SPEEDWAY 51 ANNOUNCES MAJOR CHANGES
FOR THE SIGN DEPOT TIGER DIVISION
A significant change is coming to the Speedway 51; Sign Depot Tiger division on Saturday, September 3rd, a change that Track owner, Joey Laquerre feels will make this division much more appealing to drivers throughout the Northeast. It is no secret that the Tiger class has been struggling at Speedway 51, Thunder Road and WMMP. White Mountain made a bold change by combining the Tigers and the Strictly Stocks, and now have a solid twenty cars or more on a regular basis. The Speedway 51 mentor has come up with a plan to make his Tigers hopefully grow in numbers as well, and the idea seems to be well liked by all those whom have been informed about the big change.
"The cost of racing a Tiger has become extremely expensive in these last few years, stated Laquerre. This problem has sidelined so many teams. Our plan will cut the cost of racing one of these cars dramatically. Starting on Saturday, September 3rd, the Tigers will be racing on used American Racer Late Model tires. The best thing about this idea is that drivers will be able to get these used tires absolutely free! We will have used take-offs in stock, and teams can also get them from any source they want, including any ACT Tour, Thunder Road team, or from racers at other tracks that use the same brand and compounds. Several teams tested these tires last weekend and were ecstatic about the speed and stability of these tires. Several teams were running laps close to fourteen seconds, and with chassis adjustments, we are expecting times from the low 14's to mid to high 13's, and this is getting the drivers excited. More the speed and better the handling makes racing a lot more fun!"
Some of the other positives include the fact that teams can use the same rims that they now are using, and the division will be policed by other Tiger drivers, as each week, five drivers will be appointed Tiger tire inspectors. They will be checking for tread depth, and softness, and if there is any question on the tires, the whole group of five must make a unanimous decision. A maximum tread depth of 4.5 will be strictly enforced. A durometer reading allowance will be announced in the very near future. There will be a branding fee for each tire, and all monies from the branding will go directly to the Tiger point fund. There is no limit to the amount of tires you brand, and the tires will not be impounded weekly.
"We are committed to make this division stronger and hopefully this is a step in the right direction. I am really excited about this plan, and hopefully we can turn this division around. It is an extremely competitive class as it sits now, but I think we are headed into a new era for this type of car. It will be similar to a Late Model but much less expensive, but it also will be a new challenge for the drivers to be on racing slicks, stated Jeff Laquerre, and most drivers like to be challenged. I think this is really going to bring a ton of interest to the division."
Speedway 51 is closed this weekend due to the Oxford 250 and September 3rd is the date for the return of the North Country Ford Late Model division which had been idle for a couple of weeks. It will be Kids Night and will feature racecar rides for the youngsters. The Late Models will be joined by the all new Sign Depot Tigers, Schweppes Street Stocks, the AB Excavating Daredevils, and the White Mountain Community College Pure Stocks. Post time is 6:30pm.
