OMRS Returns to Peterborough Speedway for the Next Stop on This Year’s Tour

OMRS Returns to Peterborough Speedway for the Next Stop on This Year's Tour

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

With a pair of events run so far, the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – has seen 2 first-time main event winners find their way to victory lane. Fans of the popular open-wheeled tour will be looking to see if the trend continues when the 2017 schedule resumes – Saturday, June 10th – at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.

After a stretch of very impressive showings last season, Duane Cinnamon took the checkered flag Saturday, May 20th at Sunset Speedway, while it was Brad Stevenson's turn to step into the spotlight at this year's first Peterborough Speedway event Saturday, May 27th. With the young term's point standings incredibly close, Randy Hollingsworth – who along with Rick Warnes and Bill Pickford make-up the OMRS group of officials – says its anyone's race to win.

"We've had about a dozen teams take the green flag at each of our shows this year," Hollingsworth said. "The field is strong and we're still expecting some new runners to be part of the action in weeks to come. After missing the first 2 events on this year's tour following his trip to Bristol Motor Speedway, Stu Robinson Jr. is expected to be in the starting line-up at Peterborough."

Hollingsworth says that with just over 75 points separating the top runners in the standings and the on-track competition incredibly tough throughout the field, it isn't surprising that there have been first-time winners in season's opening events.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Notebook: As part of the driver development program with Peterborough Speedway, OMRS will host its annual 'Test-A-Mod' day prior to the Saturday, June 10th event. From 11:00 'til 2:00, drivers from other divisions will get the chance to take some laps in one of the popular open-wheeled machines.

Matt Haufe Continues His Domination of the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series

Matt Haufe Continues His Domination of the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

Throughout its inaugural season, the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series is making motorsports history. The popular tour is drawing solid car counts and building a high level of fan support at every stop on the schedule. Saturday, June 3rd the group made its second start of the year as part of the 50thAnniversary Season at Peterborough Speedway.

22 teams logged-in to do battle at the venue known as Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval, with Cole Ledson and Dave Riopelle leading the pack to the green flag for the 25-lap main event. Before the first lap was scored a yellow flag was displayed and necessitated a complete restart. As series and track officials compared notes for a replay of the initial start, Ledson headed pit-side and would return to track at the tail-end of the field.

Coming from outside of the 3rd row, Matt Haufe had moved into 2nd spot as the lap counter clicked-off 4 complete, but a series of yellow flags with 9, 11, 12 and 14 circuits on the scoreboard slowed his charge to the front. The #88 machine would follow an impressive run by Cole McFadden for about half a dozen laps, before he worked his way into the lead with 18 laps in the record books. From there, the leader worked his way around lapped traffic and held McFadden at bay to take the checkered flag. Ledson, Riopelle and Jamie Riberdy completed the top 5. Mark Griffin, Wes Cuthbertson, Terry McClelland, Bill Mason, Andrew McFadden, Shawn Murray, Brad Haufe, Paul Pierik, Jeff Drimmie, Joe Sherman, Robin Jongen, Dawson Drimmie, Cory Richardson, Rick Eades, Adam Cuthbertson, Don Arnott and Glenn Lloyd rounded-out the finishing order.

Dave Riopelle, Terry McClelland, Matt Haufe and Cole Ledson scored qualifying heat race wins earlier in the day.

Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series Notebook: The series started the weekend with a return to Kawartha Downs & Speedway Friday, June 2nd. Matt Haufe picked-up the main event win, with Cole Ledson, Kevin Foisy, Adam Cuthbertson and Wes Cuthbertson completing the top 5.

FAN-demonium Takes the Spotlight at Peterborough Speedway

FAN-demonium Takes the Spotlight at Peterborough Speedway

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

The 50th Anniversary celebration was all about the fans, as the 2017 season continued Saturday, June 3rd at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval. Home track divisions including the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Jiffy Lube Mini Stocks, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks and the Organics & Glass Late Models were joined by the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends as Pepsi presented the year's first Summer Toonie Night, with $2.00 Spectator Grandstand Admission and a Fan Appreciation autograph session.

Feature event action took the green flag with the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks, as Jordan Dallin and Jack Dallin brought the field to the green flag. From the moment he crossed the line, the former track champion's #07 ride was the class of the field, jumping out to a lead of almost a straightaway over his closest competition. Jack Dallin took the win, over his bother Jordan. Tim Burke, Stacy Switzer and Stephen Bierworth rounded-out the top 5.

Rob Crick and Tyler Begbie paced the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun pack to the stripe for their 20-lap main event. Former track champion and last week's feature winner Jeremy Kelly squeezed through the middle with a pass on the front stretch to move into 3rd place and that was a sign of things to come. A lap after a lap 11 caution, he'd wheel into the lead and survive a late race charge from Sean Kennedy for his second straight checkered flag. Keith Parkes, Baden Powell and 'Pops' MacDonald chased the lead duo across the stripe.

With Todd Delisle and Bryan Mercer showing the way, the Organics & Glass Late Model pack came to the Great Canadian RV green flag for a 50-lap feature tilt. Rebounding from a hard crash during the opening week of action, Dan McHattie took the lead with 8 laps on the board and began lapping cars just 3 circuits later. A string of yellow flags, including one with just a handful of laps remaining slowed the pace, but couldn't keep McHattie from his first win of the young season. Chris Mitchell, Mercer, James Horner and Amanda Balson completed the top 5.

With Kris Khan and Willow Barberstock bringing the pack from the staging area, the Jiffy Lube Mini Stocks hit Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval for their 20-lap feature. Khan – who took the win on opening night – grabbed an early lead and caught the rear of the field with only 3 laps down. A yellow flag for a front stretch incident brought everyone back together and gave Neil Hannah the opportunity to take the lead with just a couple of laps to go. After hitting the outside retaining wall in the first turn a week ago, Hannah's #23 would hit Dart Heating & Air Conditioning victory lane. Another strong run by Kent Missons resulted in a second-place finish, while Kevin Strutt, Khan and Donovan Price were next across the line.

Cole Ledson and Dave Riopelle brought the Trailers Plus.net Eastern Ontario Legends Series to the track for their 25-lap feature event. The yellow flag waved before the first lap could be scored, meaning there would be a complete restart. Riopelle and former Legends champion Adam Cuthbertson were strong early, but all eyes were on the #88 of Matt Haufe, who'd be chasing his 4th win in as many EOLS starts. After following Cole McFadden for about half a dozen laps, the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City proved no match for the most dominant driver on the Eastern Ontario Legends tour, as Haufe kept his win streak alive. McFadden, Ledson, Riopelle and Jamie Riberdy followed Haufe across the stripe.

Tim Burke and Jordan Dallin shared the qualifying in the Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Trucks. Sean Kennedy, Malcolm 'Pops' MacDonald, Jeremy Kelly, Baden Powell, Tyler Begbie and Griffin Powell claimed the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun heats. Preliminary rounds for the Organics & Glass Late Models went to Tyler Betts, Amanda Balson, Dan McHattie and Chris Mitchell. Donovan Price, Kent Missons, former 4Fun division track champion Willow Barberstock and Noel Snow each claimed a Jiffy Lube Mini Stock heat race. Trailers Plus.net Eastern Ontario Legends heats went to Dave Riopelle, Terry McClelland, Matt Haufe and Cole Ledson.

Bullring bullet points: Calvin Jessup Jr. of Oshawa, Ontario pocketed the night's 50/50 prize of $1181.00…Tyler Betts saw a strong finish come to an end in the closing stages of the Late Model feature, when his #86 ride blew a right front tire and bounced off the wall…Amanda Balson finished 5th in the Late Model 'A' main, but her race wasn't without its share of excitement, as the hood on her car flipped-up in front of the windshield while pack was running at speed…Willow Barberstock took advantage of a night off with the Ontario Modifieds schedule to return to familiar territory in a Mini Stock ride.

Peterborough Speedway's 50th Anniversary Season continues Saturday, June 10 with the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Thunder Car, Organics & Glass Late Model divisions, plus a 50-lap main event for the Jiffy Lube Mini Stock field. The Ontario Modifieds Racing Series will also make its second start of the year. Pit gates open at 3:00, with the general admission grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and the night's first green flag at 6:00.

Robert James Racing’s 2 Car Line-up Returns to Peterborough Speedway By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media The Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – brings a great night of action to each event, at every track. After claiming the overall championship in 2015 and the runner-up spot in 2016, Robert James Racing from Bradford, Ontario is one of the top teams on the tour. Although their #68 car missed the year’s first 2 events, Stu Robinson Jr. will be back in the fold when the popular open wheeled squad returns to Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, June 10th. Team principle Robert James says it’ll be great to have his ‘family’ back together at the track. “We had the chance for Stu to run the Short Track U.S. Nationals at Bristol Motor Speedway and we couldn’t pass it up,” Robert James said. “The weekend didn’t go exactly as we’d planned, but we made the main event through the last-chance qualifier. The Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – brings a great night of action to each event, at every track. After claiming the overall championship in 2015 and the runner-up spot in 2016, Robert James Racing from Bradford, Ontario is one of the top teams on the tour. Although their #68 car missed the year's first 2 events, Stu Robinson Jr. will be back in the fold when the popular open wheeled squad returns to Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, June 10th. Team principle Robert James says it'll be great to have his 'family' back together at the track.

"We had the chance for Stu to run the Short Track U.S. Nationals at Bristol Motor Speedway and we couldn't pass it up," Robert James said. "The weekend didn't go exactly as we'd planned, but we made the main event through the last-chance qualifier. Things have a tendency to happen pretty fast at that track and we were caught-up in an incident that hurt the car. Its taken some time and a lot of hard work by the crew, but we're ready and will have both cars at Peterborough."

In Robinson's absence, Connor James has been flying the team's colours and turned-in a solid top 5 effort at this year's opening date – Saturday, May 20th – at Sunset Speedway. The talented youngster – who celebrated his 20th birthday in March – was 7th when the series debut – Saturday, May 27th – at Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval. Robert James says Stu Robinson's experience is the perfect match for his son's youthful exuberance.

"Like any team owner, I'm looking for our best performance at every event, but consistency is the key. We've proven that you don't always need to win every race to clinch a championship," James explained. "Two years ago, Donny Beatty took the title in our car without winning a main event. Stu finished second last year by being near the front of the field every time the checkered flag waved, but he didn't win a race either. I'm like to celebrate with one of our drivers in victory lane, but we've enjoyed some great moments over the years."

James points to homework as one of the main reasons behind his team's success. The team logs some long hours behind the scenes and that effort continues once they get to the track, with changes being made during practice sessions before the initial green flag and as the night's race action rolls along. The car owner believes that being successful on the track means that you never stop working.

"Everyone associated with our teams – whether it be the 2 OMRS cars or the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series program – is committed to the same goal."

Robert James Racing is supported by Near North Construction and WIX Filters. Clarke Motorsports Communications is pleased to represent the #4 and #68 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series teams during the 2017 season.

After holding down the fort on his own in the first 2 events, Connor James (#4) will be joined by teammate Stu Robinson Jr. – Saturday, June 10th – when the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series returns to Peterborough Speedway.

Perrotte Scores at Airborne

Perrotte Scores at Airborne

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Mike Perrotte had nothing but bad luck to start out the 2017 racing season at Airborne Park Speedway. That changed Saturday night.

The racing veteran from Plattsburgh drove his Adirondack Auto No. 35 to victory lane as head led every lap of the Egglefield Ford 358-Modified 30 lap feature.

Perrotte ran up on heavy lap traffic on lap-26 but methodically executed his way through the slower cars. Gage Morin of Cornwall, ON pulled even in turns three and four on the final lap, but could not complete the slide job underneath. Morin would finish second. St. Hyacinth, PQ driver Steve Bernier finished in third. Chris Raabe and Patrick Dupree completed the top five.

"It's always good when you win," Perrotte said. "We have a lot of good drivers here, so its really something to finish ahead of them."

The Fidelis Care Sportsman 25 lap feature found a repeat winner. Moïse Pagé of St. Louis de Gonzague, PQ collected his second checkerd flag of the season.

Pagé took the lead from Mooers' Jamy Begor on lap-21.

Begor had the lead on a lap-14 restart and was able to vault off turn two to stay ahead. Pagé was patient and waited for Begor to slip up and he did on lap-21, allowing Pagé to drive through.

Begor hung on for second. Apparent third place finisher, Neal Provost II, failed post-race technical inspection for a weight issue. Danny Sullivan was placed third. John Scarborough and Lonnie Rivers completed the top five.

"I knew I had a good car and just waited for the 19 to make a mistake," Pagé said. "This track was smooth and the car would go wherever I put it."

Brent Jarvis scored a hat trick as he is now three for three in the Poirier's True Value Renegade division. Keith O'Neil and Jay LaGrave finished in second and third, respectively.

A third different winner emerged in the Busch Beer Mini-Mod division as Michael Whalen Jr. made his first trip to victory lane. Tyler Irwin and Ed Bresette completed the top three.

Nathan Smart won his first race in the Strictly Stock division. Shawn Walker and Rolland Guay finished the top three.

Racing action resumes next Saturday night when Northline Utilities presents the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints. Racing gets underway at 7 p.m. For more details and to stay up to date, visit airborneparkspeedway.com.
