Airborne PR : Dupree going for 3rd Airborne title

For immediate release                                                  AS-041911-1

South Plattsburgh, NY – Until proven otherwise, defending Ernie’s Discount Tools DIRTcar Modified champion Patrick Dupree of Saranac Lake is the man to beat at Airborne Speedway. Airborne begins its 58th stock car racing season with the Della Auto Group Fast 50 Saturday, May 7.

Dupree won the 2010 season opener and was the point leader the rest of the way, winning five more races to claim his second Airborne track championship. His car of choice was the older of two machines prepared by his stepfather and car owner Wes Moody.

“The car’s been done over more than once, but it’s basically a six-year-old TEO chassis,” Dupree said. “I bent it pretty good at Syracuse when I hit a rut and then the car in front of me on a restart. That pinned the wheel and I went straight across into the wall, but I think it’s ready to go now.”

Airborne has mandated an MSD ignition box that will limit motors to 7600 rpm in 2011. It’s a rule welcomed by Dupree and Moody even as some observers thought their dominance brought the rule about.

“It will take some horsepower out, but it won’t slow the cars enough to notice,” Moody said. “Our motors are built by Andy Costello. They were never super-high revvers anyway. This will keep the motors alive and keep everybody racing. I think that’s the main idea. The faster cars are the ones that really handle and Patrick’s pretty smooth, so I don’t think we have to be concerned about the new rule. More teams are improving, the competition’s getting tougher, that’s the challenge of it.”

“The main goal is to get off to a good start like we did last year,” Dupree said. “I’ve said before that winning races is the goal, but I have to admit it’s pretty nice to come to track and see your name on top of the point standings. You kind of want it all, but being consistent is what gets you championships.”

Even as the Saranac Country Store/Fournier’s Farm Equipment No. 24 gets prepped for another title run, Moody’s at work on a new car. “It’s going to be built with Syracuse and possibly some racing at Oswego and Loudon in mind,” he said.

All five weekly divisions will be in action Saturday, May 7 at the Della Auto Group season opener. Post time is 5 p.m. For further information, visit airborneparkspeedway.com.
