2010-02-06 - NSS ASA/Crate LM Feature



Il aura fallu attendre un journée de plus pour voir en piste les pilotes de la classe ASA / Crate Late Models. Dame nature en avait choisi ainsi, lorsque vendredi des averses importantes sont venues annuler la programmation.

Everyone had to wait an additional day to see the ASA / Crate Late Models. Mother nature decided so, when on Friday torrential rains fell on the speedway and forced the cancellation of the racing show.

Mais l'attente en a valu la peine. La grille de départ a été déterminée par des temps chronométrés et l'inversion des 9 premières voitures du peloton de 27 voitures.

Partant sur la première ligne l'Ontarien Brandon Watson et le champion défendant David Wagner. Le pilote de Saint-Denis-sur-richelieu, Patrick Laperle, le vice-champion de l'édition de 2009 a pris le départ au cinquième rang.

Une finale de vingt-cinq tours qui s'est déroulée à un rythme endiablé, sans aucune neutralisation.

Wagner s'est installé confortablement en tête tandis que Laperle (parti cinquième) et Stephan Nasse (parti sixième) se livrait toute une bataille en remontant une à une les positions. C'est aux suites d'un contact avec Nasse que Laperle avait percuté violement le mur l'an dernier.

Wagner en première place, suivi de Watson et Laperle. Nasse a fait toute une manœuvre passant de la quatrième place à la deuxième en passant d'un coup Laperle et Watson.

L'arrière de la voiture de Watson s'est dérobée permettant à Laperle de se glisser entre Nasse et Watson. Les trois side-by-side ont roulé sur un peu plus d'un tour dans le plus grand respect.

Une fois l'échange terminé, Laperle et Nasse avaient le dessus sur Watson, ils se lançaient donc à la poursuite de Wagner.

Laperle qui n'arrivait pas à doubler Wagner, puisqu'il avait une voiture très survireuse et en prenait très large, a vu Nasse passer devant Wagner. Il devait maintenant essuyer les attaques de Sean Bass. Un léger contact entre Laperle et Bass a relégué Laperle au quatrième rang.

Laperle toujours aux prises avec Wagner a vu Watson passé en troisième place avec seulement quelques tours à faire. Il prendra finalement la même ligne extérieur que les autres pour passer devant Wagner et se lancer à la poursuite des trois premiers.

Sean Bass a tenté, bien malgré lui, d'effectuer des attaques sur Nasse, mais ce dernier était trop fort.

Ils ont donc croisé le fil dans l'ordre suivant : Nasse, Bass, Watson, Laperle et Brandon Johnson.

Coup de théâtre : les inspections d'après course ont identifié que Watson roulait avec de l'essence non conforme et est donc disqualifié. Toutes les positions avancent donc d'une place. Au moment d'écrire ces lignes les résultats n'étaient toujours pas officiels puisque la voiture de Stephan Nasse subissaient toujours les vérifications très approfondies des inspecteurs techniques.

But the wait was worth it. The 27 car starting field was set using time trials and a 9 car inversion.

Starting on the front row Ontario's Brandon Watson and the defending champion David Wagner. The Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu driver, Patrick Laperle and vice-champion started fifth.

A 25 laps feature ran at a gruelling pace and without a single caution.

Wagner took the lead from the drop of the green flag, while Laperle (started fifth) and Stephan Nass (started sixth) were battleing each other as they moved up the field. It was after a contact with Nasse that Laperles hopes for a the 2009 title vanished as he hit violently the wall and destroyed his race car.

Wagner in first place, was followed by Watson and Laperle. Nasse made quite a move on the outside moving from fourth to second around Laperle and Watson.

Just a lap later, Watson's car slid up the car allowing Laperle to move in between him and Nasse. The trio ran side-by-side for just over a lap in the greatest respect possible.

Once the exchange finished, Laperle and Nasse won it over Watson, they immediately set their sights on Wagner.

Laperle who could not get around Wagner, because of a very loose and wide race car, saw Nasse make another up-high pass to go around him and Wagner in one shot. Meanwhile Laperle was now under attacks by Sean Bass. Slight contacts between the two relegated Laperle to fourth place.

Laperle still having to deal with Wagner saw Watson move around him and take third place away with just a few laps to go. He would eventually use the same outside lane to get around Wagner and get in hot pursuit of the top three cars.

Sean Bass attacked Nasse, but he was just too strong.

The eventually crossed the strip with Nasse, Bass, Watson, Laperle and Brandon Johnson rounding out the top five.

Following post race inspections, tech officials found Brandon Watson to have been using unapproved fuel and was disqualified and relegated to last place. All others therefore move up one position. At the time of writing these lines Stephan Nasse's car was still under the scrutiny of the tech officials.

Le peloton est stationnaire sur la piste en attendant que les officiels nettoient la piste.

La deuxième soirée de course débute un peu comme celle d’hier c’est terminée… avec tout le monde un peu déçu.

The second night of racing starts kinda like it ended yesterday... with everyone upset.


Les qualifications par temps chronométrés sont retardées puisque Brandon Johnson dans les Super Late a déversé de l’huile sur toute la piste. Les officiels travaillent depuis environs 40 minutes pour épendre de l’abrasif et rendre la piste prêt à la compétition.

En attendant, voici quelques photos des séances de pratiques de l’après-midi.

Qualifying via time trials have been on hold since Brandon Johnson spilled oil on the track as the cars were making their way around the track. Track officials have been working, for the last 40 minutes, at making the track clean so they can resume the racing.

GOODYEAR ACT LIMITED LATE MODEL TIRE TEST SUCCESSFUL

Waterbury, VT – Officials of the Goodyear Engineering and Racing Division and the American Canadian Tour (ACT) have announced that the final test of their new tire designed for a Limited Late Model was very successful.

Veteran racer Joey Laquerre from Barre, VT took his ACT Tiger Sportsman car to Hickory Speedway in North Carolina last week to assist with the test of the D2637 - 7.5” treaded tire designed for a Limited Late Model, or +/- 3000 lb ‘street stock’ division type race car. Laquerre originally tested the Goodyear D2635 tire for the ACT Sportsman division in 2008. He was instrumental in helping to get the modifications made resulting in a revolutionary tire for these kinds of race cars throughout the country. Laquerre also did extensive testing on the ACT Late Model tire in 2004, which led to present use by a dozen tracks, and both ACT Touring divisions in the US and Canada.

“The test went really well, and working with Joel (Reichert, a development engineer for Goodyear racing) is always interesting. He listens to what we as racers think might help the product. Goodyear really improved the tire with the added half inch, creating a better contact patch, and I was very pleased that after 150 laps of testing the tire was still performing within a tenth or two of where we had been 100 laps earlier,” said Laquerre.

The American Canadian Tour has been involved with development of short track tires in conjunction with Goodyear for over 20 years. “ It is great to have the world’s highest profile racing tire company work with us for the betterment of short track racing,” said Tom Curley, President of the American Canadian Tour. “We started out working on a treaded tire back around 1990. A few years ago we saw a need for an upgrade on the 8” Late Model slick, and Goodyear allowed us to work with them to produce the state of the art 8” slick which has become very popular nationwide and is used by our affiliate tracks and both our US ACT and Canadian Castrol tours. Now with the development of the 7.5” D2637 treaded tire, we have come full circle.”

The American Canadian Tour, which is a 25-year old sanctioning body for short track events throughout the Northeast is also working with Goodyear on a cost-effective four-cylinder tire. Additionally, Goodyear will be providing ACT competitors with a special tire for their second ACT INVITATIONAL to be held at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway on September 18, 2010.

Scott Junod, Goodyear Sales Manager, Short Track Racing, said, “Working with the competitors at ACT is always a very positive and rewarding experience for Goodyear. We have done a lot of testing with them over the past few years, and all of us in Engineering and Sales have really enjoyed the relationship. We are especially grateful to Joey (Laquerre) and appreciate all the help and input he has given us in development of this new tire for the Limited Late Model (ACT Tiger Sportsman) type car.”

The ACT Tiger division has been popular since 1966 at the flagship track, Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, VT. Annually, there are over forty (40) teams that compete weekly. Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY has seen continued success with the division for twenty years, and in 2010, White Mountain Motorsport Park in Lincoln, NH and the Devil’s Bowl Speedbowl in Fair Haven, Vermont will adopt the ACT rules for the ACT Tiger Sportsman division.

The Bond Auto/Wix “Tiger Sportsman Tour” will be expanding in 2010 to include events at both Thunder Road and White Mountain, as well as Riverside Speedway in Groveton, NH and Canaan Fair Speedway in Canaan, NH.

Tracks from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and Ontario have indicated they will run the new Goodyear tire in 2010 following the testing results from Hickory.

New Smyrna Speedway - World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing

Comme nous l’avons fait l’an dernier ma soeur Chantal et moi allons couvrir les courses qui se produisent à New Smyrna Speedway dans le cadre des World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.

Like we did last year, my sister Chantal and I will report on the racing held at New Smyrna Speedway during the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car racing.

FORD RACING ANNOUNCES $35,000 CONTINGENCY FOR 2010 ACT TEAMS

Waterbury, VT – Ford Racing announced an aggressive $35,000 contingency plan for the American Canadian Tour (ACT) for the 2010 campaign. The contingency program, tailored to support those teams that have chosen to compete in 2010 with the Ford powered S347JR engine in any ACT affiliate track weekly events, as well as the touring programs under the ACT sanction, is the largest contingency plan offered in the 25-year history of ACT.

“We want short track supporters across North America to know that we are very supportive of their efforts. Short tracks have been the backbone of stock car racing for over 50 years, and Ford recognizes their importance. We believe the contingency program that we have offered the ACT competitors and supporters reflects our support,” said Mike Delahanty, Program Manager-Sportsman Circle Track Racing for the Ford Racing Technology division of Ford Racing.

The Ford spec engine program was begun as a joint venture between Ford engineering and ACT in 2008. After months of research and development to make the Ford compatible with the existing motors that were exclusive in weekly and touring Late Model racing throughout the Northeast, the approved product was introduced at the beginning of the 2009 season. Long-time ACT competitor, and three-time King of the Road Champion at Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, VT, Cris Michaud, brought Ford Racing their first crate victory in mid-summer last season. 2009 Lee USA Track Champion Wayne Helliwell, and ACT regular young gun Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. from Hudson, NH, among others, have switched over to Ford for their 2010 campaigns.

The FORD Racing Blue Oval Challenge Program will offer several contingency programs to registered and approved competitors who compete in ACT Tour (US) events; ACT Castrol Série events, two ACT special events: the New Hampshire Motor Speedway Invitational II and the Vermont Milk Bowl at Thunder Road. The contingency program will award the following:

I ACT TOUR & ACT Castrol Série

II ACT Special Events, NHMS ACT Invitational II, VT Milk Bowl

III ACT Ford Racing Blue Oval Cup

(A season-long point program encompassing all Ford participants throughout the ACT Tour, ACT Castrol Canadian Series, and all ACT affiliate weekly tracks. An end-of-season point tally will reward Ford-powered competitors finishing in the top 10 as follows):

1st place- $3000 6th place- $ 600

2nd place- $1500 7th place- $ 500

3rd place- $1000 8th place- $ 400

4th place- $ 800 9th place- $ 300

5th place- $ 700 10th place- $ 200

A total of 43 ACT events will be eligible for contingency during the 2010 race season, and all ACT affiliate weekly programs will be eligible including: Thunder Road in Barre, VT; Lee USA in Lee, NH; White Mountain Motorsport Park in Lincoln, NH; Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, ME; Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, MA; Waterford Speedbowl, in Waterford, CT; Twin State Speedway in Claremont, NH; Kawartha Speedway in Peterborough, ON; and Capital City Speedway in Ottawa, ON. Other tracks may be added and eligible number of point-counting events and further details will be forthcoming from the ACT office to registered competitors.

“This program, designed by Ford, validates the vision we have been working on over the past decade at ACT,” said Tom Curley, President of ACT. “We have tried to bring one region of the country under a ‘universal’ set of rules that was cost efficient for race teams, promoters, and fans. The idea was to have a strong, cost effective race car for weekly racing that was still exciting to watch and also capable of running touring events in the region. Recent events like the TD Bank 250 at Oxford and the ACT Invitational at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway have certainly showcased how successful the format for these times has been. The Ford vs. Chevrolet rivalry is now officially re-established.”

The sensational young star of ACT racing, Joey Polewarczyk, Jr., said, “We made the switch to Ford for the 2010 season for a couple of reasons. We needed to try something different to compete with teams like Brian Hoar, Brent Dragon, and Brad Leighton in order to get an ACT Championship, which is our goal. If we are successful, we are hoping that Ford might also help us with some future goals we have in racing. This contingency incentive program is just great--not only the money involved, but racing against all the other potential Ford teams in a region gives our competitive juices just one more goal to go after.”

The ACT season opens on April 18, 2010 at the Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH with the annual running of the NH Governor’s Cup 150. This will also be the first opportunity to lock in an invitation to the ACT Invitational II at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 18, 2010.

Salute to Hall of Famer Homer Drew highlights Racin' Preview 2010 at Portland Expo February 19-20

Portland, ME – Legendary Maine racer Homer Drew will be the focus of an extensive Maine Vintage Race Car Association display at Northern New England’s biggest and best wintertime stock car racing showcase, Racin’ Preview 2010, set for Friday and Saturday, February 19-20 at the Portland Exposition Building on Park Street (U.S. Route 1).

 

Drew, a Raymond native who passed away shortly after his two Hall of Fame inductions, is considered to be Maine’s greatest stock car racer ever by most observers fortunate enough to witness his incredible talent behind the wheel of an oval track machine – no matter what kind of car, or what racing surface was under it. Drew was one of twelve inaugural inductees into the Maine Racing Hall of Fame. He had previously been inducted into the prestigious New England Auto Racers (NEAR) Hall of Fame.

 

At least four restored racecars instrumental in the long legacy left behind by Drew will be on display at the Portland oval track showcase. The legendary P-38 cutdown Drew campaigned for fellow Maine Racing Hall of Famer Bob Bushley of Windham – the car legend says he steered to victory lane on the dirt at Beech Ridge Speedway in Scarborough with vice grips guiding him after the steering wheel broke – will be among the cars displayed, as will one of the most revered cars in the history of Maine racing on asphalt tracks, the J-2 Camaro then-owned by another Maine Hall of Famer, Jerry Seavey of Windham, which Drew dominated the 1973 Getty Open series at Bob Bahre’s Oxford Plains Speedway against unmatched fields of talented racers in that era, or perhaps any since. Portland firefighter and Maine vintage race car guru Steve Pellerin of Gorham quarterbacked efforts to restore the Drew bookend racecars.

 

The salute to legendary Maine racing Hall of Famer Homer Drew joins displays from most of the premiere racetracks and touring series competing throughout New England at the region’s only off-season show dedicated to oval track racing. The vast majority of racetracks and touring series operating throughout Maine and New Hampshire will be represented at the annual celebration, with hundreds of door prizes including dozens of free race event tickets to be handed out to lucky show ticketholders.

 

The extensive historical display by the MVRCA will be joined by dozens of current racecars in competition throughout Northern New England, including NASCVAR Whelen All-American Series tracks like Scarborough’s Beech Ridge Motor Speedway and New Hampshire’s Lee USA Speedway along with many independent tracks from throughout the tri-state area.

 

Doors at the Portland Expo open at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19, with several autograph opportunities and other activities ongoing through 10:00 p.m. Saturday show hours are 9:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A limited amount of commercial display space remains available.

BOND AUTO ANNOUNCES ACT 2010 'TIGER' SPORTSMAN TOUR

Waterbury, VT – The American Canadian Tour (ACT) announced today that Bond Auto Parts, a family run business since 1956 with 37 locations throughout Vermont and New Hampshire, will become the title sponsor of the 2010 ACT 4 event series for the “Tiger Sportsman” division, known as the Bond Auto/WIX Tiger Sportsman Tour.

The Sportsman division is a Limited Late Model car, which has been a mainstay of Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, VT, the home of Bond Auto.

“We are really happy to be able to support this ACT division, which will appear in several markets that we service,” said Mark Mast, Vice President of Marketing for Bond. “Our employees have been great fans of ACT and Thunder Road over the years, as well as all the regional race tracks. This series of 100 lap events for the popular ACT Tiger Sportsmen seemed like a great fit for some of our marketing needs, and allows us to show support for the racers that have always supported our Bond Auto locations.”

Bond Auto has a long history with the ACT flagship track, Thunder Road. “When we were asked to take Thunder Road back from the bank in 1980, it was Bond Auto that jumped on board to help us. Thunder Road will host a holiday 100-lap event on Thursday, July 01, 2010. The BOND Auto/WIX Tiger Sportsman Tour will visit Canaan Fair Speedway on Saturday, August 21, 2010, and the Champion will be crowned on Saturday, October 09, 2010 at the new Riverside Speedway in Groveton, NH.

L’équipe de course FAZZT amorce son programme de développement

La Canadienne Maryève Dufault signe avec l’équipe

Indianapolis, Indiana (26 janvier 2010) – L’équipe de course FAZZT a amorcé son programme de développement des pilotes en annonçant la signature de la Canadienne Maryève Dufault.

Indianapolis (Jan. 26, 2010) –The FAZZT Race Team has taken the initial steps into creating a development program with the signing of Canadian Maryeve Dufault.

« Dans la poursuite de nos efforts de création des divers programmes pour l’équipe de course FAZZT, nous nous rendons compte du soutien incroyable des compagnies canadiennes à l’égard de l’équipe et de son pilote canadien, explique Jim Freudenberg, directeur des opérations pour FAZZT. Lorsque l’occasion s’est présentée de rencontrer Maryève et de discuter du soutien que nous pouvions apporter à sa carrière de pilote automobile, nous avons repéré une excellente opportunité pour l’équipe et nos partenaires de débuter notre implication dans le développement de jeunes pilotes canadiens de talent. Son aptitude en piste et sa facilité de reconnaître l’importance du côté commercial de la course automobile, ajoutés à sa forte personnalité font d’elle une excellente coéquipière pour Alex et FAZZT. »

Originaire de Sorel (QC), Maryève possède une excellente feuille de route dans les séries de promotion incluant le karting, les championnats Jim Russel et Skip Barber, la formule BMW, la série Star Mazda, et dernièrement, elle a impressionné lors d’essais dans le championnat britannique de formule 3.

« Je suis un pilote de course, et depuis mon tout jeune âge, j’adore la poussée d’adrénaline que me procure la vitesse en piste, déclare Maryève. Et ne laissez pas le fait que je sois une femme entrer en ligne de compte, car je suis très compétitive. Je suis en course automobile pour gagner. » Maryève participe actuellement au championnat de karting Rotax International où elle continue de s’améliorer.

Maryève a attiré l’attention du pilote de l’équipe de course FAZZT Alex Tagliani lorsqu’elle courrait en série Rotax International. « Maryève est une pilote très talentueuse, entièrement dédiée à son sport, mentionne Alex. Nous sommes heureux qu’elle soit devenue membre de l’équipe de course FAZZT, et nous espérons pouvoir jouer un rôle dans la poursuite de sa quête et dans le développement de son talent de pilote. »

L’équipe de course FAZZT va soutenir Maryève dans sa recherche de commandites afin qu’elle puisse participer aux courses de la série de promotion IndyCar, et à certaines épreuves de la série Canadian Tire de NASCAR avec l’équipe Tagliani inscrite dans ce championnat. À propos de l’équipe FAZZT : L’équipe de course FAZZT a été formée en juillet 2009 à la suite d’un partenariat entre André Azzi d’Azzi Race Division, ATG, et Jim Freudenberg et Jason Priestley de l’agence Rubicon Sports. L’équipe participe à la totalité du championnat de la série IndyCar 2010. FAZZT dispose de quatre châssis Dallara et a signé une entente avec le Québécois Alex Tagliani qui pilote la voiture No 77. André Azzi, un entrepreneur montréalais, agit à titre de président-directeur général, et Jim Freudenberg, un vétéran du sport automobile, occupe le titre de directeur aux opérations. Les bureaux et l’usine de l’équipe occupent une surface d’environ 25 000 pieds carrés au nord d’Indianapolis. La division recherche et design sera localisée à Montréal. Her racing skill and understanding of the commercial side of racing combined with her marketability make her a great teammate for Alex and FAZZT. ”

Maryeve, a native of Sorel, Quebec, has an extensive racing background in the ladder series including karting, Formula Jim Russell, Skip Barber, Formula BMW, Star Mazda and a stint testing for Formula 3 in England. “I am a racer and from a very young age I loved the rush of adrenaline I got from racing,” said Maryeve. “And don’t let the feminine side of me fool you, I am very competitive and I am in racing to win.” Maryeve is currently driving in the Rotax International Karting Series and continuing to develop her racing skills.

Maryeve came to the attention of FAZZT Race Team driver Alex Tagliani during her racing in the Rotax International Series. “Maryeve is a very talented driver who is driven by her commitment to the sport,” said Alex. “We are looking forward to having her as a part of the FAZZT Race Team and hope that we can play a part in continuing to develop her skills and talent as a driver.”

About FAZZT Race Team: The FAZZT Race Team was formed in July 2009 as a partnership between Andre Azzi of the Azzi Race Division, ATG, and Jim Freudenberg and Jason Priestley of the Rubicon Sports Agency. Airborne plans big month of May

South Plattsburgh, NY – May is going to be an exciting month at Airborne Speedway. Airborne’s 57th season – likely its biggest and most unique – opens Saturday, May 2. One week later, Saturday May 9, the American Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Models will be in town for the 35th annual Spring Green 100.

 

 

          The Modified Racing Series, one of two open-wheel asphalt modified tours scheduled to make its first-ever appearance at Airborne in 2010, will compete on Saturday, May 29. The Modified Racing Series has steadily grown in popularity with fans and race teams alike. The Series has a 19-race schedule in 2010, which takes it to all six New England states and New York. Jon McKennedy of Chelmsford, Mass is the reigning champion.

          The International Super Modified Association (ISMA) series will make its first trip to Airborne Saturday, July 17.

          Scott Payea, the 2009 ACT runner-up won the 2009 Spring Green. Racers attempting to deny Payea a second-straight Spring Green victory include 2009 ACT champion Brian Hoar of Williston, VT, multi-time Airborne champion Brent Dragon of Milton, VT, Thunder Road Milk Bowl winner John Donahue of Graniteville, VT, Joey Polewarczyk of Hudson, NH and former Spring Green winner and NASCAR Busch North champion Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, NH. Canadian Junior Hanley and Plattsburgh’s Robin Wood (Sportsman) are the only drivers to win back-to-back Spring Greens.

          The season opener May 2 kicks off 2009 Ernie’s Tools Modified champion Martin Roy’s title defense. The J&S Steel Sportsman, Versatile Trailer Sales Renegades, Keeseville NAPA Auto Parts Mini-Modifieds and Monster Energy Bombers will also be in action.

Canadian Motorsports Expo - Day 1







The first day at the Canadian Motorsports Expo is over. The CME is being held at the International Centre of Toronto.

Une première journée de terminée au salon Canadian Motorsports Expo tenu au International Centre de Toronto.

After a long ride from home to the show, many hours of work to put the kiosk together, the results are worth it and make us real proud.

We have an amazing location just next to the Hendrick Motorsports booth where you can see the cars of Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Below is a slideshow of day 1.

Longue route pour s’y rendre, beaucoup de travail pour monter le kiosque, mais très fier des résultats.

Nous avons un emplacement du tonnerre juste à côté du kiosque de Hendrick Motorsports où on peut y retrouver les voitures de Jeff Gordon et de Dale Earnhardt Jr.
