The Milk Bowl is unique not only because of its Monza style format, where the race is 3 x 50 laps dashes with an inversion of the finishing order in the first and second segments to line up the cars in the following segment. But more importantly because the winner gets to kiss one of Vermont’s finest Ayershire cows. And Donahue did just that with Larolupine!

Going into the last segment Donahue trailed Dragon by 1 point and in third place at the time was Scott Payea who was trailing Dragon by six points. Because of their finish in the second segment Dragon started 25th and Donahue 26th. The duo would run nose to tail and side to side even taking it three wide on a couple occasions. Donahue managed to stay in front for most of the exchange over Dragon who wasn’t letting more than a car length separate the two. Unfortunately for Dragon, following the restart, where he was on the outside he got hung out and conceded four to five car lengths to Donahue. He was never able to reel him back in. Donahue would finish 5 and Dragon 10 in the last segment.

The missing competitor: Patrick Laperle whos name is etched 3 times.

Donahue’s name will be etched in granite next to other great drivers having won the prestigious race before him. One notable driver missing from this year’s competition, whose name is etched three times on the granite monument, is Canadian driver Patrick Laperle of St-Denis-sur-richelieu, QC. Laperle, the 2007 ACT Castrol and 2008 ACT Tour Champion, opted not to race in this year’s event – after winning the last two editions of the Milk Bowl and another one in 2005, he is tied for second with the most wins in the coveted race – in protest for of how he feels ACT officiated and scored the ACT Castrol event ran at Autodrome St-Eustache on September 20th, the last race of the Canadian Championship. Donald Theetge of Boischatel was declared the champion after a 48 hour scoring recheck and adjustment.

“This is a great victory for team and our sponsors. Obviously this race needs to be raced differently than the other races, the Milk Bowl format means you need to drive all out all of the time” said Donahue as his car was undergoing tech. He added “When Brent [Dragon] made it three wide and rubbed me, I knew the gloves were off. So I took it three wide to reclaim what I felt was rightfully mine. And then I just drove hard and kept passing every car in trying to get as many cars between us. I don’t use the rear view mirror and my spotter kept telling me to pass more cars, so I worked hard to pass every car I came on, not knowing how far or how close Brent was.”

Second generation driver Brent Dragon and 2006 Milk Bowl winner ran strong all day. He was a favourite to win the race going in, after winning the first segment in a very dominating fashion and leading the cumulative score after two segments he seemed enroute to a second Milk Bowl victory. “All day my car was great. We even improved the handling after the first segment. In the third segment, my car was still very good until I got hit in the left rear. It moved the housing forward and from that point on the car was very loose and we didn’t have what it took to finish ahead of John” declared Dragon.

Hyde park, VT’s Eric Williams finished third in the cumulative scoring told us “in the first segment the car was junk. The crew made it better in the second segment, but we got boxed in and couldn’t go anywhere. When the third segment came around we went from 16th starting position to finish 4th.” He went on to add “We definitely had a good car to get up to 4th. We battled with Pembrooke a ton of laps, at the end the handling started to go away in large part because of that battle, we therefore could not challenge the top 3 at the end. All in all we are satisfied with what we got.”

Joey Polewarczyk salvaged a fourth place over all after finishing a disappointing 22nd in segment two. The young New Hampshire driver started outside of row one in segment 1 and scored a fourth place finish. He was in the race as they say... “We were running good, I saw a hole in front of Matt White. It wasn’t being occupied, so I went for it. Matt could have given me a break. He didn’t and we made contact sending me in a spin. After a quick check and fix in the pits I returned, but there was no time left in that one and I finished way back”. In the last segment, “Pole” started ninth in the field and finished right on Jean-Paul Cyr’s bumper and in second place and added “Considering how bad we should have scored with the second segment, I am very happy it ends well.”

Threatning rain was certainly the reason many did not attend.
