Heat races will get the green at 1:30 PM.

DONAHUE JOINS THE FORD BLUE OVAL CHALLENGE TEAM

For Immediate Release                                              ACT – 041210-21

Waterbury, VT – John Donahue from Graniteville, VT is the latest to join what has become a potent Ford Blue Oval Challenge Team for the 2010 campaign on the American Canadian Tour (ACT). Donahue was the hottest driver during the final half of the 2009 campaign. He is a favorite to contend for the title in 2010.

“I have always been a Ford man, and it was driving me crazy hearing about all the good teams that have gone to a Ford motor program for the coming season,” said team owner Kendall Roberts, from Barre, VT. “Just look at the top teams that are running Fords this year--- Michaud, Pole (Joey Polewarczyk), that guy that won the Lee championship (Wayne Helliwell, Jr.), we raced against him at Groveton and he is a very good racer. I just had to get on the bandwagon. We plan to give Ford and our National Guard Ford Fusion the ACT title in a FORD”, concluded Roberts.  Joey Laquerre, from East Montpelier, Vermont and Glen Luce, from Turner, ME are also part of the Ford program. Both are veteran drivers with multiple championships and wins.

The Ford short track racing division has posted a lucrative contingency program for all competitors running ACT legal Late Models throughout the Northeast and the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. The highlight of the program is the Ford Blue Oval Cup Challenge. This program will use a unique system of combining finishes for all Ford team members registered with ACT during the 2010 season. Both the weekly competitors and the touring teams can accumulate points at any and all events they participate in during the season. The program encourages weekly teams to try some tour racing and tour regulars to visit any of over a dozen ACT affiliate tracks that are using the universal rules package for Late Models started by ACT in 1999.

The opening event on the ACT schedule will take green at Lee USA Speedway on Sunday, April 18, 2010. There are expected to be at least seven (7) Ford teams represented at the opening event. This will be the largest number of Ford teams to ever appear in an ACT event over the past 25 years.

For additional information contact the ACT office at 802.244.6963 or media@acttour.com, or Lee USA Speedway at 978.462.4252.

KYLE HIEBER FENDS OFF MODIFIED STAR JEFF STRUNK FOR SPEEDSTR SERIES OPENER VICTORY AT GRANDVIEW

Bechtelsville, PA. April 11th:  Kyle Hieber beat the best Sunday afternoon at Grandview Speedway. Hieber, 17, of Langhorne, Pa., repelled the advances of eight-time and defending NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 358-Modified track champion Jeff Strunk to win the 20-lap SpeedSTR Series Season Opener.

Strunk, moonlighting in a No. 2 SpeedSTR ride arranged by Speedway Entertainment, settled for second-place pay. For Hieber, the win was his second in SpeedSTR competition. He won once last year at Trail-Way Speedway in Hanover, Pa.

"He has won so many Modified championships here, it was definitely on my mind," Hieber said of his battle with Strunk.

Hieber won the race in a No. 5 car owned by Rich Tobias. His own car was sidelined with a lack of oil pressure. "My car is at home, so Rich let me hop in this car," Hieber said, adding that he was originally slated to pick up a ride in the Doug Rose No. DR1 but didn't fit properly in the car. His brother, Gary, took over that car.

Hieber started the feature second and took command at the outset. Strunk, starting fourth, drove into the runner-up spot by lap two. A yellow on lap five for the slowing No. 10 of Mario Page put Strunk on Hieber's rear bumper for a single-file restart. Strunk looked to the inside entering turn one. Hieber turned back the advance and held the top spot.

"I was trying to get my rhythm going," Hieber said. "Jeff poked his nose the one time, so I figured I'd hug the bottom." Hieber's plan worked to perfection. He outdistanced Strunk to the checkered by nearly a half-straightaway to cap a winning weekend that included a Slingshot victory Friday night at Linda's Speedway in Jonestown, Pa.

Strunk, 41, of Bechtelsville, Pa., trailed Hieber in his second SpeedSTR start. He made one start last year at Sundance Vacations Speedway, a paved oval in St. John's, Pa. "I'll have to save my first win of the year for a Modified, I guess," Strunk said. "This was the first time I ran one of these cars on dirt. I ran on the asphalt last year. You've got to run them on the edge, that's for sure."

Pole starter Don Zrinski of Piscataway, N.J., finished third, reclaiming the position after a back-and-forth battle with Gary Hieber Jr. of Langhorne, Pa., who placed fourth. Tyler Potts of Milford, N.J., completed the front five.

SPEEDSTR SHORTS: Fourteen cars took part in the program. Heat winners were Strunk and Potts.... The afternoon marked the debut of Freddie Rahmer Jr., son of Sprint Car icon Fred Rahmer. The Salfordville, Pa., youngster clipped the wall in feature action, busting the car's pan hard rod. The elder Rahmer couldn't stick around to watch his son compete in the feature; he had a race to run at Susquehanna (Pa.) Speedway Park....

Doug Sherwood and Curt Weller both took wild rides in heat action. Sherwood made repairs for the feature, while Weller was done for the afternoon.... Winner Kyle Hieber has a strong racing lineage with his father Gary, uncle Danny and brother Gary Jr. all active in the sport....

The SpeedSTR Series resumes May 9 (Sunday) at Grandview in another doubleheader with the NEETS Enduro contingent. For further information, visit the SpeedSTR Web site: www.speedstr.biz....

SpeedSTR Feature Finish: KYLE HIEBER, Jeff Strunk, Don Zrinski, Gary Hieber Jr., Tyler Potts, Gary Huber, Doug Sherwood, Steve Hicks, D.J. Macri Jr., Katie McCardle, Freddie Rahmer Jr., Mario Page.

Did Not Start: Brittany Wixon, Curt Weller.

Driver Alex Tagliani on the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama Practice:

"I'm very happy about the second session. This morning I was worried a little bit. I think in the first session our car was the worst it has felt since the beginning of the season actually even in testing so I was quite nervous going into the second session. But the crew did a fantastic job. The challenge was since we hadn't run here we were coming here a little bit blind but we recovered well and now we are in the window. I think we've gotten the car where it needed to be this morning and now we just need to try to make it happen for qualifying. The engineers and crew have done a great job and now we know where the issues of the car are and hopefully we can fix them tonight and be good in qualifying tomorrow."

General Manager Rob Edwards on the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama Practice:

"Obviously we had a lot to learn today with not having been here before either as a team or as a driver. I think Alex and the engineers did a very good job between the first session and the second session. We showed our teething problems in the first session and we made big gains for the second session and achieved somewhat of the goals we were trying to get to today. Of course we want to be quickest but there is an amount we thought we needed to improve and look at overnight and we achieved that in the second session. So hats off to Alex and the engineers and as always the FAZZT crew guys did a great job making sure we were error free and had a good afternoon."

Event Notes:

· The course is a 2.38 mile, 17-turn permanent road course

· This will be the first IZOD Indy Car Series event at Barber Motorsports Park although the series has tested at this facility.
