Top ACT drivers have had Airborne success

            South Plattsburgh, NY – The American Canadian Late Model Tour (ACT) moves to Airborne Speedway this Saturday, July 10 for the 36th Furniture World of VT Spring Green 100 and several of the tour’s top performers are licking their chops.

 

Defending ACT champion Brian Hoar of Williston, VT, Brent Dragon of Milton, VT and Mark Lamberton of Mooers Forks, NY - 1st, 2nd and 7th in the point standings – are former Airborne track champions. Hoar won the 1999 Spring Green, the same year he won the track title. When ACT last visited in September 2009, he finished second to Patrick Laperle in the Fall Foliage 300.

Dragon won the event in 2004 to join his father Harmon “Beaver” Dragon and his uncle Bobby Dragon on the Spring Green winner’s list. Lamberton was crowned Airborne champion in 2001.

Scott Payea of Milton, VT, the 2009 Spring Green winner and currently third in ACT points, began racing four-cylinder cars at Airborne. He was a top performer in the Sportsman division.

Two-time Spring Green winner and six-time ACT champion Jean-Paul Cyr, off to a slow start in 2010, will try to turn things around on the Plattsburgh half-mile.

Beaver Dragon won the inaugural event at Catamount Stadium in 1974. In 1990, Airborne hosted its first Spring Green. Canadian Claude Leclerc won the race.

Adirondack Hardware and Vermont Life Systems are also sponsoring this weekend’s race card, which includes the DIRTcar Modifieds, Sportsmen, Renegades, Bombers and a non-points race for the Mini-Modifieds.

Post time Saturday is 6 p.m. Grandstands open at 3 p.m. Admission is $18/adults – children 12 and under free. Advance sale tickets available – call 518-561-3208.

12TH ANNUAL MERCHANTS BANK 150 OPENS T-ROAD

        Waterbury, VT – Over fifty (50) American Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model teams are expected to battle the high banks of Thunder Road for thirty (30) qualifying spots in the $25,000 Merchants Bank 150 opening event on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at the “Nation’s Site of Excitement”, Barre, Vermont’s Thunder Road.

 

 

Thunder Road (TR) presents a unique challenge for teams of the ACT. There are a large number of regular veteran touring teams entered, including, multi-time champions Brian Hoar and Jean Paul Cyr (the defending Thunder Road Champion). Joining them with plenty of experience are Brent Dragon, Scott Payea and Hudson, New Hampshire’s Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. These teams are joined by the Thunder Road regular weekly competitors, including three time champions Cris Michaud and Phil Scott, and former Thunder Road champion David Pembroke. Regulars Nick Sweet, Rich Lowery, Joe Becker, Matt White, Brooks Clark and Trampas Demers only add to the depth that the weekly racers bring to the Merchants Bank 150.

 

Defending champion of the Merchants Bank 150, Eric Williams from Hyde Park, Vermont said “It’s really tough to get the handle on Thunder Road for Tour teams that did not grow up racing there. Once you figure the track out, it can be a lot of fun, and the competition is always fierce, but Thunder Road regulars really have an edge over most of the touring guys, especially in qualifying”. Williams was also the 2008 “King of the Road” at Thunder Road.

 

Some of the touring teams have found success at Thunder Road over the years. “I really didn’t like the place the first time I was there, but I took it as a team challenge and decided we were going to figure it out,” said veteran racer Glen Luce of Turner, ME. “I wish I could tell some of the other Tour teams from Maine how to get around those high banks, and especially turn 4, but it is really something you have to feel to get any success there. I love the atmosphere at TR and just need to find some consistency,” concluded Luce.

 

The Merchants Bank car show will open the weekend in downtown Barre from 9:00am until noon. Over 100 race cars will be on display during this traditional free family show. A pit stop contest will take place at 10:45, and the highlight of the day is when the Pipers and Drummers line up the 100 cars at high noon. The race cars will “fire them up” and drive through the city and up Quarry Hill to Thunder Road. There is no other parade as unique as the opening Merchants Bank weekend parade for Thunder Road fans and competitors. A full afternoon of practice follows the morning festivities.

 

Sunday is race day for the 12th annual Merchants Bank 150 and starts with a Class Day Extravaganza with the presentation of 130 cars to fans beginning at 1:00. Racing starts at 1:30. Gates open at 10:00. Admission is only $18 for both days with a family of four admitted for only $35.

Airborne plans big month of May

South Plattsburgh, NY – May is going to be an exciting month at Airborne Speedway. Airborne’s 57th season – likely its biggest and most unique – opens Saturday, May 2. One week later, Saturday May 9, the American Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Models will be in town for the 35th annual Spring Green 100.

 

 

          The Modified Racing Series, one of two open-wheel asphalt modified tours scheduled to make its first-ever appearance at Airborne in 2010, will compete on Saturday, May 29. The Modified Racing Series has steadily grown in popularity with fans and race teams alike. The Series has a 19-race schedule in 2010, which takes it to all six New England states and New York. Jon McKennedy of Chelmsford, Mass is the reigning champion.

          The International Super Modified Association (ISMA) series will make its first trip to Airborne Saturday, July 17.

          Scott Payea, the 2009 ACT runner-up won the 2009 Spring Green. Racers attempting to deny Payea a second-straight Spring Green victory include 2009 ACT champion Brian Hoar of Williston, VT, multi-time Airborne champion Brent Dragon of Milton, VT, Thunder Road Milk Bowl winner John Donahue of Graniteville, VT, Joey Polewarczyk of Hudson, NH and former Spring Green winner and NASCAR Busch North champion Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, NH. Canadian Junior Hanley and Plattsburgh’s Robin Wood (Sportsman) are the only drivers to win back-to-back Spring Greens.

          The season opener May 2 kicks off 2009 Ernie’s Tools Modified champion Martin Roy’s title defense. The J&S Steel Sportsman, Versatile Trailer Sales Renegades, Keeseville NAPA Auto Parts Mini-Modifieds and Monster Energy Bombers will also be in action.
