ACT CASTROL EDGE - STE-CROIX

2nd win in a row for St-Félicien driver Karl Allard.

Karl Allard won the fourth race of the ACT Castrol Edge Championship Saturday, june 19.  His second consecutive win in as many weekends.  Patrick Laperle and Donald Theetge completed the podium.

“I’m very excited about this win.  For a number of years I could not win at Ste-Croix.  I would always run good but something would happen and the win would slip through my fingers” said Allard.

Started the race in the 19th position, he visited the pits on the 27th circuit for minor repairs to the front of the car and to replace a flat right rear tire.  He passed the cars one by one until he took over  the lead, following a restart, from Patrick Laperle.

Because of difficult conditions due to a new asphalt and wet pavement conditions immediately off the preferred line because of a shower prior to the race; Indiscipline by the drivers who caused close to 20 cautions and re-starts (NOTE: ACT officials counted 15 official cautions.  More on this below); and absolute inefficiency by the towing crew; all of these reasons must of contributed to officials deciding to shorten the distance from the scheduled 100 laps when a brief and light rain fell on the track as the cars were already under caution on lap 96.  Close to two hours and a half since the drop of the green flag earlier in the evening.

Allard was « saved » by this brief rain and the ACT decision which followed as he ran out of gaz and came to a stop some 30 feet past the start-finish line.  Forced to go get the checkered-flag by foot, his crew even had to push the car back to victory lane for customary celebrations and pictures.

It was expected.  Already the cars of Junior Collard, Dany Trépanier and Daniel Decoste ran out of gaz just moments before.

If Patrick Laperle was hooted during post race interviews, for qualifying the ACT decision of shortening the race as premature, other competitors also felt it was.

Laperle who took the start in 17th position, immediately in front of Allard, claimed the top spot on the 20th circuit.  A position which he held until he lost it to Allard on the third restart.

“We setup the car to go the distance.  Who would it have been to try and get the remaining four laps in ?” asked Laperle.  He also commented on Allard’s move on the backstretch which sent him off the track and on the wet grass sliding the distance of the straight.  Race Director John Walker, immediately after the incident, made sure to warn the Allard crew that he was giving the benefit of the doubt this time, but any more moves of this sort was not going to be tolerated and be dealt with.

To restart the event to complete the distance, even for just four laps, may have been very dangerous.  As a number of cars would most likely have ran out of gaz.  Nevertheless, this would have benefited the cars and teams who had planned for the extra fuel and the posted distance.

Donald Theetge finished the race in third place after having scared his crew and fans as he ran slow on the track and it looked terminal.  Lucky him, the caution came out at the same time giving his crew time to fix the ignition issues.  Once corrected no one could expect him to run as good and move back to the front of the pack.

As a matter of fact, he participated in one of the best battles on the track of the evening, as he tried to make his way around the Decoste brothers for fourth place.  One lap Daniel is leading.  One lap Donald is leading.  Even Stéphane ran with them three wide.  If many expected this to be pay-back time between the Decoste and Theetge following the Montmagny incidents, it was nothing like it much to the benefits of the fans.

It wasn’t so for Jean-François Déry and Patrick Hamel.  As Hamel and Decoste were battelling for positions for several laps side by side Déry decided to dive low, making it three wide, as they entered turn 1.  Cars touched Decoste spun and Hamel was sent off course in the grass and trees outside turn 1.

When Hamel finally returned to the track, he had to wait over 30 minutes to get serviced by the wreckers, he joined the group and raced without visiting the pits.  After just a few laps, as he was behind Déry he gave him a push from behind sending him in a spin.  ACT officials black flagged him for his actions.  But Hamel did not listen to indications and continued to race with the group.  After a caution, he finally accepted to park his cars in the pits and was disqualified from the event.

At the same time of the Déry-Decoste-Hamel incident occurred on the front straight Gaétan Lauzier and Marco Savoir touched violently.  Claude Leclerc who tried to go around them also ended up in the wall.  Savoie was saying that the incident probably put an end to his racing season.

ACT Officials also used the black flag on one more occasion.  This time on Martin Lacombe.  Lacombe was running slow and stopped on the backstretch forcing a caution.  Immediately after the lights and the flag were drawn he started moving again.  He was indicated to load-her-up for doing so.  We don’t know why Lacombe stopped on the backstretch but we assume it was for a flat tire.

Despite running out of gaz Daniel Decoste was credited with 4th, Stéphane Decoste 5th and JF Déry 6th.

Another great performance by rookies Jimmy Cormier and Alex Labbé who finished 7th and 9th respectively.

How can we not mention Jonathan Desbiens’ 8th place finish considering he took the start in 27th starting position and took each one of the starts in the first half of the race from dead last due to engine power issues.

In order to understand ACT end of race procedures we contacted ACT President, Tom Curley, who informed us that as per race procedure in place at Ste-Croix the results were determined as per the last green flag ran since the race was shortened when it was already under caution for Yvon Bédard’s exploded engine.

He went on to add that it wouldn’t have been appropriate to change the scoring method, and count yellows, at that point as teams who had elected for one strategy or another would have been penalized for doing so and it would have benefited others.

He also spoke to us about the difference in counting the cautions as per ACT Procedures.  “For a caution to be counted it must be preceded by a green flag condition”.  At Ste-Croix since on many occasions the field stayed under caution (false restarts, cars stalled on the track as we were going green, etc) it explains the difference between the posted 15 cautions and the number of 19 or 20 many fans and track announcer were speaking of.

He went on to conclude that at Montmagny, he will have a driver only meeting informing them of new procedures, new disciplinary measures and other items that need to be addressed as a results of events that have happened to date.

Pro All Stars Series news: PASS Sportsman/Mod Race Report - Unity Raceway - 6/20/10

For Immediate Release: Media contact Norm Desjardins @ (603) 539-3368 Photos: Norm Marx

Landry wins PASS Sportsman Family Feud: Oliveira breaks through with PASS Mod win

NAPLES ME (6/21/10) Sunday’s racing card at Unity (ME) Raceway featured all three of the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North touring divisions and some great racing broke out in both the Sportsman and Mod features, punctuated by some serious bouts of yellow fever.

Mike Landry claimed his first feature win of the season, passing “Cousin Dan” McKeage on the 75 lap feature’s final restart for the race lead. Shane Tatro raced home in third; Scott Dorr and Craig Smith finish fourth and fifth.

Brad Bellows looked like he might go home with the winner’s trophy early on. He and Landry battled for the lead for the first forty laps until Bellow’s ride expired and retired on lap 41. Meanwhile Dan McKeage was working his way through the field, inheriting second when Bellows made his exit. For the final 35 laps it was a battle up front with Landry, McKeage and Shane Tatro on the charge.  Six cautions marred the final 18 laps as the top two waged a see-saw battle for the win. Landry’s win in the final restart battle sealed the victory for the newlywed racer from Oakland ME. Landry was two for two with a win in his heat race; Bellows was triumphant in his heat race.

Leo Oliveira decided to race with PASS on a regular basis for 2010 and the move paid off with his first touring series win in the PASS Mods. The Raynham Massachusetts racer dominated, taking the lead early on and staying there despite challenges Kevin Douglas early on and Scott McDaniel late.

Alan Wilson jumped out to an early lead in the 40 lap nightcap but Oliveira quickly put his ride on the point. There was plenty of action throughout the field as the Mod boys, like their Sportsman counterparts, had a tough time stringing together a long green flag run. Plenty of spins, a car or two in Unity Raceway’s fabled sand banks, and a wild checkered flag skirmish that jumbled the finishing order kept the action coming.

Bill Dixon came back from an early race spin to finish third behind Oliveira and McDaniel; Andy Shaw survived a trip off of turn one to finish fourth and Greg Ellis brought his ride home fifth.

Rich Ferreira and Kevin Douglas each won a qualifying heat.

The PASS Mods will be back on track Saturday July 3rd, part of a spectacular fourth of July celebration planned for Canaan (NH) Fair Speedway. The show will include Monster Trucks, 150 laps for the PASS Super Late Models, fireworks and much more. Canaan goes green   at 5:00 Saturday July 3rd.

The PASS Sportsman will make their first Lee (NH) USA Speedway appearance in a special Tuesday night  July 13 show that will include  the PASS Super Late Models and Mods.

You’ll find the tracks at www.canaanpeedways.com and www.leeusaspeedway.com .  All four PASS divisions are on line at www.proallstarsseries.com  .

Les Modifié : Soirée  a oublier pour Jean Boissonneault

Victoire pour Andrew Ranger

Pour publication immédiate

St-Eustache, 19 juin 2010.

STEVE BOOK DOMINATES FIRST ENDURO NIGHT RACE OF 2010!

June 19, 2010 (London, Ontario)

This season's first night Transmission Direct Enduro and Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos race was hot – in action and in temperature.  Plenty of drivers had their cars overheat – some made it back out to race and some didn't.  It was Steve Book's race despite his 64 having some mechanical issues earlier in the evening, too.

Pole sitter Terry Cole remained the race leader through some early trouble including a rollover at lap 3 that no one – not even that car's driver – seemed to be able to explain.  Matt Lassaline (24) rolled at least twice prompting the second time the night's sponsor, Whitworth Towing, had to haul a rollover off the track.  (The first was during a heat race) The 182 of Manny Demelo was also brought in by Whitworth and apologized that a steering problem caused him to clip Lassaline made him flip.

The second caution occurred at lap 6 when a rear tire flew off the 12 car of Mike Skinner and nearly landed in the truck bed of Dan Hundt (31).

At lap 17 Cole (129) surrendered the lead with a mechanical problem putting Steve Book (64) out front.  (Earlier in the night Book had left the second heat race to deal with some troubles under the hood although he did return and finished that heat five laps off the pace.)

The race stayed green at lap 35 when a handful of contenders connected on the back stretch.  Stan Cook and his crew took a baseball bat to the 74 to try to get it in shape to return to the race, which it did at lap 48. The "Lightning McQueen" car of Jacob Orr overheated although it was hard to tell because that vehicle's tongue is always hanging out.

Rough luck for Steve Arrand at lap 64. He lost his 4th place position with a spin.  At the same time, Steve Lovie (141) took advantage of the slowed traffic and got back on the lead lap but it didn't last long.  A similar situation cost Derek McCullough (38) his second place position a few laps later. He finished 4th.

The track was red-flagged at lap 84 as Josh Lusicer (99) spun on turn one and lost power.  Whitworth gave him a push off to the pits where the car was given a much needed drink and time to cool off. A couple of laps later lots of smoke from Carl Geiger whose 18 car smoked and spun on turn one.  The 18 sat facing traffic, out of harm's way, for the rest of the race.

Steve Arrand's night came to an end at lap 120 when Adam Deauvall (19) spun and Arrand had nowhere to go but into the 19.

With Book dominating and lapping the traffic on the track, the race was on for second spot.  #2 heat winner Ed Jeffrey maintained second until Norm Schneckenburger, driving Barry Watson's car, took it over with less than 10 laps to go before giving it back again.

The win was Steve Book's second feature victory of the season.  Jeffrey landed second, Schneckenburger third, Derek McCullough fourth and Piet Blaauboer II in fifth.

Some contenders were taken out before the feature race.

In the first heat, the 409 of Kevin Casson left at lap 5, spewing a bonfire's worth of smoke.  Jim Toffliemeyer's (125) left front flat took him out at lap 19.  In all, a dozen drivers didn't finish the first heat which was won by Richard Ainsworth.  It was Ainsworth's first trip to Victory Lane in 15 years of racing and announcer Jamie Maudsley said Ainsworth was "smiling like a mule with a mouthful of thistles!"

At lap 8 the second heat race had to be red-flagged when Scott Cottenden's car struck the back wall and flipped onto its lid.  Cottenden crawled out and waved to show he was okay. (That was Whitworth's first call to action of the night.)  Ed Jeffrey took the win.

Another entertaining round of Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars saw The Red Baron (Chris O'Neill) make his way to Victory Lane with a crumpled hood and spewing smoke!
