The Family that Plays Together…at Peterborough Speedway

The Family that Plays Together…at Peterborough Speedway

In most sports, they say you can't tell the players without a program. Mention the name 'Junkin' during role call at a Peterborough Speedway driver's meeting and you'll immediately see 3 hands in the air.

Campaigning a 3 car team at a venue known as Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval would be considered by some to be an arduous task, but for Tyler Junkin, his family and friends doing just that has become a way of life. The 29 year old from Ennismore, Ontario not only looks after his own equipment – the #41 Mini Stock that finished 3rd in the 2014 point standings – he also takes care of the machines run by his sister Ember and his mother Marilyn in the Mini Stock and 4Fun divisions at Peterborough Speedway. Junkin says he enjoys the challenge that comes with building the cars and making them fast.

"Racing has always been a results driven sport," said Junkin. "Having any of our teams – whether my car, Mom's or Ember's – run well is very rewarding. It makes the effort we put into getting everything to the track everySaturday night very satisfying."

Based on his career statistics – including the 2010 Autumn Colours championship and second place finishes in 2011, 2013 and 2014 – Tyler Junkin's car is the lead piece in the TMC Motorsports stable, but that doesn't mean he gets preferential treatment leading into weekly action on the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City. Ember Junkin finished 14th in Mini Stock points while running a limited schedule and Marilyn Junkin – affectionately known as 'Mama' – was 4th in last year's 4Fun standings and 13th in the 2013 Mini Stock chase.

"If we race it, we've built it," said Tyler Junkin. "The 3 cars that we bring to the track every weekend were all built in our shop from the ground up. Chassis, engines and every other component. If it breaks, we fix it. Nothing can replace the value of hard work. Sometimes, a strong run is more satisfying than a main event win, because of the effort it took to get the car to the track. It's the same with my endurance car and with the Renegade Truck we ran a couple of years back."

Almost in unison, Tyler, Ember and Marilyn Junkin say that they look forward to their time at the racetrack and being around the friends they've made over the years; but the trio is also concerned that sometimes egos get in the way of what should be a fun time for everyone. Ember Junkin says it's unfortunate that when beating another becomes more important than enjoying yourself.

"When I raced 4Fun, we were like a big family," said the 24 year old who works as a residential painter. "We said 'sorry' when we hit someone on the track or helped them pull out a dent. A victory celebration was something that everyone shared and made us all happy. Now, it's almost like there's a million bucks on the line. That's not racing. It's being petty."

Champion to Rookie: Bresette Makes Big Jump at Airborne Park Speedway
Keeseville racer leaps from Mini-Mod title to run for NASCAR Modified rookie honors

For Immediate Release                                                                                                                                                                                APS-030615-1

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Steven Bresette had nothing left to prove in the Busch Beer Mini-Modified class at Airborne Park Speedway, but that won't be the case this year. Riding the momentum of winning his first track championship, the Keeseville, NY stock car driver is making a big transition from the entry-level cars into the J&S Steel Modifieds – the top division for the Plattsburgh oval.

The FedEx Ground 100 season opener will be Bresette's first test on Saturday, May 2. He is the latest addition to a talented freshman crop and is also eligible for state and national rookie honors in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, which sanctions racing at 60 tracks across North America including Airborne.

Moving up isn't necessarily uncharted ground – Bresette previously ran two seasons in the former Limited Late Model division – but making the leap to the open-wheel J&S Steel Modifieds will pit him against the toughest and most experienced racers at Airborne.

"It's all about learning and gaining some seat time this year. Hopefully my team and I will have some fun and have a good year," an optimistic Bresette said. "I've had this car for two years and I've been tinkering on it the whole time getting ready."

He has received advice – and some extra motivation – from reigning Modified champion Nick Heywood and multi-time race winner Jason Durgan. Each was honored for their 2014 accomplishments at the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series awards gala at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC in December.

"If I can finish in the top 10 in points and maybe get a podium finish in a race by the end of the year that would be awesome," Bresette said. "I'd like to be in the hunt for the rookie titles, too. Being invited to the NASCAR banquet in Charlotte would be incredible."

Bresette is sponsored by Delcon & Improvement, a home construction business that he co-owns in Keeseville, and he is hopeful to add more partners as the season approaches. He is part of a four-car family team at Airborne, joining Speedy Bresette in the Modified division and Mini-Modified racers Eddie Bresette and J.M. Bresette; Speedy and J.M. are also former Airborne champions. Friends Josh Nolan and Todd King are also part of the team, along with Steven's wife Talitha and their children, and his father Joey.

Airborne Park Speedway's 62nd season of stock car racing opens on Saturday, May 2. Airborne is located on Broderick Road in South Plattsburgh, NY, one mile from Exit 36 on the Interstate 87 Northway. For more information, call (518) 647-4444 or visit www.AirborneParkSpeedway.com. Airborne Park Speedway is on Facebook at Facebook.com/AirborneParkSpeedway and on Twitter at @AirborneSpeed.
